This was one of the worst experiences trying to get a quote (which I had to pay for). I made an appointment weeks out only to get a call back that the provider was now going on vacation and now I had to schedule another month out. After completing the appointment, it took them almost a month to get the estimate. I had to follow up several times and they said my insurance was the hold up, but when I called my insurance, they said they sent their estimate to Seattle Special Care Dentistry weeks before (just a few days after the appt). It wasn't until I called my referring dentist to complain about the lack of customer service that I finally got a quote the next day. I'm 65, disabled, with a low income. They gave me 2 weeks to come up with $8k in advance (after insurance) for my work. I know it is complex. Inwas turned down for a loan as I have lived without credit cards. I've had teeth problems my whole life and spent thousands. At wits end begging others for help. This company won't budge an inch or even connect me with any sources to help. i can't eat. I don't know what to do. read more

With respect to their Billing, Insurance & Financial Policies, their website provides this: "Our goal is to provide high-quality dental care that fits your financial abilities. Your doctor will give you options in terms of the type of treatment selected, provide a detailed estimate of fees, timing, and payment possibilities so that you are able to make an informed decision on the treatment plan that best meets your needs." The dentist failed to do this other than giving me options, because there was only one thing they could do: no detailed estimate of fees, timing, or possibilities. That section of the website also provides this at the end of the section: "Link to financial policies". The link is broken and does not work. I paid what was owed, although it took me awhile, about 150 days to do so but they received every cent they billed. Because I had not paid in full within 120 days, I could not get an appointment for a tooth cleaning and the one I had previously booked was canceled by them. I was told that they would not schedule a tooth cleaning or dental appointment until I paid in full. I told them that I would go to their website that day and pay in full, which I did. Shortly thereafter, I tried to schedule another cleaning and dentist appointment, but was told my account had "gone to collection", something new that had not been told to me when I first could not schedule an appointment. I was completely unaware of this claim because I had not received any collection notice, and told them so. When I said I'd paid in full. I do take responsibility for my own actions. My review is intended to help their patients understand that because they do not following their own billing, insurance, and financial policies, it will be incumbent upon patients to make sure that SSCD does follow them. read more

At time of first call I was informed of availability before the end of the year, when they would be out of network with Delta Dental. I was rushed in for an emergent appointment to get onto the schedule. The Doctor and Assistant were wonderful. I was told it would be another week before they would know what I needed done because they have group meetings every Tuesday. They set up a phone call appt to follow up with me. I stated I would need an estimate before I could proceed. The other dentist office was able to give me an estimate at time of the evaluation visit (15min). The Doctor expressed understanding. As promised the Doctor called and confirmed a crown was needed, and she would transfer me to the front desk for the scheduling and billing. Once transferred I was informed the billing would have to get back to me, so we held off on scheduling. About a week later I received a message to call and schedule. I called asking about the billing before scheduling again. The front said they didn't know when the billing would get back to me. I asked if they could please check with the billing while I was on the phone so I would know, since it had been a week and they would be out of network. I was told there were openings available before Dec 31. The girl informed me they were all booked up now, and explained out of network to me, as they are still accepting my insurance. ( I already knew out of network means I pay more out of my pocket.) Anyways, she came back and said they will let me know within the next two weeks, and if I don't hear from them, call them back. Towards the end of November I received a mailed estimate. It took almost a whole month for the billing to get this estimate to me. The estimate was only valid till 12/31/24 and was for 2897.50 due at the time of service. I am sure the providers are great here, as I gave 3 stars for them and the assistants, but the front desk giving dead end answers with me having to ask them to please do their job and find the answer for me, and the billing department taking a month to get back to me was the worst service I had seen in a long time. Working in a medical field you are supposed to say - I am not sure. Let me find this out for you. And Billing is supposed to have a more considerate response. read more

I have extreme dental phobia. Just thinking about a dentist appointment sets my anxiety off. I've tried dental offices that offer oral sedation, in the past, and the appointment was still nerve wracking for me. So I decided to look for a dentist that offered IV sedation. I am so glad I gave SSCD a try! Both Dr's I saw, Dr Vainio & Dr Vetter, were extremely patient and gentle. I had a root canal and several crowns done. Instead of gripping the arm rests, filled with anxiety, I actually slept through most of the procedures. It was definitely a welcomed change. Seattle Special Care Dentistry is amazing. I'm a stage IV cancer patient undergoing treatment, and with that comes a lot of weird medical side effects. Dr. Winston was the only dentist who didn't run when it came to dealing with my medical issues. (Seriously I saw TWELVE other doctors before getting a referral here). Dr Vetter is amazing. Wow they do such a good job here. If you have someone with special needs. An elderly patient or someone who has issues that make it hard to go to a regular dentist than this is the place. It's conveniently located across from UVillage and while the parking lot does require payment, at least it is easy to find a space. The staff here is just amazing, they are really attentive and person. We loved the way that understood disabilities and worked to accommodate them. Also, they do an excellent job with after hours care and have residents who are in training. When we had a problem we spoke to the dentist on call and eventually went to the ER for a tooth infection and she came into see us. Now that is amazing! read more

I recently moved to Seattle and had my first appointment with Dr. Winston at Seattle Special Care Dentistry. I am very happy with the entire office staff with how friendly and professional and efficient they are. Checking in for the first time was a breeze. Dr. Winston's dental assistant Ernesto did a great job taking my blood pressure and x-rays. Dr. Winston reviewed my info from my previous dentist, performed a quick initial exam, and filled a small cavity that I knew about since last October at my previous dentist. She was really friendly, efficient, professional, and showed a real concern for my oral health and my experience at her practice. I'm sure she is super busy but she gave me 100% of her attention and focus while I was there. I'm very happy I found a great dentist office here in Seattle. read more

I need some emergency dental work and my doctors sent me here - the dentist himself was great - but there was something fishy about the billing - I'm still not sure what happened but - they ended up trying to double bill me- their billing person told me the insurance didn't pay and began aggressively trying to collect - I was in the middle of cancer treatment - when I found out that my insurance had paid- they told me the insurance company told them they sent me the money and promptly accused me of insurance fraud in an email - I was having this argument during chemo and radiation treatments - they were merciless until I challenged them to prove the accusations - I got no money from my insurance Suddenly they decided to "write it off " In all fairness, this was a couple of years ago - but my Dr referred me there again (radiation damage) and it all came back - I had a lot going on then When I told them I wasn't going forward because I'd had a bad experience there, the response I got was a cheery "ok- we'll tell Dr So and so that you prefer going elsewhere " which isn't exactly true - I just don't have the strength for another battle with their billing people read more

Referred here for pre & post cancer treatments. Stayed here about 6-7 years now. Never had a problem with booking or billing. Luckily, I have a good dental plan from work. But--Even if not, would have stayed due to their expertise with cancer, special case and difficult patients. Dr. Letwin is tops. Sensible, friendly and straight talking. Not condescending either. He's very attentive and checks out anything looking unusual and follows up. The techs are nice too and very skilled. Called back to make an appointment with Dr. Joe anyway and this time was told he is busy so I should proceed with another prosthodontist instead. Is it weird to say that I like going to the dentist? I started going to SSCD about two years ago when I decided it was time to remove three really wise teeth from my mouth. This place came up during my insurance-compatibility search and I just went with it-- best decision ever! In case you're wondering why I only had three wisdom teeth to remove, it's because the first one was taken out about a year earlier in Beijing. It started poking out much sooner than the others and the experience was one of the most traumatic I had ever been through. SSCD was the complete opposite. Dr. Letwin walked me through every step of the way, from the pre-removal check-in to the actual surgery, and I felt super safe and comfortable the entire time. Yes, the drugs definitely helped. I couldn't remember a thing between getting the IV and getting wheelchaired around in the parking lot omw home. The admin team was also fabulous in answering all my billing questions and I was so pleased when I found out that my final payment was just a fraction of what had been estimated! Since my surgery, I've been seeing Seng at SSCD for my biannual teeth cleaning and examination. This guy is the best. Profesh, thorough, and personable. I've never been one to hold conversations at the dentist, the salon, etc. and Seng has totally cracked my icy customer persona. We all know how uncomfortable it is to have someone peer at your gaping mouth, but Seng is so genuine and friendly it just feels like I'm just hanging out with a friend and getting my teeth cleaned. And clean it really is-- I love how squeaky shiny polished every corner of my mouth feels afterwards! 5 stars all the way! read more

I recently switched dentists and had my first appoint at SSCD in January this year. I must say this was definitely my best experience at any dental office. The entire staff was professional and friendly. Deborah, the hygienist, did an amazing job cleaning my teeth. I don't think my teeth have ever been so clean. The dentist, Dr. Winston, was so smart and friendly! She answered all my questions without making me feel dumb. She was an absolute delight! I was nervous about getting impressions of my teeth from a bad experience I had from a previous dentist. Such a wonderful experience! I am absolutely terrified of the dentist. I've been having wisdom teeth pain for a year and a half and because of how anxious I am, I kept putting it off. But I made the appointment and told myself not to cancel it. I was freaking out the morning of but the entire staff was so, so helpful and friendly and I felt completely safe. They made sure they told me everything they were doing before the procedure and really calmed down my anxiety. I was on IV sedation and laughing gas but barely remember the procedure and it was SUPER quick! They made sure I got out of it safe, prescribed all my medicine and gave my partner all the instructions. I highly recommend this place. I will trust them with anything. Um wow!! If you have a loved one with special needs this is the dentist for them!!!! My son has severe autism and for 8 years we saw someone else who gave him tranquilizers just to do cleanings. When I brought my son here they didn't need to use tranquilizers they just cleaned his teeth like it was their JOB. We also needed to have two teeth pulled, at the other Dds they wanted us to go to an oral surgeon and have my son put under General Anesthesia for it. But Special Care did it with just local Anesthesia , and they did a great job! My son will probably never enjoy dentist appts, but it's so much less stress knowing I'm taking him to a place where they are familiar with extreme cases. read more

Alright, as always, I was planning my Yelp review from the dentist's chair. I'll begin with my dentist-locating saga: after moving from Cincinnati, I was terrified to have to find a new dentist. I originally went to one in Eastlake, Aesthetica, which was SO HORRIBLE (NEVER GO THERE). I was really traumatized from that experience, so I gave up on my search and only went to the dentist on my yearly pilgrimages back to the midwest. As my visits back home became less frequent, I decided that I needed to begin the toilsome search for a Seattle dentist once more. After discovering that SSCD is affiliated with Swedish hospital (they host dental residents in their clinic), I got super excited. Swedish is awesome. The glowing Yelp reviews made me even more inclined to try them out. These guys are THE BEST! Not only did my hygienist have me cracking up the whole time (which, admittedly, is kind of difficult when there are dental tools in your mouth), but he was also super focused on making sure that I was comfortable and not in pain. My hour-long teeth cleaning went by crazy fast. Then, during my new patient exam, I realized that everyone else in the office is just as friendly. I swapped jokes with both the dentist (Dr. Letwin) and his assistant, and I was in such a good mood that I didn't even mind the painful gum-recession-measuring process. Seriously. They are some of the most delightful people I have ever met. If you're looking for a dentist, go here. Just do it. You'll be so happy that you did! I love my new dentist! read more

I would be doing Seattle a disservice my not writing an extremely glowing and positive review about this place. I stumbled upon them by accident.. literally. I got hit in the mouth with a softball and had 2 of my teeth knocked loose. I was rushed to the ER at Swedish Hospital on Cap Hill which coincidentally happened to be one of the only facilities with Emergency Dental care. I ended up with Dr. Letwin who was FABULOUS and extremely calming even when I was crying and hyperventillating since I hate hate hate the dentist and anything to do with teeth. After getting my teeth splinted and put back into place, I was told to follow up with Dr. Letwin at Special Care Dentistry the next morning. I guess the office does has a residency program at Swedish or vice versa ( I don't really get it) but he said he would be able to get a better look tomorrow after some swelling went down and where the equipment was more available. Almost a month a half later, I almost fully healed and continue to see the staff on a weekly basis. I want to reiterate that I HATE the dentist. I had traumatic experiences as a kid and it gives me anxiety to even think of scheduling an appointment. With SCD, I have had 2 root canals, a deep cleaning and scaling, and internal bleaching weekly for my greying tooth. This office is especially well versed on treating patients with special needs and who deal with dental anxiety. They never make you feel stupid about being scared and they have all sorts of techniques to help calm you down. For my root canal, I was provided nitrous, IV sedation, a warm blanket, and the Glee Pandora radio station. I mean, as far as root canals go, i couldn't ask for more. My hygenist is also AWESOME, hilarious, and was sensitive to my teeth that got knocked around and didn't clean them since he knew they were hurting me still. He made the hour + cleaning go by relatively quickly and offered me nitrous to make the experience more pleasant. The entire office staff is great as well - the woman who handles billing and insurance claims went out of her way to file my claim as a medical accident so I could get better coverage and the dental assistants are so nice and welcoming. If you don't have a dentist or if you are unhappy with the service you are receiving you should come here! You will not regret it! They are a great team and very professional. Love them! read more

So far it's been excellent. Nice comfy waiting area, with plenty of magazines. And for my kids cute wooden puzzles. Parking and finding the right building can be an adventure, it's right next door to a sperm bank though ( Kind of funny seeing this guy walking around trying to relax I guess lol ) So far, so good. My 4 year old daughter came out very content and felt she was respected as a person, and her opinion was very important. She is looking forward to coming back for her procedure. And will update post at that time. But for now.. Overall a beautiful office, with caring and attentive doctors and assistants. The reason for not a full five star is of course that finding the right building, and actually accessing the buildings from the street is a bit of a hassle with it being such a busy traffic packed road. read more

I have seen several different Dentists, Hygienists, and Residents and am impressed with the quality of treatment, skilled training, and their overall high tech equipment investments. This practice is seriously the best ever, especially if you have prior trauma or anxiety related to dental work. I cannot say enough good things about them! I am a wimp when it comes to dental work - I've had to have a LOT done, and I've had some really bad experiences over the years that have ratcheted up my anxiety. I found this practice a few years ago and decided to take the leap and go based on yelp reviews. I am SO GLAD I did. A few of the reasons why I choose to travel from South Tacoma to see a dentist in the U-District, despite our regional traffic nightmare: 1. This office is totally judgement free. The front desk staff, finance folks, dental techs, and dentists are welcoming and kind. They will not shame or guilt you for the condition of your teeth. They will help you figure out solutions in the timeframe and cost boundaries that you have. 2. Their exploration of issues when you come in experiencing pain is VERY gentle. The least painful I've ever experienced. 3. They see incredibly complex cases and therefore are STELLAR at their jobs. When I need an IV, I want an ER nurse to start it. For dental work, I want these guys. I had a broken tooth a few years ago and had two other dentists tell me it wasn't salvageable. I went here and they fixed it without a problem. 4. They really cater to anxious patients. They have multiple options for sedation, they give you warm blankets, dark glasses, let you listen to music on your headphones to drown out the noise and, again, they are super sweet about it and not judgy at all, even if you are in there literally crying at the prospect of dental work. This dental clinic is hands down the best for anyone with dental anxiety. Beyond the skill, I think what I am most impressed with is the level of patience that everyone here has. I somewhat of a neurotic patient, and I imagine I can be hard to work on. Dr. Letwin is gentle and explains everything thoroughly. He also did not make me feel pressured to get extra work done and was beyond understanding each time I've thrown the towel in during a session. Rewind 4 years ago I had just come out of a somewhat scary experience with a previous dentist so I was weary but hopeful that Amy Winston would be able to fix all the years ravage in my dental regions. Dr. Amy is extremely knowledgeable, patient, kind, and genuinely interested in what she does. She helped get me through my initial frights and we moved on to installing a new beautiful front crown and a much needed lower gum graft procedure. The specialists she brought in for both procedures were amazing and did perfect work. I have never had such a beautiful set of teeth, if only I had come here years ago! My hygienist Stephanie is thorough and so easy to get along with, as is everyone else in this office, even the front desk. Dr. Amy has the golden touch! When I arrived in Seattle, it had been a while since I'd been to the dentist. I have an outrageous fear of the dentist that goes back a generation to the awful stories my told about military dental adventures in the 60s. SHUDDER!! Rather than go to the dentist, I would rather suffer in pain for weeks and tell myself that it is mind over matter. That worked for a while, but once the tears are involuntarily falling down your cheeks for days, its time to bite the bullet. After an exhaustive online search and many phone calls to find a caring dental practice that had space to see me, I found SSCD. I came in for a consultation and the dental team made me feel at ease. They walked me through each step of what they wanted to do, and made sure I felt comfortable before they acted. Now I'm not talking about anything major, I mean they asked if it would be okay if opened my mouth and they could just look at it without tools. And then could they use the mirror. And then could they touch the tooth. And then....you get the point. By the end, it was clear I needed to come in for surgery the next day. They provided me with a magic prescription to put into "twilight" in addition to nitrous. They gave me careful instructions and made sure I had a loved one with me to take care of driving, etc. All went smoothly. The next day, the dentist called me personally to find out how I was doing and if their painless, memory-less dentistry had worked. Like a charm! Since that first visit to SSCD, I have exclusively seen them for all of my dental needs, and they have worked with me to get my dental fears under control. Even when I had a setback, they literally held me hand to calm me and make sure I was doing okay. I've had two crowns, several fillings and a multitude of cleanings and xrays, and through every single visit, they have taken great care of me. Additionally, I have not had a single problem with their acceptance of my insurance, even after I changed employers and had a carrier that didn't seem to be covered. Apparently, they have applied to that carrier so that my excellent care could continue with them. I'd also mention that if you have a loved with an intellectual or developmental disability, this is a great place to bring them. They are especially set up to understand the challenges that may come with these dental patients. They have multiple options for sedation to make the person feel comfortable, and they really work with the individual and their care providers to make sure that things go well and that the fear factore is minimal. The lead dentists in this practice have all spent their careers working with special needs patients, and that includes use of ASL for patients who are deaf. I go here for routine teeth cleaning and they do an amazing job. Having lived in a lot of places, I have been to many different dentists. Seng is the best hygienist I've ever encountered. He takes his time, makes sure that any sensitive teeth are not hurting too much, and produces an excellent cosmetic result. Their front desk staff are efficient and professional as well. I know they bill themselves as the office that can take care of complex medical cases and such, but they do a great job with run of the mill general dentistry too. read more

My daughter have special needs, she is severely autistic.We need a dental clinic that caters to people like hers so when her pediatrician recommend this clinic we scheduled an appointment right away. On the night of her dental surgery her whole face looks swollen. The next day it got worst.It looks excessively swollen.I tried to call the after hour on call but they never call back.We paid a lot of money for her surgery so we expect that they will give good service.The side of my daughters lips have some tearing also, I think they opened her mouth to much that that there are some tearings.I think they did not take care of her gently during her surgery. read more

You will not find a better dentist than Amy Winston. She is kind, understanding and a perfectionist. I was a dental hygienist at one time and there are dentist who cut corners but Dr. Winston does not fall into that category. It is one of only a few practices that offers all levels of sedation in the office, from nitrous oxide to IV sedation to general anesthesia. Unfortunately, after seeing Dr. Minnoch in Bellevue my daughter was so traumatized and in pain for so long that she had to have some dental work done under general anesthetic. Dr. Winston has successfully worked to help restore my daughter's trust plus, she has removed the fillings Dr. Minnoch placed. Two of the teeth needed root canals done by Dr. Vetter in the same office as Dr. Winston. He was also very patient and worked tirelessly to ensure a positive treatment. No one wanted a teenager to have root canals but there was no other choice.
