I was in town for the UFC. Needed to find a good place to get a workout in. Looked up quite a few boxing gyms but settled on this one. Glad I did, staff is cool, laid back environment. A great assortment of heavy bags, double end bags and speed bags. That was nice. Gym had an old school feel to it which is what I like and I am used to so that was a plus. Not sure when I'll be back this way again, but should we be fighting in Seattle in the future I'll definitely be back! read more

Great place to get a workout and actually learn boxing. The facility is new, clean, and well equip. They have an assortment of boxing bags that look new. They also have decent assortment of weights. They have a small locker room and lockers. The instructors are mostly amateur boxers(very skilled, just haven't gone professional) and some pro fighters. They actually teach technique here which is a huge improvement over other gyms that just have you punch the bag. Everyone is fairly nice. read more

I loved this place and want to keep supporting it, until this evening at my beginner boxing class that was instructed by Joey, who needs to get his attitude checked. He was condescending, unwelcoming and unnecessarily rude. If you can put up with someone who possesses toxic masculinity, then maybe this is the place for you. (Mind you, I tried a complimentary class with another awesome instructor (he was of Asian descent and shorter; unfortunately, I don't remember his name and couldn't find him on the website.) I've tried other boxing gyms in Seattle and I still preferred the Seattle Boxing Gym (SBG) given its authenticity and no-frills vibe, until today, December 12, 2023.)) I arrived early for the class, so I proceeded to warm up doing cycling (since I have been recovering from my ACL surgery and can't do jump ropes yet). The bicycles were hidden in the corner, so I had to keep leaning over and checking to see if they were starting the class soon, since I don't have my phone handy. I saw some people gathering in the middle of the gym but I wasn't sure if that was the class (since there were a few people exercising already at the gym), so I hopped off the bike and approached the instructor, Joey, and asked if this was the beginner class. He looked at me annoyed and said "Yeah, what about it?" I mean, jeeze, very welcoming to a simple question from someone who's obviously going to join the class. I proceeded to clarify nicely with a question, asking if it was starting soon. Throughout the lesson, the music was blaring loud and I could barely hear him. He also spoke fast and in jumbled words. So I did some of the moves wrong, which he corrected, which was fine. The exercises and drills were tough and effective, which I liked. Then, toward the end of the class, I thought we were going to do some cool-down exercises, which I did before with another instructor at SBG. When he said let's do some burnout, I thought the cool-down exercises were what he meant (mind you, this was my second class over the span of a few months.) He asked the class a question which option of burnout we wanted. I thought we get to choose our own version of cool-down. I spoke up and said I prefer to do ab exercises, to which he looked at me stone cold in the face again like I was about to punch him or something, "I am the instructor." Ok... It's like, I am not trying to challenge you dude, chill out, ffs. There were plenty of other ways to respond to what I said. There was unnecessary hostility created, which I did not appreciate. With my first complimentary class with the other instructor, I was left feeling strong, uplifted and empowered. But after this class with Joey, I just felt dismissed and put down. He was unnecessarily rude with innocent questions. Maybe he was in a bad mood, but I know for sure I don't want that energy while learning an intimidating sport. Maybe some people don't mind his style, but it's not for me. I get that some boxing instructors have that blunt, gritty style, but hell, this isn't some seedy underground boxing gym in the middle of the Bronx. It's supposed to be friendly and open to all beginners and people of different abilities and background. There's really no rhyme or reason to treat somebody like this. I don't know if I will come back honestly, which is unfortunate. I even told a friend to come with me, but now, I am not so sure about the referral. But if I (or we) do, I will make sure he isn't teaching the class, which sucks, because as a paying customer for this expensive drop-in class ($27 after tax), I shouldn't have to walk around egg shells, avoiding instructors and afraid I might say the wrong thing. And are other instructors like him? Is that the culture SBG is creating? Why would I waste my money for an hour of being berated? read more

Saw something today that made me HAVE to leave these guys a review: They are awesome. The vibe in there is chill and friendly, super nice people running it. And importantly, they are caring, generous members of the community. A guy came in there stuggling with some clearly serious mental health issues, and JZ *I think that's his name* talked him down and tracked down some of the guy's folks to come get him and help him along - and he stayed with the guy for a while as this all unfolded, being attentive and calming - all while he continued training his clients... Who were ALSO cool! Some places would have just tossed him out. Or worse. But this kindness and patience is next-level, and although it doesn't have anything to boxing or training, (which these guys are also great at) it speaks to something deeper and more important. In these days of people not caring about each other, this is what we all need to strive to be like. Or, at the very least, we all need to patronize businesses like this in our communities. Kudos to the people at Seattle Boxing Gym. I'm a fan. read more

My wife and I recently signed up for private lessons (2 people) to get in better shape and work on our self defense. After our private lesson with Martin, we were hooked! We've now been consistently going for 3 months. The gym and trainers are so friendly, welcoming and knowledgable! You won't find a better and more inclusive boxing gym in WA. We commute from Tacoma and it's well worth it! We're learning so much from Martin and really appreciate his knowledge, patience, support and coaching. Joined this recently since it had great reviews and one of the few places that held classes during COVID. I love this place! My bf and I have differing abilities (I've been boxing for some time and he literally could not throw a punch before joining here) and both of us always leave exhausted. Emil and Elizer (I think he's new) are phenomenal coaches, super funny and light-hearted. Class makes me realize how unfit I've gotten cause of COVID and general laziness.... They also play awesome hip hop music so that's a motivator when you cant move your arms anymore 45 minutes into the 60 minute class! read more

I had a private lesson with Emil today. He was very kind and personable. I highly recommend him. I have not really worked out for two years. I was totally exhausted at the end, but I am very glad I challenged myself! I am a complete novice to boxing training. I was very intimidated at first. When you walk in, you hear body bags getting hit and grunting. But don't worry! I discovered that will be you in about 3 minutes. Emil was very accommodating to me as a novice and encouraging. The facilities has everything you would need to begin your pursuit on mastering the boxing fundamentals. Everyone here is friendly and leaves their ego outside of the gym, which always allows a good environment. I have been to many gyms in Seattle and California, many good, some bad, and i can honestly say the coach Louis DeAlba is an excellent coach, the kind of coach a lot of gyms lack these days. I watch him work with a lot of the boxers from all levels and each boxer receives great instruction and guidance, which means the coach is passionate about the sport. A coach can always be a coach, but a passionate coach in this sport can be a major difference. I highly recommend this gym to anyone looking to start boxing or further their boxing endeavors. I enrolled my teenage daughter in their individual and group boxing lessons. As a beginner the private lessons were tough but you learn a lot. Once you know the basics the group lessons are fun and the teacher works with you to push you to learn more. My daughter loved it so much she signed her dad up. I spent a good deal of time here over my winter break. I was able to meet all of the trainers and help them get acquainted with the MindBody system. This upgrade has made going to the gym much easier, faster to pay, and easy to book classes for myself. I loved the classes that I was able to take and enjoyed that they also do fitness in addition to technique. Many of their teachers often have fights. The scene here is the no-BS, lots of sweat, gritty vibe you'd expect from a boxing gym and welcoming to women, weirdos, and the uncoordinated. My classes are often at least half ladies, some of the coaches are women, and there's never been a bro vibe, which I appreciate. I'm a 41-yr old non-athlete woman and I've been taking boxing fitness classes here for two years. I recommend these classes to anyone moderately fit who wants to take it to the next level. The workouts are hard, total-body endurance sessions: cardio circuits, strength work, mitt and bag work, footwork drills, and abs for an hour. I've gained upper body strength and cardio endurance, plus a huge stress reduction, from weekly boxing. I also feel more powerful in life and on the street. Well, my eyes and my knuckles have been opened, and I might never be the same again. I decided boxing was probably something that would be good for me, primarily as a source of cardio and strength building, but I'd never boxed before, so I was a little nervous. I saw a sign for Seattle Boxing Gym on the wall, and buzzed the door to get in. The creepy ass concrete stairway leading down to the blaring Metallica music definitely overwhelmed me at first, but the only person down there was the manager, and his friendly smile put me completely at ease. There was a class happening that night, and I decided to join it. The manager quickly hooked me up with the coach for that night, a funny, energetic guy who patiently showed me how to wrap my hands. He got me set up with some gloves and showed me the basic 1-2-3's. Then class began. It was basically 30 second drills of push ups, sit ups, jumping jacks, etc., until we were sweating, then it was time to hit the bags. I've never really hit a bag in my life, and I"ll tell you, wailing on that thing for three solid minutes took everything out of me. We were partnered up with people who'd been training there for a while, and when it was time to switch I had to hold the bag while they hit it - I think that was as much of a workout as hitting it was! All in all, I had an AMAZING time, got my ass seriously kicked (still SO sore two days later), and am really looking forward to going back. Everyone there was really friendly and accepting of a newbie, and I really felt like I got personalized attention showing me the basics. And the first class is free, so it was totally worth it! I'm really excited to see what comes next as far as classes, progress and next steps go. I can already tell this place is going to be addictive! read more

As a Seattle native, I've known about SBG since I was in grade school. Went a couple times in the early days but never stuck around. With the recent flip in management, the place has transformed into something really special. With all of its trainers & instructors being young and active professionals themselves (many of which are undefeated) you get an authentic pro-boxing environment but without the pretentiousness as their outgoing and open personalities (very un-seattle like) create a welcoming and inclusive atmosphere for those who just want to get a good work out in. This place meets or exceeds expectations on the most important aspects of a boxing gym: - The space is large, the equipment is well-spaced and it's not hard to find some real-estate to do your thing. - The trainers are friendly. I am not in the group classes, but from what I can tell, they work well across ability levels. The trainers push people depending on their fitness level and experience. Everyone seems to enjoy them and usually they are quite small, say 3-6 people. - The clients are friendly. Some boxing gyms have this "stay off my heavy bag" vibe going and for the first two months you feel like you are walking on egg shells. Not so here. - There are some pretty good fighters who come here and is easy to get some sparring in. - They have equipment everywhere, just show up with handwraps and you can grab gloves, body shields, pads or even sparring gear for free. As other reviewers have mentioned, there is no shower facility. That is the only knock on this place, but honestly most boxing gyms that do have showers are not ones you'd want to use anyway. read more

I was invited here as a social outing with a new friend. The friend ditched me, but I enjoyed the class that I dropped into so much, I stayed! I've been coming back about once a week for the last three months or so. I love Seattle Boxing Studio. The gym and their trainers have been such a positive influence in my life. As of writing, I've taken one class with Luis, one with Henry, two with Jens, two with Richard and a ton with Paul. I really appreciate the different styles of each of the trainers and encourage new peeps to try out several classes until they find a trainer they jive with the best. The crowd is diverse and friendly. The gym is small but clean. The fees are reasonable. If you have the chance, talk to Jens or Rich about private or semi-private training sessions. Jens is NASM certified and has been training both public and privately for over 2 years. Jens likes to focus specifically on fitness depending on your goal, as well as nutrition counseling. Super great experience at this gym! First boxing class ever, and Emil (class instructor) made my first time taking a class such a great experience. He would take me aside to teach me some basics so I could attempt to keep up with my fellow box-mates and learn the moves. SBG is the best gym in Seattle or anywhere because it got me working out again (a miracle!). I started going after doing nothing physical whatsoever for the previous ten years, so even if you're not fit at all it's okay. The trainers are no joke and they will work you into the ground, which is great if you're the type who needs to be bullied into excercise like me. Or if you just prefer activity and skill development in a workout rather than just lifting. Three of the trainers are pro as well and you can watch them spar in the gym and also go to their pro matches (SUPER fun!). I'm obsessed with this place and usually go to 5 classes a week if time permits. There are also lots of options for class times so it's quite flexible. Great boxing gym for beginners or experienced fighters. The new location has more workout equipment than the old spot. It also has a really nice ring and all the traditional boxing equipment. The coaches and people are what really make the place. I've worked with a few coaches and know all of them by first name. My family lives in Seattle so I visit from Minnesota several times a year. I was in Seattle this past week and wanted to make sure to maintain my fitness level. I box and do martial arts at home. I did some research and found that SBS allowed for per class drop in fees so I went....and LOVED it! This is a no nonsense gym. You walk in and know right away it is a serious place. Rich, who teaches most of the morning classes, is GREAT! He definitely worked me hard and gave me plenty of tips. Luis does the Saturday morning classes and also gives a great workout! I highly recommend this place for those who just want to stay in shape (whether you're into boxing or not) and don't want to have to deal with the "gym rat" attitude you run into at places like LA Boxing, Cross Fit, etc. Give it a try.... read more

I have been working out at Seattle Boxing Gym for a little over three months, and have regularly taken part in group classes since joining. I had not prior boxing experience before joining the gym. Overall, my experience at Seattle Boxing Gym has been great. I have seen improvements in my overall fitness since joining, which I am, of course, happy about. But more importantly, I have made progress at learning how to box. The trainers are great at teaching (and re-teaching) proper technique and footwork, as well as at keeping track of your progress to make sure that you master the fundamentals before moving on to more complex skills. For example, they had me work primarily on my "one" and "two" for the first six weeks before having me put time into learning how to throw a proper hook. I really appreciate the professionalism of the trainers in this regard. Moreover, the fact that I have been improving every week has made working out at the gym very rewarding. read more
