My rating is a little low but I travel very often and have stayed a zillion hotels that include other states and other B&Bs. With that being said, I have seen the best and worst. Sealark would be a 3 based on my other visits to other places. Regardless, I would definitely come back because the hotels in the area are too commercialized for me and there isn't a whole lot to choose from unless you score something on AirB&B. Sealark is much more like staying at home and in the neighborhood but still super close to the beach. Restaurants are in a blink of an eye driving distance. 96th street is about a 3-5 minute drive. I stayed in Loft number 8, which was the highest room in the house and attic style. Steep stairs all the way up but a great workout! The other rooms were sold out so this is was what I went for. I really didn't mind though. The loft shares a sun or picnic area styled deck and one layout chair (better if they had 2...could be a fire hazard?). It's really simple and a nice add-on to have easy access from the loft. The room was long and skinny with a living room area, HDTV, bedroom, mini kitchen and bathroom. AC was on full blast. Good for the husband, bad for the wife but an extra blanket really helped keep me cozy. The ability to cook and have privacy were the pluses for this room. The bedroom didn't have a tv, just the living room and there is great wifi access. There were plenty of windows, a wall full of basic artwork and it was a perfect size for 2 people to have space. The downfall was that it wasn't fancy by any means. I really didn't mind and that's why I would come back, however I could see how someone would be disappointed if they had much higher expectations. The room had a lot of original features since the house was old. I loved the wooden door with old school locks. A few dusty areas but nothing to gripe about. The breakfast was come and go starting at 9 am. It was perfect for us and saved on going out of our way to find a restaurant. My husband and I had the quiche, bread, fruit and the homemade cake. They also offer coffee, water, tea, and OJ. All of it was a treat! Kudos, to the chef for the quiche and cake. The porch out front was another plus. It wraps around and has a few glider chairs. We both loved talking outside and sharing a few drinks. At 11am check out the innkeeper said that we were welcome to come back and use the outdoor shower (post beach) and for a $25 cash deposit we could use the beach tags. Returnable: 90% read more

Just stayed at the Sealark for 3 nights and had a wonderful experience. The location is amazing, just a few blocks from the beach and the boardwalk as well as many restaurants and shops. There are few if any similar options in Avalon and it's a small inn which overall gives it a very special feel. It had a very quaint feel to it and was exactly as advertised. Would definitely recommend as an option especially if only coming for a few nights and not looking to rent a whole home. read more

This place is really a little gem of a bed and breakfast. My husband and I take an annual trip to the shore after Labor Day and when we found this B&B, we knew we would keep coming back. The prices are very reasonable, especially after Labor Day during the week and other off peak times. It is definitely a great value. The location is wonderful as well, it is within walking distance from several restaurants and shops in the downtown area of Avalon and is only about a block to the beach. Best of all, the area is a residential area so it feels very quaint and peaceful (as opposed to the section containing the rest of Avalon's hotels). The B&B can accommodate individual, couples, and even families. In the main house there are several rooms typical of what you would expect to find in a B&B (you can get a peak at the rooms and other info at searlark.com). There is another building that houses one and two bedroom apartments that has a kitchen, living room, and deck in each unit. The owner cooks a delicious breakfast every morning which is enjoyed in an enclosed porch of the main house. read more

Solid! This is the only B&B in Avalon. It is also the only hotel-type place in the surrounding area (around 30th street) - the rest of the hotels in Avalon-Stone Harbor are all lumped together closer to 90th street. This makes the surrounding beach around this B&B less crowded than it otherwise would be. It is also 1 block from the beach and the place that sells the beach tags is right on that block too! It is also within walking distance of all the mini golf and shopping area/restaurants around avalon, so location is quite perfect. As to accommodations, they were entirely appropriate and value for money is very high. The place is clean and well appointed. New owners are pleasant enough without being overly chatty (which is my preference, but may not be everyone's cup of tea). As others have mentioned, though, walls are thin and this is an old house, so you can certainly hear people coming and going up and down the stairs. Room #6 is the smaller room, I believe, and bathroom is in the hallway, but is still private. Bathroom was small but fine and the room itself has a sink in the room which is handy. Oh, and breakfast. Coffee and tea was ready by 7:30-8, breakfast (self-serve) was ready at 9am and usually consisted of fruit, yogurt, some baked good, and something savory such as quiche or sausage in gravy. Certainly hearty and homely but not pretentious or overly complicated. All in all, plan on returning when I return to Avalon. Price to quality ratio is excellent. read more

I'd probably say between 2 and 3. We stayed over 4th of July weekend and to celebrate my birthday in one of the loft apartments (#7) and my sister-in-law and brother-in-law stayed on the second floor in Room #5. Our 2 adult daughters came on different nights to stay with us. PROS: Great Location--2 short blocks from the beach and a block from the main drag with all the shops and restaurants, so walking distance to nearly everywhere. The B & B is on 30th Street, which is also where the surfer beach is (keeping the crowds on the beach down) and where they shoot the fireworks off. Fantastic breakfasts--Each day there was a different hot dish (blueberry pancakes were incredible), a baked bread, and a variety of fresh fruit. All of the food was freshly prepared and quite tasty. Also, fresh coffee was ready to go at 7:30, which was perfect for us to have some coffee before our run and before breakfast. The front porch and back deck (which we had shared access to with the other loft apartment) are nice spaces to hang out. The front porch is a great place to sit in the gliders and they do have a table in the corner for 4 or 5 people to sit around. This area is the definite highlight of the place. The back deck was very nice and we did spend some time out there, but it badly needs to be power washed due to years of weathering and algae growth (which does get slippery when it rains). The beds were quite comfortable. There is also an outside shower that you can utilize after you check out, so you can have another whole day at the beach. We didn't take advantage of it, but it is a nice to have the option. CONS: While the owners are relatively new, and while I understand it's an old house and there's charm in that, the place in general is rather tired, run down, and need of some overhauling and fresh paint. It seems that many shortcuts were taken and things were made to be functional, at best. The paint on the railing is chipping all the way up. The rugs are worn and need to be replaced. The showers are basically camp showers with cheap shower heads (actually we considered showering in the better outside shower). The sink and stovetop in our kitchenette are old and quite basic. The refrigerator leaks water and the knob to turn it colder was missing. The locks on the doors are old and stick. The lighting is also in need of updating. Cleanliness was also an issue. There needs to be a good deep-cleaning of the place as there is dirt caked into the baseboards of the bathroom. Our bathroom mirror, the full length mirror, and the windows had not been cleaned upon our arrival. There was only one roll of toilet paper in the room when we arrived (but we were quickly given more when we requested). The soap in our bathroom had been watered down. Again, there was an overall feel that corners were cut in excessive ways. There are 2 futons in the loft apartment, which is why we booked the loft apartment (so that our daughters could come and stay). They are terribly uncomfortable and should be replaced with regular twin beds. My one daughter chose not to stay a second night and my other daughter ended up sleeping on the floor. Bottom line is that these futons are not good for sleeping additional people, which is their purpose. There's a significant upcharge for the kitchenette and for use of the back deck. Additionally, there is supposed to be an additional upcharge per additional person. To be fair, thankfully this second charge was waived for whatever reason by the owners. One of our biggest issues was the repeated use of the common area by the owners. The first night of the stay the owners were in the common area watching tv, but we figured they were waiting for people to check in. The second night they were there just hanging out watching tv, which we thought very odd. On the third night, the night of the fireworks, they had a party on the front deck with their friends and family, thus basically taking over the best part of the B & B when it was full of paying guests. This place has definite potential and certainly has its pluses, but given the area and what they are charging they need to do better. It's a charming old house, but it needs some upkeep and some TLC and the common areas of the house need to be reserved for paying guests. read more

This isn't my first rodeo ,., not inviting at all! There was no common space in the house only out on porch... The place needs to be cleaned... I mean really cleaned! Things need to be upgraded , our door didn't lock... No communication except for payment I've stayed at many bnb and inn keepers were warm and friendly... Very cute B & B in Avalon. Ask for Room #2, it is very well appointed. If you are traveling with pets, they also have an apartment area attached to the house that you can stay in. The house was built in 1901 and offers a lot of charm. The whirlpool tub in room 2 is a nice addition with a super comfortable King size bed and fireplace. I do think the breakfast could be a little more gourmet. It was average. The coffee mugs are super cute with a picture of The Sealark on them, so I had to get one ($10). We took a weekend get away and stayed here last summer. It was a great time and a very nice, convenient spot to visit again and again. We planned to make it an annual beach trip but I'm not sure they survived Hurricane Sandy. read more

New owners and live-in inn keepers have cleaned up the only bnb on the island offering warm personal service including off-street parking, wifi, beach tags and a delicious breakfast of quiche, fresh baked goods, fruits and beverages after a restful sleep all a block from the beach. This is a great place to stay in Avalon. The b&b is very clean and well kept with very friendly owners. We stayed in Room 2 which has a huge bed and great natural light coming through the windows which face the beach. The front porch is super cute and cozy with comfy rocking chairs. The breakfast was delicious with many options and the owners are really great about accommodating dietary needs. Overall, this is definitely a gem in Avalon and I would recommend staying here! read more

For the past several years my husband and I have been celebrating our anniversary at the SeaLark. We obviously love it as we come back year after year. The location is great a short walk to town and/or the beach. Lots of great restaurants around. Boardwalk is nearby for morning bike rides and evening strolls. The innkeepers are very accommodating. They will show you around and they leave you be, showing you outside shower (if you so desire - I love outside shower after a day on the beach) and a shared refrigerator where you can put some food/beverages. The rooms are very nice and beautifully decorated. We have stayed in several different rooms and they are all nice. Breakfasts are great. I have an egg allergy - and even I find plenty to eat. There is usually an egg dish, some fresh baked breads, some delicious fresh fruits, jams, muffins, toast, juices and coffee/tea. It's hard to find a reasonable place to stay in Avalon/Stone Harbor for just a couple - this place is a gem. And when you are "down the shore" you will spend so little time at the Inn, but if you do, there is a nice porch to sit on or parlor to sit. There are rooms you can bring your dog. So I always enjoy seeing the dog guests as well. read more

I agree with Matt's review and we should have read it more closely. The breakfast is delicious and the owners are very nice. The location is excellent, very close to the beach. The central AC with individual unit controls made the extremely hot and humid weekend tolerable. However, the make-shift futons in the loft are very uncomfortable for sleeping. The owners said they plan to replace them by next season. I agree with Matt's comments about the need for better cleaning - the place needs a thorough professional detailed cleaning. Considering that the place is still in the process of being renovated and still needs a lot of work, I think the price is high. One thing the owners could do off-season to see all the details that need to be fixed or improved is to pack a bag and stay overnight in each room, sleep in each bed, shower in each bathroom, and so forth. I also recommend a check-list when preparing the room for guests to make sure nothing is missing and everything works. read more
