I would suggest someone read ALL of the Larry Degroodt / Seal King reviews even if they aren't "recommended" by Yelp. They are remarkably similar to my experience which caused the court to issue a judgement against them which Larry has since settled since my initial review. (Hamptonburgh Town Court, Index # 22030014) They will also ghost you once problems arise as described in several reviews. His salesperson, Chris Flood shields Larry and enables the ghosting, acting as a buffer so you can't get to him. I am a retired civil ENGINEER, so when I wanted to redo my driveway, I had a couple of ideas about how to do it a little differently than the way it was previously done. I had called three different contractors and each one came out to see the job, seemed to understand and agree with how I would want it done, but each one never was able to commit to doing the work at any time and none of them were able to offer me a price quote . I had seen the quality of Seal King Paving's work at two neighbors houses and was very impressed with the quality of their work. When I called their number, Chris offered a specific time when he could come, he arrived promptly, gave me his recommendations and was able to give me a written proposal on the spot. Especially because the others had disappeared on me, I was very impressed and then, I was floored by how reasonable I believed the price was. Chris said he and Larry and crew would be able to do the work later that week. They came promptly as promised with an Experienced crew of eight more workers. They tore out all of my old driveway and disposed of it, brought all the right equipment for proper compaction and placement of new locally purchased asphalt. We discovered our driveway had some sinking and drainage issues. We contacted 3 companies to get bids to have it repaired. One of these three was Seal King (SK). All of our communications with SK were through Chris. He was knowledgeable, straightforward responsive and took the time to understand all of our concerns and issues. He explained what he thought was required to fix it all. Then on the spot gave us a written proposal with good details of what the job would include with a competitive price for the project as well. VERY HAPPY CUSTOMER ALL THE WAY AROUND. From the first phone call to the delivery, this experience was excellent for me. After I closed on my house three weeks ago the first thing I wanted to do was install an asphalt driveway (gravel isn't safe when you have knee and back issues). I called them for an estimate. We set an appointment for that Friday and they were here promptly at 6:30 as promised. Originally, I was going to use my handyman to move the gravel at the top of the driveway to the area that will be my patio and shed area but these guys called back and said they could do that and remove the tree stump as well for just a $100 more and then lay the asphalt. They fit me in their schedule just a few days later and today - it's done!!! GORGEOUS! They moved the yucky dirt and gravel and releveled it setting a perfect set-up for the new patio that will be put in soon. I couldn't be happier. Larry and his team are terrific - pricing is reasonable. If you want the job done right the first time - call them. They ripped my driveway up then they say we can't do it until it dries up. It rained and rained . After a month of not having a driveway they finally came to pave. They went very cheap on black top where the rocks from underneath are showing. They don't return your call. I still haven't used the driveway 2 months now. Very unhappy, they took my money and ran. Larry came to my home very professionally to give me an estimate, he was recommended to me by a co-worker. I got many estimates and seal king was reasonable. I hated the I'm the best around guys that wanted to charge me an arm and a leg and are completely full of them selves. Not even a year ago, I hired this company at the cost of nearly $10,000 to repave my driveway. After speaking to them extensively and Larry saying all the right things I went with them for the repair. He seemed honorable, trustworthy and said he stood by his work. However, quickly after them completing the job there seemed to be issues. They put in a gravel parking area without pitching it for the water runoff which left the parking area and grass around it almost intolerable to walk on when it rained. The water puddled and the grass area became extremely saturated. I called and asked if they could pitch it only to get an angry Larry telling me how I live 45 minutes away and they will do what they can. However, it is almost a year later and they still have not showed up. He became agitated when I continued to call to find out when they would be here. I didn't let anyone drive on the driveway close to 6 months (and became the butt of local jokes) because the Asphalt Association recommends not to drive on it that long, yet, my driveway is already cracking. Also, parts of the driveway are already pulling up. I contacted Larry, however, have not gotten a response. I will update if they do what's right and correct what is obviously shabby work. What's upsetting is that while they worked I completely took care of them. I bought/cooked them lunch, which ran close to $75.00 each day and provided them with as much coffee, soda & water as they needed throughout the day. I tried to be understanding when they began to slow down and really worked on being a model costumer. It's sad when you have a company which doesn't take customer service seriously. That's the difference between a repeat customer and a one off. I will never recommend them to another person if they do not correct the obvious problems. My husband and I work extremely hard for every dollar we make and it took us 6 years to finally save up enough money to get the work done. Below is everything that happened between Seal King Paving and I. Larry from Seal King wasn't professional enough to come and speak to me face to face or man enough to be responsible for Seal Kings error in measuring my driveway. The measurement was wrong and the employee who took it did come to talk to me and admitted he never had a driveway as mine and he remembered it was supposed to end at a big rock on the side. If Larry was honest about his measurements he would have told me for a certain amount of money he can extend the driveway more. But he didn't because he knows he made a mistake and thinks I will just go away. Well I won't. I'll be back every year with updates on if he finished the job or not. My advise to anyone who hires Seal Kind paving is get every detail signed in writing. Don't give Seal King half of the money in cash. Have it written they can't change the job unless it's with the person who contracted them. Keep in mind when you hire Seal King that they don't care about their name or reputation by letting this go. If it was me and someone was saying what I am saying about Seal King I would take them to court. I still might since I have the pictures and the agreement and the bill for $6,900.00 and only one check for half that amount. I have reviewed the response made by the business in reference to complaint ID# 10822294, and have determined that my complaint has NOT been resolved because: 1) The measurements seal king said they followed were not correct. Is he holding me responsible for their measurements? 2) He (?) might have set the measurements himself but they were taken wrong. What seal king showed my wife was the curve he was going to put at the end of the walkway that ran along my deck. That was all he told her to look at. 3) Seal king is out and out lying saying I had complaints with the previous contractor. That I will take up legally later. That is a false statement, one he better have proof of making. The business has responded. Please see below: as the customer stated in his complaint..he asked for the driveway to be widened 5 ft..we made the driveway 5 ft. wider. i personally measured it myself..i then knocked on the door,showed the wife my paint marks on the ground and she agreed that's where her husband wanted the driveway. the last time they had their driveway paved they had issues with that contractor as well. Better Business Bureau: Me: I want the job finished to the measurements I contracted for. This size doesn't allow me to use the driveway I contracted for. -- Me: Good morning Larry, I was instructed to wait a few weeks after sending you my previous email dated 08/05/15 for a response on finishing the driveway job I contracted and paid you in full for. The measurements being wrong is not the fault of the home owner which I believe you are aware of. Your employee can attest to that. All I asked for from day one was to have the job completed the way I contracted and so far you fail to complete it. If I get no reply in a few days it can' be said I didn't try to give you every opportunity to bring this issue to an end. I didn't measure the driveway. I asked for 6 feet wider. Chris measured to the rock and said it's 5 feet and he could move the rock if I wanted. I said no, go to the rock. Are you saying I am responsible for your measurements? Pave up to the rock is a no-brained. Are you going to correct it or not? It's not my error. I'm the one who paid in full for an incomplete job. -- Thanks, Joe -- Larry: The contract said five feet wider than original driveway. We added give feet to original driveway. -- Me: Thanks Larry but I rather you come and finish the job I contracted you for. I am still missing 186 sq. ft. I paid you for. I don't understand how you leave a customer hanging. Larry Jo:e -- U call me next year and I will seal that driveway for free for u -- Me: Thanks Larry. I think it was nice for Chris to stop by last week to talk with me about the job. Guess it was bothering him on how I felt. I didn't know you asked my wife if your markings were acceptable and she agreed. I don't feel she should have been asked to change what I contracted and worked out with Chris but that's history now and I have to live with it like it or not. Anyway the 5 feet wider should have brought my driveway up to that large rock according to the measurements explained to me and where I wanted it to end. The only thing that didn't change was the price I signed for when the job was accepted. As I said it is a nice job but not what I wanted, needed, or signed for on the contract.
