We actually came here two mornings in a row and enjoyed a nice number of coffee selections. Each day the line flexed from just 1-2 people to lining up outside the door and after the first sip of day 1 coffee (caramel macchiato, hot): I could see why. This is the real deal. A real coffee shop where your expert barista concocts your drink fresh for each order. Day 2 coffees we mixed it up a bit - a "black squirrel" (mocha with extra shots of espresso) and an iced oat milk drink. Really great flavor and the perfect way to start our day. There is limited indoor seating if you wish to stay for awhile to work on a fresh baked bakery item (the case had at least 10 options to choose from - all looked really good). There is also some outdoor seating available in front of the entrance. Both days, we elected to take our drinks to go and stroll through the downtown Kent area while enjoying the delicious coffees. Tips: 1) the menu is available inside - on the back wall and also on a banner over a bank of windows to the "right" of the bakery case. Had I seen this I could have spared my question of "what is the black squirrel" but the barista was polite and didn't mind. 2) ignore the line. If there is one - trust me, it's worth it. Allow 30 minutes to pick up your coffee and you should be within this timeframe. read more

Love the atmosphere, so cozy. Great place to have a laid back coffee date with a partner, friend, or yourself. Staff has always been friendly and easy to chat with and accommodating. Love the locally roasted retail bean selection, love being able to have a good variety to take home and enjoy. Lattes in house are often a tiny too sweet for my liking, but are always yummy-- the seasonal drinks are super fun to try. read more

This place has great vibes and is a nice place to study at. But, the coffee and teas are not great. I got a regular vanilla latte and a London fog. The vanilla latte was over sweetened and I couldn't drink it. And the London fog tasted just like nasty hot milk, absolutely no earl grey flavor in it. read more

Love this place! Cute and easy to get to in downtown Kent with parking out front. My sister and I visited on Sunday and got right in. The baristas were friendly and gave us time to peruse the good sized menu. My sister opted for a seasonal specialty drink - an iced dirty pumpkin chai with sweetened cold foam and I created my own - an oat milk cappuccino with sugar free pumpkin and brown sugar cinnamon. I used to love their coffee. I won a $5 gift card to Scribbles when I first moved to Kent and that is how I found out about them. I went to use the gift card and it had no money on it?? So that was a bust. I got coffee here a few times which was nice. However, parking is limited espically on busy days. I usually had to park down the street and walk there. Delightful is a good adjective for this college town coffee shop. Main Street in an old building with tables made from repurposed bowling alleys and vintage chairs. Great little kitchy coffee shop. There's plenty of space to stay & sip a latte or work. The drinks and many of the pastries are delish. I love the variety. One of my favorites is the tumeric chai latte! The only challenge I see is if there are 2 or more guest the lines is long and service is slow. The method to get drinks out the front door isn't quiet up to par. But if you're not in a hurry the beverages won't disappoint. They also have punch cards and collect plastic bottle caps to reuse and make park benches. Love it. read more

Love this place. First place I spent on my first morning in Kent after moving here, a little nervous because I didn't know anyone, and I am very used to routine. I'm so grateful that this place and its people have become a staple in my new routine, and in my new self-care. I can order something delicious, different, and still trust that all the ingredients are wholesome, including locally supported and organic spices and even herbs. Also, multiple options and alternatives for people with different dietary needs and lifestyles that can be difficult to find other places. Also, it's fun to look at the rotating local art shows hung up and drawings on the table mats while sipping your coffee, or for a break from your computer while working and studying. Can be having a bad day, but I know there is always a smile from a real and authentic person behind the counter and throughout the shop. I love sipping on coffee and love here. When she read trump is my president, she said trump is not the president, and she said it to where is made me feel like a piece of trash, or less then a human. then I heard her mutter under her breath to the other girl worker loud enough that I could hear it, and she said, I'm so Fucking done with racist comments, and then continued to treat me very disdainfully, about that time my wife walked in wondering what in the world is going on.. i just played it cool so as not to embarrass her in front of everybody and repeat what she had said, she should be removed from her job, if she can't keep her cool, just because of a shirt that I like. read more

The atmosphere here is great, along with assorted seating, a couch, and white paper to draw on with their crayons. This last touch is awesome and I haven't seen that in any coffee or tea shop before. Drawing is meditative and profoundly calms the mind. So major props on this! They only have one coffee for pour over, so if you really want a selection of single origin coffees I'd go elsewhere, but this is not a dig on Scribbles. I tried out their Bolt Junior drinks which contain a double shot of espresso and a spice set of your choosing. This is also a unique idea I haven't really seen elsewhere. They also have black, red, and dead eyes (1, 2, 3 shots of espresso, respectively). Their apple pie Bolt Jr was very tasty. I am writing a new review since the cafe has made many improvements: New bar style seating with abundant power outlets, a new service counter, local baked goods, and better air conditioning. Atmosphere is casual, boho-artsy. Student arts and crafts displayed for sale. Fantastic array of artisan drinks. Reasonable prices. Front room has large windows overlooking the street. Back room has a few tiny windows for light. Many shareable games offered. There's still only one toilet. Literally closet size. Friendly staff will assist a disabled customer, using the side door to accommodate a wheelchair, but navigation is impossible once you get situated. It's an *old residential building * likely late 1800s so allow for this limitation. Parking is ok, if you don't mind walking from the public lots at times. Street parking is competitive with the beer joint across the way. Side lot fits 6-8 small cars, on gravel. read more

Definitely the best coffee shop in Kent. Unlike the Starbucks down the road, this place isn't overrun with undergrads. You're more likely to encounter a group of hippies. Their selection of espresso beverages is quite expansive. They offer far more varieties than Starbucks and far better quality to boot. I'm a big fan of their pumpkin frappe this time of year. Otherwise, I mostly stick to the delicious cappuccinos. In addition to espresso, they offer smoothies and tea, as well as tasty baked goods. Try the muffins and cookies- you won't be disappointed. I'm pretty sure the place is family-owned, which I love. Every staff member has been more than friendly. They are very casual and laid-back so be patient if your latte doesn't appear in thirty seconds. It's worth the wait. And hey, take that time to chat with your barista. The establishment has two rooms full of comfy chairs and couches and lots of books to thumb through as you're sipping your drink. Scribbles is the quintessential little coffee shop that every college town needs. A cozy atmosphere, a fair trade and expansive menu and delicious little snacks make this place the perfect study spot. I'm a huge tea person, so I love getting the flavored chai tea or the London fog tea. Perfect for a cold fall day! The staff is super helpful and very kind. The tables are covered with paper and crayons, so feel free to doodle to your heart's content! There are a bunch of different seating options from couches to tables to outdoor seating, and there are all kinds of little books and trinkets that fill the store. Saturday with the Novel Writing group - NANOWRIMO going on - look us up! - stayed from 11a-7p since I help do the Write-ins. Posts about eclectic, laid back decor and college feel are right on. There are a half dozen shelves of used books, some plants in windowsills, jigsaw puzzles, crayons and white scribble paper on tables, hard floors, old sofas/orange upholstered chairs, and ONE shared restroom...also a front room and back room to this cafe. Music was unobtrusive. We were able to work and chat - an impossibility at Tree City (industrial vibe, hard seats) or Sbux (loud, overcrowded, awful climate controls all seasons). I didn't care for any of my three different coffees. Tried a latte, the house roast (nicaraguan, a lighter roast one), and decaf. All too weak for my liking. NONE had distinct personalities, either. Bummer. All were served close to drinkable temp, not scalding, happily. Refills are $1.50. WOW. My favorite haunt, Nervous Dog, is a $1.00 and that's a snobby upper-class area (Stow - Silver Lake - Cuyahoga Falls) ... heck, they drive Prowlers and Mini Coopers there! Sbux is .50, and idk about Tree City, Last Exit, or Moe's (that one in Stow-Kent, .50 I think). Panera's are free. McD's are free. The register (touch screen) automatically asks for tips of $1 - $5 - and up...which was tacky to me...there is a tip jar on the counter. Baristas were polite - no complaints. Cider donut was large, flavorful, better than Giant Eagle or Sheetz for sure. $2. My fellow writers had a choc muffin: large and enough for a meal. Local bakery items. Unusual coffee and drinks on the menu...some written on the walls and pillars. Really. How about turmeric in your coffee? They have breve, and other harder to find coffee drinks...I just don't know if I trust them to serve me coffee again! Ack. Paleo? Maybe - they use factory-farmed, Dairymen's brand milk...how wholesome is that for green consumers? (yes yes, industry standard - all places I see use it, unless you ask for organic). Just questioning the "Paleo" post. Parking is better than several years ago, when hours were irregular...was told new owners took over. And that that is a good thing! Street parking is minimal: typical Kent, but some is on the side of the place and in back, though I distrust the safety of that at night. Deserted, low traffic alleys...just 'no'. read more

I'm a person with very simple tastes when it comes to coffee shops. I like strong, black coffee. I like books. I like peace and quiet to read said books. I like friendly service, that I myself can interact friendly with, creating a never-ending cycle of friendly. Simple. No muss. No fuss. Just coffee, camaraderie, and books. My last visit to Scribbles was a brief one. It was a Saturday night, and the streets of Kent were teaming with life. I was with my girlfriend and a friend, and we wanted to have some coffee and a chat, maybe a pastry. Scribbles was the destination. Having lived in this town for a while, I knew that Scribbles was opened later than normal on Saturdays. It was almost 10 pm, so we checked the shop hours on the door before preceding inside. The sign said 11pm. We were in luck. The barista working was a girl around college age with a mane of brown hair. She took a second to spot because she was in the lounge area talking with her friends. After getting her attention, she greeted us by saying, "we're closed...closing. I dumped out all the coffee." My party looked at her confused. The door had been unlocked. The hours on the door said the shop was opened until 11pm. And I knew for a fact that coffee was part of the name of the business, having ordered hundreds of coffees at this location before. But no coffee. Now, I get it. Sometimes a place closes early, especially on a slow day. It happens. But why close an hour early on a busy night before students are home for the holidays? That's not good business sense. Especially, when the worker taking care of the shop was going to be there talking with her friends anyway. It's not like she was reducing the cost of overhead by keeping all the lights on with the door unlocked with no closed sign on the door. The bottom line is that service like this happens all the time at Scribbles. The hours of operation are solely listed for the convenience of the workers, not the customers, so why even list them? You can find better coffee, better service, better books, better prices, and a better atmosphere elsewhere. Scribbles has finally broken this camel's back. read more

Exactly what a coffee shop should be. The various coffee drinks are all excellent. The baristas are skilled, patient, and friendly. The prices are reasonable, and the quality of the coffee renders them a bargain. There are always various homemade confections available: the peanut butter fudge is legendary (among my friends, at least) and the no-bake cookies a close second. They also offer a small assortment of bottled specialty drinks. The actual venue is another bright spot. Nice, clean, but not overly fancy. A very "homey" vibe, and it's very comfortable to spend several hours drinking coffee and visiting with friends. A larger-than-average space that doesn't lose the "intimate" feel that characterize the best cafes. My lone complaint is that they're not open on Sundays. (to my knowledge). It's a testament to how great of a place Scribbles is that I'm genuinely disappointed when it's closed. read more

My intent on driving to Kent last weekend was to try that new Bent Tree Coffee Roaster right next door to Scribbles. They were closed. So don't try to go there beyond 3 pm on Saturday. I was happy that Scribbles was right next door. It is such a cozy place. My friend who works in Kent said that all of her coworkers agree that Scribbles is the best coffee shop in Kent. My first time going to Scribbles Coffee was a great experience. I moved to the area towards the end of last year and I'm glad I finally got to stop by. The atmosphere is very relaxing and chill. I love seeing all different ages of people coming and enjoying the coffee and pastries. I'm excited to go to Scribbles once school starts back up!
