This place has a really cool vibe. Small, quaint, super nice staff, lots of coffee and tea options. Reasonably priced. However, my latte was underwhelming. The espresso didn't shine through and left me with pumpkin spice flavored milk. I will, however, be back hoping to try some black coffee to give this place the true taste test. I want to add stars to this review, so I'm hoping my next experience is better on the coffee end. read more

This place is my home away from home - it is AMAZING. The employees are welcoming and more than willing to help you out with what to order if you need help. They support local artists by selling their artwork and also help other locals by selling their cookies scones, etc. in the display area. The back is surrounded by books that anyone can pick up to read on their couches or at their tables. Each table has it's own piece of paper on it with crayons and colored pencils to draw on. In the summer they have chalk that you can decorate the side walk with. On some days of the week the coffee shop offers a place for a local folk band to practice, playing calming music in the back. They have free wi-fi and a bathroom for the public to use. Their tea is the BEST and their coffee is great too. You haven't lived until you've visited this place! read more

I have been going to this place for 4 years now and would never get coffee from a Starbucks or Tree City compared to Scribbles. The selection of drinks is awesome, and you can substitute for soy and almond milk. Also, they have a wide variety of baked goods which are vegan and gluten free. If you want to feel adventurous or try something you have had brewing in your mind for awhile, their baristas can make it happen. Scribbles is a perfect atmosphere for when the Kent weather isn't the best. You can bring your computer and grab a coffee and a table right next to the windows and watch the city go by on a drizzly day. It is also a great spot on a hot summer day when you're out and about and want to stop in for something cold and refreshing. read more

I hung out a lot here a few years ago. The pastries were home made, the coffee was consistent, the prices were fair, and the atmosphere was great for studying. The owners were great and treated their employees well, and the family that owned it was amazing. I have stopped back in pretty recently a few times now that I'm back in school, and I can say with certainty that I will not be making Scribbles my place for coffee-fueled study this time around. The shop changed hands last year and the quality of the place has really taken a downturn. The new owners are really reactionary to criticism and my favorite barista got fired because of an overblown complaint. The once home baked pastries are now really obviously bought in bulk and sold as though they are still made in small batches. The new owners can't pull an espresso shot and don't know about coffee as evidenced by both my verbal interactions with them and their newer menu offerings. And as for the prices, well, I stopped in the other day and paid $2 for a small to-go cup of bitter light roast. Additionally, the once study friendly atmosphere has been replaced by a family friendly one, with kids running around being loud and the dim, soft lights replaced by strong, bright ones. It's atrocious. Given that many of their blends are now produced by Bent Tree, you're better off going a block up the road and grabbing a cup there - they'll make it better and you'll pay a fair price. read more

My family and I came across this place while we were in Kent for a few days. What a find! We loved their coffee and they have some of the most unique flavor combinations and lots to choose from! The atmosphere was very nice for sitting and relaxing with your coffee as well. I would go back to Kent for this place alone. read more

This place exemplifies what a small town, family-owned coffee shop should be. The prices are reasonable, the drinks are well made and prepared quickly and the space is comfortable and acts as a meeting place for both those in the neighborhood as well as those visiting. It really is a lovely environment with friendly service and great little snacks and treats. I love stopping in to grab a drink or hanging out to work on a project. Love this place! It's artsy, comfortable, and friendly. Not your boring old Starbucks or other franchise chain coffee shops. It offers a variety of tea & hot drink combinations that other coffee shops don't have. You can also enjoy a table outside in the fresh air or indoors surrounded by book shelves, art, and gifts. I love the ambience of this place, been coming here for years. However, I had to take to Yelp to report that the quality of their coffee has taken a serious plunge lately. The drip coffee is so weak, even the dark roast just tastes like coffee-flavored water, with a nice mouthful of grounds waiting for you at the bottom. This is frustrating because as a café they should offer something a step up from a Keurig-quality brew, but sadly I've felt like I'm wasting my money here lately. I hope they can retrain the baristas or else I'll have to go on the prowl for a stronger cup, which will be a shame because this is my favorite spot in town to meet with friends or just sit and read. Cute place tucked a block from the main drag. Too bad the window seats look at the big trucks parked at the mill. Still window seats are my favorite. And free wifi - I worked all morning sipping a triple-shot latte and munching a muffin. Well, coffee was a little bitter and served in a paper cup - yet I came in, put down my brief case, took off my hat/coat. Looks like I'm stay, ya? Forgot to ASK for a real mug. Served with lid on - no latte art? And I would like a clean table. I wiped it myself...grrrr. It rates 3 stars more by default on lack of good options in Kent. Back room offers comfortable sitting and very relaxed atmosphere, and atmosphere IS a real plus here. Some simple attention to detail would prove some easy, no cost improvements. Our whole family loves scribbles. Great fair-trade coffee, lots of books to peruse and purchase (if desired) for a steep discount over the marked prices, small tables, wi-fi and crayons to color on the paper table covers in the back. We bring games in the winter and meet friends for their fantastic (and big) muffins and coffee or tea. They host live music sometimes and are an Around Town" performance site for the Kent State Folk Festival. It's also just a block or two off the bike trail by the Crain Street Bridge. A wonderful coffee shop in Kent! It's just down on Water Street. I believe it has a great view of the Flour Mill across the street that transports you to another time/era. My wife and I have lived in several big cities and quite enjoy the view from the front windows or outside. The service is exceptional and the barista's make a great latte. I'd bet it's the best in town beating out Starbucks and Tree City by far. The back room has books for you to read. Students and local townfolk here make it a good place to be read more

Scribbles is a little away from downtown so make the trip north on Water street to find it. Currently there is construction on the nearby bridge so you will need to enter from downtown, but when the bridge is finished it will be very easy to access. read more

Like a favorite pair of jeans, Scribbles fits like a glove. The shop is comfortable lacking the sterile corporate feel of other coffee spots in town. Being there is like going to hang out at a friends house for a while and drinking some of the best fair trade and organic coffee ever...period. The drink menu has stand by's that you can count on and also new selections that keep it interesting. Affogato? Had no idea what this deliciousness was before Scribbles. Scribbles is the only place in town that will oblige your request for a bulletproof coffee....tell your Paleo friends to stop in and prepare to be amazing and satisfied! Kick ass kombucha on tap? After my husband had two of the worst cups of coffee ever (at other places in Kent), we went online to find this place. So glad we did! It was great - small, cute, cozy, and with great (locally roasted, I think?) coffee, and good snacks too. A good selection of organic teas, a small selection of gifts, and shelves full of books just made it all the better.
