We went here and I had the biscuits and gravy while the biscuits and gravy were on the upper end for me (I try these a lot , haha) the dish and its sides as a whole felt a bit lacking. My friends tried several other of the dishes. They told me were good but didn't really hit the mark for any of us today. This place is amazing and exactly the type of local places I love in San Antonio. They were playing the best jams while I was there for lunch, btw. The people are super nice and helpful. This little gem is less than a mile from my house. I love getting a sandwich and side for lunch. The blt sandwich is my favorite. You also get a mini dessert which surprisingly is not my favorite. The wait at NOLA was too long so my dad I and stopped for brunch here. I'm glad I read the reviews because when we arrived it didn't look busy but folks kept coming. The kitchen is small but the food was really delicious! I had the croque madame and the egg was cooked just right with a runny but warmed through yolk, the bread was a star - substantial but not stodgy - and the side of spinach, tomatoes, red pepper and onion was full of flavor and a great counterpoint. The potoatoes were well seasoned and cooked. The coffee was basic, but good and the baked goods in the case looked beautiful. My dad has the Irishman's breakfast and he ate all of it and enjoyed it as well. The building has a lot of potential and so does the food. read more

I'm all for locally owned cafes and bakery such as this new kid in town with a bakery AND cafe aura. They are open til 2pm with separate breakfast and lunch menus. I went around noon and they already ran out of their chicken tortilla soup. I opted for the quinoa bowl instead, and it came with sliced avocados and warm pita chips. The wooden floors and ceilings throughout provide an unequivocal warmth, in addition to the heavenly aroma of fresh baked goods and smiling staff that greet you as you first step through the door. The colorful painted mural on the back wall adds just a touch of whimsy while the large, decorative moldings throughout, repurposed accents, and soft natural light make this historic home feel cozy and cheerful. All food is thoughtfully prepared daily and everything is homemade, from the assortment of pastries (savory and sweet) beautifully displayed in the bakery case to the freshly baked bread served with all their sandwiches and soups. I ordered the Ham & Brie sandwich which was quite good! Served on their scratch-made bread, it was grilled, lightly buttered and crisped to perfection, layered with creamy Brie and DaBecca smoked maple ham with just a touch of Bonne Maman apricot jam and Dijon mustard. 2 stars for the food and 3 for the dessert. I had the chicken salad sandwich with a quinoa salad as their lunch special with a half of a chocolate brownie. It was a generous portion but lacking flavor. The chicken salad was quite pickle-y but other than that didn't have much flavor. The bread it was on was good. The quinoa salad was about 2 cups of quinoa with 8 cherry tomatoes, 2 chunks if cucumber, and maybe 4 olive halves. While the quinoa was cooked very well it didn't taste like it had any sort of dressing or seasoning on it. The chocolate brownie was fine but nothing exceptional. We've been here before and had much better desserts experiences. read more

I enjoyed my breakfast at Scratch Kitchen. Their pigs in a blanket are really good, the bread tastes buttery. The Bread pudding has a cinnamon roll taste, which is amazing for me! Their breakfast sandwich is filling, I just didn't like the bread too much, it overpowered everything in the sandwich, tasted too bland. After checking out the Farmer's Market at the Pearl, we were feeling hungry so the hunt was on for something close by. My daughter found this, only a few minutes drive away. Now, we love "hole in the wall" eating places. They are overwhelmingly great places to eat. Scratch Kitchen was no exception. From the moment we walked in, the lady behind the counter greeted us with an enthusiastic welcome. Once she learned this was our first visit, she got even more excited to tell us about their menu selection. We made our orders, then waited outside. Our food arrived within 10 minutes. I had the biscuits and brown gravy, with eggs over medium and some sauteed veggies. It was delicious! the eggs were just runny enough to provide some sop with the biscuits. My wife had the croques madam, eggs and veggies. She had never had that, before, but also said it was delicious. Scratch Kitchen is far enough away from where we live (Northwest San Antonio) that it's unlikely we'll ever purposefully come back to eat. However, if we're in the neighborhood, it will definitely be on our short list to have brunch! read more

The food here is so delicious, especially the desserts so you're not going to want to be on a diet of any sort when planning to go here. The lunch is perfect and comes with so much food!m for so cheap!! I got the blt with a salad and the Mediterranean quinoa. The salad is more like lettuce with dressing on it so it mixed perfectly with the cucumbers and cheese that was mixed in the quinoa. The bacon was cooked to perfection (my perfect is super crispy) and the avocado was the best addition to complete this sandwich. Apparently I have to go back for the mozzarella sandwich because I was told that is their most popular! They're busy and if you're trying to get in and out for a to go order it can hard if there are people in front of you. There's not a way to grab your food and go. Also, the quinoa seems slightly different than it used to be. It is still good, but it was truly something special previously. I really enjoyed my experience at Scratch Kitchen. However, I was a little disappointed because I thought I was going to get breakfast. We did arrive around 11:00ish. (My friends were slow picking me up). By that time they were serving lunch. I had the half BLT and the soup of the day (Creamy Mushroom). I must admit...they are serious about the Bacon on the BLT. You definitely do not get shorted there. Also, the Creamy Mushroom soup was heavy on the mushrooms...also a love of mine. In addition, your meal comes with a dessert. I love Scratch Kitchen. This neighborhood restaurant is very charming. As soon as you step in, you feel like you're visiting a good friend who is cooking up something simple and delightful in their home. I came on a chilly, drizzly day and just wanted some soup. I know Scratch Kitchen has soup, salad and sandwiches, just the perfect cozy day foods. You can find parking alongside the houses nearby. We ordered their soup du jour with the ham and brie sandwich. The soup had very fresh vegetables and the flavor was pretty good. It had a little too many carrots for my tastes but good overall. The sandwich was warm and tasty! I also loved the side of broccoli and fruit. They offer mini cupcakes for FREE with lunch. It is the perfect dessert bite. I thought the food was pretty decent and the atmosphere quaint. My only gripe is really with portion sizes. As you can tell from the photos, everything is very, very tiny. 3 florets of cauliflower is more sample than side to me. I know in TX the portions are often larger than what we can fit inside our stomaches. So, in the back of my mind, I feel like I was swindled somehow. I think it is a perspective thing that needs a lot of time and effort to change. I probably won't be going here if I was very hungry though. I do recommend it if you want a quick bite to eat and a nice atmosphere to relax in. read more

We happened upon this little neighborhood cafe and bakery one day and what a treat it was, literally....and boy do the have some treats! This is a quaint little converted house turned bakery with top notch sweets and eats! Instead of listing all the things I have tried on my numerous visits it would probably be easier to list the few I haven't! I've tried so many items, I've lost count but will try my best to list a "few"! On my last visit( which was a to-go order) I was lucky enough to get there in time to get their Quiches. We got both the Veggie quiche (which was really an artichoke and Gouda and some other tasty fillings with big beautiful pieces of artichoke all tucked nicely into a fabulous crust (which I could've eaten just plain all by itself) and the Bacon Quiche, cheese and spinach quiche, although I'm not a fan of bacon in food (I know,blasphemous) because I feel it tends to overpower, not enhance the taste. I have to say that both were equally good and I can't say enough about the crust because as you know that's the basis of a great quiche or pie! Did I mention pie? Well, they also have a deep dish apple pie (and I mean probably 5-6 inch high deep dish apple pie) that is also outstanding - that was tried on another visit! My favorite are their muffins, they are the star of the show. I've tried the blueberry crumble raspberry crumble, gluten free chocolate topped with a raspberry...if I didn't just tell you it was gluten free, you wouldn't have known. I used to be gluten free a couple years ago and when I say this muffin is something to jump at the chance to eat, I'm not blowing smoke! It is rich and fudgy like a decadent brownie...oh by the way, they have those too and are another hit! They make two of my favorite cookies as well, a classic peanut butter that actually tastes like peanut butter, (most of the ones I've tried lately are super sweet and lack the taste of the traditional peanut butter cookie) and my 2nd favorite which I don't even know what it's called is this round domed cookie that is drizzled with chocolate but when you bite into it, it's so rich and super crumbly resembling a shortbread of sorts. You can tell it's made with lots of butter and it's just heavenly. Besides all of the sweets I've mentioned, they sell an array of eclectic sandwiches all served on homemade breads, which they also sell in house, plus numerous daily specials! They sell so many fabulous items, you honestly need to stop by and try them out, but do go early as this is a smaller establishment and they do sell out! So run, don't walk to this honest to goodness gem, that I'd love to keep all to myself, but want them to thrive so I can enjoy their offerings for a long time to come!
