I genuinely don't understand how Scotty B's has 4.4 stars on Yelp. The service was great. Our waitress was friendly, attentive, and clearly excited about the food. She made us feel like we were in for a treat. Everything is fresh, nothing is microwaved, and by her account this was going to be a whole experience. Unfortunately, the food didn't live up to the sales pitch. Not even close. We started with the IB Twinkies, which are basically bacon-wrapped jalapeño poppers stuffed with cream cheese. They were mid to mediocre at best. Think about the ingredients: Fresh jalapeño, bacon, cream cheese. That's already a winning combination. But there was some kind of ham or other meat stuffed inside that just got in the way. A good jalapeño popper doesn't need much. Give me the fresh crunchy heat of the jalapeño, salty crispy bacon, and cream cheese to mellow everything out. If you're going to make a jalapeño popper, just make a really good jalapeño popper. Next was the Scotty Doesn't Know smash burger. For around $15ish, this thing was SMALL. My friend and I split it and we're talking maybe three or four bites each. The spicy ranch was basically ranch and Tapatío, and the whole burger was just kind of... fine. Smash burgers work because of their simplicity. Crispy beef, cheese, bread, sauce, balance. Once you start complicating that, whatever you're adding better make the burger more interesting. This didn't. I wouldn't pay that price for it again. Sadly, the BBQ Chopped Cheese was the real offender. I don't know what this was, but it wasn't what I think of when someone says "chopped cheese." Instead of chopped hamburger and cheese, the meat had this weird thready pulled-pork or pulled-beef texture. There were large chunks of green bell pepper, an off-putting barbecue flavor, and then the entire thing was slathered in this cheese roux where I swear I could taste the flour. It was basically a pile of pulled meat, peppers and onions covered in floury cheese sauce. I couldn't get past one bite. Our waitress didn't ask us what our thoughts were. Mercifully. And that's ultimately my problem with the food here. If you're going to make classic dishes, make them outstanding. If you're going to play with expectations and reinvent something like a chopped cheese, make sure you've mastered what makes the original good before you start introducing new flavors and textures. The location is cool. It has that beachy, surf-bar vibe, you can see the ocean, and the service was stellar. I take nothing away from the atmosphere and our server. That's honestly what pulled this review up to three stars. But the food? Mediocre to gross and all things in between. And considering the four-and-a-half-star rating and the expectations we walked in with, genuinely disappointing. I don't blame the wait staff, and I don't blame the cooks in the back. I blame management or the owner. If THEY think those dishes are delicious, that's fine. I can't change someone's messed-up taste buds. But I CAN say, as someone who has eaten some of the BEST food San Diego has to offer, it's very easy to recognize what isn't. Scotty's service was exceptional. We were two families and our server took great care of us from the moment we arrived. She seated us on the patio so we could have our own space, which made it easy for the adults to enjoy our conversation while the younger boys sat at the counter overlooking the parking lot, right next to our table. It was the perfect setup. What really stood out was her attentiveness. She noticed my friend struggling with her hair and offered her a brand new hair tie. She mentioned she always keeps a pack on hand just in case someone needs one. It was such a thoughtful gesture and one of those little things that makes a dining experience memorable. The food was definitely flavorful. I ordered the bacon burger, and the way they seasoned it had every bite bursting with flavor. The French fries were perfectly crispy. That said, I do think the value fell a little short for the price. The burger was on the smaller side and the fries were an extra charge. Even so, the flavor made up for it. My hubby ordered the BBQ Chopped Cheese and loved the secret sauce it was drenched in. He said it reminded him a Philly cheese steak but even better. Personally, I wasn't a fan of the fried pickles- they had some kind of cinnamon-y flavor I didn't care for. There was only one server at the time of my visit but it didn't affect service at all, he was welcoming and engaging with every guest I could see. The only downside is pricing. I got two burgers (not especially big ones, fries not included), one order of fried pickles and water and the bill came out to $40-something which went up to $50-something with a 20% tip. So the food is good. Fries are crispy. Burger patties are crispy. It's somewhat fast to get your food. Unfortunately the two times I've been, the order has been messed up in some way that's just odd. Both times it's been related to toppings. I mean it isn't difficult, especially when the order is repeated back, you know the person taking it heard right and wrote it down correctly. Apparently I gotta provide me own cheese for a cheeseburger. I suppose we could have ate in, as opposed to takeout, but then I'd have paid a tip (again) to ensure what I paid $40 for was correct. Great establishment that recently moved to a great spot across the street from the Pacific Ocean. Parking is challenging during beach hours but public parking lots are within 3 blocks. They are know for good burgers but I ordered the bazooka chocolate chip cookie and vanilla ice cream which was small yet delicious. The staff was so friendly and helpful. The owner himself came to me to get my hockey game and basketball game side by side at the bar. We did selfies and just had fun. They are open every day usually until midnight. So many burgers that it took me awhile to try the Chicken Salad...but I'm glad I did! It was super delicious with house made cilantro jalapeno dressing which was only a little spicy. The chicken with jerk seasoning was SO good! And a generous portion. I couldn't finish it in one sitting. Drove by the gem a few times and noticed a new spot in IB. Today we decided to get some good lunch. I had a good feeling this place was gonna be a hit. We'd never been here before and were hungry for lunch so we thought we'd give it a try. We absolutely loved this place! The whole staff was very sweet and attentive. We were seated and hadn't gotten our menus yet and one of the other servers made sure we'd been helped. The inside was decorated very nice and everything was clean. There are some video games toward the back too. The food did not disappoint. I got the OG Double Scotty Burger. It's not a smash burger but had two pretty thick patties that also had a good char and crisp to them. The amount of garlic aioli they put on it was perfect. I tried a bite of The Mighty Max and it was really good too. The pulled pork had a good Smokey flavor and the bbq sauce was good too. The mac and cheese was creamy and they gave a good sized portion. The fries were some of my favorite I've ever had. Everything was seasoned and cooked soooo well. We're excited to bring other people here an to come back again. Ooohhh, delicious. I got the spicy one. The patties are juicy and the flavor is divine. They put garlic aioli on every burger, and I am definitely not complaining about that. The only problem is they're a tad small. Also, I wish the bun was thicker. Thankfully, I also ordered the BBQ hush puppies, and they were transcendent. A normal side of fries should be more than a few nibbles. I ordered carry out and they packed the salads already mixed with the dressing which was unfortunate as they got soggy before we got to eat them. Just ate here and I'd have to say for a new burger joint I would never expect to eat such nasty, greasy mashed up meat yall would call a burger. The chocolate milkshake was literally Hershey chocolate syrup and the ketchup was some knockoff brand that's top is easily removable. Not saying the service was too bad but expecting a 18% tip after charging 11 dollars for nasty terrible cream chocolate slop is pretty disgraceful and yall should be closed. Food was very disappointing. Homemade potato chips were burned but were raw on the inside. BBQ chicken patty was small and dry in a large boring white bun. BBQ pork was drowning in sauce and was a small serving in a large bun. It required a napkin to wipe off the excess.
