Candlelight Tribute to Lauryn Hill
Kandice T.

This place is absolutely beautiful and the perfect venue for Candlelight Concerts hosted by Fever. The Tribute to Lauryn Hill was the second one that I've attended here, with the first being The Tribute to Beyonce. The seating is just about perfect in the aspect that each row is slightly more elevated than the one in front of it, making it hard to choose a "bad seat". Many other Candlelight Concerts are hosted at venues where the seating is on a level floor, and then it's important to buy seats in Zone A if you want to be able to see. Another plus, in my opinion, is the free on-site parking. If you get there early enough...and aren't in a huge rush to leave immediately following the event, you'll do just fine. The venue draws an eclectic crowd. We saw Mennonite women, Muslims, black people, white people, young people and old people in attendance. There is no food or drink served here, probably due to the reverence needing to be shown, but that was okay. The cathedral is centrally located in Downtown Indianapolis near many bars and restaurants.

I attended a community event here this morning and it was a beautiful location for a breakfast. The bells rang a few times as I was parking and that was pretty cool. We were in the downstairs/basement room and it comfortably held 300+ people. I only saw a small part of the building during my trip but it was impressive. They partner with Kahn's Catering and we had a delicious breakfast. Parking was free (at least to me for our event) and right outside so it was convenient. We did have to walk down a few flights of stairs so I'm not sure how accessible it is. There may be a more accessible entrance somewhere else. I would love to attend another event here or do a tour to see more of the building.

I've been here for weddings and other events, tonight was Halloween classics by a string quartet by candlelight and it was fabulous. The venue couldn't have been more perfect for the music showcased. Only down side was it was so hot in the auditorium we were in.

Went to the Candlelight Concert Series by Fever for the holiday show last night. It was fantastic! They offer other musical shows featuring songs by Taylor Swift or Queen to name a few. The venue is small enough that even from zone C, we could see/hear just as if we were closer. The acoustics are wonderful. So many ornate details, I can see why it would also be a great spot for weddings! Parking can be a bit of a mess to get in/out. They do offer free parking in the fenced lot, but there is only one entrance in/out so if you're the later showing, you're fighting those leaving and it's a bit chaotic with everyone crowding to one place. Likely the only time I'd suggest paid, street parking over free.

My daughter had her 1st dance show here in August. Because of Covid, which we say now A LOT, this was the venue we were open to because if capacity issues etc. They just checked everyone's temp at the door and had space between families. Of course all wore masks. I just wish that the dancers didn't have to wear masks too on stage. It's really pretty in here and the views of the stage all around were good. We are now doing the Nutcracker production here this year instead of our normal location. I think it will be a beautiful location for this also!

Beautiful architecture sets this building out from the surrounding ones. It is huge & you can see it from a distance. We didn't have time to go in, but certainly enjoyed the beauty of it. I'm sure the inside is just as gorgeous & wouldn't disappoint.

I've driven past the Scottish Rite many times and admired the Gothic architecture from afar, but never took the time to look at it up close until last week. Tours of the building are only offered Monday-Friday from 10:00 - 2:00, so when I had a day off work with no plans, I decided to take advantage of the opportunity. My mom and I went on a guided tour of the building, which was free and led by a volunteer Freemason with Scottish Rite branch. What I really liked about the tour was that our guide didn't have a canned presentation for us - it was a little off the cuff and he didn't disclose many specific details (even when we asked for them). Some people might be turned off by this, but I figured that if the tour guide had told all the minute details, they wouldn't really mean a whole lot to me at the time, and I certainly wouldn't remember what type of wood a table was made of or the year in which it was built a few days later, so what difference do details make? What mattered to me was that the building and furnishings were beautiful. The tour takes you all over the building and lasts a little over an hour. The stained glass windows throughout the building were very striking -- it was pretty cool to see such elaborate, secular designs in the medium. I also loved seeing the ballroom, with its massive chandelier and intricate ceiling, and was very impressed by the theater... seeing it completely empty almost felt a little reminiscent of the Phantom of the Opera for some reason. The tours are available for private individuals as well as small groups. Best of all, they are free! Another point of interest which I had no idea about prior to visiting -- there is actually a small cafe inside the Cathedral which serves lunch Monday-Friday. If you're a tourist to the city, or just happen to be a resident who has never been to the Scottish Rite, I think it is worth visiting. If you don't have time for a full tour, at least walk around the exterior to appreciate the unique architecture.

We missed the time for the indoor tour. But the outside is amazing! Would live to revisit someday and see the inside. And the tour is free.

However, looking on the outside can't begin to prepare you for the wonder of what's on the inside of this former residence that now serves as the Office of the President for Indy's Marian University. The mansion was first built by James Allison, co-founder of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and the Indianapolis 500. The ceiling's Tiffany stained glass windows allow the sun to shine brightly inside. The mansion's most impressive room was, in fact, originally designed as a marble aviary by Allison to contain his wife's exotic bird collection. The 2-story, red-brick arts and craft style home continues to have an expensive chandelier imported from Germany, a sunken conservatory, and a 2-story pipe organ. Seriously. The property itself is remarkable. Atop a cliff that overlooks a wetland, the property includes greenhouses, ponds, and orchards. Seriously, I would become Marian University's president just to spend time in the office. Allison passed away in 1928 and the property remained unsettled until it was acquired by the Sisters of St. Francis - the founders of Marian University. At one point, public tours were offered but this is no longer the case. You can, however, rent it for events (which is how I've been inside, though it's definitely not wheelchair friendly in any real sense).

One reviewer stated "The Allison Mansion remains perfectly restored and beautiful to an almost eerie degree." Eerie alright--there is a disquiet about the Mansion: it is said to be haunted! Builder James Allison was a wealthy man and founder of the Indianapolis Speedway and Allison Engineering Company. The mansion was built between 1911 and 1914 and is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Allison died young from pneumonia at age 56. The mansion was later sold to what is now Marian University,. However, many locals and visitors feel that Allison never really left the building! Most stories claim Allison still haunts the mansion, rearranging books in the library and furniture as he sees fit. But there are other ghostly goings-on here: the spirit of a little girl who drowned in the basement pool still lingers around the mansion. "Visitors claim to have seen the ghost of a little girl and even heard shrill screams and heartbreaking cries from the basement. Voices in the attic have also been reported," said www.onlyinyourstate.com. I can understand the ghost of Allison hanging around: this place is plush! No expense was spared while building the two-story, red-brick, arts-and-crafts-style Mansion. The exquisite marble aviary was built for Allison's first wife's exotic bird collection, Also impressive: the expensive chandelier imported from Germany, a sunken conservatory, and a magnificent music room with a two-story pipe organ. Outdoors, enjoy lush gardens, manicured lawns, greenhouses, ponds, and orchards that overlook a wetland now restored and maintained by Marian University. Upon Allison's death, there was some concern about the historic property's fate. Bless the Catholics: Allison Mansion was eventually acquired by the Sisters of Saint Francis, who also founded Marian University. Allison Mansion is still part of the university. It is open for public tours and can also be rented for private events. The Mansion is a feature on annual Halloween Ghost Tours. 5 YELP STARS for spooky spectacular!

It was one of the most memorable Pride events I've been to presented by Indy Pride due to the unique venue and atmosphere. This past Wednesday, I had another opportunity to visit Tinker House for a Sound Bath presented by BFF Indy. It was a very different experience as the intention was a more meditative one opposed to a party with a DJ the last time I was there. It was still daylight when I arrived and mostly empty which made it convenient and ideal to explore the bridal suite and take pictures of the venue without any obstructions. The Sound Bath was held on the dance floor with lots of natural light surrounding us. I love the idea of the Sound Bath in this fun space. Although, I've had them in the past at a yoga studio which was MUCH quieter. My constructive criticism is that there is too much noise coming from the traffic outside (especially because this was at 5pm during rush hour) even on the second story of the building to relax and get the full benefits of a Sound Bath. There were no blankets, pillows or yoga mats either which isn't necessarily the responsibility of Tinker House but still something to be noted for future events. BFF Indy should have given attendees a heads up to bring their own supplies because sitting on a hard wood floor where people dance and walk on with shoes that have just been outside downtown is rather off putting and took away from the overall experience. The facilitator did an amazing job all things considered. I will go back for events in the future just not if they are supposed to be relaxing. Tinker House is ideal for social gatherings like weddings and parties. The decor is aesthetically appealing and very well thought out. There is a ambient bar/lounge on the first floor in addition to the one upstairs. There is limited parking in front of the building and a coffee shop next door.

The Nest Event Center is located in Greenwood just off I-65 at Main Street. The parking lot is quite large and will accommodate a large event. The interior is amazing and you'd never know it was a former restaurant. The lobby area is very attractive, decorated in beiges and cream, and I could see using this for cocktails, a reception line plus so much more. It worked well tonight for purchasing tickets plus an area to sit and relax while enjoying the fireplace. The versatile ballroom is quite large and can handle everything from a wedding, conference to special events. One of those special events is the Holiday Craft Show tonight. The Event Center has a neutral color scheme and can accomadate most bridal or conference color schemes. This proved to be true with all the colors associated with the Holiday Craft Show. Tonight all different color schemes were used and all the crafts looked wonderful. With this neutral backdrop any decor theme would work nicely allowing brides or companies a great deal of flexibility and creativity. The Holiday Craft Show was a huge draw. Many different types of vendors filled the ballroom carrying Christmas decor, wreaths, jewelry, clothing, wool mittens, woodworking projects, signs, candles, crocheted items, lap blankets, floral arrangements and much more. There truly was something for most anyone's interest and many gift ideas. In the future I would like to take an official tour and checkout pricing for a yearly event I'm involved with. We pre-ordered appetizers, drinks, and all 8 meals for our party of eight and even confirmed everything ahead of time--but the confirmation email didn't show the full order, which would have helped avoid all the chaos. When we arrived, some of our group were asked if the order was correct but weren't shown it, and they were given random flights that weren't the flavors they wanted. Drinks were eventually sorted, but some were wasted due to poor communication. The appetizers were fine, but the main courses were a disaster--cold, delayed, and only six of the eight meals arrived. Of those, only four were correct. By the time the food came out, there was no way to fix anything--two people went without meals, and two had to eat something they didn't want. Staff even argued that we hadn't ordered eight meals, which was completely wrong. For over $300, this was unacceptable.
