I have been a patient of Dr. Tongs for over 2 decades. My journey started with Dr. Tong at his old facility (TMPN). Please see the review written by Robyn E. (6/24/22), she hits it spot on about the professional and personal care that Dr. Tong provides. I brought my significant other to Dr. Tong in 2013, after we had suffered a terrible bicycle accident. Nikki was completely confident with Dr. Tong from the first visit. Dr. Tongs mannerisms are inspectable, he is a very compassionate physician. Dr. Tong has a terrific way of communicating with his patients. It was at Torrance Memorial Physician Network where Dr. Tong expressed to me his concern for not being able to spend more quality time with patients. (see the review from Robyn). I believe it was hard for Dr. Tong to leave TMPN, but patient care was his first priority. Since Dr. Tong has started his concierge doctor service, he always has more than sufficient time to spend with patients. He makes sure to answer all your questions, and goes into complete detail about your concerns, in a way that you are able to understand. Not just medical jargon. Dr. Tong is not a physician that believes in prescribing pharmaceutical drugs. He has a more holistic approach for each patient as a whole person. Taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of an illness. Dr. Tong also provides (via-internet) roundtable workshops with different physicians of all type of practices to further your understanding of healthcare. I have never known any other doctor who provides this type of education to his patients. I have had two types of cancer diagnosis since begin a patient of Dr. Tong and I have the utmost gratitude for all the upfront and behind the scenes work that he has and did for me! Dr. Tong not only has sympathy, but EMPATHY for my situation. The way in which Dr. Tong provides his professional knowledge to your health concerns is truly remarkable. One cannot place a dollar $$ amount on their health and wellbeing of life. Dr. Tong has certainly been more of a doctor than I could have ever imagined. Dr. Tong is an amazing physician. I came from UCLA where I had to communicate through a portal. Once I missed my blood draw appointment and I wanted to get in as I had fasted for the appointment and went to another location where they had drop in appointments and I realized how lucky I was to have an office to attend and not have to wait. I have never had to wait long in his office. His attention to detail, his level of empathy, the descriptions that he gives me when going through my annual physical, which includes a blood panel, and the his thoughtful approach to medicine has been quite impressive. Dr. Tong cares and he deserves to get patients who can appreciate his dedication to his craft. If you are somebody, who cares about your health, has a dedication to listening to those that may know more than you and wants to have a long term positive outlook on your health, please go see Dr. Tong. I have been seeing Dr. Tong since 2015 and after using Yelp to pull up his number - I started reading the reviews and felt compelled to write one of my own, in case you are looking for a new Doctor. Until 2019, Dr. Tong was part of a medical group that required him to see a new patient every 15 minutes. Medical groups have profit targets that don't always align with the principles of care a Dr. would like. In 2019, Dr. Tong started his own concierge practice. You do have to pay a quarterly fee to be a member, but that was only so he could provide the holistic care he felt his patients needed. Every time I see Dr. Tong, he spends 30-45 minutes with me reviewing my health as a whole person and supporting my mental and physical well-being. Sadly in our country, concierge care is one of the only ways to get this personal touch and holistic care. As a single mom of two kids, my overall health is critical to me and my family and I want to thank Dr. Tong for looking after me and his patients the way he does. He is responsive to my needs and always errs on the side of caution. Virtual and in-person appointments can be scheduled quickly and effortlessly. Our health care system is a for-profit industry and many doctors are not lucky enough to leave the "healthcare machine," go out on their own, and truly do what they went to school to do; take care of people, improve societal health and do so with empathy and expertise. Let me explain Dr. Tong. He's very well read, he is methodical about providing the best route for optimal health, and he is passionate. Can he be too direct at times? A loaded question. Patients need frankness sometimes, even if the delivery is unexpected. Trust him, and if you feel discomfort in his delivery, push back. He'll adjust to your needs. read more

Avoid this guy at all costs. The most arrogant and rude physician I've ever encountered. I went to him on a recommendation from my girlfriend, who said he was "very sweet and caring." I found the absolute opposite. He's one of those physician's who thinks a patient is a passive participant--he's the lord, god and expert, so you should shut up and sit there. For every question I had, he had a curt, snide response. When I tried to tell him my symptoms, he cut me off and said, "I don't have time for all your symptons--you're a new patient. If I give time to you, it takes away from my regular patients, and they're more important than you." He actually said this! When I told him I wanted to be checked for possible high blood pressure, he snapped, "What do you expect me to do about it? At your age, if you would have come to me 10 years ago, I might be able to help you!" I could go on, but you get the idea. I was suffering from a fever at the time, or I would have read him the riot act. I didn't understand the disparity between my girlfriend's treatment and mine. However, when I check Dr. Tong's reviews on Yelp, I found that women generally give him high marks, but men give him low scores. This is my first Yelp review and I was compelled to write it because I think reviews for doctor's are unfair.I'm always disappointed when people write a negative review for a doctor/hospital when the issues were related to their insurer or outside of their doctor's control. My experience with Dr. Scott Tong and the entire Torrance Memorial staff has been exceptional. On my first visit he greeted me in the lobby himself because his staff was busy. Overall they were all very attentive, friendly, well organized, and most importantly kept me on schedule every time. I'd highly recommend this location despite the average review it currently has. TLDR: Dr. Tong is outstanding both as a professional and more broadly as a human being. The number of 1-star reviews might seem alarming at first, but most of them are provably illegitimate. Read why below. I have been a patient (of sorts) of Dr. Tong for many years, and in all my interactions with him, his medical knowledge, advice, and professionalism have been nothing short of exemplary. Additionally--and this is where many PCPs fall short--Dr. Tong is an excellent communicator who can explain a diagnosis and its consequences in clear, unambiguous, easily digestible terms. Regarding any discussion of treatment options, I felt that my opinions and preferences were valued by Dr. Tong and played a significant role in determining the type of treatment I received. The rest of the positive reviews will substantiate what I have said above. With that being said, when I came across Dr. Tong's Yelp page, I was surprised by how polarizing the reviews were. Dr. Tong's verifiably high-quality practice being juxtaposed with 12 1-star reviews was jarring to say the least. However, upon closer examination of the 1-star reviews, it is apparent to me that the complaints within them are largely--even entirely--unfounded. Highlights include one dissatisfied patient calling Dr. Tong "Lazy! and dumb for a Dr!" in a short but amusingly incoherent review. Another unhappy patient lamented the supposed disparity between Dr. Tong's treatment of male and female patients before announcing that he and his wife--who apparently was perfectly happy with Dr. Tong's care--would no longer be seeing Dr. Tong. I hope that your 1-star review fixed your insecurities and your relationship. The most recent 1-star review is a buffet of hilarity embedded in the scathing account of a 44-year-old man who "had not been to the doctor as an adult". He asserts at the outset that Dr. Tong "had me risk my life for four years" and seems offended that Dr. Tong "spoke to me as if i was dumb". He then proceeds to strip his review of what little credibility remained with every sentence (can you call them sentences?) thereafter. Anyone interested is invited to read the full review and should come away not worried about the quality of care they will receive from Dr. Tong, but instead about the health and safety of the young child subjected to the parenting of an unequivocally delusional father. These 1-star reviews share a few commonalities that regular users of Yelp should be well acquainted with: logical inconsistencies, contradictory anecdotal evidence, poor (read: no) understanding of the business being slandered, obvious egocentricity/entitlement, thinking that they are more intelligent than someone with years upon years of experience, etc. Perhaps the most incriminating evidence of all is that most of the users that left 1-star reviews have a track record of leaving 1-star reviews at a majority of the businesses that they review (see for yourself if you are skeptical). For example, an astonishing 80% of the reviews of Dr. Tong's most recent 1-star reviewer are also 1-star reviews. The main takeaway is that this suggests something about the character of the individuals behind these 1-star reviews, not the character of Dr. Tong and the quality of his medical services. As one 5-star reviewer of Dr. Tong has elegantly said: "And a tip to anyone that goes: you get out what you put in. If you have a positive attitude and smile you'll have a much better and richer experience." It should be noted that this review is by far the most "upvoted" review with 24 Useful votes and 24 Cool votes. Dr. Tong is an absolute pleasure to work with, and to those who have left 1-star reviews arguing the contrary, take a moment and ponder the possibility that you are projecting your own character onto Dr. Tong. Perhaps you are not looking through a lens but at a mirror. But alas, such musings are likely out of the intellectual scope of those individuals. To conclude, I urge any readers who have somehow made it to this point to lend no credence to the 1-star reviews. Deny them the opportunity to influence your opinion, or alternatively, read them purely for entertainment purposes. Dr.Scott Tong, had me risk my life for four years. He was rude and spoke to me as if i was dumb. Not only did he not help me. He made me not want to deal with another Dr. again. Just look at his reviews over the years. Now imagine how many people did not write a review. At the time of my appointment I was 39, years old. I showed up on time or 3 mins early. I did not need to fill out paperwork, I filled it out when I made my appointment. I was made to wait 30 minutes. Once I was brought back, I was told about showing up 15 minutes early to doctors appointments (News to me). I had not been to the doctor as an adult. Being 39 years old and a new father, I wanted to get a colonoscopy. And speak about issues i had neglected for many years. I brought a list and spent my entire appointment hearing about him not having time and about me being late. He refused to speak to me about any of my issues. With the exception of one. He told me I was to make a new appointment and to not be late. And I told him "I wasn't late, I was on time" Which seem to make him angry. I have not been to the doctor before or since. I am 44 years old as of yesterday. And I still haven't gotten the test that I wanted to schedule that day. I have been paying $900 a month for insurance, I do not use because of doctor Tong. I have ignored chest pains, chronic acid reflux, a shoulder that I could not use for eight months. Back pain and several other issues. The most serious being chest pain which thank goodness went away. I purposely haven't been back to ANY doctor because of my experience with Dr. Scott Tong. Turning 44 yesterday & being a father to a now 3 1/2 year old. I've decided to see a primary care physician again. I have not had a primary care physician, because of Dr. Tong. I have risked my life and health since my appointment. His poor behavior and attitude caused me to never deal with another Dr. I waited 4 years to write this. I wish i had written this sooner. I just wanted a doctor to help me stay alive for my child sake. I left never wanting to speak to another doctor again. He should not be allowed to practice. read more

I came in for stomach and urinary issues and I felt rushed which was fine as long as he would be able to prescribe me as fast as he got me out. That did not happen. I went in on a Tuesday and never got a call back. I had to call Wednesday and didn't get an answer till Thursday. I expected some kind of antibiotic like I usually get but was told to just get an over the counter product that still hasn't solved anything. I'm disappointed because I'm still in pain with the over he counter product and didn't get the help that I paid for. I won't be going back. read more

Dr. Tong is the ideal doctor. I don't think there are many doctors out there that care about their patients on personal levels like Dr. Tong does. Obviously, Dr. Tong is extremely busy, but there were numerous cases where he would make the time for me to get my medical form filled out for school at the last minute. I've only visited Dr. Tong a handful of times, but every visit sets a new bar for a physician. Any other doctors I've visited pales in comparison to Dr. Tong. He is knowledgeable--continually and diligently studying and learning more about today's health problems--but also humble, not afraid to reference other professionals if necessary. He excels in communication in both direction, always attentive to my concerns and explaining the diagnosis and his thoughts in layman's terms. I highly recommend Dr. Scott Tong as a personal physician. I had high expectations when I started and he has met or exceeded all of them. Dr. Tong has good communication skills, takes the time to respond thoroughly to questions, references other professionals as needed, and cares about my health and concerns. I like the fact that he continues to educate himself on the latest medical issues and resolutions. He engages with his patients by arranging and participating in health walks and hosting on-line meetings with medical guest speakers. I couldn't agree more with the negative reviews for Dr. Tong. This was literally my worst experience with any physician I have ever had. He is extremely rude and does not understand he works in a service industry and that we are paying to see him. He insulted me and treated me like a piece of garbage. I will never come back to see him because he is obviously one of those people who doesn't care about their patients and thinks they are so much more intelligent than everyone else and that we are all wasting his time. This guy is worst than a used car salesman, I went to him for the pain in my leg, and his arrogance didn't allow him to listen to me when I told him that it might be a nerve, instead he ordered physical therapy for my apps, after it didn't work and I have wasted almost a month going back-and-forth he orders an MRI that he had already ordered the first visit so now we have two MRI physical therapy and going back-and-forth. he still won't take the time to listen now I'm like $4000 in the hole beside what he charge the insurance after all that he took a wild guess and said that I may have Austria process meanwhile I was going through the pain for over 6 month, so when I couldn't take the pain anymore I went to the emergency they gave me a shot of ibuprofen The pain was gone. Dr. Tong is a great PCP. He listens, gives great advice, and takes his time with me. I don't feel like just another patient in a long line of others. I really feel like he cares about us and our health (both my husband and I see him). My family is so lucky to have found Dr. Tong! My daughters both attend college in Southern California, and he has taken such good care of them over the past several years. When I went into Dr. Tong's office, I was basically a train wreck. My GYN threw his hands in the air and said there's nothing else he can do for me other then cut some of my parts out. Another primary I used before told me 'I'm not sure what you want me to do with you'. 'Help me please?' is what I wanted to say.... She dismissed me and sent me home with a 'good luck' and some pain medication. Dr. Tong took the time to listen to my lengthy story, was genuinely caring and concerned and really wanted to help me. He never made me feel crazy or like everything is just 'in my head'. He is very knowledgable, sweet and if you forget to ask something, he doesn't get upset if you call. He doesn't make you feel like you're wasting his time. He works fast, but efficiently. He has convenient hours, before and after work. I would definitely recommend him. read more

This guy has a very nasty attitude. He will scold you like a child if you don't come in for follow ups on medication. I came in for a follow up since they wouldn't refill my prescription. He starts giving me an attitude as to why I waited so long (over a year). Even though his office kept refilling my prescription over that time period he starts going crazy and accuses me of not caring about my health. He then goes on a crazy rant about Obamacare and how he's responsible for me if I were to get sick. Then I bring up why didn't your office let me know I had to come in for a follow up every few months instead of just refilling my prescription. He then gets smart and says he's not my dad and I should go see another doctor. Even though he treated the office visit like he was scolding me as if I were his child. Luckily I know people in the Torrance Memorial Health System. Hopefully someone higher than him will tell him about his nasty attitude. Since here's no point to tell his staff since they are his subordinates. I hope the other doctors in his group aren't like this guy. read more

I cannot say enough positive things about Dr. Tong and his staff. I have been seeing him for years at his old practice. It was never my intention to follow him to his concierge service as I thought I was young, and therefore didn't need to invest in the "luxury" of concierge service. Days before Dr. Tong was to open his new practice, I suffered a stroke at the age of 45 with no risk factors. It was at this time that I realized I couldn't trust my care to anyone else and so I transferred to his concierge practice. In the year that I have been with him, he has treated me and helped me navigate through the process of seeing numerous specialists. When I couldn't immediately get into a local neurologist, he got me into someone at Cedars who ended up finding the cause (which wasn't diagnosed locally) and I was able to get the procedure necessary to fix the issue/cause of the stroke. He's also helped me navigate through the residual issues and picked up where all the specialists left off (after treating the emergency situation). I wholeheartedly recommend Dr. Tong to anyone considering giving themselves the best medical care - it made all the difference for me. And while it may seem like a splurge, considering what I (and I assume most) spend money on - it's definitely the most worthwhile investment - our health!! And did I mention that he has the best staff ever!!! read more

I am not a fan of medications and am always trying to find an alternative.
