I don't like to give negative reviews, but I feel like I need to warn others. I had a root canal and over the course of 6 months, the crown fell out 3 times. The third time they tried to fix it I ended up with an infection. (I believe because they didn't clean it properly). After trying 2 different antibiotics, I had no choice but to have all my upper teeth pulled. It was the only way to get rid of the infection:( Before this happened to me, I referred my son to their office. He also had a root canal and to this day he is still having pain. read more

I would like to start off with the positives I experienced at his office, on Northside and Cole, here in Boise, ID. If you aren't in the mood for a long review, then scroll down to my summary instead. Positives: 1) In person, the staff are very polite and a delight to speak to. 2) On the phone the staff are cheerful and try to be helpful. 3) The office is very clean, as are the work stations. Negatives: 1) Dr. Hayhurst talks like a used car salesman, in regards to selling you the latest in cosmetic dentistry (such as Invisalign), and subsequent visits, seems to forget he's already spoken to you about services, you've already expressed no interest in. In other words, it appears he doesn't listen, and is just trying to make the sale. 2) In April of 2022, Dr. Hayhurst said I needed a crown on a tooth and root canal. Oddly, that tooth wasn't even in pain or felt uncomfortable, other than it had very obvious signs of excessive wear and the filling was failing. I honestly thought this was going to be a fix on that, but instead, Dr. Hayhurst insisted that this root canal was needed and I needed a crown, because my bite was wrong and causing the wear on my teeth. a) Before my root canal appointment, I had a temporary crown placed. In the days before the permanent one was ready, the temporary one fell out 3 times, and upon the 4th time, it cracked in two the day before the appointment. The temporary crown was not replaced, and the dentist made a passing guess that they had a bad batch of cement. b) When Dr. Hayhurst could not finish my root canal, because he claimed he didn't have the tools to finish it, he sent me to an endodontist, which consumed even more of my dental benefits for the year. c) Fortunately for me, the new crown is still good, but honestly, the crown looks super amateurish. But It's functional, so I'll leave it there. 3) Billing and Services. Oh boy, this was a mess. My insurance said the office made mistakes, the office said the insurance are making mistakes, but I go ahead and pay over 200 to the endodontist and 640ish to the dentist office, even with my insurance. a) Fast forward to June of 2023, I sent two written requests for copies of my X rays. An email sent to the address shown on their website AND another as a DM (which I made a copy on my laptop). Neither was answered. I even asked later in August, in person, and was shined on by the front desk girl, saying she doesn't know if they can do that. She made no effort to ask anyone else in the office. I wanted a second opinion from other dentists, in regards to Dr. Hayhurst's diagnoses. b) One other surprise I got from my bi-yearly cleaning, was a bill for ANOTHER 644 dollars, that my insurance apparently didn't cover. I was not happy to pay this, since Dr. Hayhurst did at best, a mediocre job with the root canal and crown, and the inconveniences I had to endure with his supposed "bad cement" the temporary crown couldn't stick to for long. Dr Hayhurst has zero shame, in charging you full price, for mediocre work. c) In addition to (b) he recommended ANOTHER crown for the tooth right behind the one he did the mediocre job on. Saying the temporary filling he put there, which I was unaware he did, was wearing away. And he added that the invisalign mouth piece would help solve my other problems. I said I just can't afford it, so he suggested a mouth guard instead, which would slow down the wear greatly. It was right then and there, I knew I needed to find another dentist. Explanations will be given in the summary below. Summary So going back to the mouth guard (Negatives 3 (c)), I was thinking, if he can make the mouth guard and put in a filling for a third of the price of the crown, why didn't he mention that? Answer: In of my own opinion, he's about the money, not your dental health. I am very sure he knew the filling and mouth guard would work equally as well (and vastly cheaper) vs. putting in a crown. With this in mind, he's a cosmetic dentist first and foremost, and a dentist second. It is also of my opinion, if you want to take care of your dental health, look elsewhere, because if you are looking for a cosmetic dentist, from my experience, he's mediocre at best, and the most expensive dentist I have had the misfortune of coming across. In closing, I think the most amusing thing about his office, is that he has a MS Word made sign, taped to an electric toothbrush, that says if you give a 5 star review, you have a chance to win that toothbrush. I debated about leaving a negative review about Dr. Hayhurst several months ago, but held off until I saw another orthodontist to buy replacement Vivera retainers. I thought I would share what I experienced. First, I don't have any issues with the Invisalign protocol by Dr. Hayhurst. I was fairly pleased with the result. At the end of my treatment, I elected to buy the Vivera retainers, which five years ago cost $300 for four sets, and included upper and lower retainers. It was recommended that I use and discard one set per year, so I expected to have to buy replacements eventually. What I didn't expect was that the price would increase so exorbitantly. An increase was not unexpected, however I was extremely disappointed when I was told that one SINGLE retainer would cost $250 to replace! I explained to the person I spoke with that Dr. Hayhurst had done my Invisalign. I wasn't sure I had heard correctly when she told me the cost, so I confirmed that EACH INDIVIDUAL retainer would cost $250 apiece, which meant that to get four complete sets, (one set per year for four years), would cost me $2,000! I was truly dumbfounded. I asked her to check with Dr. Hayhurst, and following that she confirmed that the replacement cost was accurate. After the initial out-of-pocket cost for Invisalign, to find out that ONE set of retainers for one year would cost $500, I was extremely disappointed and upset. So, after waiting several months, getting desperate and considering options, I selected a different orthodontist, Dr. Laura Lineberry, to buy replacement Vivera retainers at a substantially lower cost. Something to think about when considering Dr. Hayhurst for Invisalign. read more

Just realized I had never posted my review from 2014 on Yelp. Best to do it now than never. Here is copied/pasted from my google review, I want this to be known: I dropped my wife off for a $99.00 new patient special including x-rays and a cleaning. When I returned I was greeted with a bill for $888.88. She was pregnant at the time and they decided she needed work done; they used fear tactics on her. She was told that her pregnancy could be in danger if the work wasn't performed. Of course she said yes, wouldn't you? The pricing, however, was completely out of bounds and we had to open up a credit card with care credit. I will never return and neither will anyone I know as long as I can help it. Awful experience. Also, when we called for x-rays to go to another dentist, we were informed they don't even have digital copies to send to the other office. They said they would need a week to get us a copy and the receptionist was rude to me on the phone and rude to my wife when she picked them up in person. A very unpleasant experience. If you ever see any special there, take my own word and the word of some of the other reviewers. A $99.00 special is really a minimum pressure special of $250+. In my case it was almost $900.00. I already had a pregnancy to get through and those are incredibly expensive. This place exploits individuals with their "loss leader" specials. Don't fall for it. read more

I found this dentist about 3 years ago in the yellow pages one morning when one of my teeth cracked and broke. They were able to schedule me in that day! They will often have some unscheduled time in case of dental emergencies such as mine. Now for the review of care...but first a bit of my own history. I have been the recipient of much brutal dentistry begining at age 6. Despite my endeavor in oral hygine; my teeth are simply weak. I've had root canals other places over my years and I can tell you without a doubt Dr. Hayhurst is the most gentle and understanding. They have t.v.'s on the ceilings with headphones to help drown out the sounds and distract from the inevitable actions necessary to repair a tooth. Extra care to place protective eyewear on patients from light glare is also a kind service. Billing is never fun, but services are all explained carefully and no service is rendered without consent. I appreciate that he also explains personally all the services needed in order to have a completely healthy set of teeth. That doesnt mean you have to have all the work done; but its nice to know what's not right in there. I'd also like to add I'm 100% self-pay (no insurance)...and Dr. Hayhurst doesn't have the most inexpensive services, but the quality of care and service is top notch! No wonder he is the official dentist for the Idaho Steelheads! read more

We've been going here for awhile now. We are satisfied with the staff, dentist and procedures. I'm not one to "dentist-hop", Dr. Hayhurst is the 3rd dentist I have had in my entire life. Trust is a major issue. Dr. Hayhurst is very conscientious in what he does. I just had a crown done and it is by far the best looking one I've had done! I would recommend this dentist. Thank goodness I found a different dentist. I have actually always enjoyed getting my teeth cleaned, and I am, maybe, a teeth health fanatic. Dr. H, of the Star office, recommended that I deal with my bite in order to ensure that I don't get bone loss and end up losing teeth. As a young person I had braces, but I recognized that the bite was off, so I settled on treatment with Invisalign. I had been a bit wary of Dr. H, because in the chair when I got cleanings I could hear him talking to other patients and his demeanor did not seem friendly, but rather, dismissive. Detail in explanations of procedures were limited. Even when he spoke to me, there was always a "matter of fact" air, "believe me or not" tone. At one visit he wanted to fill a dent/anomaly in one of my teeth that I had since the tooth came in. I said, "nope." I decided that after the Invisalign was finished, I was going to switch dentists. After several weeks of wearing the Invisalign, I had some major pain from one tooth that caused me to scream. I got in to see him on a Friday. He took an x-ray and announced that I needed a root canal. I was quite disturbed and upset by this news. I asked if the Invisalign was the catalyst. He casually stated that, "well, you have traumatized teeth... you had braces as a kid and I filled a bunch of areas of receding gum... and that particular tooth." Why would a dentist recommend I have more orthodonture if I might have to have a root canal? I was never shown the x-rays. He wanted to do the root canal right then. In tears, I left the office, thinking I would wait it out a bit and decide later. The usual secretary, Lisa (a total sweetheart), wasn't there that day, which topped off my disappointment and stress. Dr. H has since left that location, so Star people, you might be in luck with the new dentist. I ended up seeing another dentist on the next Monday. There was another x-ray done, and, wow, the dentist showed it to me and assured me that I did not need a root canal. I just needed to give it a little time, leave the aligners in longer instead of switching out on schedule, and use Sensodyne. I'm all healed up. I prefer an honest, caring dentist, who doesn't talk down to me. read more

This was the worst experience I have ever had in my life in regards to professionalism and courtesy. First when my son left his appointment he referred to his experience as the most painful dental procedure he had ever had, then complained about ongoing pain for 3 weeks that gradually got worse until he had to go see another dentist emergently needing a root canal and crown. We had called the emergent number over and over with no reply which was on the weekend, but again didn't receive a call back until Tuesday. Never heard from the doctor to see if we got things taken care of. I do understand that things can happen during any medical procedure, I am not faulting the dentist, but the lack of follow up and concern for his patient was disheartening. The worst part was dealing with a staff member named Kelly. I have never in my life been treated so poorly by a professional as I was by her. She actually hung up on me and REFUSED to bill my insurance claiming it was an insurance I couldn't bill. . The office again refused to bill the insurance after being contacted directly by the insurance company, claiming they had closed the encounter. What is still mind blowing to me is that I actually have two insurances that they could collect money from but refused for the pure fact Kelly couldn't admit she was wrong. Hope Dr. Hayhurst knows Kelly could potently be losing him money. read more

Both myself and then my wife ended up at this charlatans office on different occasions because it was close to our house and we needed to get in because of extreme tooth pain. They get you in all right but then look out. They will find every way to extract every last dime out of you and your insurance company doing everything at once while they have you "in the chair", pressuring you to do it RIGHT NOW. Both of us were in there for over 3 hours each at a time. This guy is obviously in it for the $$$, which I get, but not the way he is doing it. They will schedule you follow up appointments which if you cancel, schedule you for another day without your knowledge. Then when the unauthorized appointment approaches, remind you of the appointment and send you a terse email when you miss it. This happened more than once. When we found another dentist, they ignored our requests for our records to be sent, which we paid for, and have so far refused to provide us with an itemized account of what he did and what we paid for, some of which appears we paid for future work that has not been done. We don't really know because they won't provide us with the information. This guy is HORRIBLE and boarders on unethical. I am 60 years old have have been to dozens of dentists over the years so I feel I have a good and fair point of reference. The way he does this is if you have severe tooth pain, very few dentists in Boise can get you in immediately except for him. He capitalizes on this and gets you in the next day. Of course you are grateful at first because you are in pain. Then he lets you have it and the grinding begins, literally. I would pull my own tooth rather than going back to this guy. This is the worst dentist office I have ever been to! The people at the front desk are incredibly unorganized and unprofessional. Scott Hayhurst seems to be in it for the money and not much else. Day 1- I came to the office on the promotional offer I received in the mail. It was supposed to be a teeth cleaning, exam with x-rays, whitener trays and whitening gel for $99. Right off the bat, they say they are going to need an additional $170 to clean my teeth and that I would have to come back because they did not have time to do it that day. Then Dr Hayhurst says that I need about $3000 dollars worth of work done to my teeth. During the consultation with the manager, she asked me if I was told I would be charged 3x the amount that was offered on the promotion. After I explained my disappointment, she agreed to just charge me the original $99. I gave her my card, and she took the payment. Come to find out she actually charged my card the higher amount anyway. It took 2 days to get that resolved and the money put back into my account. Day-2- I came back in a couple days later, to have them finish cleaning my teeth. When I arrived there was another gentleman in the waiting room and no one at the front desk. Crickets. There was no one in the office at all for about 25 minutes. Then, all of the receptionist and dental hygienist walk in at the same time, after having a long lunch with the dentist because it was his birthday. Mostly, that was just annoying because they had scheduled appointments, and the entire office left for the event. So, this already put me 30 minutes behind schedule and wasted my time. Then, the hygienist spent about 15 minutes cleaning my teeth and I was done.?? Unfortunately, I had scheduled my boyfriend at the same time I scheduled myself. They did the exact same thing to him by trying to charge him more for teeth cleaning , telling him he needed a lot of work done to his teeth and not giving him the amount of whitener gel that was promised. Then, after paying his balance in full with cash and receiving a receipt showing a zero ballance, they send us a bill in the mail showing that we paid a dollar less than the full total and now owe $1.00!! Ridiculous! We had to fight for everything we should have received and the whole experience was a nightmare!! We both went to another dentist to have the cavities filled, of which doctor Hayhurst said we needed. I was told I had 2 cavities by Dr Hayhurst and my new dentist said I only had 1 and my boyfriend was told he had 3 cavities by dr. Hayhurst & again was confirmed by the new dentist that he only had 1 cavity! Additionally, the other work Hayhurst said I needed on my teeth was also false! Everything he wanted to do was cured with a total of $250 vs $3000. Finally, our new dentist had to do more cleaning on both our teeth, and we had just had them cleaned two weeks prior with Hayhurst! Dr. Hayhurst prefers to talk about sports and whenever I ask questions about pain in my teeth, he always says don't worry and cuts me short because he's always in a hurry to go to the next patient and makes me feel like my questions are not important. I cry each time I get shots in my jaw and feel no comfort from Dr. Hayhurst. I do appreciate his technician Courtney and finance manager Jan who seem to have more patience and understanding of my situation but am sad to find out Jan has now quit the office. The most frustrating part is dealing with tooth pain more than 7 months after my root canal when I was told not to worry and that it would go away. But now I am expected to have my root canal treated for another $1,300 through a referral by Dr. Hayhurst. It doesn't make sense to be told not to worry only to find out that some root canals fail. This is a scary experience, everyone deserves to know the risks and true prognosis of recovery! Also, Dr. Hayhurst needs to be more understanding of patients that can't afford to pay more than what their insurance covers every year. Patients will try to prioritize what can be taken care of according to their budget, pleas don't expect them to have it all done in one year, they are not made of money. read more
