A wonderful small ice cream place with rotating, imaginative flavors on one of the most hip streets in Highland Park! Now accepting credit cards! With one permanent flavor (brown bread - delicious and always a good choice, light vanilla flavor, small bread crumbles throughout) (that I know of), and the rest rotating, it's always a pleasure to drop in after dinner or just because. The ice cream is beautifully sticky (I love that first scoop with the little spoons and marveling at how the ice cream clings to it, so inviting!) and luxurious, lightly sweet, good amount of creaminess, not too "heavy". Our most recent visit, we ordered the "1 scoop" which includes two actual scoops / flavors; nice for a refreshment for two! We got the strawberry balsamic vinegar and the malted burnt sugar, a wonderful combination. The strawberry has the classic fruit flavor, and the balsamic flavor is just enough to give the fruit flavor a zingy punch! Malt burnt sugar has little globs of the burnt sugar ribbons throughout, has a nice deep caramel flavor. Vegan options available, sorbets too! I used to go to the original location near LACC over 8 years ago and loved the ice cream so much I followed to this location. It used to the BEST ice cream in town. I hadn't gone for over a year because it don't live close and was so disappointed! The ice cream was not creamy, like it used to be, but icy and grainy. The flavor of each ice cream was hard to detect and it all tasted the same. I'm not sure what happened, but I think the original owner probably sold it and it went to hell. The sake flavor was subtle and creamy, the green tea pb was very flavorful but had an icy texture. Flavor-wise, both were delicious! I hope in the future they offer more vegan flavors with creamier textures. However, I do appreciate that they use oat milk for the vegan ice cream! The shop itself is cute and clean and the staff is helpful and very kind. Ample street parking is available: meters, paid lots, and neighborhood. The shop is located right next to Vegan Friend, so grab a donut and slap on a delicious scoop from Scoops. THERE IS NO OUTDOOR SIGNAGE! I drove past it three times...it's right next door to Donut Friend (which DOES have a sign!). Parking was incredibly difficult on a Thursday night at 8:45 pm. Once inside, I surveyed the flavor choices, a few of which included: brown bread, pumpkin, green tea mint, almond saffron, butterscotch toffee & black currant clove. At any given time they have brown bread (always) plus seventeen other flavors. I thought it was amusing that they charge for excessive tasting. What dummy (dummies) caused this to become a necessity? If you'd like to try 6-11 tastes, it's gonna cost you $1.00. For 12-18 tastes, it'll set you back $2.00. There were so many interesting flavor combinations. I love artisan ice creams, sorbets and gelato. I chose black currant clove which was unique without being weird. It was super tasty and the kids' scoop for $2.50 was the perfect after dinner size. No exterior signs on storefront except address # and "open" sign, so you're looking for ITALIANO'S PIZZA at the corner of Avenue 51 & York Blvd. Scoops on York is a few doors down on the same side as Italiano's. Staff was friendly and taste spoonfuls were easy to ask for. We sampled a few of the 17 flavors available... MAPLE OREO: Enjoyed by the younglings. Good sized bits of Oreos mixed in. SALTY VANILLA: My lil one LOVES vanilla, but he gave the most entertaining yuck face I've seen in a while when he tried this! Even tried to wipe it off his tongue... So funny! None of my other young squires cared for it either. Mixed in were these salt crystals that gave little bursts of saltiness. I'm not into salt flavor so much, but if you like salty, this is for you. PISTACHIO LEMON: Unique flavor, more citrus-y than lemony, with a vanilla rather than pistachio flavor. There were tiny bits of pistachios mixed in. HAZELNUT PASSION FRUIT: Didn't get a sense of passion fruit taste, more vanilla, if anything. Did have tiny nut bits throughout. BROWN BREAD: Basically, vanilla flavor, but they top it with this crunchy crumb stuff that enhances the flavor, making it a pretty decent choice. I got one scoop of the brown bread which I hear is the one constant flavor. We came on a Sunday and they were opened although their signage inside says they are not open on Sunday's. Glad they were opened so I could have this very tasty treat! They only had a limited flavors only half of the counter had flavors to choose from. The Closed sign on the door was up and the worker tried to send us away. I figured they had closed early because of Memorial Day. Luckily, my best pouting puppy dog face was irresistible enough for him to let us in as long we closed the door behind us. Score! I had a sampling of the red velvet oreo, brown bread, malt burnt sugar, and maple oreo. My favorite was the red velvet oreo, but there wasn't enough to give me a whole scoop so I settled on the maple oreo and the malt burnt sugar. The flavours offered here are all one of a kind and very unique. None of your run-of-the-mill vanilla, chocolate, and strawberry, which is a nice change in my book. $2.90 for a "scoop" actually gets you 2 scoops, which allows you to try 2 different flavours for the price of one regular scoop elsewhere. Honestly, if I wasn't feeling so off that day, I would have considered a double scoop. Yes, they were that good. So instead of getting two scoops, I made the hubs get a scoop of the Strawberry Lychee so that I can get the Thai Iced Tea. The hubs isn't a fan of Thai iced tea, but even he tried to take a few bites out of my scoop. The key word being "tried".
