I've been going to SCI FIT for several years and the community there is part of the healing / motivation. Me: a quadriplegic medical doctor with experience as a client at several adaptive gyms across the country SCI-FIT Dublin benefits: a few nice toys/equipment (some acquired used such as the lokomat), able body trainers, 1 PT (recruited at a conference and joined this year) SCI-FIT Dublin drawbacks: forced greeting custom upon entering (ie, does not sound authentic), raucous noise (meant to be music) during sessions, college dropouts as trainers (if not, they fooled me), high turnover rate for trainers (seem to come and go faster than you run out of toilet paper with few exceptions), unsafe handling (generally lack the fund of knowledge to understand the impact of careless maneuvers on skin integrity), unhygienic practices (e.g., communal electrode pads with possible fecal contaminants from other clients can be and have been reused on clients with high risk of recurrent UTIs), unreliable communication (eg, weeks to months elapse before a "manager" possibly replies to an inquiry or request), decentralized leadership with diffusion of accountability (ie, "co-owners" lack accountability for inconsistent arrangements between clients) Analogy: other adaptive gyms are to SCI-FIT Dublin as Michelin restaurants are to a dirty Jack in the Box at the corner of the ghetto during inflation...you leave regretting overpaying for a stomachache Final thought: sadly, there is some degree of perceived exploitation when you have a for-profit business like SCI-FIT profit from a vulnerable population like the disabled community; furthermore, only real competitors in the East Bay will galvanize SCI-FIT Dublin to want to improve Suggestion: easier said than done, but if you can, invest in personal equipment and train an aspiring PT to work with you at your home read more

As a business that serves the disabled population, it's the staff that's "special!" As a former employee, their bullying has no end. Not only did they attempt to bully me, but than attempt to dismiss my Mental Health for the needs of their business, and purposely sent my tax info on the last day! All of this started because of their horrible training & business acumen, and their lying on record to target me for their negligence for a member who was injured. They favor people who accept the abuse and think of it as the norm. The fake and despicable acts of the leadership team makes me question what will happen in the future if they continue to put themselves first? Protect your love ones by hiring people who don't accept responsibility for their actions. read more

Pros: They offer a few pieces of specialized equipment. Cons: Dublin location has a high volume, and frequencies, of trainees. They charge full price when trainees work with clients, quality of service is inconsistent, dimly lit/dark interior, and staff think that they know everything. Service is not personalized, they do random exercises with no specific goals to be met. I understand being professional but the staff has a palpable power distance between them and clients and it truthfully feels like they have a disinterest in their clients. It seems like they give the higher functioning clients the worst trainers and the best trainers, which isn't fair. Trainers act like a bunch of kids, they only play the music that they want to listen to, and the entire experience feels egocentric on their end and much less customer centric. Feels like a somewhat toxic environment and I would advise going elsewhere else. They are a for profit organization as well and it feels that way as they visibly put their clients needs last and their interest first. BEWARE!!!!! read more

Over the past year and a half I've gone through extraordinary medical problems where I slowly lost my mobility over the course of ten months. Luckily, I got diagnosed, super rare meningitis (1 of 4 in the entire world rare)and treated. As you can imagine, I was devastated and felt defeated both mentally and physically. You don't know how horrible the healthcare system is in this country until you forced to experience it. That being said finding a physical therapist that actually pushes you and doesn't just send you home with some exercise pamphlets is obsolete. This is where Sci-fit comes into the picture. This little gem of a place has the most motivating, inspiring and knowledgeable staff. Each and every week I can't wait for my workout because they make me do things I never thought was possible being in a wheelchair. The trainers always have new and inventive ideas so my workouts are never the same. I have been going to mediocre physical therapy for a year now and it doesn't even compare to the workout I get at Sci-Fit. Since I started Sci-Fit a couple months ago I've had a good amount of function in my legs come back. I can't wait to see where I'm at a year from now. Only downside for me personally is the distance from my house but when it comes to the possibility of getting my mobility back there isn't a distance I wouldn't go. Hats off to Jerry, Dan and Annabelle. Ya'll have provided me the opportunity to get back to being mobile and for that I have so much gratitude! read more

I've been a client for over three years, and I have to say it is the best physical therapy I've ever experienced since my injury 33 years ago. They work with you one-on-one, and design your workout just for you. They use advanced methods and the best equipment available. They get you up on your feet again standing and walking. They target what muscles are working, and FES the ones that need it. I just wish it was closer to my house, then I'd be there three times a week! read more

I suffered a fall on ice in January of this year. I had 3-skull fractures, frontal brain swelling and spinal cord swelling. I am a Kaiser patient. I am also an MD-Pediatrician and usually work full time. My injuries were not "complete". Sci Fit believes that if you have residual muscle strength that they will build your muscles to be as strong as possible, making you an independent person once again. All therapists, men and women both, follow the same plan for each individual patient. I have been attending 1+ hour sessions 2-3 times per week and have seen amazing improvement in strength and moving about. My hope is to trade in my wheel-chair for a walker as soon as possible. I highly recommend this program/gym to anyone who is in a rehabilitation program due to CNS (central nervour system) injury or disease. I have the most amazing experience with these guys. I spent years looking for a physical therapist for my premature fibromyalgia management. All I found was hospital PT giving me stretches on paper and sending me on my way or people saying they only do "rehabbing injury" PT. This has helped my balance problems and made me feel stronger and more confident. I no longer feel self conscious in regular fitness classes and I way more comfortable and mobile. Wheelchair-bound since a spinal cord injury (SCI) following surgery left me paraplegic 5+ years ago. I've been going to Sci-Fit for about 2 years and it is wonderful for me. The ambiance and atmosphere are very upbeat, welcoming and energetic. The trainers/therapists are friendly and well trained and understand the issues related to paralysis resulting from SCI or other issues. They have many different types of equipment that enable me to have a thorough workout that is individually tailored to my needs and abilities. I am over age 65, and don't feel self conscious at all about it, as there are clients and members of all ages and abilities/disabilities. I always enjoy my time there and only wish it was a little closer to my home. That said, I'm grateful for Sci-Fit. read more

It's my "Fun Day Friday!" In a wheelchair because of MS, I get a great workout personalized for my abilities/disabilities while enjoying the fun atmosphere created by trainers and clients with a range of spinal cord injuries and neurological challenges. They have a variety of specialized equipment that I've never seen in a typical physical therapy facility. I highly recommend visiting the facility and seeing it for yourself. read more

Sci-Fit extra-ordinare! In my 3 years under the spell of this "accidental" illusion, I never worked out any better! No One pushes me as much as the Sci-Fit Body Ticklers, Guards, Motivators, Comedians, Movers, and Trainers DO! I have been working out since late July 2011, and it's a blast! Yes, it hurts!! But come on! If you have been frozen for a long time, who doesn't want to ache because of a stellar workout? I am rushing to say so, now September 2, 2011, but I just can't dismiss the fact that after almost every 2 hour session so far, I feel so tired, I cannot keep my eyes open. I've never needed to sleep more after any workout in the past! Led in person by the main man, Jerry Rainey, who has in conjunction with Dan, a wonderfully recovered quad, picked a wonderful group of willing and giving, helping hands, impresses me. In fact, I'm planning on asking everyone why they chose to give their bodies and souls this task. These energetic and young adults, very fit themselves, lift people with spinal cord injuries AND other conditions quite often during one hour! Usually, two trainers grab the person from underneath the knees and arm pits, and transport them to the exercise next on the list. This saves a lot of time! Personally, I have been carefully twisted on my stomach, lifted, made to baby walk, slowly lowered, and had a lot of body to body contact. Why? Because I need it. I am described as a quad, so I have a level of paralysis in my hands which they mold around. I always feel comfortable. For protection, and my need to workout with my hands, the trainers wrap tedious, grasping, leather braces on my hands every time I may need them. When they slide off, they adjust them. The patience I see gives me hope. SCI is a patience and endurance game...and this sort of patience comes in multiple levels of difficulty for the person affected and the multiple people involved in our lives. I am really happy the trainers rotate themselves from person to person. Each hour is accompanied by a different trainer. So, today I may work with Kayla and Mike, and the following day, with Jerry and Brett. I also admire their versatility, if approached with friendliness they do not shy away from joking about and sharing what they did during the weekend. I love to laugh! And I am all laughed out by the time I say "See you next time!" You have to participate though :) I want to mention of course the incredible ways of different exercises that happen at Sci-Fit. They put 24hr Gym to shame...! Creativity IS needed to come up with ways to facilitate workouts for paralyzed folks, and it's not missing here. Strapping to machines, hoisting up for gait training, and ski boot huggers attached to a gliding machine are just a few examples. I want to give you a glimpse of Sci-Fit because it has touched me, and I want to encourage you to at least give it a shot. I am buffer than ever, well, since I've been paralyzed and muscles have atrophied. If you think and feel you will walk, don't give up. Rehab is the perfect medicine, better than Baclofen. If movement doesn't return, but you try, it'sgreat because it still keeps you in shape. Results may just not happen, but through time, I'm sure they happen. I love all and everyone I meet and met at Sci-Fit! We're folks that have been given a chance to live, and not necessarily a chance to recover, but times and things are definitely moving and changing. Sci-Fit! Thank you for the awesome workout this week! I'll exhaust myself every time I'm in, after all, it's one of the safest spots on earth, and most happening for a living with SCI brave heart. SCI-FIT is an absolutely amazing place. In February of 2010, I suffered a serious spinal injury while riding motocross. The injury left me partially paralyzed from the waist down. As you can imagine the injury devastated me and left me lost. Having been an athlete and a lover of exercise, my wife and I began looking for a place I could do my rehabilitation, but also push myself physically to get a good workout. It didn't take long for me to fall in love with SCI-FIT. The staff is incredibly knowledgeable, as well as professional. Jerry Rainey is the head trainer and designer of creative and challenging workouts. Brett, Jose, Mike and Chris are also wonderful trainers. Having trained at SCI-FIT for six months, I feel like I owe the owners (Dan and Annebelle), as well as the trainers, a huge debt of gratitude. SCI not only helped me recover physically, but also (and probably more importantly) mentally. I would recommend SCI-FIT to anyone with a spinal cord injury, and even above that, I would personally talk to anyone who reads this and has questions (Chris at 650-823-4211).
