Parlour's sister bar, this is the place to be for an affordable craft cocktail experience. Having been open now for only a year, Schody is still evolving (chat with the bartender/owner and he'll explain why) and is for people who come to Prague having done their research. So unknown it's not on Yelp yet (do any of us fully trust TA reviews?). So unknown the bartender asked me how I knew to come. Honestly if I had known the treat I was in for, I would have come here 3/3 nights of my short stay in Prague - oh yes, it's that good. This bar embodies everything I'm looking for when I travel - a non-touristy, quality, and personal experience I would not be able to replicate at home in NY. Sadly a place like this in NY would drown in its popularity. Even now I hesitate to write this review because I want to help keep the place's profile down, but Schody really belongs on your list of must-visits. Great for a day you're ending near the castle, possibly after dinner at Kuchyn.
Schody is halfway up (or down) a set of stairs to the Prague Castle and can be easy to miss. Look for the pink building next to a perfume store that's blasting music. The bar has a window where passersby can order a coffee or a lemonade. A gin and tonic to go is only 95czk and it's made with Tanqueray gin and Fever Tree tonic. I only watched the bartender make about 50 of these. Ask for a pillow to sit outside on the steps and enjoy your drink and the sunset. This is the tourist element and if you ask, the bartender will explain that this is how the bar sustains itself.
If you venture inside through the door to the left of the window, you'll have an experience unlike any other. There are only 10 seats inside but I was the only patron there on a Saturday night for a couple hours until close. The bartender said that on an average day 0-2 "explorers" will really come in for what Schody is. That's when he'll ask you what you're feeling and then customize your drink based on your response. He'll walk you through what he made and offer you tastings of things you don't understand or have never had before, like Czech Becherovka, Slivovica, or absinthe. Don't worry, they only keep the good stuff here. When he's not busy servicing the tourists at the window, he'll chat with you. Ask him anything. Schody is refined but unpretentious. You'll start to feel at home after a couple drinks. Oh, and the drinks just keep getting better. read more
