Really nice Biergarten in a great location not too far from the S-bahn in the Tiergarten. The weather was a bit shite when I was there so unfortunately the bbq wasn't up and running but I still enjoyed my pilsner and a pretzel. Prices for beer are cheap and they have a nice food menu outside of the bbq options but I didn't try anything as I was heading to lunch after. The personnel were nice and spoke English fluently. I didn't feel like I was judged at all for not speaking German. The vibes even on a rainy day were nice and most of the tables were filled. I can only imagine how wonderful this place would have been had it been sunny! read more

This is a really cool beer garden in a great location. We'd been exploring central Berlin on foot and ended up at the Western end of the Tiergarten when it was time for lunch. Lonely Planet recommended this spot and they did not lead us astray. The outdoor garden area is great in the summer and the view of the locks is neat. We had an excellent salad and an order of weisswurst with a pretzel. If I find myself in Berlin again I'd happily comeback here. read more

Great spot for a large group gathering on a perfect fall Sunday! My running team made a 16:00 reservation here for about 20 people and we had no issues claiming our spot. I also had the best curry wurst of my entire trip here - perfectly saucy and excellent taste! The side of potatoes it was served with were also expertly roasted. Any curry wurst I had after this experience sadly could not compare. It paired awesomely with a wheat beer. My friend who had just raced was looking for a large pretzel which oddly they didn't have, perhaps just that particular day? I'm about 65% sure that this translates to: "The grill is open." If so, then it confirms my otherwise un-supported theory that the real German language is virtually identical to an ignorant American speaking English in a bad German accent. I just wanted to throw that out there. ____________ So Schleusenkrug is the beer garden in Tiergarten. In addition to rhyming, this makes it a perfect place to grab a shockingly huge meal when you're taking a break from the zoo, the park, and everything else going on inside the park. It also happens to be where Fat Tire Bike Tours stop for a mid-tour break. It's the beer garden I see in my dreams. Huge communal tables, lights strung all around, garlic hanging from the rafters, ivy growing along the columns...it's a beautiful sight for a beer lover. Sunshine and beer just can't be bad. In terms of food, you have two options: 1. The grill that serves sausages, German potato salad, cucumbers, kraut and more. 2. The more formal counter where you order beer, as well as plates of schnitzel, pasta, pizza and more. Shockingly enough, I found the brats and merguez from the grill to be a bit dry, although the sides it was served with were fantastically filling. And even stranger, the PIZZA was the real star. It's very thin crust, and so damn tasty. I would've gone with the bacon pie, but her pie with goat cheese, plum tomatoes, onions and more was incredibly satisfying all the same. If I were you, I'd get yourself some beer, split a pie between two people, and weep because this place is half a world away from your house. read more

Schleusenkurg is one of the Biergarten inside the Tiergarten. It's very close to the river side. that made it a very nice place to just sit down and have yourself a relaxing day. This place is completely self-service. Which is great in some way. For example, no need to waste time to wait for someone to come over. All you need to do just to find a nice table and occupie it. You can make your order at the entrance. Just remember have some cash with you. It easier and faster to get the drinks. They also offer some German dishes and cakes. I was here with my study colleagues for drinks. It was very lovely day. Blue sky and sun shine, the trains passed by many time, just next to us, it was quite cool, and the atmosphere was quite nice as well. Most of the seats are outdoor. There are some also on the boat. Drinks here were ok. The drinks was nothing special, at least I haven't seen anything special on the menu. Somehow it's still manage to be one of the popular place for locals. I do have some ideas why through. Didn't really try the food, but they looked nice. Beside the beautiful Tiergarten, it also fairly close to the Zoo, Zoo Palast, also some shopping centers around and S-/U-bahnhof Zoologischer Garten. I find this place very easy to get around. You can enjoy the beauty and the peaceful of the nature in one hand, another hand the city side just close by. When you got a suddenly feeling, want to shop something, just go for it. read more

I got lost wandering through the Tiergarten attempting to find my way to my hostel near the zoo. I stopped along a bridge to take a few photos and found this building with paintings hanging on the outside. Yes. Paintings. Outside instead of on the walls indoors. As I turned the corner, not only were the paintings accompanied by beautiful chandeliers, also hanging on the outside) but I discovered this eccentric building is also a delicious cafe. Seeing as I had gone four hours without eating or drinking (navigating large parks has never been my strong suit) I was determined to have a milchkaffe. They were out of most pastries and being my first day in Berlin, I had no idea what I was looking at on the menu. The gentleman behind the counter recognized my struggle and suggested I try one of their cakes. Cake falls somewhere in the food pyramid. So yes. I will have my cake and eat it too! Holy. Smokes. Un. Real. Just in my first bite I died and went to heaven. And then I photographed the desert because I finally discovered what heaven tastes like. It's a raspberry gelatin fluffy white cake with a tall milchkaffe I tell you. I've posted the photo so you can see what I'm talking about. And yes. It looks as good as it tastes. I ended up playing sailor on the children's boat they've provided around the back. Because I'm an adult. And even adults want to be captain on the USS Awesomesauce. I also sat at the water's edge and watched the river rise and fall to let vessels through. All the while drinking my milchkaffe through a bed straw. Again. Because I am a fully capable adult. Should I admit I ate here six more times fmduring my four day adventure in Berlin? I don't know if it's the awesome patio, the delicious deserts, or the quirky decor, but this place stole my heart. If you've finished for the day at the zoo or have also spent four hours trying to find your way through the Tiergarten, add this place to your list of must eats. You won't be disappointed! read more

We went here on Sunday lunch time in April - the weather was chilly so not many people around. The setting is lovely and I can imagine it gets very busy in summer. We were here during summer and had a splendid view on the Landwehrkanal while sipping our cold beer. On a nice hot day, there is nothing quite like hanging out at a beergarden and just enjoying a beer and good company. There are plenty of beergardens to choose from, but I especially like the Schleusenkrug near the Zoo. It's a popular place, so it can get crowded, but you should still be able to find a spot at one of the many tables. Don't be afraid to sit near strangers. In fact, do and make conversation. The Schleusenkrug has such a nice family-like atmosphere. It's also really kid-friendly. Besides haivng a drink and some food, you can also play boules. They also have a set for kids and there is a large chalkboard as well as a boat for kids to play in. The Schleusenkrug offers several beers on tap as well as in bottles, but also non-alcoholic drinks. A beer will cost you EUR3.50 and a Coke EUR2.50. Fair prices. You have to order your drinks and take them to the table yourself, so don't sit down and expect to be waited on. The Schleusenkrug also offers several things to eat. They have your typical pretzel, but also sausages, steaks and more from the grill. They also have a few yummy dishes. German cuisine. Just perfect along with a nice Erdinger Weißbier. To get to the beer garden I had a lovely walk along the perimeter of the zoo and could peer in to see camels, goats, and ox. Then before crossing the footbridge is this beer garden which was packed with people even though there were multiple levels of seats. Self-service seating and order food and drinks at the counter. Really cool environment where you can enjoy a huge jug of beer and eat delicious foods. The place breaks down into two restaurants -- one that has more entrees and the other different sausages and quick eats. Came here for a bike tour and had the allgauer buble beer (recommended), the meatballs and potatoes wedges, and the german pasta. The meatballs were delicious and covered in the berlin favorite curry sauce and came with perfectly grilled potato wedges, a side of salad, and coleslaw. The German pasta was like a light white cheese mac and cheese with pasta that looked like longer macaroni. Didn't love this but was a good try. We came by here after a trip to the zoo. When it's gets packed, it gets filled with smoke as the umbrellas and bushes keep it trapped in each section. Luckily, there are tons of seats everywhere and although we moved seats four times, we eventually found an area where people weren't smoking as much. The big space right along the water is great for a group get together with some nice German brews. There's something special about sitting with a German brew out in the sun on a nice weekend day. Came here with our bike tour. Nice outside seating, even in the rain. We had the shrimp pasta and lentil soup with sausages...omg that soup was the best I've ever had!! So fresh and delicious. Highly recommend it! The service was slow and kinda got the orders mixed up but we were a large group and they were very busy so it's understandable and they were very nice about it. So glad I managed to visit a super cool beer garden before leaving Berlin! I came here with Fat Tire Tours, and they didn't disappoint in taking us to an awesome place to get dinner. You order at either counter (set dishes in one line and barbeque/grilled items downstairs), and I had the schnitzel (fried breaded pork chop... it's okay if you didn't know what schnitzel was before this trip... I didn't, haha) served over a bed of potatoes, with delicious cranberry and horseradish sauces and side salad on the side. It was really good, although a bit pricier than what you could find at other restaurants. But given the perfect weather and down-to-earth atmosphere, I think it was pretty worth it. I also had the "erdinger urweisse hefe" beer, which I really recommend - especially if you normally don't like beer (aka me). It's a wheat beer, really light and refreshing, and a slight fruity/floral flavor. (I apologize for my less-than-impressive description of beer.) My table didn't have to wait too long for our food, though the table (also part of the bike tour) had to wait an hour for their order due to a mix up, so the minimal service can be hit and miss, especially when they're busy. Overall, a great place to go with a group of friends or even meet people (sharing tables) and enjoy some yummy German food and beer! FYI: You do have to pay to use their outdoor bathrooms. The main merit of Schleusenkrug is to be one of two beergardens in Tiergarten. So you would look for atmosphere and beers, under the shade of trees, close to the water. Schleusenkrug feels unneccessarily cramped with the nearest hedge, wall or other obstacle never being too far from you. There are a handful of tables close to the water, but those are few, usually taken, and really only the row directly adjacent to the water has anything resembling a view. I definitely prefer Cafe am Neuen See - the other Tiergarten beergarden - with more space, water, trees, and what felt like a less uptight crowd. read more
