A combination brewery and food fair space. The space is divided into two sectors not unlike West and East Berlin Except that both halves are nice. One half has one of the most famous biergartens in the city. The other half hosts some sort of street food fair every weekend with a large changing array of food carts. We went for the African Food Festival. You only get BRLO beer if you go to the biergarten side. On the food fair side, you get a fixed drink vendor who sells a small selection of soft drinks and bottled beers. (But hey, don't knock German bottled beer.) * * * The location is 1/3 nice 2/3 not so nice. The biergarten is right near an enormous urban park. It is a more of a flat sports space than a dramatic forest, garden or lakeside. Berlin has lots of parks with the last three. But hey, flat parks are nice too. Over the whole lot runs one of the largest subways in the system. Nearby are all sorts of highways. So this is not the most sylvan tranquil location you can find for drinking beer outside. Either you really like BRLO beer, or you like the food carts at your particular food festival. * * * When we were there, the African Food Festival was not the greatest. The SHOPPING was fantastic. There was all sorts of colorful African wear to buy. I bought a spectacular bag from a Kenyan stand. The food was unfortunately on the meh side ... We tried food from multiple different vendors Including vendors for which there were long lines. Somehow the thrills were never there. I imagine if you go on a day with really good food trucks, Your experience will be different than ours. Rumor also has it - although I can not substantiate this That BRLO's own food on their side of the wall is pretty good. * * * I could be talked into going back and trying BRLO's own domestic side. But there are many spectacular biergartens in Berlin And many are known for their food as well as their beer. I imagine BRLO is a great thing if you live in the neighborhood. BRLO is a cool beer garden to visit while in Berlin. There is an indoor dining area, but we stuck to the outdoor seating to have some drinks and snacks. You have the option to order via an app, but we decided to wait on the line because it moved quickly. Unfortunately, they did not have their gluten-free beer available, and the ciders were only bottled, it would have been cool if they had at least one cider on tap. Their classic apple cider was delicious and one of the best I've had. There are tons of seats outside, so we had no issue finding a spot to relax and enjoy our drinks. We also ordered pickles and popcorn, both of which were yummy. From hops to cider, you're sure to enjoy visiting this spot. read more

Easily one of my highlights during my recent trip to Berlin! Decided to hit this place for lunch during the week, the main dining room doesnt open until the evening. However, not disappointed at all! Still had a lot on the lunch menu, the chickpea salad, mac and cheese, and ribs were OFF THE CHARTS. The ribs were a huge favorite among my taste buds and those of my companions. The beer was exceptional indeed. The bartender in the outdoor sectional was very knowledgeable and great to talk to. Overall, the experience was perfect. Despite it's almost 'destination location' very popular, large brewpub, that is more than able to cater to any size of group. The brewery's craft beers have earned their good reputation and are the main draw. 10+ beers on tap. On the food side, however, I find them out of their depths. They offer elaborately sounding dishes with fermented garlic and a lot of variety containing cauliflower, but often taste and texture is just undefined. Maybe it's a food concept that doesn't translate to a busy group-friendly kitchen handing dishing out beers by the second. BRLO Brwhouse have a lot going for them but not the dinner menu. By far the most confusing set-up I have ever seen. 10 people ordering dinner became silent resignation and we ended up letting the waiter decide what we should have for dinner. And it was quite pricey as well. The food itself tasted good but the portions were small and many and it ended up being a buffet like situation where you mix and match and in this case miss. Too many different tastes interact making a lot of flavours overpower each other. Small portions also became a problem since several in our party wanted to try the same dishes and we soon ran out. The presentation of each dish is an impressive display but I felt like the presentation took centre stage over portion size and choice. All in all a bit too pretentious for my taste. Beerwise they are well set and they have an extensive selection of great craft beer. The venue is a bit noisy and that together with the clumsy food set-up I can only give three stars. read more

We lucked out to visit Berlin on what was apparently one of the only sunny weekends of the summer. Four of us went to BRLO on a Sunday afternoon after brunch to grab some drinks and hang out. Very different vibe to other beer gardens we've visited in Berlin-- it's a container building (like London's Boxparks) with a huge back deck with tons of tables. Worth noting that there were different drinks offered at the window outside and inside, so if you're looking for something specific, check both. Like many places in Berlin, all sorts of people were out, from families with small kids to total hipsters posing for selfies to older couples (I'm talking 70s-80s), it feels like nobody is being judged by their style. Decent snacks, smallish portions for the price though. Beers we tried were good, it was nice they had a real variety of flavours, including sour options (in a bottle) and some dry cider-styles on tap. My biggest complaint is that there wasn't an option for shade (and presumably that means no shelter from rain in other weather), so you have to hope the weather is perfect if you want to sit outside. There are a lot of seats inside, but it doesn't have the same atmosphere. read more

This was the only brewery in Berlin that we went to that offered a beer flight. There may have been others but this was the only place that posted it in bold. For €9.50 you get 5 pours of their core brews. If you want to mix in some samplings of their guest taps, the price goes up. Since it's built into several stacked shipping containers, the layout is very open. Don't expect to find any charging outlets except near the front door. They do have a nice outdoor beer garden should the weather cooperate. Service was a bit iffy. Especially if you're not ordering food. We loved that concept of the vegetable based menu where you actually are required to pay more if you want to add meat. What a novel concept! Unfortunately it's not exactly plant based as everything contained dairy or eggs. Instead we opted to stick to beer. All their beers were decent but pretty much what you might expect out of craft beer. Nothing mind blowing going on. Their Porter was my favorite out of the bunch. read more

I was drawn in by the craft beer and the veggie-centric menu, but I was sorely disappointed. The biggest offense was the service; we ordered a flight of beer, and as soon as it came out we asked if it would have been possible to do the food or cheese pairing, which we hadn't realized was available until after we'd put in our order. The answer: "I don't even think they'd do that for you at this point, they're so busy and they're focusing on making people's dinner orders." Too busy to put 5 slices of cheese on a plate? But apparently they were, because we then proceeded to wait precisely 1 hour four our food to come. During that time, we saw our waitress a grand total of zero times. The food was disappointing. Their shtick is that you get one vegetable "main," one vegetable "side," and one vegetable "snack" for 18 euros. I got the broccoli dish as my main, the wilted spinach as my side, and the German "kimchi" as my snack. The broccoli was really broccolini, which came with a nice sauce, some pickled radish, and goat cheese, and was tasty, but tiny. The wilted spinach was literally a bowl of slightly warm spinach with an underwhelming vinaigrette and some fried onions. The German "kimchi" was...wait for it...sauerkraut. Now, I'm a veggie enthusiast, but if you're going to charge me 18 euros, those veggies had better be bomb. My bf is a meat eater, so he went for one of their meat options, which were all reminiscent of American Southern BBQ. His ribs were fine. They charged him a couple euros for sauce, which was a little unbelievable. I guess they're a standout in Berlin, with their craft beer, creative veggie-centric menu, and American smokehouse-type meats, which MAYBE explains their place on Eater's "Essential 38" list. Super cool place! The beer is really good, as well as the food. I decided to start with the Pale Ale, which was super tasty and fresh, but moved to the Pilsner afterwards. Since some of my friends chose the tasting board, I had the chance to try the rest, and though the IPA is also really good, Im a classic and prefer Pale Ale or Pilsner. I ordered the Chef Sandwich after a couple beers, and though it was a bit chillier than expected, it was delicious! The staff is super friendly, the bartender that took our other even spoke a bit of Spanish with my friends, so nice. Will definitely come back, especially when the weather gets better so the Biergarten will be open! read more

Do not make a Reservation, do not order from the set menu. The menu is super confusing. Just go there, get the beer, and order the ribs from the grill. I ordered #3 from the set menu, which sounds like it could be a unique combination of yummy fruits and veggies, somehow only has one strong taste of a pile of freshly cut grass in the sun. The waiter was awkward but took the price of #3 off our bill even though I was fine with still paying for what we ordered. He appreciated the feedback and commented that we can improve better with honest feedback. Great beer, great ribs, great location and vibe, everything else at your own risk. read more

I found this place by a random google search! It was so amazing. I would recommend it to anyone is into gastropubs or the brewery scene in America. My husband and I spent 4 hours here enjoying beer and the outstanding food selection. I don't think it's possible to order anything you won't enjoy. It was the best food and drinks we had and not to mention the over all experience. The staff was so amazing and everyone spoke English which made it easy. Hands down AMAZING!!!! read more

The beer flight was great. We got three of their main beers, and two seasonal ones, and the price was much better than in the States for a flight of that size. The mac and cheese was great too! Elbow noodles with parmesan and cheddar, and fried onion crumbles. Amazing price as well, only around 4.5 Euros. The atmosphere is very American, very Californian, and looks much like the microbreweries you find in Southern California everywhere. I was feeling a bit homesick and this place did the trick. I was relaxing and enjoying the place, and didnt even realize it was almost 10pm and the sun was just setting. Its a great summer location, with the beer garden outside, and restaurant inside. If you are American, or don't speak much German, the waiters and waitresses were extremely helpful. Just be careful of the younger crowd there, lots of families, and lots of fresh-16 year olds. read more

I thought this was such an interesting restaurant: brews and vegetables are the main focuses. In addition to the many beers they have here, the menu emphasizes vegetarian fare. They also have a few meat options where you order by weight and sandwiches. I ordered the "S" combo, which came with my choices of entree and two sides. The cauliflower entree is so good, but very filling. I was also able to try the creamed spinach and baked leeks. The creamed spinach wasn't what I was used to (less creamy) and the baked leeks were decent. My friend ordered the risotto and I liked it, though it's definitely made with a different grain (perhaps barley?). I often get tired of typical pub foods that come with many breweries so this was a nice change! read more

I had been looking forward to this brewery opening for quite a long time. I am a fan of many of their beers and appreciate the craft that goes into making each and every one of them. That's why it hurts to only be able to give two stars, when I really did want to give more. The building is in a great location, directly next to Gleisdreick park in Kreuzberg. It's easy to get to, and centrally located. The building itself is also really cool, as it's made from old shipping containers stacked on one another. The interior has a very industrial design and is spread into two floors. The beer, of course, was very good. We tried many different kinds, with the help of the 5-glass tasting plate. For 8€ we felt that was a good problem. The main problem, and the reason for the two star review, is the food. The entrees cost 15€ for one person, or 40€ for three. We tried a couple of different 15€ plates and were highly disappointed by them all. The German kimchi is very strong but doesn't taste like kimchi, the veggie plate was bland, and the potatoes were...fine. We expected more for 15€, much more. Why aren't there more classic brewery-type snacks? Why not something as simple as fries? I appreciate the ambition of the chef to attempt something higher-end, but I would guess that most visitors come for the beer, and are looking for easy and comfortable pairings rather than high-end dishes that disappoint. I was also disappointed that there weren't more alcohol-free beers. We came with a new mother and one who's expecting, and I hoped that a brewery would make an effort to provide more than just a single non-alcoholic Weiss beer. My local pizzeria down the street offers two sorts, but one of the best breweries in Berlin has just one? Not very impressive. read more

We had the smoked cauliflower, pumpkin and spinach and two meat options, the smokers tripping and the smoked ribs, as you can see a strong focus on bbq. If you were expecting a brewery style restaurant; do not go here. They try very hard to be a fancy restaurant that serves a wide variety of beers, yet they fail to reach that level by far. The food is ok and fairly decent arranged in terms of presentation for a restaurant aspiring to serve fine dining. Yet, it lacks in overall quality and originality to truly be considered fine dining. The menus are overpriced and you will leave with a sense of being robbed. Everything feels like the ill attempt of a 40-year-old to fit into an instagram culture. You can put lipstick on a pig but it will not distract the patron from the desperate attempt of the owners to fill a niche that no one asked for. If you want a good beer garden or brewery experience, look further and do not pay Brlo a visit. read more

Brlo has been around for quite a while now. And if you're a fan of crafted beers, you'll be pretty happy here. Quite a variety for any taste and some of them are really good. Even alcohol free beer is served, if you want to drive. There's been enough written and said about the place, its atmosphere and the beer. Two things that I have to blame, as well as many others, the food is mediocre. For this price range you get like standard bar food that lacks of originality. I'm a happy eater if I drink a good beer and here's something where Brlo has to improve. What I also do not understand is, Brlo offers ice cream through a Rosa Canina franchise in the garden. I guess they would have done a large favor to the neighborhood offering the spot to the great ice cream place on Flottwellstr. which is a bit hidden and has walk-in customers driven to Brlo now. Our AirBnB was pretty much right across from the park where BRLO is located, so we passed it many a time on our way to the metro, and we stopped in a couple times as well. I really like the industrial feel and look of the brewhouse itself (it is comprised of 38 shipping containers), as it fits in perfectly with the austere setup of the park, as well as the old-school bridge the U1 runs on behind it. The main entrance is on the side closer to the metro entrance, and once there, you can sit in the main dining area on the ground level, with a small bar-only seating to the right. There's also a small area near the bathrooms on the second level that overlooks the ground level, which I can imagine provides for a nice view as well. We didn't get a chance to eat here, as we only came to grab beers to take away, and to pre-game on New Year's Eve at the bar area. From what I can tell, there's a decent amount of American expat interest (virtually everyone that night at the bar was speaking American-accented English), and it's not surprising given that American craft brewing probably outpaces most of the world. The brewhouse has approximately 25-30 beers on tap, by my recollection, with about 5-7 in-house choices, followed by mostly other local craft beers (although they somehow had barrel-aged Arrogant Bastard, something I cannot find easily in NYC). Of the house beers, I would say I liked their West Coast-style IPA (styled 'C4PO') the best - a very smooth, crisp drink with a good balance of bitterness and hoppiness without going overboard. Their German IPA was also pretty solid, although there's not really much hoppiness in it and drank very similarly to a doppelbock. One of the local beers we tried was quite flat - we got the bottom of the keg, so perhaps that explained it. The Arrogant Bastard was sublime, though, and was the best beer I had by far. It was also the highest-ABV beer at 7.9%; most of the selection was on the lighter side, making it not the most natural place for my tastes (which can tend towards the heavier, hoppier, higher-ABV side of beer). In all, I enjoyed the ambiance, and the beer selection beat the pants off of anywhere else we went to in Berlin (and definitively was way ahead of the 'beer' we got at a convenience store). It isn't going to be world-beating brews compared to other places I have been, but a few of the in-house beers are good, and the variety is wide enough (if not the heaviest enough, IMO) to make it interesting. Whether it is ordering by the glass, a flight, or even taking away a 6-pack of their beer to go (IMO, they should add growlers), there's an easy way to make sure you aren't left high and dry. read more

Accidentally found this place on a Google search for new Berlin dinner options, as I tend to return to my same favorite places when I return to Berlin. Found the place aesthetically appealing (simple lines of wood, metal and concrete) and the food outstanding. Good and timely service. I enjoy a plant forward restaurant and BRLO did not disappoint (did not partake of the Biergarten). Sampled a variety of BRLO beers (Weizen, German IPA and Helles) and found them all very satisfying, as well as being served very cold. Price point cheaper than my hometown of Chicago for comparable fare. My only complaint, the size of food portions. Maybe BRLO gave in to the whining of all the prior Americans' reviews about portions, but I couldn't finish my food because the portions were so huge. Highly recommend. read more

I like this place. I'm not in love with the food. I best say this upfront as it's truly one of the only downfalls of this brewery. And charging for non-bottled water is a bit disappointing. (Hence the 3 stars) The kraft beer is good, and as their brewing experience grows it will only get better. I'm onboard with the setting, the overall concept and staff is for the most part super friendly! No german needed here and everyone seems to have a fairly descent knowledge of beer ! ;-) I know this sounds dumb, but I'm amazing with how many brewery servers don't know much about their own micro brews! So I guess time will tell where they go. In any case I'm looking forward to making this my go to brewery! read more

Saturday, mid afternoon. Had the tasting board, with food (vs cheese) pairing. Brlo put together (vs self-selected), 5 of their own brews. The winner for amazing combo: Helles und kleines Stück Toast mit Champignons. Had no idea that would work and was convinced. The Porter was dreamily porterish, kinda reminded me of chocolate covered espresso beans. Mein Lieblingsbier ist handsdown das Pale Ale und das finde ich schwer zu sagen, als ein West Coast IPA gal. Das stimmt wirklich mit den Maracuja, Grapefruit und Orangen-tönen. Just dead on! Took a 6-pack (at 12Euro...) with me. Have to agree with the general lackadaisical-ness of the service - no reason one is too hip to pay attention to a customer. Und ich schlage vor, alle Servierleute können gut-genug Deutsch. English seemed to be the predominant language, while easy for me, I think it's unfortunate in this setting. PS: the 'food' that was paired with the taster is about 4 mouthfuls. This is one of the best places I have been to in Berlin. If you love great craft beer paired with great food this is it. I love to cook and I think you can tell the difference if food is conscious or unconscious, this food is made with love and attention to presentation. The three portions to choose from was also great. Mathias was knowledgeable about the beers and even hung out while I asked my weird amateur beer questions. We had one experience the couple of times we've been here when a staff member had zero clue what was going on/what we were asking (trying to just order two beers)/what she was doing. This was fortunately an anomaly as the rest of our experience was positive. There are a LOT of great beer options that are a nice break from the stereotypical German beers in most restaurants in Berlin. We first had a bratwurst, which was pretty no frills. We then split a philly cheese steak sandwich that was packed with lots of meat and flavor. Our server was also fantastic and was very knowledgeable about all of the beers and how well they pair with their food. She was also honest about what the beers offered (i.e. was the beer unique in flavor compared to others of the same type? Was the addition of "x" ingredient actually something that could be tasted?, etc). We really appreciated the time she took to discuss with us what we like and what she recommended based on that knowledge and what we were ordering to eat. Overall, they have a vision regarding how they consider beer and food pairings. It would be interesting to see how they take it into the future. read more

I stumbled upon this place biking through Berlin. It is a hidden gem. The beer choices were good and also delicious. One of the previous reviewers said the prices were exorbitant which is why he gave one star but I just don't think it's that expensive for a major city like Berlin. The popcorn is addictive and the ribs (which include a side) did not disappoint. I HIGHLY recommend coming here for a craft beer on a nice day. You won't regret it. read more
