Talked to the owners my first trip in. Both are ex-head chefs from Beni Hana, Sushi Den or Magura in Denver. Focusing on just 7-8 fish, their rolls were amazing, the Sashimi was perfect, and the Nigiri sushi was just right. When I left, they said "see you tomorrow" and I'm tempted! The rating is high for a sushi takeout - not for a sushi sit-down. Fugakyu in Boston is a five-star sit down sushi house, and this is good, but not in that class. read more

You really can't beat the prices here. Their sushi rolls are really nice and they have a lot of unique flavors and choices. Last time I went, I had the Castle roll which was really good. They have very fast service and a lot of unique options like sushi burritos and poke bowls to try. I think one of my favorite things about their sushi rolls specifically is the different sauces that they put on it - they really make the flavor stand out. read more

Okay, I was not expecting Sawara. Not at all. First off, the menu is huge. There must be 60 rolls. Another 30 items. It can be overwhelming. Thankfully the people there are incredibly nice. I was able to take a paper menu and a sharpie and mark what I wanted. I ordered 7 rolls. None of which I had heard of before. All of them are great. Regretfully I was only able to finish 5.5 of them. Everything I ordered has a spicy icon. The hottest roll on the menu (look at the icon) is the spiciest food I have had in Colorado and the flavor is fantastic. I did not have high hopes when I went in, the menu made it seem like it would not be good. I could not have been more wrong. Really good and I cannot believe that two of us ate our full, had left overs and I was happy with the bill. (Low cost!) I cannot wait to get back. read more

I love sushi. Expensive sit down restaurants, all you can eat restaurants, sushi train restaurants...I've even been known to dabble in pre-made grocery store/gas station sushi on desperate occasion. So you can imagine my excitement when Castle Rock got this sushi place off of Founders. I stopped by to try it the day I found out it came to town, and I've pretty much been in heaven ever since. Yes, heaven. Spicy mayo-covered tempura-flaked heaven. I see a few of the reviews on here seem to have missed the point of this restaurant. It's not your Hapa or your Sushi Den. I would say it's more like the Chipotle of sushi restaurants. You get good tasting food in a casual, upbeat environment at an affordable price point. The staff is super friendly. Everything I've ever ordered here has been great. My only word of caution is; everyone seems to love this place, so if you're trying to get an order in during peak hours (lunch rush, dinner rush) call ahead and make your order ~15 minutes ahead of time, because yes, they're back there hand rolling all the rolls to order, so it does take a bit to get your order ready. But hey, if you forget to call ahead, at least you can bask in the ambiance of the music videos while you wait for your own little order of heaven. If you're looking for decent sushi with decent prices, then this is the place for you. I ordered the salmon avocado roll & some edamame, both were really good...not great...but REALLY good. Heard about this place from some of the employees at the store I was visiting. It's pretty close to the outlet and central to castle rock. It was pretty good sushi to go. Now I can't compare them to a regular sushi bar/restaurant, since they are only offering a few different fish selections and it's really more of a to go joint. But it was great, sauces where on point. Service was fast and friendly. Tuna was great (didn't get any other fish) rice was fresh. All in all if I ever came back to castle rock I would come back to this little sushi to go joint. read more

Lowered expectations for fast sushi and was impressed by the wide variety of unique rolls. I can't say the chewy texture of everything I'm currently eating is enjoyable. The nori is soggy and chewy, the yellowtail has a steak-y texture, and there's a whole lotta chewy krab overpowering the good stuff. Poor quality fish. I'm just kind of grossed out and won't come back no matter how desperate I am for a quick meal. People who rated this 5 stars constituted by a wide variety of coastal sushi experiences truly have not lived to eat real sushi...this is not even remotely close. Ok. Fast. Hipster. Tasty. They have a large selection and the food is fresh. But the portions are smallish. First time here and I had the Spicy Poke Bowl, the Special Crab Roll, and Green Tea. Well, I'm not a fan of the Seaweed Salad, Cucumber, and Lettuce in a Poke Bowl. Avocado - Okay - but the rest is just filer. And the fish - Salmon and Tuna - was chintzy; small portioned. The rice was fresh and tasty, though! The Crab Roll - well, it was actually KRAB. I was expecting what other places call a Spider Roll. Not. And check your Tea! They give you a cup of hot water and a Tea Bag (no big deal), but the first one was Mango Green Tea. Overall, an okay experience, but it is FAST FOOD SUSHI! And a skoshi-bit expensive too. read more

I just want to say, first and foremost, Sawara has SOY paper! If you don't like the fishy flavor of seaweed, soy paper is a great option. As someone who despises the taste of seaweed, I can be a little picky about sushi joints... but Sawara was a pleasant surprise. HUGE selection of different, and interesting sushi choices, and vegetarian friendly. Great view of the mountains in the dining room around the corner from the sushi bar too. Went here for the first time right after I had my daughter, so I am not sure if I loved it cause I hadn't had sushi in 9 months OR if it was truly good. Don't judge before trying their rolls n sushi. I know they are using fresh and quality fish the moment I tried one pc of their sushi. I loved raw fish n sushi since I was introduced to it when I was about 10 yrs old. I have never seen such variety of rolls anywhere. They even have Mini Ahi Towers. U will not find this in Denver! I especially loved their Dragon Gone Wild, Hello Venus, And their house special fancy roll at $6.99 Butterfly. Very reasonable price, very friendly staffs as well. I eat here at least once a week!! Very disappointed... We ordered a crunch roll, and it came covered in Spicy Mayo (which the menu didn't specify) and when I asked about it, I was told that "most of the customers complain about the roll not having spicy mayo on top, so they just put it on there." After hearing that explanation, I ended up paying for another roll so it wouldn't be slathered in spicy mayo. I wasn't happy about having to buy another roll, and they made no attempt to make the situation right. The customer service was bad, and the food wasn't much better. I'm a sushi fiend, and I love it here! When I lived in CR full time I would come here all the time. They have fresh ingredients, a great staff, and timely service. There are seemingly endless options on their menu, I love the gangsta and playa rolls. The garnishes they use are delicious! The prices are awesome! They're about the same as buying pre-made sushi rolls in the store, but instead you get fresh ingredients, all prepared for you! It's a great stop for lunch hour, or to bring your friends. I should have trusted my initial gut feeling walking up to this place. It looked like a fast food sushi restaurant and turns out that's pretty much what it is. Place smelled slightly fishy upon walking in but still not enough to scare me away. I was craving sushi that bad. Initial thought was to order one or two things to try it before having more.... Well we ordered a couple rolls (4) and was around $40. And turns out that was a poor investment..... Soggy rice, bland soup and just below room temp fish. So, I've been to the one in Colorado Springs and was expecting a similar experience. For reference, that's where the bar for expectations was set when I came in to this one. Came early on a Friday evening (4:30-ish), we were the only ones in there, although someone else was waiting to take out, it's not like it was super busy. To start, the tables were sticky. Ok, not a deal breaker.....we found a "clean(ish)" table and sat down while we waited for our order. In the mean time, we all got our drinks and it turns out the ice from the machine tasted and smelled like mildew. Yuck. The fish came out, it was fresh and tasted good, but the rolls were rather sloppily constructed mainly due to the rice consistency. They pretty much fell apart as your tried to pry them from to foil. Like I said, I was expecting the same experience that I had at Sawara in Colorado Springs. I'll go back to that one, but it's very likely I'll never go back to this one. read more
