We started with a sampler platter of appetizers, and let me tell you: you could tell the dolmas ("grape leaves" on the menu) were made fresh that morning, the hummus was delicious, the salad was refreshing, and the kibbeh and falafel were tasty too. The lamb sandwich was so good; I don't usually like pickles, but I did in that sandwich! We went for a late lunch/early dinner (3pm ish) and it was very quiet inside. My husband and I went for a quick bite to Sawa. The staff is very friendly and polite. We had the sample combo platter which came pretty fast, the hummus was creamy and tangy, nice flavor of tahini. The kebab was good, big and meaty. The falafel super savory and crunchy, I liked it. The only thing we didn't like was the tabbouleh, it wasn't fresh. This restaurant has many rave reviews, including one from someone who has eaten this kind of food "in country." I was eager to give it a try, so tonight my family chose our dishes for a takeout order and looked forward to something great for dinner. Based on reviews I ordered falafel, kibbe, and chicken shawarma. My husband had a gyro and my daughter ordered the feta dip (which turned out to be cubes of feta and nothing for dipping. Unfortunately, we all agreed it was very okay. Everything was palatable, but it lacked the sparkle of meals we've eaten at other local eateries and at our Greek friend's house. My husband and I had the great good fortune to be able to travel in Istanbul and Greece over the summer, and the food was...better. I understand that region matters; perhaps I am not as enthusiastic about this version of food from that part of the world. Salads are great. The falafel is The best! Not soggy, not oily and crunchy outside! Their bread is not what you expect, and their sauce with the falafel is not tzatziki. This seems like a more traditional place. I highly recommend. read more

The salads were good, with a slight up charge for the house salad to be a Greek salad. The house salad was chopped Romaine, tomato, and cucumber. It had a lemony, mint dressing. This house salad was used as the base salad for the Greek salad up charge. Ahhhhh SAWA! What an amazing hidden treasure. Riding down El Camino Blvd you might miss it, but once you walk in and taste the authenticity, you won't forget it. I've come here a few times and I'm always pleased with the service, the flavors, and the kind workers. Sawa has a quiet ambiance and I've noticed a lot of regulars come in (like myself). Part of me was hesitant to write a review here because I enjoy coming in for nice cups of tea in the quiet but this place deserves a line out the door. Lets start with the drive in. As you drive in the parking lot and look at the area and building you start to think, this place seems sketch or may not be that up to par. Don't judge a book by its cover, food and customer service was great! I order a Gyro and it wasn't just good it was delicious. The quantity, quality, and amount they give you is generous for the price. I order my kid a cheese burger without the cheese but even though they put cheese on it by mistake they fixed the order no issues. Also shared the hummus and pita bread which was very tasty. The hummus tasted fresh and they give a huge amount to share. The fries could use a bit more seasoning but no biggie. The rice pudding was something else. It was refreshing, tasty, and just the right amount of sweet to curve your sweet tooth. It had some kind of taste to it that made it really good and I found out from my sister in law, they use some kind of rose water to make their rice pudding. I'm going have to double check this next time I go. Overall great hole in the wall joint that needs more attention because it was a great place! read more

After reading so many good reviews we tried Sawa out and it was a disappointment. I ordered a Giro and sent it back because the Giro meat was like shoe leather and tasted old. The lentil soup tasted like potatoe soup, grape leaves were so so, but the spicy potatoes were good. Service was so so, with only one server, she was very nice. Ok. So. The restaurant from the outside is nothing to write about. HOWEVER, the food is absolutely amazing. I got the sampler platter: Tabouli, Hummus, Kibbeh, Falafel, stuffed grape leaves, and pita. Guys! This is all freshly made to order and is quite possibly the best I've ever eaten (and I've eaten this food in country). The falafel was on point, crisp outside, moist and tender inside. The same with the kibbeh. I'm not a big fan of stuffed grape leaves, but I would order these by themselves. They were tender, had a great filling, and just enough of a tang to make you want the next one. The tabouli was so good, I ate it like a regular salad. Of course I used my pita bread with it, but it was amazing. In my culinary classes, the rule was this: if you have to add salt and pepper to the food at the table, then it's lacking. The blend of spices in all of this food was fantastic. No extra anything needed. The owner served us and was a very gracious host. You could see the pride in his face as he served us. Sawa Restaurant & Grill have great Greek dishes. The outside appearance of the restaurant is lackluster, but the interior is much nicer. Their menu may be simple, but the quality of their Greek food makes up for that. The menu prices are decent. The chefs at Sawa only use real ingredients in all their dishes. Some of the menu items are dairy free or gluten free. There are vegetarian options too. The staff are patient, considerate and kind. Tried for the first time last weekend and it was pretty empty. Older building has been several restaurants and this one has attempted some cheerful updates with paint and fixtures, but we felt the lighting was too bright and disjointed. Ambiance aside, the food was lovely and fresh, so we enjoyed our visit. The hummus was some of the best we've ever had. Also ordered the yogurt cucumber and enjoyed its light, fresh flavor with the rest of our food. Good quality olive oil and nice depth of flavor in hubbys lamb and my chicken, though my chicken texture wasn't great because I am not a fan of tendons and gristle and got a couple of those bites. Ordered rice pudding for dessert and not a fan of the floral essence (maybe orange blossom?), but glad we tried it, anyway. Will likely return, but not in a rush to do so. read more

First time at Sawa, and went based on a recommendation from a coworker. The outside doesn't look much, but the inside is clean and well-maintained. It's got an older New York diner vibe. I went with my husband and a friend on a Friday evening. The place was empty besides us. The server was a young woman who was attentive and friendly. We ordered the falafel appetizer, hummus, three gyros with fries, a large Greek salad, and baklava for dessert. The falafel comes out hot, and it is very good. The hummus is also good, but the pita bread is a little lacking (thin and chewy). The gyro sandwich is stuffed with fresh veggies, pickles, and gyro meat. Delicious. Fries were hot and crispy. Perhaps we could've done with just one us having the fries as a side, as much of it ended up not getting eaten. The Greek salad is flavorful but full of stuff I don't particularly like--bell peppers and olives. I should've maybe opted for the house salad instead. The baklava is very sweet, and not super memorable. I like that the bathrooms are clean and the service is prompt and friendly. I don't like that the booth seats are uncomfortable and that they serve soda out of cans (I'm a fan of fountain drinks). The BEST part of our dining experience came at the end, when the check came. Sawa gives you a lot of value for your buck--it's very affordable. In summary, solid Mediterranean cuisine for not a lot of money. read more

Not bad, but not great. This place has a lot of potential. Very nice staff. My only complaint is that they really need to stop cutting corners with the meat in their gyros and their sides. If they had gyro meat that was roasted and sliced fresh for each gyro, it would be a million times better! They have wonderful hummus and tzatziki sauce, but their $2 side of fries were basic frozen crinkle cuts. With all the good reviews, I can't help but wonder if they started off with better quality food. I probably wouldn't come back unless I hear that they change the meat.
