The store is organized into categories so it is easy to find what you are looking for. Besides the spices, you will find honeys; maple syrups; recipe mixes; extracts; and sauces. The quality items make a great gift for someone or to just use in your own cooking. They also have a rewards program that you get $10 off for every $100 you spend. Their store is conveniently located in Lafayette Village. I am a fan of many of the shops in the plaza and only wish they had more parking. When they have events going on, parking can get tricky. I have always been able to find a spot, but it may take some time. Once parked we went inside their cozy, organized store. Everything is clearly labeled and some items have accompanying recipes! During COVID-19 they ask all customers to sanitize their hands upon entering their store. All customers and employees were wearing masks. Have never been to a store like The Savory Spice Store before moving to NC. The staff is very knowledgable about all of the spices, rubs, seasonings that are available. Another nice feature they have recipes throughout the store to give you some idea of what you can make with the different concoctions that are for sale. The store is set up with in different sections based upon what you will be cooking, very easy to understand the layout, and again any of the employees are more then happy to help you out, discuss what you are looking for and help you make the right purchase. Another great feature is you can buy the spices in any size hat you want. They will weigh out your spice so that you don't have a shelf full of old expired spices because you can only buy 4 ounces at the grocery store. Love this spice shop, located at Lafayette Village. First time here and very knowledgeable and friendly workers explained that the red labeled jars are for smelling, tasting before you buy. They have so many spices from various Nations and it's organized well. Lots of regulars come in as they have a loyalty program you can sign up for. The spices are priced by the ounce or whatever amount you desire so it's great place to experiment to see which ones work for you or in a recipe. Before I even go into how AWESOME this place is, let me be the first to dispel the myth that if you buy your spices here, you'll be paying more....SOOOO NOT TRUE! I did a price comparison, for the same spices at the grocery store vs Savory Spice, I bought 7 spices total (1 ounce each, which is almost 6 TBSP of each spice (salt will be less than that b/c it's heavier, and dried spices, like parsley will be way more than that since they're so lite.) and only spent $15, at the grocery it was going to be over $40....HOLY COW! Hands down I know where i'm coming next time i need more spices! (P.S. before anyone calls FOUL! on my review, I have also posted this review under the charlotte location, b/c i have had the same EXCELLENT experience in both locations!) The advantages to using savory spice over the grocery?! 1. Spices are fresh, and freshly mixed and ground. 2. You pick how much you want (as little as 1/2 ounce and up). Some spices I will only use once when experimenting with a dish, so why buy a bottle when all i need is a teaspoon? (Contrary to popular belief, spices CAN NOT sit on your shelf for years on end and maintain their level of potency. It's better to buy smaller amounts, it will make your recipes taste better when you have fresh spices.) 3. VARIETY!-I am making Chicken Tikka Masala, one of the components is Cinnamon, why settle for the kind you can buy at the grocery, when you can come here and pick from 5 different kinds?! How cool is that? 4. Every container has the name and description of the spice. It even gives you an idea of how to use it. 5. You can smell and taste every spice in there. Grant it, I'm still learning the art of using more spices and less salt, so i don't quit know exactly what i'm doing just yet, however, knowing that that's an option in the future is super awesome. 6. Staff are exceptionally friendly, and knowledgeable. 7. They send your spices home with you in cute little bags (or a bottle if you desire), but they don't just sharpie the name on the bag, they have nice labels made up with the spice info on it, making it easy to remember what you have. This place is a blessing and a curse all in one. It's a blessing because they have any and every spice you could possibly need. They have ground spices whole spices like dried peppers and mixes like their taco seasoning and their dried cheese blends. On top of it the have gift cards and git sets for the spice lover in your family. To add to the amazing set up in the store, they have recipes on note cards scattered throughout that you can take home with you. Many of the recipes are absolutely fantastic! On top of that ALL of the staff are friendly and helpful and make you feel like family. All of the spices are fresh fresh fresh! At one point they even had people bring in their store bought spices and trade them in for a $1 credit (per jar) on the Savory Spice shop spices. If it was a spice they carried they would let you compare theirs to the one you bought at the chain store. It was a big difference in some instances. Now the curse to this place is every time we go in my wife spends way too much money on new spices or restocking. But I do benefit from the amazing food that these spices make. As soon as the tour group stepped in, we were greeted by not only the warm smile on the owner's face but also by the blend of hundreds of spice shelved all around the store. As the owner explained, this store carries over four hundreds spices on shelves, with over a hundred of proprietary blends. The Savory Spice Shop started out as a concept idea by a Denver couple, and as they expanded their business they turned to the world wide web for franchise opportunity. The owner for this store is quite knowledgeable and funny. She told us that "there's sample bottle all over the store, I encourage you all to get a taste, but only a taste, and you throw the rest right on the floor, like this!" Which could explain why the aroma is so strong in here. By the way, there really is plenty of samples. We had the spiced tea and their dip blend, which is center on dill with ranch added. When I asked "can I take some pictures around the store?" she replied, "sure! of course! you mean around the store, or should I go get my husband for a picture?" Like I said, real humorous lady. P.S. A wonderful spice shop with incredibly knowledgable service, even if you come in not expecting to buy something you will come out with either spices in your bag or a guilty conscience for not buying any of the delightfully diverse selection of spices! The blends are excellent, you can purchase very small quantities, they carry true (Ceylon) cinnamon (the only one that works in hot tea) and they have a loyalty program to earn store credit with purchases. In fact for 3 years my gifts to the cooks in the family come from Savory Spice shop. So to make a very long story short, there was a pretty significant overcharge that took a week to clear up. Cindy Jones, the owner, went overboard. She is the most extremely customer service oriented person I think I have ever met. I don't care where you are in Wake County or NC for that matter. A lovely store crammed full of spices, oils, flavored sugars, vinegars, dip mixes, honeys, etc. The products that I have tried from this store are delicious and make wonderful hostess and holiday gifts -- who doesn't like an extravagant consumable as a gift (compared to a reindeer sweater for example)? The store carries flavored avocado oils which are especially healthy to use when the dish is cooked on high heat. I bought some of their chai nut butter for a friend who loves chai and she went crazy over it. It is a fun place to shop but go in with a budget - gourmet products can really add up! read more

I think it's impossible not to have a 5-star experience here! The scent of spices lures you in from the sidewalk, and you're almost immediately greeted by a staff member who is happy to answer questions and show you the ropes if it's your first visit. They have testers for nearly everything, so you can smell and taste as you browse. And they can package small quantities (say an ounce), which is perfect for recipes where you only need a touch of some bizarre item you probably won't need again until the following Christmas. The genuine warmth of the employees here really shines. But the diversity of product is wonderful. Never before have I seen multiple types of vanilla beans. Or the really intriguing vanilla bean paste. From sea salts to szechuan peppercorn to spice rubs, you'll find everything you need to fill out your kitchen cabinets. They sell in various quantities including "by the ounce" which in many cases I prefer so that I do not end up with large quantities of items aging and going stale in my spice cabinet. Also, while their products are definitely not the cheapest you can buy, you do get what you pay for..... Their inventory is very fresh and flavorful! Review for the Buttermilk & Buffalo Glazed Wings Recipe + Mix Savory Spice Shop makes ridiculously amazing spice mixes for seasoning fresh food and also gives crazy awesome recipes to go with the spices they mix for you. (Check out my other review for the Jamaican Jerk Wings) I bought the Buffalo Wing Sauce Seasoning (divided) from them over 6 months ago and just got around to opening it up. Deciding that I would try their recipe, I prepped a batch last night. Not having buttermilk on hand I used a faux-buttermilk recipe (milk and lemon juice mixed together and then let it sit for a few minutes) and liberally covered all the wings with the buttermilk mixture after adding a hint of black pepper + seasoning to the skin. Wings then went into the fridge to marinate overnight for 15 hours. After draining off the excess buttermilk but not patting it dry and then throwing it on the grill, I let it cook for 28 minutes and it was PERFECT. Also its very spicy so only try them if you really do like hot wings. Well recommended. Seasoning: Buffalo Wing Sauce Seasoning Marinade Buttermilk & Buffalo Glazed Wings Portions: 3/4 cup of faux-buttermilk, 4 whole wings, 1/4 bag of seasoning. Marinade for 10-20 hours in fridge Cooking time: 35-30 minutes on grill read more

Very cute shop in Lafayette Village! Love the decor inside and the wide open space to wander around and check out the spices and seasonings. The owner, Bob, was REALLY nice and gave my boyfriend and I a "salt tutorial" -- showing us the differences between them and telling us about where they are from. The "Murray" Sea Salt (comes from a river) is SO good that it has a buttery finish. YUM. I LOVE that you can walk around and "taste" the spices -- shaking a little on to your hand and licking it off. Simple, yet effective! I definitely recommend the Black Truffle Sea Salt! High quality -- and fairly expensive ($20). Came out with: Dutch Cocoa Powder, Himalayan Pink Sea Salt, Gunbarrel Venison Sausage Spice, California Chives (really cheap compared to the grocery store), Lavender (I was curious and I was thinking about making a cake with it), and Hickory Smoke Sea Salt (mmhhh, you can REALLY smell the hickory)! Such a unique store that can bring so much to bring to the table when it comes to cooking or flavoring food; another Lafayette Village hit in my book. The store is small but laid out in an open manner and decorated very simply (seems like a kitchen to me) that allows you to easily browse or quickly find some help. The selection of spices is incredible, they have so many things that can be hard to find or unique items, their spice blends and rubs are fantastic. One note I will make about their blends is that unlike many store-bought versions, they don't contain salt as the first ingredient, it's actually spices. Their fajita seasoning is one that comes to mind, it contains pieces of chili and I find I actually have to add a little bit of salt when I'm using it. The owner Bob is incredibly friendly and knowledgeable and is happy to help you find whatever you need answer your questions, he happily tolerates my three children spilling the dried corn on the floor ever time we go in there. I have 5 gift cards ($10 each) that I received when I purchased a $100 gift card last Black Friday. Unfortunately, I didn't realize they had an expiration date of 10/31. I just called to asked if they would honor the cards even though they expired...the lady who answered the phone said no because they can't override the system...I find it hard to believe. There is no financial loss to them that they would not have had 3 weeks ago so why not take care of the customer? The owners always seem to be there and they know everything about every spice around. You can taste anything and How smart that you can buy spices in little 2oz refill bags rather than having to buy jars each time. And love the extracts here too. It's so hard to find pure anise for my Italian sesame seed cookies, but they have it here and the quality is excellent. The Owners, Cindy and Bob are amazing. They are dedicated professionals that make visiting their shop an adventure and fun! I'm not a natural cook or "foodie" and they always make me feel welcome! What I love is that they do have pre-mixed spices ready to go for the less talented cooks out there! Just go in. This place is freaking amazing! You can taste and smell anything they have for sale before you buy! You can buy as low as an ounce (I think it's that) or even a pound of whatever you want and they have so much I have never heard of, but I feel like I should suddenly have! I bought ground mustard last time and this time I got Turkish bay leaves...a fair bag for $2, ground New Mexico green chile powder for my bestie from NM who said it is spot on and amazing and I found something that made the damn domestic goddesses sing......Worcestershire sauce powder!!!? I love, love, love the Savory Spice Shop! How do I love thee? Let me count the ways... 1.)They grind their spices in-house on a weekly basis. 2.) For a small shop, they have a huge selection. I think I counted around 2 dozen types of salt alone. You can also find many exotic/unusual spices. 3.) The staff is super friendly and helpful. There is no judgment if you don't know what something is and they will go out of their way to help you find something. They'll also help you find recipes. 4.) Tasters! You can smell/taste every spice in the store before you buy it. That really helps when you're trying to decide between two dozen types of salt! 5.) You can purchase any amount of spice, from 1/4 oz. in some cases all the way up. This is great if you want to try something new or if the spice is particularly expensive. 6.) Spice blends. I normally stay away from spice blends because I can usually make them better and cheaper myself, but Savory's spice blends are really great. The often contain some pricier spices and have great balance. The steak rub I tried, Massive Mountain (I think), was really great.
