Nice place. Good customer service. Found items very quickly. Fresh produce. Friendly staff.

Nostalgic! When Save on Food first opened on Campus, I was excited as a student to do grocery shopping! But. It's really. Expensive. It doesn't make sense that it costs just as much/even more to shop at here compared to fancy organic grocery stores like Choices, Whole Foods and Stong's. Is it because there's 0 competition around the neighbourhood? The only item I found that is more reasonable than other grocery store is Yakult. I really don't know why. Also, the seafood selection is sad compared to other grocery stores like superstore. I really miss the time when Daily Catch was available at Westbrook mall. read more

Wow their food bar is crazy expensive!!!! I paid 12.75 for a little bit of rice and some chicken!!!! read more

It seems that a crisis brings out a person's, or corporation's, true self. Save On is not following the directions of the Provincial Health Officer, and has apparently not forwarded that information to their staff. The Provincial Health Officer's direction says: "Clean high touch surfaces such as ... carts or hand baskets between each customer ..." They are not sanitizing baskets and buggies between each customer. The only carts you can take are the ones in the parking lot, and those do not have a staff person disinfecting them after being placed there by a customer. The Provincial Health Officer's direction says: "Post signs at each check out indicating no customer packaging is to be used or placed on check out counters." Save On is not allowing customers to even *carry* their reusable bags into the store. That is totally irrational. Should I also strip down naked, too? Do I have to give up my purse or backpack? So, let's review: the things that have actually been touched by other people are not being cleaned, but the things only *I* touch, no, only some of the things I've touched, can't even be brought into the store. Save On is not trying to keep me safe. Save On is not seemingly thinking at all. When I brought this to the attention of the manager, he wanted to show me Save On's internal memo. They didn't need to issue an memo--they needed to follow the Provincial Health Officer's directions, as written. In the before-time, I would normally drop $300+ per week at Save On. They have entirely lost me as a customer. read more

Expensive compared to other big box supermarkets , meat/fish counter not very knowledgeable, long lines due to few check outs for its size and something totally weird ... the self checkouts are in English, Mandarin and Cantonese!!! we're in the heck is the other official language of this country? why not French? are we to assume that French-Canadians are second class citizens after the Chinese? what is wrong with this outfit? read more

OMG A grocery store on Campus!!!!!!! I have waited 7 years for this! The downer--It's still expensive. :( What's more expensive--Save on foods or Safeway? How does it compare in price to the small grocery stores located in the village (i.e. granville island produce)? Well this Save On is a lot smaller than most, but it does the job and is clean and well organized. I love that their dairy section is behind closed doors (clear glass doors!) so that it saves energy by keeping the cool in. Well it's good to have this near by for quick shopping and it's really convenient if you have a bike or car. read more

Horrible food quality at premium prices. They'd be out of business if they weren't the only option on campus. Meat is spoiled about 1 out of every 5 times I buy it there. Imported cheeses taste freezer burnt. Vegetables are the quality you'd feed to animals on a farm. They make it worthwhile to leave campus and buy groceries in Point Grey, Dunbar, or Kits. I brought these points up to the assistant manager once, and he told us he'd solve it and told us "groceries are on me today". So, we filled our cart and when he checked us out, he charged us for everything except a $15 frozen turkey. The fact they are allowed to operate on campus is just another testament to the blithering incompetence of the UBC planners who are rookies at community development. Buyer beware. read more

The Starbucks in the store sucks. The employees constantly changes and drinks comes out weird. I ordered two exact same drink and they came out different shades of color. I recent also went for a refresher, with no ice. And it tastes like nothing. I understand they have to replace ice with water but I don't think it should be flavourless. I asked them about it and the employee told me it's because there a lot of room for venti and the grande I got has less too'.So I'm paying extra money for water? read more

Meh, it's a big chain grocery stall. Has most of the essential things but needs more "ethnic" or Asian items considering the neighbourhood its in. Service is great though, everyone just seems to be nice and helpful all the time. Prices are high compared to Superstore/No Frills but not so high as to justify a trek off campus unless you're buying for the month or something. read more

Standard like all other Save on Food stores but the prices here are definitely higher. I have checked and compared price of many items to what you pay at other supermarkets, sometimes even other Save on stores and everything costs more here. And they run out of products often. It's the only large supermarket at UBC in a densely populated area. Shame they use that to charge more. I hope sometime soon competition comes to UBC. read more

While service is always good at this Save On, I noticed that their meat section regularly sells spoiled poultry before the best by (BB) date. Over the course of two years, my partner and I purchased 6 packages of chicken that spoiled before the BB date. This hasn't happened to me at other stores. read more

Large supermarket chain which opened in the Westbrook community near UBC. Largest selection in the area with free 2 hour parking above and underground (entrance at the far end near the community centre and school). Deli area has serve-yourself hot entrees which you pay for by weight, really popular at lunch with all the construction workers in the area and the nearby high school. Bakery is ok, deli average, fresh produce good but usually more expensive than smaller produce stores but convenient to do all your grocery shopping in one store as there is not a lot of options in the area without driving to west 10th or Dunbar area. Rotisserie style chicken is available near the deli but usually sold out after 7 or so. Good price and tastes great. After a few years they are starting to carry more Asian items beyond the 'Asian foods' standard supermarket aisle. Wish they carried more varieties of rice, especially Japanese short-grain types but still, getting better. Good meat selection with a variety of cuts of meat and make sure you get a SaveOnFoods More card to take advantage of the numerous specials and collect points. Self-checkout area is good but find it confusing for produce as if there are different selections such as types of apples, you can't see the price to make sure it was the type you bought. read more

I went to buy meet this morning around 11am (September 29th, 2021) the Asian woman at meat section was so rude and aggressive. I left with a bad experience. She couldn't understand English and instead of being humble and asking to understand what a customer is requesting, she was rude and aggressive. The problem is that it is not the first time, she was aggressive in the past. I think management in save on has to observe their employees, there are other people who deserve to be employed and be at her place. #bepolite #hireSomeoneDeserving read more

Wow, how did an entire new neighbourhood pop up all of a sudden on the south side of campus?! There's a bike shop, doctor and dentist offices, sushi, BCL, and Save On Foods beyond the roundabout. The points system has greatly benefited me. Just the other day, I was able to redeem, and therefore went home with a bunch of spring onions free of charge! Spend money, save money, I like that. Save On also has bottle return as I understand, and sells everything from groceries and produce, to beauty products and around-the-house essentials. Downside to this place, is the looooonnnnngggg wait time at peak hours for check out. Definitely don't shop when you're hungry, either. You will spend more than you plan for initially, so I've learned with making this mistake over and over again. You'll be all, "I just want to go home and cook the delicious foods!" Maintain your patience, they're doing their best, no matter how slow that may be. Even if you leave with armfuls of groceries in (hopefully, your reusable) bags, the stop for eastward buses is conveniently located on 16th Ave at the roundabout. read more

This is a review of the staff members working at Save On Foods at this branch only and does not address any other issues such as prices etc. I have found the staff members working here to be extremely helpful, especially but not limited the staff working in the dairy section. Several times I asked someone to check on the availability of a specific product I needed and without exception everyone I asked was courteous, patient and helpful. For example, today Fransisco went into the back room (fridge area) and spent literally 10 minutes moving boxes to get me the specific milk product I wanted. Other people including Jeff and Kevin working in that area have also been most helpful and patient with me. Salute to the staff working at this Save On Foods branch!! Thank you. read more

They sure snagged a great spot for this major development, almost like a Whistler-like Village feel, with some retail shops and eateries like Menchies and Chef Hung within walking distance. Big store, with free parking at the front. Nice that the washrooms are right beside customer service when you walk in, to your left ;) I do find the bakery stuff fresh, and do shop for their lemon meringue pie ;) read more

All the self-checkouts were in Chinese. I may be part Chinese, but I still find that a bit offensive. Way to pander to stereotypes Save on Foods. Not everyone who lives at UBC is Chinese. read more

*2/30* Since the Wesbrook Village is still under construction, there hasn't been a chance for lots of places to open up...save on is a great one-stop shop when you're stuck down there (or anywhere on campus for that matter), especially since the BC liquor was recently relocated right next door. They have a huge selection of ready to eat meal items, including a pay-by-weight salad bar and hot buffet. Because of this, most of the clientele appears to be construction workers on their breaks. The store always appears to be full of people in safety vests and hard hats. Prices are good - especially if you shop sales and use the membership card (free to sign up and you don't have to hassle with filling in the details when you first get it). Which leads me to my absolute favourite thing about Save On Foods: BULK BINS! Yes I know, they are quite literally the mortal enemy for those with food allergies, but thankfully I am not one of those unlucky individuals. They have everything - basics like flour, oats, sugar; various types of candies and chocolate; huge variety of dried fruits; powdered soup stocks; muffin, bread, and pancake mixes; and, best of all, spices. They also have a pretty broad range of organic bulk products. Parking is also complementary for two hours, no tickets or validation..feel free to exploit that while wandering around other shops in the village. read more

Put a special order on Tuesday and promised that it will arrive on Thursday. Employees were quite helpful, but guess what, they never put the order through! Management: put some money to train your employee how to put special order! And when you screw up, don't find tons of excuses. Try to solve the problem not give me excuses! read more

Save On is Save On, for better and for worse. I want this review to focus on a certain perspective - organic and health food. Somehow, not sure how, Save On @ UBC became a really good source for organic food at a reasonable price. I talk mainly about the produce, but also meet, and other random things. Especially at this season, when there are so many great fruits, head to Save On for fantastic, organic, apples, kiwis, bananas, etc, and all at a very reasonable price. read more

I went into Savon to buy groceries. I could've fired a cannon without hitting an employee. I could not get customer service. I left and did my shopping at Fairways. I came home and went to savon's site on my computer to let them know their store sucks. Their site wasn't working! LOL So I couldn't even contact them! read more

Alas: the high price of success.... we started shopping UBC Save On almost as soon as it opened and were blown away by food quality, friendliness of staff, and ease of shopping. We wished them well, and hoped they would be successful, as it was early days and they were clearly concerned about the future. But apparently their success has exceeded their ability to cope. My last three visits have all suffered the same problems: out of items I buy regularly, horrendous check-out lines (up to 25 minutes), untrained and confused staff, no one available at deli counter. If it's this bad now, I can't imagine what will happen as Wesbrook Village reaches its full anticipated size. I guess I'm already getting ready to revert to Safeway, despite the fact that we have moved to campus since we first started shopping at Wesbrook. read more

Terrible selection and prices. Produce is never fresh or ripe. Employees are always in the way or trying to get past you and they are impolite. Just another cash cow grazing on starving students out here at ubc, nothing new. read more

Freshness is diffently not guaranteed here. Their deli section has 1 - 3 day old food that does not get roated until after the lunch hour rush. Meaning, that there is no hope to get a sandwich or other food made that day. Always day olds at lunch time. I spoke with the manager about the issue, and it was stated that 1 - 3 day old deli items is perfectly acceptable with the Canadian health guidelines. So what, I want a fresh made sandwich, not some day plus old sandwich they are trying to sell for full price. Greedy corporation. Stay away unless you like playing full price for old food. read more

It's so nice to finally have a grocery store on campus. The manager is incredibly friendly and helpful, just helped me with a parking issue with Diamond Parking (they ticketed me even though I was shopping for my 1 hr free! Didn't put a ticket on my window so I obviously didn't hold on to my receipt for the month it took to get a notice in the mail.) Anyways, love this store, it's hard to go wrong with SOF. read more

Large store with 1 hour free parking. Due to neighbourhood density & ongoing construction, watch for traffic directions. Extremely poor selection of foods for store size. Cashiers always understaffed; be prepared to wait to check out. In general, understaffed store, with frequently empty shelves and snarky responses to questions from staff. read more

I have been a save on customer since the late 70s, on aug.16 2916 I purchased 6 cases of western family soft drinks on sale for 1.99 a case,as they did not have any orange I took a rain check for 2 cases, since august 16th I have made 4 trips to the store for the orange, again today none so I went to the customer service counter and was told in my opinion rudely that if it was not there it was not in stock. I then drove up to semiamo mall to the save on and there lo and behold lots of orange pop.I will continue to shop at save on but never again at southpoint.
