The Satuit Tavern takes it's name from the original Indian name for Scituate, meaning "cold Brook" and is scituated (ha!) smack dab in the middle of the Scituate Harbor area (with the famous Scituate lighthouse to one side, and the Harbor itself on the other. The food here is pretty great, in fact some of the best I've had. Portions aren't huge, but the quality is better than most places serving bigger portions. I had the "low carb" special: salmon kebabs with asparagus, and started with the greek salad. Both were excellent. The greek salad was fresh and delicious with lots of feta cheese. My main course was excellently cooked and flavorful, including the asparagus which was al dente like i like it. I tried my sister's scollops which were very lightly fried and delicious, and a big plate of food. And my mother crowed about the excellent Lobster Pie (i.e. Lazy Man's Lobster) -- again, a smaller portion, but well done. The place is clean, modern and not full of the usual nautical crap, with a decent view of Scituate Harbor across the bay (only marred by the old abandoned Pier 44 restaurant across the street (thought it's hardly thier fault.) read more

Shrimp are large and ferm. All super fresh. We have had their clam strips before and they were not greasy . This past weekend we tried to order them again and this dish was sold out. Lots of big smiles, the restaurant is very New England with wood on the walls and floors. Parking is easy with a huge lot in front. Very clean floors and even the rest rooms were spotless. My family and I came back to this spot which is very sentimental for us and a family favorite. I have to comment on the restroom.. I thought I was in a bar bathroom at 2am.. DISGUSTING. I dont do seafood but my salad was horrible I dont understand when people serve you a bowl full of the white parts of iceberg lettuce and for that price? YIKES. Definitely has best fried seafood on South Shore, arguably the best in New England. Additionally, their broiled seafood platter is excellent. When available go for the fried oysters. Tough to go wrong with either the fried clams or the fisherman's platter. Their pizza is small, but delicious. Service is hit or miss. Perhaps they realize that because their food is incredible they don't have to provide great service. Or maybe I am just arriving at the painful conclusion that their service is not dissimilar than the majority of businesses in this part of the country. Regardless, the place is always packed and I highly recommend it. Prepare to be unimpressed with the décor - although not the reason to frequent this place. Worth the horrendous drive down Route 3. Perhaps the biggest downfall is that there is no outdoor seating as this place is perfectly located with views of Scituate Harbor. read more

I've thoroughly enjoyed both meals I've eaten at Satuit Tavern. Apparently, this used to be an old fish n' chips place before the remodel, too. The interior is lackluster, and reminds me of a Village Inn or something similar, but the food makes up for it in leaps and bounds. We did the standard fish n' chips at our first visit. Better than standard, their fish n' chips are delish! This past visit, I had to order completely allergen free (due to medical reasons): no butter, no seasoning, no breading, no potatoes (or any starches). Our waitress was immensely patient, polite, and suggested alternatives and potential no-go's. I ended up ordering the broiled scrod (no butter, seasoning, breadcrumbs) and some steamed broccoli (the mixed veggies have butter). Although my current situation sucks, Satuit did a great job of putting out a tasty filet of fish that was perfectly cooked. The broccoli too, were nicely steamed. PS, free bread basket to start (Jamie enjoyed this). The service is above and beyond, as mentioned above, and we've never had to wait an inordinate amount of time for anything. The clientele is pretty varied, a lot of families (could be a pro or con, depending), so sometimes the floor's a bit messy and/or the noise is deafening. It's the day after Thanksgiving, and we need a place to scratch the seafood itch that just can't get satisfied outside of Massachusetts. The only problem is there's 9 of us plus a baby and we're assumedly too far from anywhere that can get the job done. My assumptions proved to be way off base, and Satuit Tavern came to the rescue. They were able to seat us all with minimal headache (for us at least), and the food passed with flying colors. I started things off with a great cup of chowder that was too decadent to even imagine what the caloric intake amounted to. Sometimes you just don't need to know. It was creamy smooth, but not overly buttery, and they were very generous with the clams. Round two was the fisherman's platter - fried scrod, scallops, calamari, clams and shrimp, all served on a mound of onion rings (no french fries at our request). This dish is what MA seafood is all about - no pretentious BS, just fresh food lightly battered and fried to perfection. Why can't anyone out of state get it right without charging an arm and a leg? The platter was so large that I shared it with my sis, but even then we took some home, so plan accordingly when ordering. As a side note, the pizza looked really good as well, but there's no way I'd waste an opportunity for good seafood when I can get good pizza in Philly. read more

Incredibly underwhelmed after being told this is the best seafood in town. First we were seated by the door, and it was freezing. Then we ordered a cup of clam chowder and two 1/2 &1/2 plates. The clam chowder was good but not much was in it. It was basically yummy tasting super thick congealed cream. Before our entrees came out my stomach was churning from all the cream. Our fried plates were pretty impressively piled high. Clams, scallops, French fries, and 3 onion rings. 1) scallops were perfect delicious and juicey. 2)the batter was tastey but over cooked. 3)where are the clams? I know I picked up a clam but all I taste is overcooked Batter. No flavorful belly, no chewy neck. 4)fries tasted freezer burnt. 5)you're a seafood tavern and you can't be bothered to make your own tartar sauce? 6)my drink was finished before the meal got there and never refilled. Wanted to take my father to laid back New England restaurant on the harbor to show off our seafood (he was visiting from KS). Our experience was NOT something to brag about, in fact 2 of the 3 of us got sick after wards. The menu and presentation were both uninspired, there are more creative seafood options available at Applebee's in Kansas. The chowder was OK, but I have had much better (and feel the ingredients were not fresh. either the corn or the potatoes were canned), it was served on the cooler/ cold side - food temperature is a pet peeve of mine and the is NO excuse for cold soup. We ordered several of the seafood dishes (broiled, fried and steamed) all 3 dishes contained food that was past it's prime, I had the fried seafood, which normally you can get away with seafood on its last day if you fry it up, despite coating it in a very heavy batter - it did not taste good. The hubby got the broiled meal and experienced the same thing, not fresh. The steamed plate was consumed by the Kansan, and was the only plate actually consumed - it was also the only plate that was hot- both the broiled and fried meal were lukewarm. There were only 2 other tables being served while we were there and while our waitress was exceptionally nice and kept our water glasses full, the food was just bad, I can't forgive funky seafood. Perhaps it was just a terrible day in the kitchen, but it happened to be our first time there, we will not go back. Especially after both the hubby and I spending most of that night with sickness that can be described as aggressive purging. Super disappointed in our experience - also it should be noted that this was a review of our visit in early September of 2012. My mother and I went to the satuit last night. I have had their pizza before which is pretty good, but also my brothers best friend works there so i know that the ones i have had have always had extra love in them! Last night we were waiting on our table that took over a half hour, which is fine, but we got a drink at the bar and the bartender that looked like Santa was kinda snappy when i asked him for a drink list. (All i see is one beer on tap and a disorganized shelf of booze, im sorry for inquiring about what booze/beer/wine/cocktails you offer..?) So after Santa is done closing the checks that he obviously had to do right then, and ignore me while standing at an uncomfortably crowded bar of regulars getting angry at me for invading their areas... i finally get two glasses of wine from a lady(whom also doesn't like to smile). We finally are sat and starving. Our server was awesome and very attentive to anything we needed, and checked in with us a perfect amount of times so that she wasn't annoying. Her name is Jackie, and she was much nicer of an experience than what I had with Mr. & Mrs. Claus. We got a clam plate (yum! the onion rings are awesome! The clams weren't out of this world, but they were good)and i wish they had home made tartar, Ken's packaged tartar just skeeves me out. Got a salad, which was fresh. And the fajita pizza special, which also was decent. All in all, everything was Okay, nothing stellar. Since moving to Scituate, we have been trying all of the local restaurants. Satuit Tavern scored high. The menu isn't extensive, but there is definitely something for everyone. Food tasted great - we had a surf 'n turf special with stuffed shrimp. Quite tasty, indeed. They have a nice little bar, where they will whip up a good drink or a frosty beer. This is not a fancy place, but it's very comfortable, and you can tell that the locals consider it a great staple. I was excited to see some Keno screens, which are always a fun way to kill time while having a beer and watching the Sox game. Staff was very friendly and helpful (like most places in Scituate!). What we ordered: Chowder Fishermans Platter Lobster Roll The chowder is amazing---especially for those who like their chowder thick (perhaps a little flour-y) and filled to the brim with potatoes, clams and lobster. Wonderful, wonderful chowder. The Fisherman's Platter (fried clams (with bellies), fried scallops, fried scrod, fried shrimp, with (you guessed it) french fries and onion rings was also terrific. The batter is light and the seafood fresh. The lobster roll was on a traditional New England-style frankfurter roll---lots of lobster, not too much mayo. Not an amazing amount of taste to it, but nothing to sneer at either. The service was simply wonderful. Our waitress was so kind to our children, solicitous to all of our needs, and brough everything we needed promptly and politely. One of our children has a food allergy, and the waitress was sympathetic and conscientious, checking ingredients on any menu items we specified---this alone is so appreciated! Great neighbor place - friendly staff, clean and great food. For starters we had the greek & caesar salads - great portions and fresh. I appreciate the greek salad served with a good amount of feta and fresh tomatoes and cucumbers and olives. We had fish and chips and baked scallops. Absolutely delicious! My friend and I were driving through Situate after visiting Plymouth and after taking a look at the water and lighthouse we were ready for an early dinner. Went on Yelp and found the Satuit Tavern with great reviews so we thought we would check it out. It was amazing and would definitely go back. The waitress was super friendly and checked in on us to make sure we were good with everything. My friend had the broiled seafood platter with 2 sides which looked amazing and she said super delicious and tasty and very plentiful for the price compared to other seafood restaurants. I had the mixed grill with marinated steak tips, chicken and sausage which was very flavorful too. The ambience was nice and our timing at 4:30 was good because when we left there was a line. We've been here 2 times recently after reading the reviews here and we are big fans! The first time I had a spinach and cheese calzone and my husband had a fish sandwich and chowder combo. My calzone was off the hook good, fresh and goey and tasty. His sandwich was very good, their chowder is very thick. We went back again recently and since I was dieting, no calzone for me. I did get broiled scrod with baked potato and broccoli and it was cooked very nicely. I was very happy. I can't remember what he had, but he was very happy as well. Found this spot using Yelp as we came here after spending the day on the beach at Brant Rock. Being used to this kind of menu on Cape Cod, I wasn't sure if this place would fit up to its standard. We got scallops wrapped in bacon for an app. This is hard to find on a menu, so we were psyched. I got the clam strip plate, and my friend got the baked stuff shrimp. Our food was EXCELLENT. Not only that, our waitress was a super sweetheart. I think her name was Nancy. If you're down in the area, you should definitely plan on eating here. You won't be disappointed. Plan on getting there early though, because they do get mobbed, and it's a small restaurant. read more

I'm not exactly sure why this narrow strip of restaurant is always so packed. My only guess is the local appeal of servers that know your name and ample parking. And perhaps habit. The food is solid, not the greatest meal you will ever have, but you won't send it back. The portion sizes are large but not in a wasteful way, just plenty so you won't leave unfilled. The noisy atmosphere works well in the bar area but it unfortunately carries over into the dining area, making for strained conversation. The prices are what you would expect for an independent small town restaurant, higher than a mass produced chain but not wallet breaking. I think this is the most accurate 3 star review I can give: better than mediocre and consistent. Go for a random Wednesday night out, but not Saturday date night or birthday dinner. read more

I have to give the Satuit Tavern a 5 star rating. The sign of a good restaurant is one that is consistent. Not solely on perfecting a tasteful meal,but a tasteful experience as well. This restaurant has it all. I love the comfortable nautical ambience of gazing out the window,as well as being seated in a comfortable booth,always served by a friendly accommodating waitress named. My personal favorite seafood is broiled scallops...and the chef at Satuit Tavern does not disappoint! The scallops, and side dishes included, melted in my mouth. They are not chintzy on the amount of scallops they kindly serve you. The sea-scallops are served with bread crumbs in a splattering of drawn butter strategically dribbled on top. The mashed potatoes are whipped in to perfection and while I am not a fan of summer squash it was absolutely cooked to my liking. I love this restaurant...and it's close to home. P.S. The fish and chips got a seal of approval from my husband who is not easy to please! We dined at Satuit Tavern recently and I decided to order the lobster roll. Thinking perhaps settling on something other then the absolutely mouth-watering scallops. Sadly I have to admit it was a major disappointment. The hot dog roll was smaller then usual, and it appeared as though it was barely filled with a quarter of a pound of lobster meat. The lobster special at MacDonald is better! The only thing good about Satuit Tavern is the food. The first time that I went here, we waited for an hour for a table. We didn't mind, as we thought it would be worth it. We were seated and the waitress took forever to take our drink order. Then she took our food order, and never returned. We had to inquire about our food and another waitress brought it to us. Our waitress never came over to check on us and we had to ask for the check from another waitress. Upon leaving, our waitress was socializing at the take out area with other waitresses. We heard from others that we should go back and give it another time, and again we received poor service from a different waitress. Maybe I am just cursed to receive bad service here! I will forewarn those who try to go here on a Friday or Saturday night... there will be a very long wait. For those who do not like crowded small spaces, this restaurant would not be for you. read more

While staying at a B&B nearby I stopped into the local market and asked the guys at the meat and seafood counter where to eat dinner...they all answered the Scatuit Tavern...the locals know!! Best prepared seafood I've ever had and I've eaten a ton on both coasts!! Ipswich clams, the standard of excellence; oysters that were mind blowingly delicious and scallops that melt on the tongue with some of the best onion rings we've ever had. Ok. I didn't say anything after the first visit. I figured it was too good to be true. I had been craving clam strips (the only seafood I eat) so we googled the local area and found them. OMG. Had to have been the finest strips I've ever eaten. So...ok...we raved about the place for at least a week afterward. The bf got the scallops. LOVED them. Says they're sweet and cooked to perfection. He loved them so much he got them again last night and couldn't stop raving about them the whole time he was eating. I had to get something else...just to see if it was fluke. I got the Chicken Gorgonzola (hold on...gotta wipe my face...I'm drooling). HUGE portion...chicken was tenderloin...cooked to perfection...melted in your mouth. Sauce was to die for. I still have half of it sitting in the fridge and I'm not one to leave anything on my plate if I enjoy it. I COULD NOT eat it all!! Both times we went were Fridays, so we expected a crowd. We ended up sitting by the front door the first time...a bit chilly in the entryway, but this time we went a little earlier and got a regular table. Simple decor...comfy and homey. We don't go into the bar side as it isn't our cup of tea. Service both times has been OUTSTANDING. Smiling, happy, helpful, attentive, knowledgeable...I just can't say enough. Went here for the first time recently with my husband for dinner. I've heard decent things about it so after taking a ride to the lighthouse, we stopped here for dinner around 7 on a weeknight. It was pretty busy but we got the very last booth at the end of the row. We didn't like how the set up was- too narrow and awkward. Our waitress, Trish, was not good AT ALL. She didn't come over for almost 15 minutes and when she did, she asked us for a drink order. I told her we were ready to order our meals and with a snobby attitude she said ' alright then' and just stood there waiting for us to tell her. It was rather uncomfortable and we felt like we were burdening her. We both ordered the broiled scrod and it came with mashed and broccoli. When she brought the food, she said is there anything I can get you before you start and my husband asked for butter. Well go figure she never brought it and and not ONCE came to check on us....the kicker though? She checked multiple times on other tables around us and blatantly ignored us. I do plan to write a letter to management about her behavior and lack of professionalism. The food was ok- veggies were cold and both pieces of fish had a ton of skin still on them and that was just nasty. The bread was good, though. The patrons here weren't friendly and almost glared at us when we were seated and then leaving like they knew we were new there. Overall, a horrible experience and we won't be back. Continuing to take our business to Haddad's or Charlie's Too where the food is awesome and service is top notch. read more

Highly Impressed with the flavor & size of the starters and entrees. We shared, chowder, calamari, & onion rings. For entree we had the surf & turf, (steak tips & scallops) 2 broiled seafood platter. Their Chowder was one of the best I've had on the south shore, it was thick and a meal by its self, Calamari has a lovely crispy coating over tender perfectly cooked calamari. The onion rings was good, maybe I was spoiled with how good the other 2 were I didn't notice them much. All of us loved our entrees, we never had stuffed sole before and we all loved it. The reason we didn't give the 5 stars is the potatoes were not great, not sure if it's just a bad night or the brand they use. They just seemed like an afterthought after how much work went into a great selection of starters and entrees. The veg was ok. The presentation also probably didn't help as they were both side by side on a plate. Next time we will try the mash & a baked and see what happens. It certainly won't stop us from returning. We tried to eat at this restaurant today, but the hostess was so surly we had to leave. There were nine of us and when we entered the restaurant, the hostess rolled her eyes and asked if we needed a table. She said there was no way she could seat us for 15 minutes, did we really want to wait. I aked her why she was so frustrated with us trying to eat at the restaurant? She got flustered and said she would find us a table. I've eaten here before and the food was decent, but I will never spend a dime here again with the horrific welcome we received.
