Solid Q Satterfield's is in a slightly off spot off the main drag. I'd driven thru the area a few times but didn't see the storefront until I re-mapped. Anyways, I'm glad I finally made it in to check things out. On my first visit I snagged a half-chicken, some fried Mac and cheese balls and a breakfast sandwich. All were stellar. On my latest visit I got their pulled pork mojo special which was nicely done, along with two quarter chickens-dark. Staff has been super friendly on each visit and the place is spotless. Satterfield's is the place I always have to get to when I'm visiting home. They know how to smoke good bbq! The sides are also great! Personally I love the turkey and mac n cheese! As almost-native Southerners we know barbecue well, and this is probably one of the top five we've eaten at anywhere. The pulled pork was smoky and moist and the Brunswick stew and collards were piquant and boldly flavored, again smoky as they should have been and with a perfect blend of salty and sweet.....so unlike the bland versions elsewhere. Honestly, these were the best bbq sides we've had anywhere. We felt decadent that day and also ordered the fried, breaded balls of Mac and cheese and wereglad we did: moist and cheesy in the inside and crunchy like a hushpuppie on the outside. The owners are husband and wife, and they're also hostess and pit master and working feverishly in the restaurant, anxious to please and ready to refill your Cokes. Also, they have a variety of different meat sauces, from Alabama white to spicy to mustardy....all of them were delicious. I'm a bit surprised by the lack of reviews on this place and probably wouldn't have ever come across it if not recommended by a friend who is local. I'm glad he did though as I dropped in today for lunch on my down to FL. They have recently reopened for dine in and are doing a good job of keeping tables distanced, and having employees wear masks and gloves. It'd be nice if they required those coming in and waiting on takeout to don one as well but I get it, it can be off putting, as silly as it may be. The menu isn't overly complex and they do offer specials of the day whether it be sides or otherwise. They were also nice enough to accommodate a rib and brisket place for an up charge which I appreciated as those are meats that really define a bbq joint. As for sides I opted for the collards (with turkey bits) and a brisket chili they were offering. Overall I have to say I'm quite impressed with that I ate. The brisket was probably some of the best I've had in GA, and the ribs, even if a bit overdone to me, were meaty and had great smoke to it. The sides shined nicely as well, collards came out hot, and the chili with cheese and onions was perfect and something I could've easily had a bowl of. The pc of cold buttered toast is probably the only thing I could've done without. As for sauces, they offered 5 options, of which a plate gets you a choice of 2, but the owner was nice enough to offer me a third. I'm a pretty big sauce guy even if the meat is already fantastic and btw the golden mustard, the Carolina vinegar, and white bbq sauce I tried, the vinegar is the one that stood out the most, with the white bbq being a second. Satterfield's catered a lunch for 50 people for me. They arrived on-time, set everything up, and the food was amazing!!! The hot food was hot, and the cold food was cold. AMAZING! This is truly the best BBQ in Georgia, and quite possibly the continent in my humble opinion. I stumbled upon this little gem yesterday, and tried the brisket sandwich and catfish po-boy buffalo style. It was love at first bite...let me tell you how the brisket bends ever so gently, then melts in your mouth like butter. The catfish is seasoned and cooked to pure perfection! The service was awesome! We went back the next day it was so good, this time we were blessed enough to meet the owner, and he welcomed us like family. He even let us sample boudin sausage he was making from scratch! Brunswick was very greasy, but full of good chunks. Had to add sauce to ribs and Brunswick to get any flavor. White sauce, Carolina, mustard were all 3 very poor recipes. The sweeter sauces were OK. Expected buttered Texas toast, got ONE LONE unbuttered, grilled on one side piece of very small white sandwich bread. Nasty home made pickles not even close.. Upon my stay here in Macon I looked up local barbecue and wanted to come here initially. Unfortunately, I was talked out of it by a local and was told Georgia Bobs is better. That person clearly doesn't know good barbecue. Satterfield's is far better in my opinion. First thing I noticed when I arrived was the smell of smoke, GB's didn't have that aroma which is usually an indicator that their barbecue is going to be lack luster (in my experience/opinion). I ordered two meals (one for lunch and one for dinner, don't fat shame me lol). I ordered sliced brisket and requested the moist pieces. Smelled delicious and looked fantastic. Much thicker slices than at the previously mentioned place, and not slathered in sauce (good brisket doesn't need sauce). I didn't see much of a smoke ring but it was delicious and absolutely moist, so no points lost there. I'd have no problem saying this is a good "Texas style" brisket. The only complaint I had with it was the amount of fat on the pieces I received. I'm not talking large veins of fat throughout the meat but large gobs of it on the top or bottom. I literally had to throw away about 1/3 of the meat I received because it was just big chunks of fat. As for the ribs, they have a nice bark, I noticed a little more of a smoke ring, they are tender but have a nice chew, and they tasted delicious. I can eat these with or without sauce, no problem. Most people don't judge barbecue places based on their sides but for me sides separate the good barbecue joints from the great barbecue joints. Too many places offer generic sides (bbq beans, coleslaw, and potato salad). Satterfields has all that and more. I went with the collard greens and bbq beans. The collard greens are delicious as are the beans. The beans aren't the typical out of the can baked/bbq beans. They are made in house with their own unique flavor (is that honey mustard I'm tasting in the background?). In conclusion, if you're looking for some good barbecue, check out Satterfield's. I'd have given this place five stars if it wasn't for the large amount of fat in my brisket. Everything else was fantastic! read more

Brunswick stew is the best I've had in the south east. They also butcher the meat for the bbq. Definitely is as good if not better than fox brothers in Atlanta. So I've been here a few times. I've tried all of the bbq items available, and my take on it is that it's not really special, overall, EXCEPT the brisket. That's hella good. The item that steals the show is the hamburger steak. IT IS AMAZING. Hand-pattied, grilled, slathered in gravy, served with their wonderful fries.....I'm just so daggum excited about it. Grab a piece of their artisian bread to sop it all up...man. You can't go wrong. The boiled peanuts as an app are just the right thing, too. A real hidden gem! You have to know where to look for this restaurant to find it because it's tucked away off a quiet side street on the edge of downtown Macon. You also need to be there at the right time because they only open for lunch Monday through Friday. Still, for all that, it's worth going to Satterfield's for both the food and the atmosphere. Every inch of the restaurant is covered in kitschy decorations that provide you entertainment while you eat. The menu is surprisingly big and diverse for a BBQ joint, particularly on that only does lunch. As far as what to order goes, I personally suggest the fresh made pork rinds, which crackle in your mouth like pop rocks. Another must try are the french fries, which are the hand cut, fried to order variety. If you haven't tried boiled peanuts, that's something else you'll probably want to check out. Pretty much all the meats are delicious and you get a choice of their homemade barbecue sauces at your table, so you can figure out which one you prefer on your own. The staff is always super sweet and go out of their way to be pleasant and never pressure you to hurry up and order, which I for one always appreciate. Put this one on the list to avoid. I ordered the pulled pork with 3 sides, Brunswick stew, potato salad, and baked beans. While all the sides were OK and the stew was actually good, the pulled pork was so bad I left much of it on my plate. My serving, far from being the kind that can easily fall apart in your plate, was tough enough that I had to give up chewing on some of it. I ended up spitting it out (gross, right?). Making it even worse was the sauce. The pork arrived soaking in way too much sauce. To me, that seems to always indicate a desire in the kitchen to hide something. I did appreciate the Georgia Tech fan in the corner, having only recently asked in these very pages if anyone had ever seen a barbeque joint that wasn't pushing the Bulldogs. Satterfield's is easily the best bbq in Macon. It's a great spot for lunch on the outskirts of downtown, near Mercer's law school. The problem is that lunch is about the only time you can go. They keep less than banker's hours, which is why I don't give it a higher rating. Many a night I wish Satterfield's was an option but it was not to be. The sweet tea is great and I love the boiled peanuts they serve before the meal comes. The pulled pork sandwiches really hit the spot. Not too big, with a sauce that is mildly vinegary and not very viscous as bbq sauces go.
