Fincher's BBQ is a tradition with my family. I live in California but I grew up in Atlanta and my parents are from Macon. So, whenever I come "home" I MUST have me some Fincher's. I've been known to even freeze it and take it back to Cali with me! Thank's for keeping the tradition alive by always being right where I left ya! Hopefully, y'all will outlive me! Very unique place in Macon (haven't been for years, so going off of memory). Overall, bbq is good to very good, if not the absolute best I have ever had. Sides are a bit stronger than the meat. Had pulled pork, which comes with two sauces: sweet sauce (really good but doesn't really complement the pork) and a thinned out tomato based bbq with vinegar I think. Goes better with the pork. Pork itself was slightly dry and stringy, although the overall taste is really good having the crispy ends, which is fun. Sides were phenomenal with especially mac & cheese as well as Brunswick stew. Probably the best Brunswick stew I have had, although to be fair, I haven't had that many. People are really friendly who work here and like to talk (we were talking a bit about Macon history and sights, which was quite illuminating). Many Yelpers are recommending the ribs over the pulled pork, which I find surprising for BBQ in the southeast. If I come back to Fincher's again, I will try the ribs though. read more

For openers, if you think the best barbecue is usually found in the worst part of town, in a place with bars on the window and just enough grease on the table to write your initials, then this is it. What this is, by comparison, is the "older" of the Fincher barbecue joints in Macon. Barbecue in Macon is, almost by definition, Fincher's. Get this: There's been a Fincher's Barbecue in Macon since 1935 and likely in this one location for most of those years. As someone who has spent a lifetime in pursuit of the perfect barbecue (read 100 other Yelp barbecue reviews), ambiance plays its part - either detracting from a good meal or helping make a good plate an all the more enjoyable experience. Used to be a place in Chicago (Carson's) that served good barbecue on white linen clothed tables. Just wasn't the same. No white table cloths here... booths, tables and lots of history. The half chicken plate ($7.95 with a couple sides) was very moist and with full flavor. The St. Louis cut ribs were truly outstanding - great rub, nice bark. Fincher's pulled pork, long strands bathed in their signature sauce, is probably their most popular item. Sides included some really great Brunswick stew, slaw that had some unusual flavor that neither of us enjoyed; what we did enjoy was the world class, hand cut, deep fat fried fries and their home made Mac n Cheese.. three truly outstanding sides. Sauces? Two at this Fincher's, only one on the table at their other Houston street location.Their so-called sweet is truly wonderful on ribs and brisket, and a red mustard/red sauce that works great on the chicken and pulled pork. And if you're a t-shirt collector (the Brown Shoe Gourmet has 248 from across the country), they've got them. Folks in Macon know Fincher's and likely patronize one or the other based on proximity; folks traveling to or from Florida with a hunger for some great 'cue would do well to find the original, in all its 83 year old "splendor" and enjoy world class "cue" in a real authentic barbecue joint. As a bonus, tell the guy in the baseball cap (he has a great story about their barbecue going up in a moonshot), that you want a sampling of those great pork rinds only available at the original. When you think about unique, but world class barbecue experiences, for this purist it comes down to Dreamland in Tuscaloosa, Arthur Bryants in Kansas City, McNeely's in Memphis, Anna's in Atlanta and the original Finchers in Macon. I have lived in middle Georgia since I was born. I have eaten a lot of Fincher's BBQ over the years, and have always enjoyed it very much. My family ate at the Fincher's on Houston. There was no one else at the counter, and two young men behind the counter. There was no eye contact, nor any greeting made. Just, "Ordering to go or for here?". Along with fellow Yelper Alan I find myself in Macon a few times a year on business. I'm a huge fan of BBQ and specifically in Macon, Fresh Air BBQ. This year I was encouraged by my co-workers to try this place because it was better so what else is there to do but get a sandwich from both and compare. I must say this is good BBQ...but [drum-roll]...I'm sticking with Fresh Air. The meat here i think is cooked with the sauce which makes the meat somewhat slimy - not a fan. The amount of meat used was also a little disappointing to the point where when I opened up my wrapped sandwich it at first looked like just a bun. My all time favorite BBQ. This place has not changed since the 1950s it's like going back in time when you walk in. Jake and Alice run this location and they still bring the food out to your window and attach the tray if you like or you can go inside. I love the Pig sandwich it's made with pork and the sauce is vinegar based. I can eat 4. Excellent BBQ run by the Fincher family since before I was born and I'm 50. On the road back from Savannah I googled bbq. Stopped by this small joint and observed overly pleasant all black staff calling the only white guy "boss" reminded me of the movie "GET OUT". It took everything in me to keep from slipping the cashier a note to see if she needed help to escape. Anyways, I ordered the rib dinner. The side choices were so limited. Potato salad, Cole slaw, beans, brunswick stew, fries. That's it! So as to not OD on mayo, I ordered the potato salad and beans. I wanted a green veggie, collards or cabbage would have been nice. I asked about the portion size for $9.75. She said you get 4 bones. I thought that was reasonable. I get the order to go. Well, my 3.5 ribs were tasty. Sauce was good. Potato salad was excellent. Man supposed to gave man n cheese part of soul food so I did not go in. Not too much can be said about Fincher's that hasn't been said already, but that's never stopped me before. I was driving through Macon and needed a snack, so I finally had a chance to swing by Fincher's. I got a Super Pig sandwich, with coleslaw. The sandwich was great. Perfectly smoked, well balanced, and left my hands with a fantastic smell for the rest of the day. The coleslaw was also solid, and I got out of there for under $5. Just a couple quick notes too. The location is in an odd area, but it's not bad. It's not sketchy, just old. Second, while the pulled pork (chopped pork) is coated in their sauce, it's a fantastic combination. With 80 years of history and highest praise from Pitmasters like Myron Mixon, so you know this place is legit. Jake should definitely showcase the nostalgia, the history, his father and grandfather and family that have worked there over the years, as well as some high-profile Georgia legends and famous out-of-staters who have dined there over the years. I'm sure some notable and famous athletes, politicians, and picture-worthy people have eaten at this joint. Hang up pictures of those famous people from years past. Outside the look is so worn, tattered, and beat-up so there an insane amount of authenticity, nostalgia, and "simple southern roadside gem" appeal to Fincher's. A little more charm and comfort would make other patrons feel better and remember their brief dining experience for years to come. Anything to honor the history of the restaurant and the city of Macon would be super cool inside (just a thought). I'll eat there no frills anyday of the week. I'll be back! For sure I would love to here again sometime soon. There is nothing better than a Mom n Pop's style restaurant and being a BBQ joint you really have to stand the test of time like Fincher's has done. Ever since a kid growing up in Macon it has always been a Fincher's BBQ for lunch or dinner. There is so much family history here along with the great taste of some of the best BBQ plates around town. So I'm a Canadian passing through and I here about this place. So happy I came . So I had some BBQ here. And I can't say enough cool things about the food. Have the super pig sandwich. And a cheese burger lol. If you have room have the Brunswick stew it's OMG good. Hell of a compliment to the super pig . Throw in a sweet tea and your good to go. I visited with the owner Jake for a few minutes and left a 20 dollar tip. He wouldn't take it himself and gave the twenty dollar bill to his employee that's worked there for 41 years lol. Every year I commute to Macon for a couple days on business and this year decided to try a new (to me)BBQ restaurant. Result: Fincher's BBQ is an excellent choice for BBQ done right. Great flavor in the meat, sauce has just the right amount of vinegar, stew is a real nice complement to a pork plate. 4 stars because the sides are a bit small, but you are really there for the Q anyway, right? The Blackberry cobbler looked inviting if you're not stuffed from the meal. Jake, the owner, is a friendly hometown guy who loves to serve great BBQ and make the customers feel welcome. I'll look forward to my Macon trip next year just to get another taste of Fincher's BBQ! read more

My dog and I went to Fincher today and ordered a pulled chicken sandwich. Usually I make a sandwich and toss some to my dog to enjoy as well. I then got the order from the drive through and immediately pulled around front to dive into the food. I immediately ate the green beans And turned to make my pulled chicken into a sandwich, and it is was a half of chicken. So of course, no big deal. I'll just have them give me the pulled chicken.. wrong. When I pulled back around to the drive through the lady immediately tells me that its the same amount of meat.... uhhh thats not the point. I want to turn it into a sandwich. So I asked her to replace the chicken. She then insists I give her the plate back which I did not agree with since its a violation of health codes. Especially during a pandemic... so they then give me the same exact used plate and back with the spilled green bean juice. Very unprofessional as the workers yelled at me because I was not pleased and wanted a whole new meal and paid me 20$ for a 8$ meal just to leave. Very unprofessional and rude, and violating FDA regulations in regards to food leaving kitchen. Should be shut down for such unsafe service during a pandemic. If I could leave 0 stars I would. Fincher's is an institution for certain groups of people who grew up in the area. The BBQ is good. But I've been eating Fincher's hamburgers since I was sitting in a car seat when they still did a good amount of curbside business and the curbman carried paper hats for the kids. They may not be all they were when my grandfather was lunching there everyday but you just have to check it out! read more

We stopped at the original location. We figured anyplace that has been in business this long must be worth the stop. The parking lot was full of locals, always a good sign. Two of us had the ribs and one had the pulled pork sandwich. Everything was good, but not great. The service was fast and attentive. We liked the ribs better than the pulled pork. My friend and I recently stopped by on our way to Savannah from Atlanta and the food was great. The vinegar based BBQ sauce was excellent and my ribs were perfect. I'm from San Francisco, CA, so I'm not sure about the price compared to other local establishment, but I felt like it was very reasonable. The servers were nice and asked where we were from (they could tell we were from out-of-town). I would go back if I lived in the area. I went expecting top notch BBQ. What I got was dry ribs, pulled pork drowned in sauce (which wasn't bad but you shouldn't rely on your sauce), and sides that were obviously from a can. Sincerely disappointed since this is such a historic landmark. I truly hope what I experienced was a fluke, but from the groans of the other customers, I don't think it was. Fincher's is as good as it gets. All of the food is delicious, and the people that work there are very friendly.

We arrived twenty minutes before closing on Sunday and were lucky enough to get our order in before the doors were locked. Note to non locals, when the hours say, 11:00 to 2:00 it means the doors are locked and the placed is closed down by 2:00. Fortunately we got two pulled pork sandwiches, sides of potato salad and baked beans before those doors closed. The beans were meaty and tangy. The potato salad was thick and creamy. The pulled pork was great when you added the Fincher's sauce. We love the vinegar based sauce as it isn't the syrupy sweet stuff that so many places serve. We also love the very sweet lady who took care of us giving us not only friendly service, but directions back to the highway and information regarding some ugly weather that was in our path. This place is not pretty. It is a landmark dating back to the 50's. You come for the food. That's it. The neighborhood is not inviting, but you are a few minutes off 75 and the food is so much better than the chains. Myron got this one right. read more
