I wanted to like this place more but I couldn't get over the atmosphere. We stopped here on our way back from Toronto and I wanted ramen (as per usual). We walked in with only 30 minutes to order and eat, they were closing for some reason at 3:00pm. We sat at the bar and ordered some drinks and each got a bowl of ramen. I ordered the veggie ramen and my hubs ordered the buffalo chicken ramen. He rarely gets ramen but when he saw that I think it pulled him in and he really liked it. I thought my veggie ramen was decent- I wasn't a huge fan of the broth, it wasn't super flavorful for me. I couldn't eat it all and had to take the rest home but it wasn't one that I would definitely go back to. I think the thing that made me not enjoy it was the atmosphere of the employees. Wow! Delicious food, drink and incredible prices. I had a macha green tea latte that had a sprinkling of ground cinnamon on top. Not too sweet but absolutely delicious and refreshing on a warm humid day. Hubby and I shared a plate of OKONOMIYAKI FRIES. I've never had anything like these, but they were incredible! Hubby had a GYU DON RICE BOWL. He really enjoyed it. I had the BUFFALO CHICKEN RAMEN w. a soft boiled egg. I coukd easily taste the freshness of all ingredients. My co-workers and I ordered take out from SATO from work so I can only really comment on the food I got and not the physical restaurant, but I still felt very compelled to write a review. I'll start off by saying I am a huge ramen fan. I am such a ramen fan that I will eat it in the dead of the summer heat. I was a little reluctant when I saw Buffalo Chicken Ramen on the menu. My impulse reaction when I first saw it on the menu was....what on earth...but after thinking it over I really had to try it. Buffalo + ramen? My two favorite things so why not. I am surprised I am saying this....but I was pleasantly surprised by Buffalo Chicken ramen! I think it is mostly because of the noodles. They tasted fresh and perfect, definitely not something out of a box. The overall flavor of the dish was pleasant too. Just enough hot sauce to make it "buffalo chicken". Even the chicken in the ramen was fresh and the meat tender. My only slight complaint is the broth was quite oily and they probably could have held back on whatever oil they did put in the broth. Also...a tad pricy for a lunch in the University Heights area. The bf and I rolled out of Sato stuffed. Glad we came in tonight, there were about 4 other parties dining at the same time. I was a little hesitant with the recent reviews, but I have nothing but love for Sato ramen. My only suggestion would be make the curry ramen broth a little creamier/thicker. And maybe check on water levels more often. Someone did come around and ask how everything was tasting though. Food and drinks came out on a timely manner. Bf ordered this blueberry ipa which was pretty good, had a natural color. The okonomiyaki fries were so good! We had to look up what that meant before coming in. According to YouTube, the sauce had ketchup, honey, worcestershire, and soy. Perfect amount of savory and sweet that complemented the creaminess of the mayo. The nori and bonito flakes made it a unique Japanese flavored app. As entrees, we ordered a Japanese curry plate and curry ramen with chicken cutlet. The curry was very fresh and homemade to me. I know someone mentioned it tasted of those at home curry cubes but I didn't get that at all as those cubes have a very distinct aftertaste. The curry ramen, again the noodles (and other ingredients corn and green onions) were also very fresh. The noodles were on the thicker side and the broth was more clear. I normally don't even touch the meat when eating ramen because it's usually hard and rubbery but Sato cooked the chicken so well. Very tender, this is probably the first time we ate all the meat in a ramen order. I appreciated the chunks of ginger at the end. It shows me that the broth is fresh and I had a semi sore throat fighting this weather. The egg was great too, It was perfect amount of savory. The inside is fairly small (Main street location) but the food comes out fast so you can eat and go. I like many of their ramen dishes, I find that I usually don't come close to being able to finish the dish. I personally don't find that ramen makes good left overs because the noodles really absorb the broth and they double in size. Although admittedly I might not be able to eat my ramen because I fill up on the Okonomiyaki fries! There are so good, I'm a sucker for the kewpie mayonnaise. Ramen: it does a body good for those in Upstate NY. In the case of SATO, my body took in their cuisine for sustenance and not so much enjoyment. This moderately sized restaurant with limited seating for parties fumbled a bit on the service, was average with the food, and left me wanting much more. I read the stellar reviews and my friends and I had high hopes for eating here but unfortunately none of us were very impressed. Anyways, here are the main things that stuck with me: SERVICE: - We requested a party of 5 for dinner. Unfortunately, the larger table in the center had several people on and we were informed of a 25 minute wait. We were encouraged to step out and come back, but did not offer to take our names or numbers to notify us. What if a two top randomly walked in while we were away? We decided not to chance it and wait outside in the cold. - Service was decently paced, but nonchalant and not very engaging for recommendations. One of my friends meals were completely forgotten and we were well into our main courses by the time he got his. - My cold Japanese Curry was offered to be remade completely instead of heated up (I'll discuss the meal below). I appreciated that. FOOD: - Spicy Miso Ramen: The broth was light, but a bit too salt forward for my taste, and the spice was very lacking. Also the noodles were too chewy and hard for my comfort. The soft boiled eggs were practically hard boiled, and were not soaked in broth for flavor. The pork was decent and abundant. I respect that they make their own stock and noodles, so that is to be acknowledged. - Japanese Curry: Good portion for the price, and very delicious... or at least it would have been if it was served warm. I have no idea why it was cold, but at least they corrected it for our party. The curry really hit the spot for my desire to be warm because by the 3rd bite its spice easily trumped that of my Ramen. - Karaage Chicken: Well seasoned and juicy! I really liked that cut of chicken thigh, and wish we ordered more. - Gyu Don: The highlight of my experience-- minced meat over rice with egg (overcooked), ginger, and veggies. The flavor was absolutely wonderful and I found myself wishing that I ordered it for my main course. SATO has some hits and some misses when it comes to being the whole package for Ramen and Japanese cuisine. Their prices are reasonable, so I don't feel any regret coming in and trying them out, but I don't think I'll specifically look for them the next time I'm in the area. I had given this restaurant a 4* the first time I went there because a few of their dishes are really good. However, I am changing it to 1 star because of their bad service. I was calling for half an hour to order on Saturday and I kept getting a busy tone. So I finally walked up to the place at 9 pm (they are supposed to close at 10.30 on Saturday, last food order at 10 pm) and they said they were out of cooked rice and they weren't making more. I ordered the regular Spicy Miso Ramen on a cool Fall day. The wife and I went pretty early around 6:00 and there were a few seats available at the counter. It's definitely really small inside and can fill up very quickly. By the time our food came there was a sizable line forming. The ramen was really good. The broth was intensely flavorful, though possibly too salty for some. All of the ingredients worked perfectly, especially the egg. It costs $1.50 for an additional egg, which I originally thought was a bit much, but I would definitely consider adding it next time. The portion was generous as well. It lasted me two full meals. First and foremost, I must say that I am a ramen junkie. Whenever I go to NYC, Pittsburg, or really any city to visit friends, it's always on my cold weather to-do list. Now with Sato, I love the place and the atmosphere. It's perfectly small and quaint like a good ramen shop should be. For me though, Sato has consistently missed the mark. I feel like each broth I've had lacked flavor and depth. And that good, glossy fat that makes it look like you're wearing lip-gloss after you eat it. The last time I visited I got the gyoza dumplings and the Sato ramen to go but just ended eating them in the car because I was ravenous. Don't judge me. Anyway, the dumplings were limp and even though I saw the markings of crispiness, they were not crispy in the slightest. The filling was bland as could be and also cold. I could barely eat them to be quite honest. The ramen was (and always is) huge and enough to feed two. The broth was piping hot, the toppings were just kind of there (not seasoned at all) but the noodles were great. The broth though. Ugh. Sorry, but I feel like anyone was thinks Sato has great ramen has never had great ramen. It lacks complexity and just tastes like it is missing something. I decided to eat at Sato Ramen because I'm moving to Buffalo from New York. I'm a bit concerned at the relative dearth of good East Asian food in Buffalo and unfortunately my meal at Sato did not assuage my fears. I should first note that while I like ramen, I'm by no means not a fully fledged ramenhead. I ordered the tonkotsu ramen (the Sato Ramen seems to be their specialty, but I decided that I wouldn't be a decent judge of quality given that I've only had shoyu and tonkotsu). While the assorted ingredients were of acceptable quality, the broth was muted; it didn't have the depth of flavor one hopes to find in an exemplary tonkotsu ramen. I wasn't particularly ravenous when I sat down, but I didn't finish my bowl - and that is a rarity. I think the reason I'm writing a review is because the service was also subpar. The host was on the phone as I walked in so I seated myself; five minutes later, I had to ask for water, then again when I needed a refill. Given the low broth quality and the lackluster service, the 4.5 star review is in my opinion quite generous. It set my expectations to be dashed. read more

Sato ramen has great food most of the time. Consistency unfortunately is lacking. Regardless of my 2 star review I have ordered food from them more then 10 times. My go to choice is the teriyaki don. Usually great, sometimes things are missing or the portion will drastically change one day to the next. My biggest issue is that I have received less than good customer service on a few occasions, and have been hung up on for what I believed to be the reason of not wanting to provide a takeout order, or maybe they couldn't accommodate it for whatever reason. That's all fine. The way you go about it however, is not. Do not take my word for it. The food is worth trying I can almost guarantee you will love It. I was pleasantly surprised with my first visit to Sato Ramen! When I'm really craving Ramen I usually take a trip across the border to Toronto to grub so I was excited to see a Ramen restaurant in Buffalo with great reviews. When we entered it was pretty crowded and a small very relaxed, communal setting. I believe the waitress must have been new and it took over 20 minutes before someone came up to us. We weren't sure if we were supposed to order at the counter or what at this point so we saw the manager and asked and to compensate for out wait they INSISTED on giving us a free appetizer and dessert. Now THAT is great customer service. And the waitress apologized and everyone was so kind. I got the iced matcha latte (YUM), and my bf got their exclusive Yuzu IPA. Both amazing. We tried the okonomiyaki fries for our appetizer and they were some of the best fries I've ever had in my life. I love okonomiyaki and these really hit the spot! The fries themselves were perfectly cooked and the toppings were enough to coat throughout. For my main meal I went with the Tonkotsu ramen and added black garlic oil. Very good. Not the best I've ever had but I was still very impressed. Bf got the Gyu Don and he absolutely loved it!!! He's quite hard to please I might add. This is a brilliant spot for getting dinner especially on cold days. Try their special fries- okonomiyaki fries and seaweed salad. Both of them are flavorful and nicely done. The pork gyoza is pretty nice too. I have been here a bunch of times. They give you a ramen card. So far, I have tried their spicy miso ramen which is a blessing on wintry days. Whether it's ramen you're after, or one of their many other unique dishes, SATO never ceases to deliver in quality and taste. My go-to dish is almost always the teriyaki don(mouth beginning to water). It's a bowl of delicious sticky rice with teriyaki fried chicken pieces(cooked perfectly) with sliced red bell peppers and onions. Comes with a side of two spring rolls that are absolutely delicious. Hands down, best ramen in Buffalo. I came here for the first time this past weekend and was beyond impressed. This is a small place on Main Street, not too much seating. The menu has a solid amount of ramen options as well as rice bowls. There's also a few appetizers/small plates to chose from as well. I went with the veggie ramen and was so happy I did. It had tons of vegetables in it including pickled mushrooms of some sort. If they had a jar of these mushrooms I'd be going home with them they were incredible. I also loved the addition of a fried lotus root in there too. So much flavor in this ramen! This is going to be my new happy place. Shortly after I moved to Buffalo, many people were quick to tell me that Buffalo has seen a lot of positive change in the past few years. "We even have ramen now!" one person said. When I asked where, she told me about SATO Ramen. It took us a few months to get around to it, but my husband and I had an early dinner at SATO Ramen on a Saturday night, and sat at the bar. I ordered the vegan curry ramen, and he ordered the regular tonkatsu ramen. We were both happy with our choices. I especially liked the pickled ginger in my ramen, and the amount of tofu and vegetables that came with the order. You can order extra add-ins, but I didn't think it was necessary. I usually find the broth served with vegetarian/vegan ramen to be too salty, and never finish it. I don't think my broth at SATO was saltier than the veggie broth I've had at other ramen places outside of Buffalo, but I'm not sure how the meat-based broths compare. As for authenticity, I know that ramen is traditionally made with meat broth, so a vegetarian version isn't going to be authentic no matter what. As long as it's tasty, which SATO's was, I don't care. For dessert, we shared an order of the winter special, miso caramel donuts. They came out piping hot. If you like cider donuts, you'll like these cake donuts coated with spices and sugar. Days later, I was still thinking about those donuts. And now I'm thinking about them again. Mmm, donuts. Love this restaurant! Quick service, comforting food and friendly staff. Very clean and well maintained for how slammed it was. The TanTan Ramen Special was perfect!
