I actually visited this place before months ago, but was called away before I was able to order any food. So today I took the opportunity to drop in to try a couple of selections that I have been wondering about. I give them an A+ for customer service. The waitress and waiting staff were very polite and eager to accommodate dear customers in every way. I saw the cook come out from behind the kitchen and greet. I love the customers and checking in to make sure that everyone was satisfied with their meals. I ordered a sweet corn Arepa as well as the pork & cheese Pupusa. They were quite excellent to my taste buds, although I had never experienced having them before. They even provided me with a nice selection of spicy condiments that I thoroughly enjoyed as well...heyyy, what can I say...I'm a spicy kind of fellow, ya know. (Smiles) The restaurant is spacious with an adjoining room off to the side. Very clean with a very interesting mural hand painted on the wall. I considered it really nice artwork. I enjoyed my time there. I surmised from observing the customers responses; the food seem to be pretty authentic, judging from their conversations with the chef.

First of all, I felt welcome and comfortable as soon as I walked in the door and throughout my visit. This restaurant has that lovely authentic (and clean) vibe to it. I ordered chicken and beef empanadas with a side of rice and beans. I'm not going to give a review of the empanadas, because I just think i'm not an empanada- loving person... So I don't consider myself an authority. The rice and beans were magical... The rice in particular. I've NEVER seen a rice so fluffy and fun to eat. There are fun peas and carrots in there too. And mixed with those delicious beans, it's just a delicious treat...for $2.99! Actually, with my small appetite, I could make a meal of just the rice and bean side. I'll go back for sure. They have other offerings besides empanadas like chicken wings and quesadillas.

This spot is decorated so cute on the inside you would never be able to tell from the outside. It is located in a shopping center with other food spots and plenty of parking. The staff was really friendly and the menu was easy to read with plenty of options, even a vegan option. I ordered 3 empanadas online and it took about 15 minutes to come out for around $4 a piece. I got a chicken and cheese, broccoli and cheese, and spinach and cheese empanada. They were all filled to the brim with filling and VERY cheesy. The broccoli and cheese one was my favorite even though it was light on the broccoli. I would've preferred them to be a little heavier on the meat rather than the cheese but it was still great.

I haven't eaten here in a very long time. They have downsized since my last visit. It was primarily a sit down place. Now, it's primarily a carryout with a handful of tables. The Grubhub menu doesn't nearly cover the offerings. I would suggest on site ordering. The food was on time, hot and delicious.

Yum!! I love love love Sarah's Empanadas! I always order here for lunch. They are HUGE. The first time I ordered, I ordered 5 because I was under the impression they were small, but was impressed when I received my order and they were very large. In the photo, I held it in my hand so you can see the size! My favorite are the chicken empanadas. They're very juicy, meaty, and flavorful!

Go there for the empanadas! I love the Columbian ones (corn dough) and my favorite one is the Beef with potato. It's SO good! My husband loves the Beef and cheese empanadas and he used to come here often when he had to go in the office (before COVID). I also LOVE their passion fruit juice! And they have Brazilian soda (Guaraná) which is a plus! Last visit I decided to try their daily special and it was chicken croquettes, rice and salad for $9.95. The chicken was very dry. It came with 3 croquettes and I ate one and I didn't want the rest. The presentation was pretty but there was not much flavor and it was too dry. I ate the salad and some of the rice. So next visit I'll just stick to my usual order: empanadas. And I'll definitely be getting more passion fruit juice if available! I live in Wake Forest and I would drive there just for the juice and Columbian empanadas.

I was looking for something different and ended up here. It's located in a shopping plaza so there is plenty of parking. The inside is warm, colorful and tidy. I love all the cultural items they have on the walls. It seems to be a family business, service was excellent! Prices are reasonable...you can get two empanadas and a side for $10. They have a variety of combinations and flavors you can try! I tried the beef and cheese and the chicken with cheese. The beef was my favorite!

The corn and cheese empanada was super cheese and a little sweet. The seating area is soooo cute and well decorated. I would love to try the rest of their flavors. Service was super fast and friendly!

My husband had previously been here and so I've wanted to try out Sarah's Empanadas for a while, but it was so tricky as they were always open just for lunch on weekdays! But I think they've changed their hours now so that they are open on Saturdays too. We managed to come by on one of our days off and had a delicious lunch here. Food was served very quickly, everything came out hot, and service was very friendly. We got the Pandebono appetizer - Colombian cheese bread made with cassava starch and a couple of empanada combos (2 empanadas + a side). For my empanadas, I got one of their specials (a Jamaican-style beef), the Mexican, and sweet plantains. He chose the Beef, the special (but chicken), and tostones. My favorite was the special empanada, both the beef and chicken. I'm not sure I would get the Pandebono again but it was tasty to try out! Everything was way more filling than I had anticipated. Overall a good experience!

Great place for a quick snack! The chicken was delicious and steak was as well, however, the steak was lacking meat. So I would've liked to see more meat in the steak. However, still delicious.

How they keep the tables socially distanced

This place has has been around for ages but it's only open for lunch on weekdays so I've never been here before. I've read good things about them and even saw them on a TV show. Finally was able to stop in after my car was serviced nearby. You order at the counter and they'll bring your order to you at a table. We sat outdoors since the weather was nice. It looks like they have plenty of authentic empanadas as well as some innovative fusion empanadas. I got a Colombian beef empanada and a one with shrimp and grits. Both were delicious, and I also enjoyed the special passion fruit drink they had that day. We also enjoyed how the set up decorations on indoor tables to keep people socially distanced. Very fun! Will need to come back and try their other items. We liked their fare better than another empanada place in Durham we tried.

My Afro-Latina heart was so happy…read more I've been searching for really good Latin food since moving to North Carolina, and Boricua Soul absolutely delivered. From the moment we walked in, the vibe was on point. They were playing great music that made the whole place feel lively and welcoming, and I loved that you can choose to eat inside or enjoy the outdoor patio. My husband and I both ordered the Boricua Soul Bowl. He got the chicken, and I got the pernil. The pernil was incredible it was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor. The bowl came with arroz con gandules, collard greens, mac and cheese, and I chose the tostones. I had honestly given up on finding good tostones that I didn't have to make myself, but these were exactly what I'd been craving. Crispy, perfectly cooked, and absolutely delicious with the Guava Lava sauce. Since, I couldn't pass them up, we also ordered a side of maduros, and they were perfectly caramelized and sweet. The empanadas easily made my top five. Crispy on the outside, flavorful on the inside, and gone way too quickly. Also don't skip the watermelon lemonade, it was so refreshing and paired perfectly with everything we ordered. We'll definitely be back. There are still so many things on the menu I want to try, but I already know I'll be ordering the Boricua Soul Bowl. One tip for first-time visitors: if you're sitting inside and trying to get back outside , the exit is the same door you originally came in through on the far glass door. There is a sign, but we watched three different people accidentally try every other part of the glass first, so hopefully this saves someone a little confusion.

Bottom line: This Durham location of Makus Empanadas provide tasty choices I enjoy for delivery…read morelately. The chicken filling and sweet corn filling are my two go-to varieties of these baked empanadas, each hitting the spot and delicious. I am a fan! The Deets: I've had the chance to enjoy meals from a few of the NC Triangle locations of Makus Empanadas. With this Durham location, I mainly utilize delivery to enjoy their empanadas lately. Even with them not being just around the corner from me, they arrive fairly warm and withstand the trip well. One of the draws for me in getting Makus Empanadas are they appear to be baked and not fried (don't get me wrong, I like fried empanadas as well!) and honestly they remind me of mini-versions of my grandmother's homemade fruit turnovers in appearance (a good thing). I usually order these light pockets of tasty goodness with their chicken filling or their sweet corn filling version. I find both pretty good, they hit the spot with chicken giving flavorful and needed protein with not being overly spicy while the sweet corn version being a delicious but not so heavy choice. They even identify which are each variety by initials baked in at the edge of the crust, pretty cool and no guessing. I am a fan and I will continue to keep this location of Makus Empanadas in my delivery meal rotation.

| Overview + Good…read morevariety of empanada fillings to choose from with gluten free options + Texture of empanadas is fine - Size of empanada is ridiculously small - Slow & unfriendly customer service - Makus mostly serves empanadas (the rest of its menu are boring) - Not comfortable ambiance | Review After 3 years, I decided to give Makus another chance. I went to Makus in New Hope Commons, Durham in a Tuesday afternoon, and when I entered its lackluster ambiance with cheap-looking uncomfortable high chairs, I was surprised that there's not a single employee in the front. I saw about 2 of them in the back, seemingly preparing the empanadas. I was ready to order but no one was there to accept my order. I almost left Makus until I saw the bell on the concession with a notice saying, "NEED HELP? RING ME PLEASE!" I rang the bell once, no one came; I rang twice, finally, an employee! I ordered 2 beef empanadas & 1 ham & cheese empanada for a total of almost $13. There was only 1 customer before me, waiting for her order when I went. While I was waiting, the employee who was smoking earlier outside came in and just ignored me as he returned back to work in the back. At around 15 min. mark of waiting, an employee went to the front, holding a plastic with a small takeout box inside. I stood up and asked if my order was ready, the woman just nodded without saying a word, just cold and expressionless. Finally, after about 20 minutes of waiting just for 3 empanadas, the same woman handed me the plastic with my order. I thought they were busy preparing empanadas in the back. Why'd it take so long just to get 3 empanadas ready? Out of all the empanadas my girl & I have tried: Filipino-style, Ilocos-style & El Salvadorian style in the Sabor restaurant nearby, the empanadas in Makus are the smallest. Each empanada cost about $4 (a dozen for $47 - seriously, who would buy a dozen of these?). I'd be fine with this size if the empanadas are gourmet quality with astonishing fillings and flavors, but the taste was alright - nothing special, and definitely not worth $4 in our book. The good part was that the empanadas were not doughy, so the texture was fine. The sauce that came with it was alright, and the 1 small cup is just fine for 3 tiny empanadas. When I came home to eat the 3 empanadas with my girl, she asked me why I returned to Makus after we were disappointed in our first visit a few years ago. I said that I wanted to give it another chance. Now, I deeply regret this decision. | Overall Score: 1.2/5

"Excellent Salvadorean pupuseria and more in Braggtown area of Durham!"…read more We came to try this at around 6pm on a Friday evening. The restaurant is unassuming and sits near the end of a long strip mall. A few other families were eating. One goes to the counter to order (dine-in or carry-out), and the food is then brought to you. The menu is not long-- pupusas (similar to "small but fat quesadillas", if you haven't had one), a few appetizers, and a couple of dishes. They also had three kinds of drinks-- horchata, a tasty mango drink, and a third I don't recall. My wife and I split 4 dishes: a pair of chicken tamales, an order of 3 pupusas with cheese and "loroco" (edible buds from a flower), chicken & potato empanadas, and plantain empanadas. We also got the horchata and the mango drink. Food came out maybe 10 minutes after we ordered, and it was HOT-- clearly just out of the frier for some of them. The masa in the chicken tamales was smooth and SUPER yummy-- I think there could have been a bit more filling, but the taste was still excellent. The chicken and potato empanadas were also really good. I liked the pupusas, but they were a bit mild in taste for me-- I might go for chicken next time, but it was good with the cabbage slaw (see below). And the plantain empanadas were VERY good and super sweet. It's almost like a fried stuffed plantain (also coated with some sugar)-- we couldn't quite tell what the white stuff in the middle was-- my wife thought maybe actual banana, but I wondered if it was some sort of sweet cream filling. Both the savory empanadas and the pupusas came with a side of the cabbage slaw that was quite good-- definitely had some heat to it but not overwhelming. And the drinks were delicious, though the horchata seemed to have an almost chocolate-milk like flavor which was unexpected. The price was SUPER cheap-- pupusas were under $3 each, tamales under $2, etc. We spent $36 including tax and tip and still brought a good bit of food home with us. Service was fine. Neither of us was fluent in Spanish, and the host's English was moderate, so we had a bit of difficulty asking questions (e.g., whether the drinks had dairy/ milk), but it worked out, and he was friendly enough. Overall, we VERY much enjoyed the quality and value of the food we got. High probability we'll return.

I had the 3 pupusas meal (10 dollar value and they are good size) and chose to do three different ones, zucchini with cheese was pretty good, you can't go wrong with the cheese one, the chicharron (pork skin) one wasn't that good, i think overall all of them needed a little bit of more seasoning. The mango agua fresca tasted more like water than mango, but the orchata was very good. I would have given them a 4 star but because of the agua and the seasoning I'm doing 3 stars, I do recommend the place and I would come back for sure. As always this is my honest and personal opinion.

This review is offered as constructive feedback to the staff, management, and ownership of a restaurant we want to see succeed. Today we stopped in during Sunday brunch and placed a takeout order for one pound of brisket and jambalaya. The wait was approximately an hour. I understand that brunch is busy, and the restaurant appeared to be working with two servers, a bartender, a busser, and several people in the kitchen. The front-of-house staff seemed to be doing what they could. The issue appears to be kitchen execution and order flow. Operationally, an order consisting primarily of slicing a pound of already-prepared brisket and portioning jambalaya should not remain in the same production queue for an hour. This is less a staffing criticism than a process problem. Management may want to look at ticket prioritization, a dedicated expediter during peak periods, separation of simple takeout orders from full dine-in tickets, and clearer ownership of orders from receipt through handoff. When the food is already prepared, throughput should be measured in minutes, not an hour. That matters because a restaurant can have excellent food and hardworking people and still lose customers through a bottleneck in the process. The objective shouldn't be to make everyone work harder; it should be to design the kitchen flow so the same people can work smarter and move appropriate orders through faster. Parking has also become increasingly difficult and is worth considering as the restaurant continues to draw a crowd. None of this changes what we enjoy about Succotash. We love the food, the music, the authenticity and the character of the place. We'll be back. But an hour for this particular takeout order points to an operational problem worth fixing. Great food deserves equally great execution.
