I ordered 2 beef empanadas & 1 ham & cheese empanada for a total of almost $13. There was only 1 customer before me, waiting for her order when I went. While I was waiting, the employee who was smoking earlier outside came in and just ignored me as he returned back to work in the back. At around 15 min. mark of waiting, an employee went to the front, holding a plastic with a small takeout box inside. I stood up and asked if my order was ready, the woman just nodded without saying a word, just cold and expressionless. Finally, after about 20 minutes of waiting just for 3 empanadas, the same woman handed me the plastic with my order. I thought they were busy preparing empanadas in the back. Why'd it take so long just to get 3 empanadas ready? Out of all the empanadas my girl & I have tried: Filipino-style, Ilocos-style & El Salvadorian style in the Sabor restaurant nearby, the empanadas in Makus are the smallest. Each empanada cost about $4 (a dozen for $47 - seriously, who would buy a dozen of these?). I'd be fine with this size if the empanadas are gourmet quality with astonishing fillings and flavors, but the taste was alright - nothing special, and definitely not worth $4 in our book. The Deets: I've had the chance to enjoy meals from a few of the NC Triangle locations of Makus Empanadas. With this Durham location, I mainly utilize delivery to enjoy their empanadas lately. Even with them not being just around the corner from me, they arrive fairly warm and withstand the trip well. One of the draws for me in getting Makus Empanadas are they appear to be baked and not fried (don't get me wrong, I like fried empanadas as well!) and honestly they remind me of mini-versions of my grandmother's homemade fruit turnovers in appearance (a good thing). I usually order these light pockets of tasty goodness with their chicken filling or their sweet corn filling version. Makus Empanadas was excellent. Five stars all around. They checked all the boxes for me: food, service, and value with nice touches sprinkled throughout. This is a quick, convenient, and delicious food option. Makus is pronounced "make us" as in "make us empanadas." I believe this location in Durham, in the Hope Valley Commons shopping center with Harris Teeter, was the first of what's now three locations. This original location opened in 2015 with the Morgan Street Food Hall (Raleigh, 2018) and Duke University Hospital locations coming after. This is a fast-casual restaurant with a polished look and sleek marketing/branding/design. The restaurant isn't very big and the menu is streamlined. During my visit, on the menu, there were 10 different kinds of empanadas ($2.75 each), chipa (Latin American cheese rolls, $3.25), a small handful of sides (most $1.75 each), two sauces, an "empadog" (hot dog wrapped in empanada dough, $2.95), sweets such as cochitos (dulce de leche and coconut cookie, $1.95 each), craft beer ($5 per serving) and wine ($6), and self-serve fountain drinks and tea. They also offered combo meals, party packs, and daily specials such as: * Monday and Friday: buy a dozen empanadas, get 3 free * Wednesday: 50% off all bottles of wine * Monday-Thursday 3-5pm (happy hour): get 2 empanadas + 1 sauce for $5 * Every day: get 4 empanadas + 1 bottle of wine for $21.95 Finally, they sold frozen empanadas and frozen chipa which you could bake at home. 12 frozen empanadas for $33 and 15 pieces of frozen chipa for $8.95. I went with Makus' Family Meal (appropriate for 2-3 adults, in my opinion) which came with 10 empanadas, 4 sides, and 2 sauces for $28.50. Since this was our first time having Makus, this allowed us (my wife and me) to try one of every empanada on the menu as well as all of the housemade sides and sauces. Here's what we got: 10 empanadas * Beef * Chicken * Pork Chimichurri * Pepperoni * Bacon & Cheese * Ham & Cheese * Onion & Cheese * Sweet Corn * Spinach * Veggie (zucchini, leek, onion, rice, spices) 4 Sides * Black beans and white rice (2) * Cole slaw * Spinach salad 2 Sauces * Chimichurri * Red Hot Each and every empanada tasted terrific. My wife and I independently concluded that all of the empanadas were equally enjoyable. Some flavors were more memorable than others, but that didn't diminish the quality nor satisfaction of the "less memorable" ones. For example, the empanadas that stick out in my mind were the pork chimichurri, ham & cheese, onion & cheese, and sweet corn, but empanadas like the beef, chicken, and spinach were just as tasty and gratifying. If I had to pick a least favorite empanada here, it'd be the pepperoni. It reminded me of a pizza-flavored Hot Pocket, which isn't a bad thing. The problem was there wasn't enough pepperoni/pepperoni flavor for me. Maybe it was just the particular empanada I had. The spinach empanada was like eating spanokopita (Greek spinach pie). At the end of the day, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the empanada choices on Makus' menu. They were all great. The ones with cheese (bacon, ham, onion) were rich and succulent. The beef, chicken, and pork chimichurri were meaty, tender, moist, and savory. The sweet corn and veggie packed more of a flavorful punch than I expected. The crispy, flaky dough wrappings were baked to perfection and generally, each empanada had the right proportions of ingredients (just take a look at my cross section pics). The empanadas were yummy enough on their own that no sauce was needed. In fact, I think the two sauces - both the chimichurri and the red hot - can overpower the flavors of the fillings inside each empanada. The sauces were very good though. The chimichurri was strong and garlicky while the red hot tasted like straight-up Tabasco. As for the sides, the black beans and white rice were money. It's basic Latin comfort food and Makus does it well. Their rice and beans also contain a little bit of peas, carrots, and corn. The cole slaw and spinach salad were more par for the course, but still, not bad. The slaw had coarsely-shredded green and red cabbage and carrots and was light on the mayo. The spinach salad contained dried cranberries, chopped walnuts, and what I believe was a strawberry vinaigrette salad dressing. Everything was fresh. I ordered and paid online using my phone, following the link on Makus' website. They used ChowNow for their online ordering platform. The entire process was easy and straightforward. My order was ready in less than 15 minutes. When I arrived at the restaurant, the server finalized assembly of my order, ensuring maximum freshness. I appreciated that each empanada had its own little code that was creased into the crust so that you could tell which empanada you were eating. It's definitely a clever way of figuring out who ordered what empanada when you order for large groups. The ones that I tried were beef, pork, chicken, and bacon and cheese. Overall, it was pretty bland. If it had a little more salt and seasoning, it would have transformed average to pretty good empanadas. The flavor of the crust definitely overpowered the flavors of the filling. The sauces were okay too, it was clear that the hot sauce was definitely just...some generic hot sauce that you can buy from the store, so the fact that you had to spend an extra 50 cents for a small plastic cup of hot sauce was a bit unfortunate. Tips to really enjoy this place: * Get the pork empanada and at least one of the cheese ones. * Dip empanada liberally in sauce * Pour remaining chimichurri on your beans and rice. * Or skip the side and get a fourth empanada. These are important, must-know tips. The first time I went here I was really underwhelmed -- the rice and beans were bland (all the sides are), the beef was meh, and I didn't feel with 3 empanadas I was really full enough. The second time, fully utilizing the sauces, was a revelation. I went back and decided to just order everything on the menu. I wanted to like this place, my husband and I were big eaters, I had just hit the gym, and I didn't want to be hungry. This was a happy mistake. The Pork Chimichurri was A-MAZ-ING. Think well-spiced, rich pulled pork with excellent herb and fat flavors. The beef (and onion -- they should label this beef and onion) was meh again, don't recommend highly. The ham and cheese is my favorite as a Southern pork and cheese lover (add hot sauce), and the bacon is good but tastes like breakfast. The pepperoni is a favorite if you love hot pockets (I do), but they are way better. But seriously, 2.5 for me, 4.5 for him, +beans and rice was PLENTY. We were both in carb comas and napped after this meal. I'll keep you updated on how the veggies taste (apparently you can heat and eat in the oven for just 5-10 minutes and voila!). You won't find a healthy option here, although the empanadas are baked never fried, it's still full of delicious breads, but it's quick and tasty. If you're headed here for a "full meal" you can pay $9.95 for a meal deal: three empanadas, one sauce (sauce is regularly an additional $.50), drink and one side (options: bag of chips, beans or rice). To breakdown the empanadas for you (regularly $2.50 for one) they are better in flavor then Sarah's Empanadas but smaller. About the same size as Calavela's but more 'ordinary'/traditional favors (sans free sauces). From the four I tried, the chicken was the tastiest (but also the hottest, could've made a difference). The chicken tasted a lot like the beef, but obviously different proteins. Both reminded me of my mothers Shepard pie recipe (minced onion, carrots and spices, no potatoes). Loved the cheesiness of the bacon and cheese and the onion and cheese was good. Good "breading" to filling ratio. Overall, Makus is a competitive option in the Empanadas marketplace but I don't see myself going for full meal. I think they are hurting themselves by not offering their sauces as a free option, something that could really enhance meal. Such yummy empanadas!! So many different flavors and so fresh! I got the meal- 3 empanadas, one side, one sauce, and a drink. The 3 that I got were beef, ham and cheese, and corn. The beef was actually my least favorite- I felt like it was a bit dry but dunking it into the chimichurri sauce helped. The ham and cheese was delicious and I ate the corn one last cause it's sweet- which was also delicious!! The chimichurri sauce was yummy but it is a tiny bit spicy. Their empanadas come fresh, hot and ready to eat! They are not fried and are always baked. They have a variety of meat and vegetarian options as well. They also offer chipa bread, which is a delicious bite-sized cheese bread. Along with their empanadas and chipa bread, Makus offers a variety of sides from beans to a spinach salad. Finally, don't forget their delicious chimichurri sauce! In addition to their delicious empanadas, Makus also offers friendly service. Their staff members were all smiling and welcoming as my boyfriend and I pondered at their menu deciding what to order. They even asked how we enjoyed the empanadas after hearing it was our first time. But most of all, I love the story behind Makus. There is a biography of the origin of Makus in the restaurant. Makus Empanadas was founded by three Argentinians, Hernan, Santiago, and Ricky who wanted to bring their love of Empanadas to America. More importantly, these three wanted to incorporate the strong sense of community that empanadas brought. When I ordered to go, my food was very hot when it arrived. Almost an uncomfortable hot when you're starving but your food is too hot to eat but of course you try it anyways. But I knew at least the food was fresh which is always a plus! My order came fast and I ordered two chicken empanadas and one beef. Both types had a very good flavor. I'm not an expert on empanadas and can't attest to the authenticity of them but I had no complaints. My favorite part of the entire meal with the order of cheese bread that I ordered with them. So good, I wanted more! My plate had a nice and clean presentation. Since this place is so close to my home, I will definitely be back. Ordered a large order for NYE, including some GF for a guest in our quaranteam. On the plus side, most of the empeñadas were fairly tasty. About half of the empeñadas were stamped wrong, though, and had different ingredients in them. That in and of itself wouldn't normally be a huge deal, but this morning our GF guest was having a reaction to something from the night before. Given the mix up with ingredients (and the fact that nothing else we had would have caused the issue--tortilla chips, homemade queso, etc), I would be VERY hesitant to order from them if you're GF. read more

I was underwhelmed by the food and the service here. The empanadas lacked flavor, but the sauce certainly helped. The sides were bland and the cheesy bread was pretty good but overpriced for the tiny portion. Big disappointment. read more
