If you're considering spinal decompression surgery, take it from a surgeon: you should seriously consider an endoscopic approach--provided you're in the hands of an expert. For those in the know, that expert in the Bay Area is Dr. Saqib Hasan. With Dr. Hasan what you get yourself is the same result as a traditional micro decompression (his data would even suggest a lower chance of re-occurence), but significantly less pain, and significantly faster recovery. I have had both procedures - so I know. I had previously undergone a traditional microdecompression at L4/L5 with great success, so when I learned I needed another procedure at L3/L4, I was initially skeptical that a newer, less invasive technique could deliver the same result. After meeting with Dr. Hasan, that doubt quickly faded. He took the time to explain the details of the endoscopic procedure, his extensive experience with it, and what to expect before and after surgery. His office was equally outstanding--responsive, organized, and easy to communicate with at every step. The outcome was exceptional. My symptoms resolved completely right after surgery, just as they had with my first operation, but this time the pain was far less and recovery dramatically faster. I needed no narcotic medication, was on my feet and active nearly 10 days earlier, and overall felt that I gained about three weeks of recovery time compared to my prior experience. Dr. Hasan treated me for a disc bulge (L5-S1) that was pressing against the nerve from my lower back to my foot. It was the most excruciating pain I've ever had. He treated me quickly first with a less invasive approach - an epidural. When that didn't give me relief, we moved to an endoscopic spine surgery. I suffered from chronic lower back pain for over 8 years due to severe spinal stenosis at L4-L5 and L5-S1. I truly thought I could "muscle through it" until I couldn't anymore. Interestingly, after I made my initial appointment, I learned that two close friends (one of them a surgeon) had both had successful spine surgery with Dr. Hasan. I also discovered that a lifelong orthopedic surgeon friend connected me with a spine surgeon who trained with Dr. Hasan and spoke very highly of him. I had also consulted with a neurosurgeon prior to making my final decision, and many doctors recommended fusion. All signs ultimately pointed to Dr. Hasan. Dr. Hasan is truly on the cutting edge and is considered one of the top endoscopic spine surgeons. He took the time to thoroughly review my case and walk me through two surgical options in depth, including a minimally invasive endoscopic decompression and a more extensive fusion, clearly explaining the risks, benefits, and long-term implications of each. He has a very holistic, patient-centered approach and genuinely allows you to make the decision that is best for you. I never once felt rushed or pressured. A few things to know going in: Be patient with scheduling. Dr. Hasan gives every patient his full attention and answers all questions, which means he sometimes runs behind - but it's because he truly cares. Endoscopic surgery is not covered by insurance. Dr. Hasan is very upfront about this. There is an out-of-pocket fee (mine was $7,000), though the hospital and other related costs were still covered by insurance as usual. He is in high demand. Appointments and surgery dates can be booked out, but if you get on the cancellation/on-call list, dates can move up- mine was moved up by two months. I am now 4 months post-op and back to my normal activities, including golf, biking, and working out with weights. I'm not sure how much I have to say except for this: After months of crushing and debilitating lower back pain, I made an appointment with Dr. Hasan. At the pitiful sight of me in that kind of pain they got me in fast. If you've read my other reviews, I know my way around Orthos... Hasan is the ONLY Dr. I will ever allow to work on my lumbar region. He is knowledgeable, open to new therapies, personable and competent. Did I have to wait in the waiting room a bit? Yes and that's a good sign. If that many people want him then there are reason for it. He looked at the xrays and MRI's and diagnosed the condition. He laid out his treatment plan and offered me stem cell therapy as part of the surgery. Knowing the results and out comes I jumped at it. I had to pay a little over $2k and it was worth every dime. 4.5 weeks after surgery I got a delivery of two full pallets of slabs of connecticut blue stone pavers the size of doors. 4.5 weeks after surgery I handled, cut, did the underlayment, placed and laid 7,000lbs of this stone, by hand, alone. My wife wanted to murder me. Doc had a fit... But there I was, 62 at the time and the job had to be done and because of him, it was. His work was soooo good that I was able to do that. because his work was that goddamn good and cutting edge I had sustained zero damage to my body after the stupid decision to lay that flagstone.. The outcomes for lumbar surgery can be iffy at best. It is a difficult area. Dr. Hasan is a champ. My back yard is testament to that. Go see him... wait if you must... he is worth it. I don't know what other people's issues were with him... he is a great guy and a damn great surgeon. read more

I had spinal cord compression from a bulging disc at C6-C7 from a car accident on August 2nd 2024. I did research Dr. Hasan and he still does extensive training and is the first doctor to perform robotic surgeries here. He has a very skilled hand and did a wonderful job on my neck surgery. My arms and hands hurt so bad and had horrible neck pain. Numbness and tingling into fingers and arms I had also. After surgery those went away. You could barely see my scar after only 2 weeks of post opp. I included pictures that show the dates of each. I had a nurse say that Dr. Hasan has a skilled hand and his work was brilliant. I have had two spine surgeries in my life. The first was performed as an open procedure in 2009 to address a disc herniation and stenosis at L3/L4. The surgery was done at UCSF by one of the most highly respected spinal neurosurgeons in the US. This past year, I developed similar issues at L4/L5 that necessitated a discectomy and laminectomy -- the same procedures done about 15 years ago at UCSF at L3/L4. I believe that it is critically important to do extensive due diligence before having a major surgical procedure, and I was aware of significant advances in endoscopic spine surgery. Unfortunately, most orthopedic and neuro spinal surgeons lack the requisite training to perform procedures such as discectomies, laminectormies and fusions endoscopically. These procedures require extensive, highly-specialized training and experience utilizing endoscopic instrumentation. Most spine surgeons trained in traditional, open procedures don't have the time, nor the economic incentives to undertake the training needed to perform endoscopic spine surgery. As a result, most of the surgeons trained in these procedures have done so during their spinal surgery fellowship programs in the last 5-7 years. Dr. Hasan is one of the leading advocates for endoscopic spine surgery in the US, and frequently lectures to other surgeons on the benefits of learning endoscopic surgical techniques for the procedures that they've traditionally done via an open approach. During my first consult with Dr. Hasan, I found him to be friendly, empathetic, honest in his assessment of my condition, and very helpful in scheduling me as quickly as possible for surgery. The benefits to patients are significant -- minimal tissue disruption, minimal post-operative pain, less surgical trauma and much faster recovery times. I was incredibly lucky to find Dr. Hasan. I have been dealing with back pain for over 20 years. When doing research into a doctor, I had two different medical professionals refer me to Dr. Hasan. My chiropractor said that don't look for a doctor who has been doing the same thing for his entire career but look for a younger doctor who has been taught the newer technologies. I had the minimally invasive back surgery in February 2025. I had a spinal fusion in my L4/L5 and the removal of the 10mm bulging disc. With the smaller incisions, my recovery was very quick. After over 15 years of pain back due to a fracture in one of my vertebra, I have no more nerve pain! I was walking within hours of the surgery and my surgery was out patient! I met Dr. Sagib Hasan for the first time in 2024. For many years I was suffering with low back pain. I had about ten back fusion surgeries. In 2024 severe neuro pain appeared. Dr. Hasan made two laparoscopic neurosurgeries on the left and on the right side in September and November 2024. The procedures removed my pain but not completely. I made a new patient appointment to see Dr. Hasan with Golden State Orthopedics to diagnose my ongoing lower back pain. I was brought back for my appointment 1hour later than the scheduled appointment time. An X-ray was taken and I was put in an exam room to wait another 25 minutes only to have Dr. Hasan's assistant come in to say that he was running behind and that she would be the one to see me. After THE ASSISTANT diagnosed that my issue was degenerative disc, SHE prescribed physical therapy and a follow up with HER in 6 weeks. I asked if I would be seeing Dr. Hasan at the follow up appointment; she said no and that if I needed surgery, I would see him. I guess my little back issue wasn't severe enough to ever warrant being seen by Dr. Hasan himself unless the prospect of surgery arose. I told her that I was very disappointed to not even get to see the Doctor as a new patient or guaranteed to see him for the follow up after PT. She was kind and understanding and replied that she could see if he could come in to talk to me but I declined because after waiting for so long to be seen, I had time to look at his reviews on Yelp/Google and saw that he could be very rude and dismissive and I had already had enough frustration for the day. UPDATE: Golden State Orthopedics has contacted me after Dr. Hasan's office reached out to them to make them aware of the situation. It is with my utmost pleasure to recommend, and have recommended Dr Saqib Hasan and his team PA Lester Ma, and surgery scheduler- Yolanda Cruz. They are 5 stars in my book. My first two surgeries (2024) were laparoscopic and minimally invasive. His incisions were on my left side of my back and were very small, just enough for an endoscope . It was completed at a same day surgery center in Freemont. I healed and recovered quickly, My last spinal surgery with Dr. Hasan was on May 6th and 7th (2025) at San Ramon Regional Medical Center. It was quit extensive, but I have pulled through better then I went in! I was referred to him by another orthopedic surgeon due to Dr. Hasan's expertise with minimally invasive endoscopic surgeries. On my first visit, he conducted an assessment of the problem and made a treatment plan. He was enthusiastic and willing to take on my rather complex case. He showed me confidence and compassion along with trustworthy guidance on what needed to happen. His FNP conducted a preop appt to provide info about the procedure & follow up instructions. Dr Hasan told me "Like it really is". He was straight up and informative all the way. Even if I didn't want to hear it. If I had an appt with PA Lester, he would step in to say hello and answer any questions. Very thoughtful. It made me feel like I wasn't a number, the team knew by face and was cordial to me. All in all, this was an amazing experience through and through! When I was in excruciating pain, PA Lester Ma, was able to get a hold of Dr Hasan and we had a three-way phone conversation re my pain. The issue was resolved on the phone as Dr Hasan told Lester to order/send in a prescription to help with pain. The Result -It definitely helped. However, I knew it was just to hold me over, surgery was needed to permanently fix the spine and nerves pressing on it. Yolanda did a great job of listening. I recall babbling on about my pain to her. She worked very hard to get me scheduled and I eventually was able to get me in for surgery pretty quickly because another patient cancelled. She provided a wealth of information on the steps I needed, such as an ekg, lab work and clearance by PCP. She set up pre and post op visits as well. Dr. Hasan performed quit an extensive surgery on my lower spine. On May 6th he performed a Spine lumbar anterior (front) side surgery for L3-S1. On May 7th he performed a Lumbar spine posterior (back) Laminectomy and fusion. It was a very tough recovery (still recovering) but well worth it. After all I had stomach and back incisions, who wouldn't be in pain - even hard to sneeze, laugh and even get up to the bathroom. The spasms stopped and pain that shot down my left leg was minimal at first. Week 1 and 2 were extremely difficult. I was impressed with the help and support of the OT and PT services at San Ramon Valley Reg Med Ctr. The pain was definitely there but they pushed me daily to get out of bed and walk as well as a goal to complete ADL's, etc. After a few days I actually looked forward to them coming in to work with me so that I could improve and go home. Dr Hasan has an excellent PA- Lester Ma. He had seen me in clinic and was also present at all my surgeries. He too is very knowledgeable, kind and caring. On one visit was able to show me about my back brace and how to improve wearing of it since it was so uncomfortable, as well as a better (or different) ways to bend and stretch with one knee up and one down - kind of like as a lunge. Now, at 9 weeks later, I can honestly say that I see progress and a "I believe "I can do this attitude". Things are definitely looking up. The team was great at keeping me optimistic during very difficult times. At my last visit I had x-rays and he stated all the hardware was in place. Dr Hasan pulled up some images to compare and explain what he was seeing - Progress! It was obvious to me on my first visit back in the summer of 2024, that he enjoys how he can help others with less invasive procedures. This has been something I have been looking forward to for quite a few years as my quality of life slowly diminished to sitting in my living room after word day after day. My experience with Golden State Ortho and Dr. Hasan and his team in particular has been quite disappointing and therefore I cannot trust Dr. Hasan with such an important matter as care for my spine. Here's a rundown of my experience working with Dr. Hasan and his team. Patient beware! January 23: Dr. Hasan was 1 hour 45 minutes late for our appointment. The appointment lasted approximately 10 minutes, and did not afford me any time to even process the information he quickly gave me to ask any follow up questions.  January 23: advised by the receptionist at Golden State Ortho clinic to use the patient portal for communication, I sent a comprehensive email to Dr. Hasan with follow up questions. To this date, that has never been answered.  February 6: called Golden State Ortho to discuss medication refill and to talk with someone in Dr. Hasan's office. Kept on hold for more than 30 minutes before I had to disconnect the call.   February 6: spoke with Dr. Hasan's PA and sent him a direct email with my follow up questions to Dr. Hasan. He shared he would answer these the next day.  Followed up on February 13 (no response) and again on February 19 (finally received a phone call). At that time, the PA stated he could not answer any of my questions.   February 13: Sequoia Surgery Center called to confirm my upcoming appointment, and states a check in time 2 hours after my booked appointment. When I shared that this seemed incorrect, the person on the other end said I should "check with the doctor's office." I then followed up with the scheduler at Dr. Hasan's office, who had me listed on the schedule at the original time 2 hours ahead of what Sequoia told me. I asked which schedule I should follow, and the scheduler on the other end interrupted my questions and responded rudely to "just show up."  February 15: at my scheduled procedure at Sequoia Surgery Center the nurse shared that Dr. Hasan would come speak with me before the procedure. He never did. When I arrived in the procedure room he was busy checking his phone. Did not speak to me except to say, "You're the hardest one I've done all day."  I find all these moments of communication or more clearly lack of communication to be disrespectful to patients and highly unprofessional. Dr. Hasan's bedside manner and lack of respect for his patients' time is bad enough, but to encounter bad communication from multiple people at Golden State Ortho is truly frustrating. There is not even a general email address listed on the Golden State Ortho website, all calls are routed through a call center. This is all proof that Golden State Ortho is disreputable and not a trustworthy organization and certainly one I cannot trust my care to, especially for something so important as a spinal injury. read more

Dr. Hasan is the best surgeon and doctor. I have been in pain for as long as I can remember. I couldn't walk, sit or run or do anything without severe pain in my back and leg and every orthopedic doctor I visited before him said I need to manage the pain as a surgery on my spine might not help. I learnt to live with the pain and almost lost hope till I met Dr. Hasan. He suggested 'endoscopic spine surgery' to relieve my pain. I was skeptical at first but he was so confident that it would work. I took a chance and I am so happy that I did. The day I had the surgery, I noticed a huge difference in my pain. It was almost gone. A few days in, I woke up to no pain at all! I did not have any pain in my leg or back! I couldn't believe it myself. I was so happy, I had tears in my eyes! I was pain free! He is one of the very few doctors capable of performing this surgery and THE best in the bay area. Period. He is truly exceptional. He really cares for his patients and goes above and beyond for them. And Lester, his physician assistant is an amazing extension to Dr. Hasan. I am so happy to have found him and his team. Endoscopic spine surgery is not a field you want anyone operating on you. Dr Hasan is a true expert in this field and he really helped my mom. She had shooting pain down her legs and it is completely gone after the surgery! He was very open to non-invasive approaches and only recommended endoscopic spine surgery when all else failed. Most importantly, this is a doctor who will respond to your emails personally; prescribe drugs over the weekend and after hours when you are in need, call you personally when you request by email. He was there for my mom's recovery every step of the way! Most orthopedic surgeons have an ego that is not tolerable by many; Dr Hasan is the complete opposite! From Larry Petersen On June 12,2024, I awoke with what turned out to be severe sciatica requiring surgery. I could barely move without screaming pain. I immediately made an appointment to visit my wonderful chiropractor and had 4 visits with her until it was determined that I needed to visit a spine specialist. Armed with my X-ray and MRI taken in the 2 weeks since this started, I visited Lester Ma, Physician's Asst. to Dr. Hasan. My intention was to schedule a cortisone injection to stop the pain. He immediately determined that my disc was intruding to the vertebral foramin, causing pressure against the nerve and that a cortisone injection would only be temporary. He suggested a minimally invasive nano-tool microdiscectomy operation to remove the part of the disc which was protruding and also apply cryopressed amniotic membrane stem cells to enhance healing. The latter part of the procedure with the stem cells is not covered by Medicare/Blue Shield, but my wife had had similar treatment using umbilical cord stem cells (called Wharton's jelly) to her arthritic shoulders with great success, so the $2000 cash out-of-pocket was well worth trying. Dr. Hasan happened to be in the office that day and we consulted with him. He tried his very best to schedule this operation for a few days later (July 1) since I was in such excruciating pain. This turned out not to work for us, but his back-up date of July 17 would. On July 17, I had the procedure at 10:30 a.m., was recovered by 4 pm that day and could walk out of the surgery center if insurance protocol hadn't dictated that a wheelchair to the car was required. I was prescribed pain medication after the surgery which I followed to the letter, so I don't know if I would have been pain free without them. Regardless, I felt no pain, the surgery site was only about 1/2" square at most and was completely healed in 4 weeks. I have many friends who have had back surgery and their recovery was long, arduous and left them with long scars and lack of mobility. I wore a special back-brace for 6 weeks. I live in a 3-story home and was up and down all flights of stairs immediately following the operation. I followed all suggested protocols give me in booklet form and also those suggested by Lester Ma and Dr. Hasan. I will still be very careful but I am certain that this operation was a complete unmitigated success. It was so easy and painfree. I would recommend the discectomy operation, the amniotic membrane and particularly Dr. Hasan with 5 Gold Stars for an excellently masterful job!!! read more

Dr. Hasan and PA Lester are absolutely amazing!! I was suffering from an aggressive pinched nerve (C5 - C6). From the beginning of my first appointment and to this present date, they both have been extremely attentive, compassionate, supportive and caring. Both doctors attempted every possible treatment to relieve my pain and ultimately I did need surgery. I was so impressed with Dr. Hasan, there was zero pressure on having surgery and I was offered three separate types of surgery. I've never met a Doctor and PA who actually cares about his patients so much. Dr. Hasan and PA Lester's entire team not only makes you feel absolutely comfortable throughout the entire experience, but the follow up after surgery felt personal. Dr. Hasan is an amazing surgeon. He performed endoscopic spinal surgery on my cervical spine on June 2023. He replaced 3 of my discs with titanium discs and added a plate and 4 screws to assist with fusion in my neck. My incision looks amazing at the 3 month mark as he used a horizontal approach. It looks like a neck crease. Dr. Hasan and his PA Lester have been very responsive to any and all my concerns during recovery. I would highly recommend him to anyone who needs neck surgery. He spent 5 minutes with me after I waited an hour and a half. Did not explain what is on the MRI. No prescription for my pain on my shoulder, sent me home with a promise that someone will contact me when they find a doctor to give me steroid injection. No one called. No follow up. Dr. Hasan and his team have been great so far in helping me with my neck problem. I was referred to him by Dr. Pitcher (who's amazing!) Dr. Hasan reviewed my MRI in detail with me. He wanted me to see what's going on! He was all...'do you see what I'm telling you? Ok, keep remembering that, that's what it should look like, now look at this...' One time I looked away from the screen he was showing me, to look at the print out explaining the MRI. He was all...don't look at that! I was all...OK! He wanted me to be on the same page with him. I remember saying "understood!" when he said 'don't look at that, look at what I showing you.' He's passionate about what he does. He's serious about helping people. He next performed a physical examination and asked questions to continue his efforts in coming to a diagnosis. My best recollection of his communication to me: "It's my responsibility to tell you need surgery..." I actually wasn't blown away hearing this. I mean I've been suffering for a long time. I'm glad to know that #1 I have a problem identified, and #2 Dr. Hasan is leading the way with a way to address it. The scribe, Amy! OMG! so nice! She spoke with me to provide some details, like formal name of my diagnosis, name of procedure, some of what to expect, next steps -- and she even wrote down her email address for me, said just email me if you have any questions that come up. Lastly, the scheduler, rockstar! That's Yolanda. I mean how does she keep all of the details straight? She knows all of my details, plus she doing all of the others and I can barely keep my details straight (actually, I can). Yolanda has been real nice too. Next, I'm looking forward to meeting Physician Assistant, Lester Ma for my pre-op appointment. Surgery is scheduled for early November. I had suffered from chronic back pain for three years. I tried cortisone shots, physical therapy, acupuncture, etc., before being referred to Dr. Hasan for consultation. Dr. Hasan and his staff were consistently supportive, informative, and professional. Dr. Hasan offers excellent educational materials and his staff promptly responded to any questions I had throughout the process. Two days after surgery I suddenly realized that my chronic back pain had disappeared. I had an appointment with this doctor for first time He came one hour & 15 min late without making any comment about why benign late. I am sitting in front of him & he is looking at my chart & asking the Nurse question about my health rather than asking me directly so I can answer all question that he has. The funny thing about this doctor is that he think he is the most smart person in the room. He has very shitty Attitude. To me it does not matter if you are # 1 in your class & how good was your grade or where you graduated, how you deal with the patient is important. They made another appointment for me, but i never went back. They keep calling me for new MRI ,I told them I need to talk to doctor before i go back. BUT DOCTOR NEVER CALLED ME BACK. I am so glad I didn't do my back fusion surgery with this doctor. read more

Two weeks ago I had an endoscopic lumbar disectomy performed by Dr. Hasan. I am almost 100% feeling better thanks to him and have barley no pain today at all compared to the horrific pain I was dealing with for at least 6 months prior to my surgery . I was on so many pain meds it was getting out of control . My pain lasted all day every day . Dr. Hasan and his amazing staff worked on getting me in to surgery super fast and today I can thankfully say all I need now is a couple of Tylenol to ease my pain . Recovery has been easy thanks to the minimally invasive approach Dr. Hasan takes . I can not say enough about this guy !! The office staff has always been amazing and the Fremont surgery center where my surgery was performed was top notch as well !! Highly recommend! I saw Dr. Hasan to discuss severe back pain I've struggled with for a few years. After explaining my symptoms, he suggested I get an X-ray and an MRI. During my follow-up visit to discuss the results, Dr. Hasan clearly explained my disc degeneration diagnosis and gave me options for healing. He devised a detailed treatment plan that included acupuncture, yoga, and strength training. It's been six weeks since my visit, and I feel so much better and have gotten so much stronger.
