We decided to meet on a Friday after we were both done work. I made a bunch of suggestions. My first one was this Copper Branch in Bowmanville, which is our midpoint between Peterborough and Markham. She is vegan. We are both huge fans of Copper Branch. We were both game. I needed to pick up a package from the post office before heading to Bowmanville. With the Christmas craziness at my local post office, the wait was long. By the time I was done, I needed to take highway 401 to get to Bowmanville. I was late by five minutes, which is uncharacteristic of me. I also prefer using backroads heading eastbound. It was not meant to be on this evening. Luckily, my friend is understanding. She got there early and got a table for us. There is plenty of parking in this huge plaza. Copper Branch is across from Planet Fitness. I parked and walked in. This Copper Branch is the largest one that I have ever set foot in. It's spacious and cheerful. I found my friend and sat down. We caught up with our lives since we last got together in over 2.5 hours. We stayed until closing time. At Copper Branch, we are used to ordering at the counter and getting our food served. This eatery works a bit differently. It's full table service. We got menus. Everything we ordered got served to us. Nice! My friend and I are so similar. Without even consulting each other beforehand, we got the same things: - Poutine - Nachos I deviated by getting a peppermint hot chocolate. She got water. My hot chocolate came out first. It was foamy at the top and creamy. The peppermint was cheerful, but not as strong as I had hoped. Still, it was yummy and I'd get it again. We both haven't dined at Copper Branch since we ate at the now-closed Whitby location. She craved coming here because her local one in Peterborough had closed, too. The poutine was larger than we had both remembered it to be. It was comforting and yummy. I wish that the cheese melted a bit better, but it's a hit-or-miss thing with vegan cheese. I have never had their nachos served in a bowl before. In the past, it would be on a lined cookie sheet. I liked the old method better. Having nachos served in the bowl made a lot of chips soggy with the salsa over them at the bottom. The chips weren't crunchy. They were still delicious, but they need to be on a flat surface, and not as if you're having chili with nacho chips to scoop it out. We paid at the counter. My friend got some dessert for her boyfriend, who has quite the sweet tooth. We both got pumpkin pie slices. I had it the following day. It was yummy. I particularly loved the amount of nutmeg used it in. I paid using a credit card. It was a seamless transaction. It does get a bit expensive eating here. My food was just shy of $40 with taxes and a tip. We both used the washroom on separate occasions during our dining experience. Each one is a single stall. The one that I was in was clean and stocked well. I love this place. There are some minor improvements needed with the nachos, but the quality is there. From the moment I walked in to pick up my order, the entire place looked dirty and uninviting. The restaurant gave off the impression that cleanliness and basic standards were not a priority, which immediately made me uncomfortable. Unfortunately, the food was even worse. My chicken was raw in the middle, making it completely inedible. Serving undercooked chicken is unacceptable and raises serious concerns about food safety. After seeing the condition of my meal, there was no way I was going to risk eating it. To make matters worse, the service was terrible. The two women working when I came in were rude, unfriendly, and seemed completely uninterested in providing even basic customer service. Instead of feeling welcomed, I felt like I was inconveniencing them simply by being there. I gave this restaurant a second chance hoping my previous bad experience was a fluke, but this visit was somehow even worse. Between the dirty appearance of the restaurant, the rude service, and being served raw chicken, I can confidently say I will never return. Absolutely disgusting. One server in the entire restaurant, and he was also the bartender. Too much for only one person to be able to manage. By the time half of us were able to place our drink orders, the other half had already ordered and been served their drinks. Caesars were mostly ice, with very little "Caesar". Two of us were excited to order liver, bacon, and onions as we rarely see it on menus. Plates arrived with liver, (garlic?) mashed potatoes, one piece of broccoli, one piece of cauliflower, and extremely undercooked carrots that neither of us could eat as they were so hard. There was only a very passing acquantance with onions, with only a couple of visible bits of onion in the gravy on my plate. Both plates were delivered with steak knives. My slices were very thin and extremely tough. When you can barely manage to cut through a thin piece of liver with a steak knife, that's a problem. The woman beside me, who had also ordered liver, thoughly enjoyed hers, and said it was tender and delicious. I will agree with "delicious", as I couldn't fault the flavour. Mine, however, was far from being tender. I had to fight to cut through it, even with the steak knife. Everyone else seemed to enjoy their meal. Not sure I would try Railside again if ever in the area.

Salad, entree and dessert were all perfectly prepared and nicely plated. Their small serving crew were all amazing, providing a 3 course lunch to over 100 theatre-bound patrons in under 90 minutes. We made a reservation for 4 people at 5pm on a Friday night just to be safe. 5pm is a little early for dinner but the restaurant was still about a quarter full when we arrived. The inside of the restaurant is what I would describe as a comfortable modern cafe. There was a lot of artwork on the walls that featured local artists and that you could purchase. We were all pretty hungry from our travels so we started the meal off with the Chicken and Waffles. There are only 3 pieces for this appetizer so one of our couples split a piece which turned out okay. It was a tasty bite sized morsel. My main was an alfredo with only the good stuff - chicken, mushrooms, and onions in a creamy sauce on top of perfectly cooked fettuccine. It looked like a deceptively small portion but I actually needed help finishing it. I stole bites off the plates of some of the other dishes in my party. The fries from the burger special were a real winner. They were thick cut, some with the skins still on them, and crispy at the ends. My definition of an addictive fry! I was pretty liberal when sampling the pasta special which was a sous vide lamb on top of a homemade gnocchi in a ragu. The lamb was really mouth watering. It had a subtle taste of lamb but it was really meaty like a steak. The gnocchi had varying levels of crispiness and had a great contrast in texture. Finally I was able to sneak a piece of the lamb shank which was also to die for. It was fall off the bone and so incredibly tender. The service was really wonderful that night too. Our server checked on us multiple times through the meal and made sure we always had everything we needed. On our way out it felt like we were thanked by the entire kitchen and bar staff as we walked by. A lovely dining experience to check out if you're ever in Bowmanville!
