Carrot cake - owner's heirloom recipe.
Tim B.

While the prices of food have skyrocketed, we still manage to eat out occasionally, especially if we find good value for the money. We were exploring Cobourg, ON, and found this restaurant. The lunch menu is predominantly breakfasts, and sandwiches/wraps/tartines (open faced fried sandwiches). Very delicious vegetarian tartine and roast beef tartine which included fries and coleslaw at very reasonable prices and generous portions. We broke down and ordered a chocolate and orange gluten-free mousse cake, and a favourite of mine-carrot cake. Both were fabulous - all made in-house! The ambiance is pleasant, if a bit labyrinthine and the staff efficient and friendly. We will be back!

The Canadian Burger

Ordered the Canadian Burger and it was very good and a good size portion. Really enjoyed the burger. Freshly made bun. Definitely would come Back here again nice patio settings where you can just eat and people wash.

Virtually no vegan options, and the one I did get to order was just okay. I know small towns and classic diner style restaurants don't always have a lot of vegetarian/vegan options, but I would like to see more than 1 dish. Home fries were justtttt cooked, not very crispy. Definitely not the best I've had. The salad was good, but lacking a diversity of flavour. That said, my friends got the classic breakfast and the big breakfast and they really loved it! It is nice that every single thing on the menu is made in house, including the bread. Service was incredible though!

Chicken pazzano with flatbread

Huge portions and amazing food! Service can be a bit slow but the food definitely makes up for it! We were in Cobourg for a couple of days and we're super glad we decided to pick this place to have breakfast. Their chicken pazzano was very flavourful and the flatbread really sealed the dish together - it was a light dish and I didn't leave feeling like I couldn't do anything for the rest of the day. I didn't order the farmhouse platter, but tried bits and pieces of everything on there. The pancakes were light, fluffy, and not overly sweet, and the meats and eggs were cooked perfectly ! The prices were also very decent for what you're getting. Overall a very enjoyable experience and I would definitely go back if I'm ever in the area again!

Amazing service amazing food. Good comfort food and a homey atmosphere. Large portions and friendly happy staff. Went for lunch on busy Canada day and regardless of how busy they were they always smiled and laughed. Food was hot and we didn't wait long at all to be seated or to get our food. Their homemade bread is an absolute must have! Will definitely be back!

I came here twice in two days while visiting my dear ol' mumsy in Cobourg. I wanted to switch it up, but my daughter was big on their pancakes, and why mess with a good thing. The Buttermilk Cafe is clearly beloved, was packed on both a Friday and a Saturday. Luckily, the staff is sweet and speedy, and we were seated in a comfy booth quickly. Again, both days she got the pancakes, where as I played around in their sandwich section. All of their dishes are large and made as much as possible from local foods. I recommend their very impressive club sandwich. If you're looking for a reasonably priced, diner-style restaurant with lots of choices, you'll feel blessed at Buttermilk.

The Buttermilk Cafe is good for breakfast/brunch if you are visiting Cobourg area. Staff is friendly and welcoming! The decor is cozy with a small town country vibe. I would highly recommend their homemade pancakes! So fluffy and light! They also make their French Toast from house baked bread! We shared: Small French Toast with Syrup ($5.99) Pancake and Sausage Bennie ($10.79) Constant free refills of coffee! Come to The Buttermilk Cafe for a taste of the small town charm and hospitality!

Travelling along highway 2 and wanted breakfast in the Cobourg area. Other Helpers pointed to this cafe, so stopped in. Simple and cute country decor is effective in the space. A smiling and cheerful greeting welcomed us. The building they are housed in is obviously older - you see this reflected in the bathrooms and restaurant layout. Nice menu choices for breakfast. I ordered the Fruit and Berry Combo. Sitting here waiting for breakfast and all I can think is "it smells so good in here". Breakfast came quickly - and all looked fabulous. Good news, it all tastes as good as it looks! I'm in breakfast heaven. Would I recommend: yes Would I return: yes
