The Edison location overbooks and has patients waiting in their waiting rooms for 1/2hour to 45minutes. When asked why they don't notify their patients of this inconvenience ahead of time the excuse given is that they never get seen in Dr's offices at the scheduled time of their appointments. Just know their bill to me insurance was $550 dollars for a standard eye exam . The exam was done by their clerical support and then the doctor reviews your test results. The front desk reception said they could not provide any info, could not indicate what the initial charge might be. Seems wrong that they could not give even a range of pricing for their services. Reception will make appointments and say or do nothing else. We asked to see the billing manager who after a 15 minute talk, could not indicate costs. The clerical type who did the test was courteous but said he could not answer any questions about the 3 tests- the glaucoma test, picture of eye internals, peripheral test. He was inexperienced doing the peripheral vision testing machine and the doctor said I must return later to be retested. We know he is not the doctor but could have given a 1 minute explanation of the different tests. He begrudingly said very little when questioned. After the tests, we were directed to a sitting room, sat for 35 minutes, waiting with 3 other patients to see the doctor. We saw perhaps 3 or 4 clerical types doing the actual testing, only one doctor there, dr. Laila Doctor Laila Colicchio spent 10 minutes explaining the test results, clear, concise and very capable. The doctor does none of the actual tesing, only interprets the test results. Had not been there for 6 years, miss Dr Santamaria, no longer there. Will not return. You can perhaps get a proper eye exam, although my examiner did not do the peripheral vision machine test correctly, the doctor saying I must return again to repeat the test -per dr Laila. Clearly they maximize the number of patients seen to get the most $550 per patient. There were 6 patients waiting when I arrived, 8 waiting when I left. I had an appointment and waited for over two hours past my appointment time, waiting room was small and unaccommodating.

My husband I have been going to Santamaria Eye Center for years and have never been disappointed in the care we received. Dr. Darvin diagnosed me with Glaucoma and has been treating me for it for years. I have cataracts and recently he suggested I have the cataract surgery. I never realized how bad my vision was and now I can see better than ever and can drive again with no problem. The colors are so vibrant. He recently took me off the drops that I had been taken because my pressure has returned to normal. I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Darvin and consider myself a very lucky patient. The doctor was nice enough, but first you have to run the gauntlet of the terrible, slow, rude, and inept receptionist staff. Not worth it. Unless you enjoy the DMV experience so much, and you think that is what's missing from your eye care. Our appointment was for 3:30. We came early and already had our forms from online filled out. We were not seen until I complained over an hour later. The receptionist said the appointment times are estimates and people should be prepared to wait up to 90 minutes before being seen. Ha! Then the doctor tried to back pedal saying they were short staffed. Reading the reviews now, I can see its typical for this office. Life is too short to spend time or money at places like this. I accompanied my son to this eye center after getting an appointment for his eye problem that required immediate attention. The person who answered the phone was efficient and polite , that was the first good sign after spending several hours on the phone contacting doctors offices who supposedly take his insurance. I am happy to report that the office staff, the office itself ,and the visit with Dr. Darvin was a positive experience as well. Had an appointment yesterday March 22, 2021. I have a rare lung disease and I'm waiting on a double lung transplant. I have a portable oxygen machine which I don't care what anybody says on the commercials there for shit the batteries run out in like an hour. So explain to the girl who told me they were a little behind and it would be like an hour an hour and a half wait. I started to panic because if I ran out of air I was totally screwed. I did have to wait but maybe 20 minutes, the office staff and Dr. Parisi were so accommodating to me words can't express my appreciation. I usually go to the Perth Amboy office, this time I decided to try the Edison office as it is near my other dr I'm seeing, exam was fine it was with who I usually see in PA, it's getting my glasses, was measured, 3 weeks later they come in, but the bi focal line was to high, had to redo, 2-3 weeks they came back, this time during the fitting, she snapped the ear part off, wasn't paying attention to what she was do while multitasking with another patient, now another 2-3 weeks,& still don't have my glasses & both mistakes were by the same lady... First, I have to admit I've been going to Dr Santamaria for my eye maintenance for years. He's not only my eye doctor, but a friend and mentor. However, my review will be objective and honest. The office is in the back of the Menlo Park Mall, which can be confusing to find. But once you do it, you'll never forget how to get there. (It's the big red building in the back). Take the elevator to the 4th floor and make a right. Now you're there. The staff is friendly, bi-lingual and very professional. They love conversing and making you feel comfortable. They're thorough with making sure they cover all angles of your health, especially your vision. Dr Santamaria is always so charming and friendly. He's like an exceptional host in a wonderful home. His examination of your eyes is complete and as comfortable as possible. He's very knowledgable regarding your eyes from all perspectives. Besides check-ups, I've had lazor surgery in his facility that saved my vision years ago. I'll never forget how on a Labor Day weekend he got me into his office to have my partial loss of vision in my right eye checked immediately and corrected. That's a great doctor. Problem with billing. Insurance company requires letter of medical necessity in order to pay claim fully. After multiple requests to this office, the office manager stated they "do not write letters of medical necessity." This refusal to write the letter as requested has caused me to be stuck paying a bill that would otherwise be paid by my health insurance. I will never return to this office due to their refusal to write a letter of medical necessity as per my request. read more

After my eye exam I received 2 printed prescriptions for contact lenses from Dr. Colicchio. When I went to fill my prescription elsewhere, I was asked why I had two prescriptions for my right eye? I chose to drive all the way back to Edison on account that I knew it would take DAYS to finally reach someone at this location by phone. (I've had issues with them before) I waited 20 min but had other errands so the lady behind the window said she'd have it by at least 1pm and that I should really reconsider leaving. My errands took longer than expected so I returned at 3pm. It still had not been done. Again, , I had to wait another 20 min for Dr Colicchio to rewrite it. Not only did she hand me the WRONG PRESCRIPTION again, it took 2 days for someone to get back to me because they DO NOT HAVE A DIRECT NUMBER because for some odd reason you have to go through their Perth Amboy office and leave messages there and I didn't feel like driving over there a second time! Dr Santamaria is the best!Had cataract surgery I do not need glasses for distance..had bad night driving its a miracle.I only need glasses for reading...cheaters work fine.Staff is great the only negative is that it is very challenging to get a live person on the phone....sometimes you get the answering service even if the office is open! read more

I went here for the first time, thinking that they would be better than LensCrafters (where I went before this). Also went because they took my insurance. Some LensCrafters take it and some don't. LensCrafters gave a more thorough eye exam. Santamaria did not test for colorblindness or peripheral vision & found a problem with my eyes (besides glasses) but didn't bother to give me any information about it. I was a little disappointed. They claim to have the latest equipment, but LensCrafters had equipment that eliminated having to dilate the eyes & they did not. All of the people were friendly and courteous. My mother has been a patient at Santamaria Eye Center for well over 7+ years. Dr Santamaria performed her cataract surgery and never had an issue. She is currently under the care of Dr Darvin for her macular degeneration. Dr Darvin and the entire staff of the eye center are professional, respectful, efficient and very caring for their patients. There were complications after Dr. Santamaria performed cataract surgery two years ago. He told me that my eye was improving which wasn't true. Now I have to go to another ophthalmologist every three months and take eye drops to prevent my eyes from becoming red, tearing, and sensitive to light. read more

After many years of being a patient at both their Edison and Perth Amboy locations I switched doctors as I was tired of the terrible, slow, rude, unprofessional and inept receptionist staff. It is impossible to get clear and respectful answer from their staff. Messages go unanswered for days and you have to constantly follow up with very poor results. The staff has no qualms about arguing with the patients and show zero respect. Whatever happened to the patient is always right and proper customer service? The doctors and managers should have better control of their staff and be more concerned with providing better service, after all, the staff represents them. I would never recommend anyone to this office again and will encourage my family members and friends who still utilize Santamaria's services to seek better doctors/offices. read more

Took my dad for an appointment in the Edison office which is large and beautiful. As a first time patient struggling with double vision, we found the check in process was quick and organized. We had no wait and was seen by a physician assistant, LuzB., who was attentive, patient, kind and thorough. I can't say enough about her wonderful "bedside manner!" All the staff was organized, polite and helpful. The doctor was thorough and proactive to get to the root of the problem.
