Chicken Everest ~11€ (best Indian food I've ever had)
    Jacqueline K.

HOLY CHICKEN. This place is probably THE best Indian restaurants I've dined at. I wish I came with a larger group so we could order everything off the menu and I could try it all. As a solo diner, I only ordered the CHICKEN EVERST ~11€ and VEGETARIAN SAMOSA ~1.50€. (still drooling as I type). The restaurant was packed when I got there about 20 minutes after it opened. It was freezing cold outside and my phone was on survival mode at 2%. One of the waiters was exceptionally nice to let me charge my phone as I waited for a seat. I'm not too familiar with Indian cuisine, so I asked what he recommended if I liked spicy and creamy stuff. He immediately gave me a couple of options & I ended up with the Chicken Everst. It's exactly what I asked for, and then some. It came with a side of rice and I was so filled after just half of it. The Vegetarian Samosa was also fried to perfection with a large filling with a plethora of spices. After I got the check, they brought out a shot glass of mango (pudding?) and it was so damn good. The waiter walked me out, asked where I was from, and bid me farewell -- which was the sweetest thing ever!! Obrigado! I will be back -- don't know when -- but I will, and I'm bringing friends/family!!!!!!!!

One may wonder... when visiting Portugal, why eat Nepalese food? Well, if you are in Portugal for a week or so and every meal is eaten at a restaurant, then why not try something different? This small demure restaurant is a two minute walk from the Baixa metro station. Inside it is small and cozy, with tables closely set together. This is what sets this restaurant apart; it's intimacy. The staff greet you at the doorway and do their very best to accommodate you. It's best to have reservations, however if at all possible, the friendly staff will try and find space for you. The food was beyond my expectations. As someone who has Indian roots, I know my Indian food. Nepalese food is almost the same, just with a slight twist on the traditional food one might be used to. We were served popadum upon arrival, with a plate of a trio of raita, achaar and tamarind sauce. We ordered lamb jalfrezi- extra hot and butter chicken- medium. Both were served in mini karahi's with a burner underneath. Both were scrumptious, the best I've had. The naan were served cut into quarters, served in baskets each, and a plate of steaming rice was served where each grain could be individually picked up. At the end, complimentary mango lassi shots are serve, along with candied fennel seeds. I'm blown away as to how delicious the food was. The service was impeccable. The two lovely servers were very kind and very helpful when ordering the food, making sure the food was prepared exactly how we wanted it. Overall, don't go by appearances of this small, humble restaurant. The food is outstanding and I guarantee, it will be one of the best Indian/Nepalese meals you'll have ever eaten. This is a must go when in Lisbon.

After having trouble finding vegetarian food for my wife in the islands, this was our first dinner in mainland Portugal. So so worth it.

Went on a weeknight and there were a few tables open. Staff was welcoming, friendly, and attentive. Food was outstanding. The titular momo is worth an order or more; think steamed dumplings. The real stars of the starters were the Aloo Jeera (sautéed potatoes with onion, simple but incredible) and the Chana Chat (delicious chickpeas with just the right firmness, texture, and taste). If you like spice, try the Tea Momo: braided steamed buns which are bready and bland on their own, but the perfect vehicle to soak up the juicy, spicy vegetables that come with it and really pack a punch. The Chicken Curry, on the other hand, was not at all spicy as expected, but still subtly layered with rich and satisfying flavors and some of the best I've ever had. The Thukpa, traditional Tibetan noodle soup, was another tasty choice. A nice break from traditional Portuguese food, and some of the best in the city overall. Also, when the bill came my dad called it "reasonable" -- which is his way of saying it was really cheap. Would be worth twice the cost!

I would definitely recommend the stir fry-- it was very tasty. The momos are a south Asian dumpling that were worth a try. You can choose from chicken, pork, and vegetarian. The prawn curry was a little too salty for my taste. All in all the meal was very affordable, the service was really prompt & I would recommend this restaurant if you want a change in palette!

So I threw on some clothes and stumbled out of my AirBnb without any ideas other than: must get food for breakfast and then food for dinner. I stopped in to what I thought was an Indian corner store and picked up some groceries. Afterwards, I saw Himchuli across the street and thought to myself, "Self... when is the next time you'll get the opportunity to eat at a Nepalese restaurant in Portugal?" And boy and I am happy I did. The food was flavorful and spicy. Not spicy-hot, but spicy-tasty. The deer meat was tender and succulent; the okra was extremely prepared; and the red wine the owner recommended was spot on. While the venue was empty, I didn't mind because it was late on a Sunday night and the owner gave me such excellent service. I cannot recommend this place enough. This will definitely be one of the many reasons I return to Portugal. This place is officially at the top of my list. Americans beware, though, neither my credit cards nor my debit cards worked. However, the owner guided me to a nearby ATM where I was able to pull out cash. And upon my return, I see the woman who helped me at the Indian corner store. It turns out she's Nepalese and she and her husband own both the restaurant and the corner store.

We decided to walk to this little gem because it was close to our apartment and we missed Indian/Nepali food. I am so so glad we did because it was one of the best meals on our entire trip. Walking up, it has a modest appearance. There is a full menu outside with an English version. Inside are several larger and a few small tables seating 2-6 people. The ambiance was cozy and warm. We chose a small table by the window to enjoy a street view. The waiter who was handling all of the tables himself was an absolute pleasure. He was accommodating, sweet and extremely polite. He offered food recommendations and brought us English menus when asked. We ordered the chicken momos, lamb curry with lentils and okra with tomato curry. We asked for everything to be extra spicy. The food took a little time to come out but everything was delicious. The momos were seasoned well, spicy and the owner(?)/waiter(?) even brought us a spice tray to add more. The dough was perfectly chewy and thick without overbearing the filling. The okra was divine. Soft, perfectly cooked okra paired with spicy and acidic tomato in an extremely aromatic potato curry. Finally, the hearty lamb. Again, the flavors were all there, with tender boneless lamb in a lentil stew that gave it a boldness not usually found in lamb curries. Multiple times, the waiter/owner checked on us but he was never overbearing. We enjoyed our dinner immensely and want to go back again ASAP even though we only have a few nights here. That's how good this place was! Must-try for all lovers of flavor.

Being Indian, the food was very similar in terms of taste, but portions and servings could've been better. The dishes came in little copper pots that were fairly small, and you have to order the rice separately, and also the naan. Again this is probably an American thing where the curry dishes come with rice, but still worth noting. Not only were the portions small, but they also didn't have many pieces of meat or paneer in them. It was basically like 1 per person. Which is unfortunate because that means there is basically more curry than anything else. Taste wise it was great, and they were very accommodating for the kids spice level as well as brought out a sample dish to ensure it met the adults spice level also which was very much appreciated so it could be enjoyable for all. We ordered the chicken tikka for the kids which they loved, and the chicken karai (it was spicy but good), garlic naan, lamb korma, and the saag paneer. The waiter was nice enough to explain to us the different spice levels and differences between Indian and Nepalese food so we could order accordingly. Great staff, very polite, the place isn't fancy or very big, just a family business. However we finished all the food and would suggest you try it out if you're in the area nearby.
