One bite, one spoon, the Holy Burger is 5 stars. Of course, we saw this business on Somebody Feed Phil while he was in Lisbon and we knew we had to try it. Unfortunately, Jesus has passed away but his business is still running strong! Get the holy burger. You have to. Do not leave without trying it. The burger is marinated in spices and topped with an egg yolk and some more spices on top which pack a flavor like you wouldn't believe! Not just flavor, more like an experience. The way the flavors and textures progress in your mouth are incredible. Phil said it so I didn't have to - the flavors are making sexy time. I've never had anything like it. Really solid Goan/Indian food in Lisbon. Meat was cooked perfectly tender (and authentically, bone-in). Their one dish they advertised as very spicy (Hadd Mass) probably approaches a "medium" in India, but still, much spicier than what you can normally find in Portugal! The Catreal de Frango was very good, really fresh tasting curry with the coriander. The Daal was very well executed. Prices were reasonable, it's cash only but there's an ATM about 100 feet away. We finally made it to this wonderful Lisbon restaurant in March. We didn't have a problem getting a table the night we went. It was fun and delicious. The server was very helpful and friendly. We only had a short time in Lisbon but this was our top priority. This place did not disappoint. Everything was fantastic, the chicken in fresh coriander sauce and spices was one of the most delicious discoveries we made in Portugal or in Indian food in a long, long time. The bread was different from what we're used to but tender and just the right texture. Service was great as well, the manager said she was intrigued that Americans would make dinner reservations at 10 pm (we were stoked she picked us out and pointed this out) but we'd already been in the country a week and had acclimated to the late dining culture. Had a great conversation with another one of the staff, they clearly love what they do and are passionate about food. One of the best Indian places in Lisbon. I would definitely recommend it. I would have given it 5 stars but had to take off 2 stars for 2 reasons. 1. This place is expensive, but does not take credit card. Lunch with my wife was about €50 and we were later informed that they don't expect CC. CC is a cost of doing business, so no need to be cheap about 2. Basic things like chutney and onions are extras. As an Indian these things are part of the meal and always included in the price. But this place seems to want to charge for the smallest items, which are almost always complimentary. read more

Somebody Feed Phil brought me here. Disclaimer I think Restuarant owners has a responsibility to be at minimum hospitable when customers walk thru the door. A simple "welcome, good evening, thanks for coming, anything would suffice to show appreciation for patronage. Maybe the owner saves that for the cameras. Trust me this isn't me wanting a peck on the Gluteus maximus, just a little appreciation that's all. (I'm not taking any stars away, I can get pass that) Some yelpers that's an automatic 1 star and a good thrashing to go with it. And you know what I've dined all over the world and hospitality is global not geographical. (you either have or don't) Now on to the food... I think Phil might have over sold the place for entertainment purposes. I mean the food was ok, but will I write mommy and tell her about it, I don't think so. I will say that desert samosa was different, chick peas with dates and ginger ice cream was pretty good. I highly doubt I'll be returning but if your in the area and like this type of food pay him a visit.....don't be looking for any hospitality they don't serve that. Like many, found our way to this place after the Netflix show. The hostess (Philippa) was extremely friendly and we chatted quite a bit. We ordered the Holy Burger, the lamb xacuti, chicken cafreal. We're from India and have eaten authentic Goan food in Goa and we can attest that this was on par with what you get there, down to the spice levels and flavors. Superbly executed and delicious. Although unfortunately the titular owner/chef recently passed, his co-owner and loyal staff have done an excellent job of keeping up the quality of this boutique Goan restaurant. The place is small, so make reservation, but you will find a joyful ambience and superb food. Run by the effervescent Philipa, the restaurant offers a variety of unique dishes, including goatling, shrimp, chicken, shark, as well as appetizers such as chickpeas, samosas and bread. After choosing to avoid another tram and walk downhill, I was excited to come to this restaurant to try Goan food. One thing I appreciated is the food is not "typical Indian food--" which is to say that Indian food outside of India gets reduced to like 5 key things. Indian food is much more than food from Northern India. Seafood is huge from where my parents are from--and in Goa, among other places. That being said, everything ended up just being okay. We heard about this place from a couple staying at our hotel here in Lisbon. They raved about it and after going, I can see why. The dishes are flavorful and not typical of most of the food found in Portugal since it's influenced by the Portuguese colony of Goa (now part of India). Think coriander and cardamom and you'll get an idea of the flavors. The chocolate mousse was thick, dense and creamy and not typical. Really yummy. It's small so either get there at 7:00 pm when they open or be prepared to wait. read more

Wow! Delicious! Make a reservation in advance! We were lucky to stop by when they opened for the evening and grabbed a seat before a reservation came in. Very flavorful Goen food. My husband's family is from Goa so we were really excited to eat here and try it after watching 'Somebody Feed Phil' . His family cooks a lot and his grandma makes her own spices from scratch. We know good Goen food and this steps up to the bar. Staff is friendly and even brought out pineapple when I could not take the heat. ( sorry , I'm a medium heat girl) My husband did just fine! Located just a block from Ave. da Liberdade this place is quite convenient especially when it comes to finding a pseudo-Indian restaurant in that area. I got there just 15 minutes before the kitchen closed for lunch, so I made it a quick meal. I ordered the Shrimp Samosa and as the main entree the Chicken with fresh coriander & spices. Both the samosa's and the chicken dish were packed with flavor. Neither was the traditional Indian food that one is used to, but more of a fusion or perhaps it was 100% Goan but either way I had never tried it and it was absolutely delicious. We learned about the restaurant on "Somebody Feed Phil" and since it's Indian Food was rated as one of the best in Portugal we had to check it out. I read one review on Yelp about someone who wasn't greeted with warm and fuzzies. When we were there they very busy with a limited staff but were very respectful. Their focus was on preparing and serving the food. Filling our stomachs and not our egos. The food was as genuine Indian Food as we could find anywhere. At least through out the US where we typically hang our hat. No way did Jesus impose on us, try to enter our space or toss his success our way. A very, very modest man who blushed when another guest mentioned they learned about him the way we did. We approached him when the crowd thinned out and he was highly cordial, informative and responded to our many questions with tremendous patience. This is a small off-the-beaten path restaurant and absolutely delightful. My wife lit up after a few bites with "There's a party in my mouth." We only have two more days in Lisbon and one of them will be spent there. Not bad to have 4 drinks, a tremendous meal for two and walk out only paying 40 euros. Leave your hungry ego outside the doors and you will not be missing anything. If fact, you will gain a lot! The man we saw on the camera was the man we saw in person - sincere, lovable man trying to make an honest living - who happens to run a damn fine restaurant. What a gem. This tiny little spot in a vibrant neighborhood just crushes it. Jesus is central to what goes down here. Of course he's the chef and proprietor, but he also took our order, made candid suggestions, crafted my cocktail, poured us water, plated our rice, salted and peppered our food, and dropped by a few times throughout the meal to make sure everything was to our liking. His interaction with all guests is endearing, unpretentious, and unobtrusive. There's a natural flow to it all set to the backdrop of Indo-hip hop and floridly colorful walls. The meal itself, though! Who cares if Jesus is a nice guy if he cooks like this? The food is simply spectacular. The samosas were crispy and delicately spiced, both meat and shrimp variants. His suggested starter featured a savory, elegant little burger patty with a beautifully poached egg yolk situated atop. Jesus dusted each with scrapings from a salt and pepper block before reveling knowingly in our enjoyment. The chicken and shrimp curries were rich, but light. Warm spice gave way to gentle heat as we luxuriated in simple delicacy. The parting shot was a densely velvety chocolate gelato with fresh basil and homemade gummy bears, an item not yet on the menu that came highly recommended and did not disappoint. Terrific end to a terrific trip through Portugal. There was no shortage of memorable bites throughout, but this meal really stood out. I was really excited to try some spicy Goan food with flavors of the motherland after a week of eating European food. In truth I actually enjoyed the chutney with the bajias and the shrimp curry ( though the spices in the curry did not taste like they were cooked // roasted thoroughly ). Why the low rating then? Well the lady who was serving us seemed really sick and was coughing up a storm. I was worried about getting sick just being in the same room as her let alone having her serve us the food. Jesus é Goês - meaning "Jesus is Goan"- is tongue-in-cheek: the owner and head chef's name is Jesus and he is, indeed, from Goa, India. The whole restaurant has a playful and mocking vibe, with visual references to both hinduism and indian food. But hey, they're allowed, it's an authentic (heretics') food paradise! Goan cuisine is known for its spiciness but also complex flavour. If you're wondering why is there such a specific region of India so well represented in Lisbon, go back to your history books - Goa is a former portuguese colony, and as it happened with other colonies there was a mix of influences between the two regions. But what makes this particular restaurant so special? First of all, it's minuscule. If you don't book ahead, you'll probably have a hard time getting a table. It may seem harsh, but it actually makes for a more intimate experience and that's also probably why the food is always great. Secondly, Jesus himself is quite a character and will go out of his way to ensure that you know what you're ordering and if you're really enjoying it; he's basically an all-round nice guy who's very passionate about food and Goa. Last,but certainly not least, the food, of course. Most of the dishes are quite hot - like drink half a glass hot - so beware, this may or may not be your type of thing. You can ask for something that's not as spicy, and they'll try to accommodate you, but I wouldn't bet too much on that if you're a fussy eater. I started by saying this but, spice factor is definitely not what this food is all about. Each dish has its own delicate or strong flavours underneath. Even something so ubiquitous as a samosa is deep in taste and harmonious condiments. If you're a vegetarian you'll be happy to find that some of the best dishes - in my opinion - will suit your diet requirements. For dessert, do try the Bebinca - a sort of layered cake -, if you're lucky, or extremely early, it'll still be lukewarm. Five stars for the unpretentious food and setting, the amazing owner, the balanced prices and the amazing flavours. It's just one of those places that you leave with a smile! The restaurant is very small and the lights were dim. Cash only with a very limited menu which was all in Portuguese. I was craving lamb and the waiter, Bruno told me to order the first entree on the menu and said it was really good. Half way thru my dinner I realized it wasn't lamb but goat. I inquired about this and he said it's the same. Lamb and goat are not the same!!! I couldn't hide my disappointment, didn't want to waste the food, finished my meal, paid my check and got the hell out.
