We made a quick stop for lunch on the way home from Montréal. There was construction happening downtown Belleville, so TBH we stopped here as it was the first restaurant that caught our attention. We asked about gluten-free choices and were told that all sandwiches could be served on gluten-free bread and the soups and salads are gluten-free as long as croutons are left off. I had the chicken salad sandwich on gluten-free bread. The bread was toasted (whole grain) and the chicken salad was delicious. There were also two pickle spears on the side. Because the bread slices were small, I got two sandwiches!! There was so much food that my husband had to help me eat it. My husband had a salmon salad on romaine with blueberries. It was a generous portion also and very tasty. The dressing was very good. Our son had a Caesar salad with chicken. He loved the dressing and there was so much chicken he couldn't finish it. The food was very good, the staff were friendly and the restaurant was very clean. Oh, and the food came out within 3-5 of ordering. The prices were ridiculously reasonable ($20.88 including tax for all three dishes). I highly recommend this place. read more

Great stop for a Lunch stop. Nice home made food with unique flavour. The burger could be the best in the area. Salad dressing is amazing. Again, home made!! Looking forward to the construction completion. Hoping the downtown will breath new life. read more

My father's 70th birthday was held at San Souci, and I could not have been more disappointed. First, the food was terrible. Everyone I spoke to echoed my experience with the chicken: it was so dry it was inedible. It had obviously been cooked earlier and reheated for too long in the oven (probably left over from an event earlier in the week), and I couldn't even cut it with a steak knife. The vegetables were way undercooked and not seasoned, and the prime rib was nearly raw. When I spoke to the chef after, he seemed angry, but agreed to make some accommodation for the poor quality (they took half the price off the 10 chicken plates). There was a nice selection of teas on the dessert table, but no hot water to make them. I expected a carafe of coffee and boiling water for tea, and when we asked, they brought out a couple individual cups of tepid water. The servers were timid and absent, clearly not prepared for a group. And 14 of our guests cancelled at the last minute due to a blizzard. My mother (who lives on a government pension and saved for a year for this) knew she would have to pay for those plates, but when she asked if she could take some of the leftovers home, she was told no. I would never go to this restaurant again, and would strongly advise people looking for a place to host an event look elsewhere. read more

I don't know where to begin with this one. The server was beyond incompetent, failing to greet us in a timely manner, had to be prompted for the wine list, didn't know how to serve wine, was unclear what the specials were or even what was on the menu, etc... We ordered the lamb, which was on the menu rather slim menu, only to be told by the chef that the lamb was no good. Fine. We ordered steak. We got the last two. It was 6:30 on a Saturday night! There were four other diners in the whole place! When the waitress took our steak order, we realized she hadn't asked how we wanted it done. When she finally reappeared, we told her we wanted the steaks medium rare. She came back three times to confirm how we wanted them cooked. They were cold and medium well, bordering on well done. But knowing there were no more available, we couldn't send them back. We ordered a local baco noir from the wine list. They were out so they decided to sub in a bland, watery red blend that was served well above room temperature. Finally, we had to ask for silverware. My wife is originally from the Belleville area and had previously enjoyed Sans-Souci's catering business but we both found the restaurant to be a very poor representation of the area's dining choices. I cannot imagine I would ever go back to this place again but if this is their level of competence, I don't suppose I will have to concern myself with that risk for very long. A lunch special that cost almost $20.00 consisted of a glass of diet soda, a tiny amount of pasta salad and a completely undercooked hamburger. When the waitress was informed of the undercooked meat, she only said, "Sorry you're not enjoying your meal," and then left. We've also had a couple of work events catered by Sans Souci and haven't been overly impressed by the food. We won't be using them again. read more

After two lunch experiences, we tried Sans Souci recently for dinner and were disappointed. Service was slow and confused and the meal wasn't very good overall. At first look it is a good value for the pre-fixe menu but the mains weren't so hot (figuratively and literally) lacking in flavour and the dessert was half frozen. The soup and salad were just fine but it was disappointing given our lunch experiences were very good. I can't see trying this establishment again for dinner. read more

We had ribs with home made sauce and a great chicken wrap. The ribs were among the best i have had, and that is saying a lot! The atmosphere is classy with a stylish fountain and modern decor. Beautiful original art on the walls. Lovely, clean washrooms. The chocolate cheesecake is outrageously good. Yum! read more

After hearing a number of people recommend Sans Souci, we decided to go there for dinner tonight and we each had the $25 four course meal. First of all, the atmosphere is really nice - beautiful decor - love the art work around the sides of the cafe and it has quite an intimate feel. Even the bathrooms are gorgeous. The food though - wow. The food was incredible. We both thoroughly enjoyed our soups and the salads (garden and casear salad) were both delicious. The chicken and beef meals that we ordered were cooked very well - the portions were perfect and everything was tender and tasty. For dessert, we had the most delicious chocolate cheesecake that either of us has ever tasted and some delightful chocolate mousse cups. For $25/meal, it was a steal - I have never had this kind of quality food and service for this price in Belleville, actually, anywhere in Canada. Everything was full of flavour and very fresh; clearly the chef making it takes pride in his work. The service was excellent - our server was incredibly helpful, polite and attentive. Would definitely return. Once I mentioned that I would be having dinner there, lots of people commented that they had dinned there before, with fantastic reviews.
