I felt like I got teleported back to the 90's Sanrio store when I walked into this store. It's nothing like the sanrio stores they have back in the mainland, the newly opened ones, which feels like a miniso than a true Sanrio store. Sanrio Surprises has all the items we used to love and adore when we were kids - stationary, pens, pencils, notebooks, stickers, backpacks, random sized containers, diaries, journals, stamps, pins, galore. The best part of this is that the design of the characters are true and real. Some of the sanrio stores in the mainland have questionable designs, its like they drew the characters slightly different. I will have to come back again. read more

This is the last Sanrio store on Oahu. I still remember the one they had at Ala Moana. I used to buy pens, pencils and erasers all the time. I haven't been to a Sanrio store in a long time. Walking into this Sanrio store at Kahala Mall brought back memories. They had the usual pens, pencils and stuffed animals. I noticed a whole section of Tokidoki x Hello Kitty collaboration of bags. Those were really cute and they had bags of all sizes. They also had different designs of Hello Kitty reusable totes. Those were the things I was most interested in.. When this is the only Sanrio store in Hawai'i with everything super kawaii you're just thrilled it's conveniently located right in Kahala Mall. Growing up surrounded by many Japanese characters including Hello Kitty, Patty & Jimmy and Little Twin Stars all things before Gudetama and Chococat this is brings out my inner child and has so tastefully done where I can still surround myself with items and giggle with glee it's all for me lol!! This tiny place is packed filled with many Sanrio items many are difficult to find from stickers to shirts, bags and lanyards it's just a fun and kawaii place to browse for other and yourself as I miss doing this in Japan so much. They not only have Sanrio characters but other kawaii items we'e all known and love here. I remember saving all my allowance money to spend at the Sanrio Surprise in Ala Moana and Pearlridge Center. I didn't realize that there was a Sanrio Surprise at Kahala Mall and that they were the last one. My granddaughters love the cute characters of Sanrio and was in awww to see that there was an actual Sanrio Surprise store. It's your normal cute Sanrio Surprise looking store as I remembered with all my and now their favorite characters. I personally think Kuromi is the best with Hello Kitty coming in as a hot second. There is so many cute things to see and buy. It's a girls dream store. I purchase lucky news years red envelopes with Hello Kitty and My Melody on them for the upcoming new years to wish happiness and blessings into the new year. This store is still being really careful during....Yes there is still a COVID pandemic going on....Only 8 individuals allowed in the store at a time. I appreciate this practice so much.... Not a lot of this practice is happening at many stores. There is so much to see, but I kept mindful that there was a long line of other girls wanting to get in. BEWARE: they sell fake Sanrio stuff. I got so excited because I thought everything was real Sanrio. Bought this hula hello kitty and saw the tag and it doesn't even have the Sanrio licensing tag. It's a rip off of the ABC store kitties. Kind of upset at myself because I thought the kitty looked off but still bought it anyway because I trusted them and I couldn't open the packaging to look at the tag. I should've search it up when I was in the store lol. I looked at the old pics for this store from reviews and it seemed like they USED to have real Hawaii kitties but idk what happened and they started selling fake kitties. Maybe their business is doing bad idk? But still you shouldn't be selling ingenuine stuff if you're going to have Sanrio in your name. Just name yourself something else this point. This is the only Sanrio on the island. Support them and get everything Sanrio related here. They bring in a lot of rare collaboration merchandise too. I think last time I went in there I saw Cinnamoroll with Crayon Shinchan. That was actually really cute. Now I want to buy it... LOL read more

It's Sanrio! Located inside Kahala Mall. I grew up with Hello Kitty. As a child (and as a teen too), my dad would treat us to a few pencils, erasers, or candy from the Sanrio store. Though this isn't the same store we used to come to, they are all very similar. Loads of HK and friends items all along the walls and throughout the store. Employees are friendly and asked us if we needed help with anything. It's always nice to see some of their new products. Sanrio will always have a special place in my heart. read more

Nice store. However the policy of drinks is ridiculous. It is expected to leave your drinks at the front table unattended (according to the lady associate), when the sign states otherwise (see attached photo). It's a small store and they only allow a limited amount of people in. It is pretty obvious what customers are doing. To make everything make sense, don't allow customers with drinks in period. They either consume outside before entering or don't enter at all. Leaving your drinks at the front table unattended is sketchy because you don't know if someone will do something to it. read more

I was hesitant to come after reading negative reviews but glad I did! They do have hand sanitizer when you walk in, which we used because realistically everyone is touching all of the merchandise. Employees were friendly to us. They have a huge selection from figures, eating utensils, stationary, blankets, stuffed animals, calendars and lots more. Most are not things you will find online. OMG was my reaction when I saw this store here at the mall. There's none existing in California! I was in heaven coming here! I picked up a few things for myself and my daughter and her cousins. I literally wanted to buy the whole store! Lol! From Hello Kitty to My Little Twin Stars, etc. They even have little gift bags. How cute! The store was very organized and neat. The lady working the register was super nice. I grew up with Hello Kitty and went to the store back in San Diego when they had them. This is literally one of the last stores standing. There's so much in this store from stationary to pens, plushies, and so much more. I will definitely be back for more items. The lady gave me a stamp card. Very cool! With a heavy heart, it's sad to say that this is the last Sanrio on island. I had travelled across the island to pick up My Melody items. It's been awhile since I've shopped here. I haven't collected any HK items since my early college years. Now, it's My melody! They are fully stocked up and pretty organized. In the front are different collections and the newer shipment. As you walk halfway through the store, the characters are then divided by section. The items were pretty pricey, but overall a better deal than items found online. I couldn't wait for Japan, so unless you won't be flying there anytime soon, shop at Sanrio in Kahala Mall. The lady had mentioned that they will honor the stamp cards from other locations (pearlridge/ala moana/Windward). The ladies were really nice and very helpful whenever I had a question. Side note, I went to Don Quijote and could barely find Sanrio items.. So taking the drive down this side was well worth it! read more

Sanrio always caters to the child in everyone. Just by entering into this store, it transports one into a fantasy world. I like stores like this because shoppers surround themselves with fluffy and fun merchandise. Ever since I was a teen, I always loved coming to Sanrio. As a teen I loved to buy stationaries and give them as gifts. Characters such as My Melody, Little Twin Stars, Kero Kero Keroppi, and of course the perennial favorite, Hello Kitty stand out and endure. These characters decorate suitcases, purses, pencils and pens and even clothing. They make items look fun and delightful. Note the color pink make shoppers feel more relaxed. Nowadays, I go and just browse to see what products come out. For some reason, I feel a certain type of comfort walking into the store. Sanrio maintains their merchandise and store very well. Well lit and the open space helps shoppers to move freely. Too bad the Sanrio store at the Ala Moana Center closed. If ever another one opens close by, I will find myself going there and reminisce. With the immense popularity of Hello Kitty, it's disappointing that this is the only Sanrio Surprises in Hawaii. I suppose online sales is one reason why. Only in Kahala Mall is where you can see, shop, feel, and immerse yourself in everything Hello Kitty. One of my close friends used to work here when we were a lot younger, and the store then till now has not changed one bit. The only dramatic change is the prices! My mom is a big Hello Kitty fan as she has quite a collection of Hello Kitty merchandise. I think her dream is to have everything Hello Kitty lol, which is very much possible. The store is well-lit and clean, and surrounded in Hello Kitty merchandise. I feel compared to before, Hello Kitty, or this Sanrio has become more fashion oriented with its wide selections of handbags, makeup bags, luggage, jewelry, etc, and away from the normal, practical, everyday use items. I was looking at bags for my mom, and it's apparent the quality isn't as good anymore. The stitching, printing, and designing on its items were different from one another. Some prints were off centered, some stitchings went off line, some designs were slightly different than the other, and etc. It's strange how not all are the same. I wasn't expecting to choose bags like how I choose produce! The customer service isn't the same as before! I was not greeted until I got closer to the register and made eye contact. I was never asked if I needed help, and when I was paying, it felt like they were just going through the motions. I want my mom to be happy and want her to have as many Hello Kitty things, but I didn't really enjoy shopping here, and the prices on some items are just crazy high and unrealistic. read more

The most UNFRIENDLIEST and the WORST customer service I've experienced at a retail store. The woman working was playing a game on her phone. We were the only customers in the store and absolutely no eye contact or a "hi, welcome to our store". Sad. Then there's a sign asking you to limit your time in the store so others can come in. SMH. I think this might be my most favorite cute fun store in the entire Kahala Mall! :D If you're a Hello Kitty (and friends like Pochacco - sometimes they might have some of the friends too) aficionado, this shop will enchant you. The store is long and narrrow and brightly lit. You will find it filled to the brim full of practical and not so practical items from notebooks calendars post-its stickers to pens and wooden and mechanical pencils, to umbrellas earrings necklaces (some in sterling silver!) watches hair pieces figurines and stuff animals, to key chains name tag holders, luggage and travel items like ingenious fold up carry bags flat iron sleeves and totes in various themes of various sizes color combinations and materials, blankets and towels, hats, scarves, and all sorts of bags pouches kitchen and lunch items! This year I notice they also have a very small section of clothing items like tee-shirts jackets and cardigans in limited sizes for kids and adults too if you can fit them to add to their already extensive list of literally everything under the sun Hello Kitty-related. The amazing thing is how everything all throughout the store is all so cute! Even if you think you won't want to buy anything here, you're likely to find that one thing you didn't realize you need in your life haha! They do carry some other characters I'm not familiar with like Little Twin Stars, Tuxedo Sam, and a yellow egg guy. As for the cute Pochacco doggie character items, you can ask the sales ppl to put you on their waitlist and they'll call you when these items are in stock (it does happen!)! I'm happy and thrilled to report that they have been stocking one really cute style this past year but it would be great to see more Pochacco! The only thing I'd like improved are the prices. If an item is well-made and is excellent quality, I kind of don't mind paying more for it to last but sometimes the long lasting quality is not there but it's still very expensive. They do have a Sanrio Store loyalty stamp card rewards program. Save them up for $5 discounts (each filled rewards card) on your next purchase (you can combine) or use them toward a gift redemption (see tall narrow glass case left of the cash register area). Situated in Kahala Mall on the Consolidated movie theater Starbucks side across from Fun Factory. Their sister stores in Pearlridge Shopping Center and Ala Moana Shopping Center closed so this will be the one place to get your Sanrio fix. In my opinion what makes this store more successful is the buyer for this store in particular makes consistent amazing buying decisions to stock not just cute but also very practical items that may also have a lot of ingenuity built in (that will tickle your creative bone) in addition to being good quality and long-lasting. All in all this store fulfills my Hello Kitty and Pochacco addiction and allows me to add cute happy things into my daily life. read more

Thankfully, this store is still standing strong. I was so sad to see that all the other Sanrio shops have closed throughout the years. So THANK YOU KAHALA SANRIO :) They have a great selection that does not disappoint. You can follow them on IG and see their newest additions to the shop. The prices are fair. They have a stamp card- which can be hard for me to keep up with. But, they do allow you to return with your receipt with your card, or get a new one. I don't know why I'm so drawn to Hello Kitty - - I can spot her a mile away... I'm not really a cat person - I have allergies! Haha! So, I really don't understand my slight obsession with her... I just think she is so cute! Her personality and friendliness is so positive. I can just go into Sanrio Surprises at Kahala Mall in the theater wing and come out happy by just looking at all of the items there... I had a suitcase that got worn down so badly... I have towels, steering wheel covers, air fresheners, pens, pencils, purses, tote bags, mugs, luggage tags, eyeglass case, etc. Many of these were gifts - thank you! (Not hinting... although I am easy when it comes to gift-giving time... LOL!) This store has a clearance section towards the back which I always check out when I'm at this mall. Sometimes I just happen to be there during a Sidewalk Sale and get some really good deals! They had the exclusive Hawaiian Humane Society t-shirt which I would get every year. This place has bad karma. There is a bitter old lady that apparently manages the place. At the front, there is a plastic chain on one side that prevents you from entering, yet that old lady deliberately waits inside the store for shoppers to enter on the other side where there is no chain, then scolds you for entering the wrong side! Its total nonsense, as both paths lead into the store and if they had any sense at all, they would put the chain on the exit side, not the entrance side, or do away with the bloody thing entirely. Once inside, you see lots and lots of signs ordering customers what NOT to do; it was an unpleasant experience, made worse by that old lady constantly staring at you, like she expected you to shoplift or, worse yet, disobey one of those signs, heaven forbid. No wonder nobody there bought anything. Who would want to patronize a place like that? read more

The line to get in takes absolutely forever. There's a sign outside that states 8 people max inside because of covid, but I guess kids can't spread covid or something because they only seem to count adults in their tally so there will be an easy 15 people in the store counting people who bring their kids. They told me and my husband only one of us could enter or we would have to wait longer because only one more person could go in the store, but if it was just me with 4 kids it probably would have been fine for us all to go in lol. My husband and I ended up waiting which took another 10+ minutes in line. The store is pretty large inside so I think the 8 person rule is a little unnecessary at this time; I just wish the process was more streamlined if anything. The products are fine, seem to be authentic but a lot of it is overpriced for what it is. The staff didn't say much which doesn't bother us, but I know some people like to ask questions and receive help etc so that might be an issue for them. read more

I'm a kid at heart, and was thrilled to check out a Sanrio shop in Hawaii. In fact, we drove all the way to this mall just for this shop! I know Sanrio has special exclusive items only available in Hawaii. Unfortunately it was slim pickings for exclusive items and service was nonexistent here. No one ever greeted me or even asked if they could help. I ended up leaving the store without buying anything. The two girls working at the store were more absorbed in themselves than anything. I have loved Sanrio since I was a little girl and there are no Sanrio stores near where I'm from so when I found out there was one in hawaii I had to come by and check it out! Everything is definitely overpriced and the customer service is not too great but I did enjoy being around all the Sanrio stuff.
