Seeing as I don't wear glasses or contacts and have stellar vision, my experience here was quick and painless. Despite the aging outer appearance, the clinic is modern and clean. Seems to be operated like a fine tuned machine. Everyone was professional ushered me from room to room as I completed several tests before seeing the doctor. As vision centers go, this one is nice. Why not 5 stars: read the fine print. In this case, it's a regular print, but if you have vision problems, it might seem like fine print (ha ha har) The papers they have patients sign before being seen tack on extra fees before even being seen. My insurance requires I pay $20 for a yearly exam (remember I have no eye issues) but I walked out of there having paid almost $90. I knew it was coming because I read what I was signing. Can you be seen without signing? Apparently yes because a woman asked that same question while I was waiting and the receptionist said that's okay. Odd. Overall it was a good experience and I don't have to return for a year. read more

My spouse was seen for a routine annual exam to check if her prescription needed to be changed. They take our vision insurance but not medical - which isn't a problem because my wife had no eye complaints. During the exam the doctor noted a PREVIOUS history of an old eye disease that was treated successfully two years ago. This one comment was then charged as a medical diagnosis which means we had to pay $250 out of pocket simply to be told what we already knew. This was old history, not a current issue. It's like you go to the doctor for a wellness check and they charge you $250 extra to remind you that you had surgery years ago. They have now lost my business, my wife's business and we will be sure anyone who's looking for an eye exam to stay clear of this place. I hope the $250 was worth it. read more

It's been a couple of years since I've replaced my glasses, so I dropped by Sandia Vision Clinic to look at the frames they offer. I was surprised to find out that you can no longer walk in and just look at their frames. They require you to be "signed in" and have an employee show you around. I was not surprised, but disappointed in the reception I received, which was unfriendly and rude. The last time I tried to use Sandia for services I was treated rudely. I have been going here for years. Dr. Magnus just retired and I will miss him. I just wanted to mention that they sell pills to prevent macular degeneration. They are on the counter when you walk in. To all those that are told they need it, go online and order from Walmart! Sandia sells theirs for about $80 I believe and I found it online at Walmart for $23. Same ingredients, 90 days, same brand MacuHealth. You do have to wait for it to be shipped but you don't pay for shipping. (The bottle even looks exactly the same.) read more

I would have rated my experience as 0 stars if I had the option. I had been going to Sandia Vision for more than 20 years. My eye doctor, Dr. Magnus, retired so I was scheduled with Melissa Hockett for what was supposed to be, a routine annual eye exam. During the exam, Hockett said nothing had changed since my last visit but at checkout, the amount charged was over $100. When I questioned the charge, I was told that Hockett noted a "medical diagnosis" of early signs of cataracts. I asked to speak with Hockett about it and she said she had to note what she saw even if cataracts never materialize! (She did the exact same thing with my sister!) This "medical diagnosis" resulted in the visit being charged as "medical" resulting in them erroneously charging a $50 copay (should have been $35). They overcharged me and now I am fighting them to refund the overcharge. They have lost my business as well as my family members' business. Steer clear of this business. The office staff are incompetent and condescending and will overcharge you and a routine eye exam will turn into a medical issue so they can collect more insurance money. All the good doctors are gone and what's left are "doctors" who care more about money than they do your eye health. read more

I went in for a routine optometry exam and during the exam the doctor noted while I have no new problems, I had a history of a retinal hole two years ago. I had surgery and fully recovered. Two years ago. But because she added that diagnosis code to my bill I was charged for a medical visit. Since you don't take my medical insurance I had to pay over $200 to be told about my previous history. I have no new medical issues, and that old retinal problem was long healed. Lost Patient??? I was a patient here since Dr Puro took over the practice on Menaul she has since retired. Dr Chinisci is excellent but is now retiring as well. I called to get prices and fees since I am now on Humana Medicare/Eye Med. The receptionist couldn't give me the cost for an eye exam she was too busy telling me that if my exam turned medical instead of routine they didn't take my insurance and the charge would not be covered. For over 25 years I was a customer of Sandia Vision Clinic. That ended today. The clinic started using some third party software called crystalpm. It's worthless. Sandia Vision texted me last week to get a referral from my PCP for the visit since they wanted to use a machine to take pictures of the back of my eyes. I contacted my PCP, she called me and had trouble with electronically submitting a referral. I go to my appointment and they tell me the machine is down, I will have to come back at a later date. Pay my copay and I'm asked for my email, my receipt will be available on the website. I receive the email after being on hold on the phone and then texting the office asking for the receipt. I hate to say it, but no more Sandia Vision Clinic for me. After 25 years, they want to save paper (that's their excuse). I'll wait for the receipt in the mail (that doesn't save any paper). I really like the doctor. She is very thorough. My glasses prescription was not correct so they redid the glasses which was okay. I have been treated. Very respectfully, each time I went in and my husband got his glasses too, but when I went to get the glasses that they had redone I walked up to the counter. The doctors and staff are fantastic, but the clinic hours are no longer friendly for working folks. You used to be able to make an appointment after 5pm one day a week and they were able to order new lens for old pairs of glasses at the Nob Hill location. Now you have to take time off of work for an appointment and drive across town to the heights clinic if you want to see if you can get news lens for older glasses. Again, the staff and doctors are great, but I may need to find a new optical store. I'd prefer a one stop experience but that may no longer be an option with Sandia Vision. read more

Sandia Vision Clinic Nobhill I'll be thorough because I thoroughly DO NOT recommend Sandia Vision Nobhill. The best ever, Dr Alyssa Irons, no longer accepts Presbyterian Centennial after my family and I have been happy going there for twenty years. I was looking forward to another office and Dr and Sandia was the place that had the first appt months out. The parking lot appears to be only for so I parked at Flowers. I stood at the locked door looking into the office with three workers ignoring me while I followed the directions to call from my car to be allowed in (10/21). They finally acknowledged me and unlocked the door while four people STILL didn't acknowledge I was standing there while they discussed me. I was looking for new frames and only updating my prescription. I was the only person person waiting in more silence than a library. There were signs to not touch any frames until a staff member allowed it. There timely and came into the room very soon (No one else was waiting) and recited everything about what was about to happen to me. Dr Estrada is very good at reciting things as if I was not an actual person and no matter how nice and engaging I attempted to be to draw out an ounce of personality, she doesn't have one. That's fine, I only need to see, not feel like I'm speaking to someone in the people business. I til all the tests but wasn't able to see because it was fogged up by my mask. Instead of allowing me to take my mask off after asking how I was supposed to see, she handed me a tissue and said to wipe it off. So unacceptable since I'm here to find glasses that work. After all that she asked what readers I get from the Dollar Tree and I said 1.75. She said she agreed with me that is what I need to see. After what I think was a very good examination of my eyes and contact exam, she said I was wrong about my prescription of 20 years and I should wear contacts that we both verified I can't see with and was told that no matter what my previous Dr said, she was right. Ihad to take them out to see. Fine. I waited about 20 minutes for a guy who had been wandering around to come attend to the frames my insurance covered. Rather than have a selection of the 30 plus frames my insurance covered, he had to go take more time to pull out the ugliest 12 same frames ever. I was told that, although my insurance offered many more frames, that's all they had to offer and maybe go see our other office or call them and ask some other place. Well the provider that I saw (Chinichi) was very good and took his time with the exam, unlike other optometrists. My only complaint and the reason why I gave the rating that I did is because when they called me to confirm to get fitted for my hard lenses, the lenses were sent to the wrong location. The front desk called me three times prior to my appointment, asking for my prescription, I said, i don't have my prescription, it is in your system. I went in for "ground breaking" dry eye treatment that was going to cost over $1000 dollars that my Insurance would not cover (should have been a hint). Dr. Hokett and some girl named Evie were in charge of my sessions. Evie had no clue what she was doing and there was not a doctor around to assist. The red light session was debilitating. I had migraines for several weeks after the procedure which I never get. In the session I repeatedly told her I was nauseous and she ignored me. The day of the procedure I was incapacitated to work due to consistent vomiting and severe dizziness. I had to take 5 hours of PTO that day which required me to not see 5 mental health patients at my counseling office. I really hope they cease this money making scheme that does nothing but harm patients. read more

PEOPLE BEWARE !!!Too bad there is not NEGETIVE STARS for ratings!!!! If it did I would rate it at a MINUS,MINUS,MINUS 5!!!! My experience with Sandia Vision started September 2022 when I made an appointment to purchase glasses ( I already had my prescription) after cataract surgery in June 2022 by a outstanding Eye Association. I went to Sandia Vision because the other place didn't have the frames I liked so I checked to make sure that Sandia Vision was a company that my insurance would cover. My insurance EOC stated for vision care that after cataract surgery that one pair of glasses or contact lenses would be covered with a 20% copay! (There was no mention of how much $$$ for frames, lenses etc. or limit on how much they would cover) it just said one pair of glasses covered. So I went in there and a young gentleman helped me, and I told him that I had my prescription and that I had insurance that covered one pair of glasses after cataract surgery ( I gave him my insurance card) . He took all my information then told me to go and pick out a pair of frames and then come back to him and he would finish the order. After he finished the order he told me the total cost ($800+) I then reminded him that I was only responsible for 20% copay. I asked what was the amount (20%) would be? He said he would have to go and check with the people that did the insurance claims. when he came back he said that the 20% was $181.20 . AT NO TIME DURING THE TRANSACTION DID HE MENTION THAT THERE WAS A LIMIT OR CAP ON THE AMOUNT THAT THE INSURANCE WOULD PAY! When they filed the claim for the glasses with the insurance, they summited it without telling them it was after cataract surgery so the insurance paid for only the one pair per year allowance of $250! They said they had resubmitted the claim. I never saw on my statement where they resubmitted the claim! Sandia Vision told me that the insurance had taken the $250 off and refigured the amount paid for the glasses (Adjustments were never shown) Balance now they said was $668. I got a call from the accounts manager and said that the insurance had payed all they were going to pay and that I owed the balance but they were willing to work with me and reapply the $250 and now my balance was $418 and that's what I owe! I called my insurance company (5/1/23 and 4 other times before and one of those times the ins. person said I only owed $39.92?) and this person said it didn't look or sound right and would call Sandia Vision to see what was going on. Also they had filed a claim for frames under a doctor from there clinic that I never saw!!! The person from the insurance got back with me back and said that the accounts manager said that she had told me that I had picked a pair of frames and lenses that was over the limit and I would have to pay the difference! THAT WAS A LIE! NEVER NEVER DID SHE OR ANY OTHER EMPLOYEE TELL ME THAT!!!! ( NO WAY HAVE I EVER SEEN WHERE A PAIR OF FRAMES COST $418.00) Beware!!! This place has gone from bad to worst. There is essentially no customer service. You can call them and leave a voice mail, but no one is going to call you back. You can try to stay on the phone for 2 hours to get someone on the line. They used to have online appointment scheduling, but they took that away and now everything is by the phone. Please. Want to cancel your appointment? Good luck waiting on the phone again. They charge you $450+ for contact lens fitting. That's your portion after insurance. There are many better places. I have chronic dry eye. I had a Lipi Flow Treatment here for over $1,000. The procedure was not covered by insurance. I can see now why it is not. The Doctor apparently doesn't know how to code it for insurance or care to find out how to code it. I have had nothing but problems with both eyes since and have lost vision in both eyes. I don't advise getting the treatment if you value your eye sight. The treatment was at the end of August and now at the end of November I am still suffering complications. If I could give negative reviews I would. I have gone to Sandia Vision for over 10 years. I loved my doctor there but he retired and this place has really gone downhill, and not not just since Covid. We have had significant issues with them for at least the past 2 years. They don't return phone calls, they destroyed my daughters glasses trying to "fix" them. It took them 6 weeks to get my husbands glasses in before Covid and after we called they were magically just in. My other daughter called every day for over a month and left messages trying to talk to someone in their glasses department and they never called back. Covid is no excuse for poor customer service! I like her very much and think she is a great eye doctor. The customer service in the optical shop, however, was beyond ABYSMAL. Even when I finally got to speak with an actual person about my issue (they don't answer the phone, they text you after you call and ask if they can help via text), it was made clear to me that they didn't really care about my experience or their lackluster service. They must be used to those kinds of calls. That's perfectly fine, there are a lot of other eye doctors around.
