Well I wish I could post our videos from the sand dunes but it does not let me. It was a blast. The man who works here tells you exactly how to do things if you've never been. I recommend getting the sand boards you stand on instead of sled as you can sled on these too and they are way easier to use.

Accept no imitations. This was the coolest thing we did on our trip up the Oregon Coast! We reserved a reservation well in advance which I would recommend. We also paid extra for lessons (and a T-Shirt!) which I would recommend. A young man named Caleb was our instructor and he was great. Not only was he personable and easy to talk to for the hour and a half of our lesson, but he was very good at explaining how to ride and improve your technique. Sand Master seems to own about 4 acres of dunes behind their shop which is all we needed to spend a few hours sand boarding. I will say that walking up these massive dunes after each run is hard work. My calves were definitely feeling it the next day. I cannot recommend this place enough. This has got to be one of the most unique things you can do in this part of the country. You can also take these boards out for 24 hours if you want. It seems like there are many other places to sandboard up and down the coast, but three hours at this park was plenty for us!

This is a highlight of my entire trip to Oregon! I needed only a 1-hour lesson with the super cool and friendly instructor Gabriel to learn how to go all the way down the hill! By myself! Gabriel, thank you so much! I really appreciate all your help! P.S. I do HIGHLY recommend this AWESOME place to anyone who wants to learn how to do sandboarding! I was truly happy today!

You can't beat this deal! 24 hours and the freedom to take the board where you want for $16 We opted to use the Dunes on the far side of their parking lot and would recommend it! Great spot with tons of options (hills). The woman working was helpful in teaching us tips and which boards would well suite our group (a mix of kids 4-12 and 4 adults). We sand boarded the first evening and again the next afternoon... probably 5-6 hours total? Couldn't get enough!

We rented a sandboard from Sand Master Park for my 11yo son, who has enjoyed snowboarding and skateboarding and wanted to try a new medium (sand). We rented a sandboard for $16 (for a 24 hour period), and were told the best boarding was to be found further south in the Oregon Dunes National Monument. Unfortunately, we had only an hour before we had to continue heading south (we were on a family vacation touring Oregon coast), so we contented ourselves by heading out on the dunes behind the Fred Meyer about a quarter mile south of Sand Master Park. We had been expecting that there would be a Sand Master Park right there where we rented the board. There may be a park there, but we were not told about it. They offer individual and group instruction on sandboarding, but due to our short time available, we did not try this. When we returned the board around noon.

Super, super good times!! My 10 year old and 13 year old and I rented sandboards today from Sand Master Park AND we dune bugg-yed. It was great and we'd recommend to anyone passing thru Florence. We got warmed up on our sandboards right behind the park, but then ventured on to the Honeyman state park for some longer, steeper hills. Lon was great and gave us the basics before we took off. Showed us stance and how to wax our boards, common pitfalls, etc. so we were set up nicely. Got to keep our boards for 24 hours. Andy, our dune buggy Sherpa was awesome too!! He told us the history of the Oregon dunes in addition to us flying and drifting all over the place. Felt totally safe and in good hands. So fun!! Got lucky with a beautiful day today. Sunny, but breezy. If you dunebuggy, bring a hoodie - it gets a little colder and the sand blasts your skin a bit. But all good! Loved it. We'll be back next time we're in town to visit the G'ma!

Ask the Community - Sand Master Park

What are your hours of operation? Are you open every day?

10am - 6pm every day during the summer months.

Is the park still currently open? (I'm not sure what phase Florence, OR is in and how that affects parks like this.) Thank you!

Yes! We are open everyday from 9:30 - 6pm

Is there an ideal time of day to do this this during time of year? (Spring)

Mornings are generally a better time for lessons. If it's going to be a windy it usually picks up around noon then dies down later in the day.

I was actually surprised how quiet it was (okay camping in a public campground is never silent but it was pretty moderate noise). The advantage of it being such a large campground too is that they had nice, well-equipped, clean facilities equally spaced out. Showers are free to use, though I didn't while we were there. A cute welcome center in the middle has info, games/books, and ice and firewood to buy and is located right next to a pretty good sized playground for kids. It's also a super dog-friendly place (we brought our 75# boy with us) and everyone there seemed to be mindful of their own dogs with leashes/cleaning up. Honeyman is located close to the heart of Florence and close to lots of recreation activities - dunes, beach, two lakes, etc. We enjoyed a quick walk over to Cleawox Lake each day to play, and rented a paddle boat too! The only downside is that like most Oregon State Park campgrounds you do need to plan quite a bit ahead to reserve your spot online. Trails here include barrier-free boardwalks, walks through coastal rhododendron and wax myrtle groves to the beach, and a loop through the spruce forest that makes a stop at remote campsites along Siltcoos Lake. There's a $5 day use fee, or you can use one of the many passes that work here. Camping costs $20 per night for a single unit with a 2-vehicle parking limit. It's open year-round, and probably not a bad deal considering there's potable water and flush toilets. Plus there don't seem to be lots of campers here so maybe it'll be extra peaceful for you.

Darlingtonia is the only Oregon State Park dedicated to protecting one single species: the Darlingtonia. The only plant in this species is the Cobra Lily, which is the only pitcher plant native to Oregon. (In other words, this state park exists to protect the cobra lilies that grow here.) The reserve is small, but definitely worth checking out. A short accessible boardwalk crosses a bog filled with several hundred, if not a few thousand, cobra lilies. The 'pitcher' part of the plant, which is the part that resembles a cobra, is visible year round. In spring, it puts up yellow and purple flowers. Many of these flowers dry in place, and are still somewhat visible in winter. Even without the flowers in bloom, the pitchers themselves are neat and pretty to look at. There is no fee to visit Darlingtonia. The small parking area only has room for about ten cars or so, but it takes less than fifteen minutes to walk through.
