The food at San Simeon bar and grill is great everything I've had on the menu has been exactly what I have asked for and great tasting. I want to take a minute to talk about the service I e been in San Simeon for the last 5 months for work and I can tell you 100% the service here is amazing everyone there is so kind and helpful I can say enough good things about the service here. The food, service, and view were all incredible. The first night we ordered the blackened snapper with a fish topping.... Amazing! The vegetables were perfect aldente with a light butter. The only reason I am giving them 3 stars is because they are a little overpriced for a dinner. But again you is nothing else's around the Hearst Castle that was the only reason we stayed here. Employees are nice and friendly. Food was ok. Nice view of the ocean I guess that's why you need to pay some little extra lol if you stay at the hotel they will give you a 10%discount card. We eat dinner and breakfast here.. definitely recommend this place if you need a place to crash on your way to the castle. read more

We stopped here for a quick snack and drink. We haven't been for at least 7 years. We recognized the bartender, Luis, and he remembered us. We ordered the hot wings and a glass of wine. The hot wings were very good, crispy with just the right amount of wing sauce. The bleu cheese dressing was freshly made with chunks of bleu cheese and was absolutely delicious. If you have any sense whatsoever you will not eat here. Imagine a crappy place like Denny's or Dominoes but 3 or 4 times as expensive. Our 10 inch pepperoni pizza was 26 bucks and they didn't even get the toppings right. Instead they brought us a combo. The 33 dollar ribeye ordered medium was brought out well done although to be fair it's hard to cook a 1/2 inch thick ribeye to medium because who the fuck cuts their steaks that thin?!?! We stopped in last week as we were staying at the hotel. We sat outside and it was a nice vibe. I asked the waitress what was gluten free on the menu and she listed off a few things and one of the nw as the ribs. She told me they were good and I ordered them and my husband ordered a seafood scampi. A few minutes later another table got their food and I could smell the seafood and it did not smell good. We then got our food and his smelled bad and he said it tasted just as bad, very rubbery and smelled bad. My ribs were some of worst ribs I've ever eaten and guess what, they were not gluten free. I am celiac and started reacting half way thew dinner. We paid $72 with tip (yes we still tipped as we understand with covid people are struggling) for something that was horrible and would not recommend to our worst enemy. It took about 20 min to get a waiter which I only saw once when we order our drinks, the water they served us let's me know they need new piping, appetizers came after a 20min wait, we had mozzarella sticks and garlic bread which was burned, the mozzarella sticks were store bought and straight out of the box, marinara sauce out of a jar. It looks like no one has control of this place, no stablished work stations for the waiters/waitresses, the furnishings are old and outdated, some trifold dividers separate the "fancy(based on prices)restaurant " from an old outdated stage and convenience little market. Today is my 17th anniversary we were trying to have a good dinner after visiting Hearst Castle, and I'm not hesitant to say this was the worst service I've ever experienced, oh by the way,,,how can you be short staffed on a Saturday night?!!! Ate there last night, my wife got food poisoning , And I thought she was going to die about midnight. Actually we got a pizza which I thought was pretty good and a chicken quesadilla. I had a dark beer and June had a bloody Mary, We got back to the cheap hotel in San Simeon in about an hour after we returned she got deathly ill. I can't really recommend this restaurant. We were served with hot bread rolls which tasted extremely sour. I've had sourdough before, but this is really sour... and I don't think this is supposed to be sourdough bread. Clam Chowder, a recommended soup on the chalkboard, tasted like a mixture of mushroom soup and some clam chowder soup straight from Campbell's soup can, but the flavor leaned heavily toward the mushroom soup side. Italian Pizza with sweet peppers - the meat was completely bland, but the sweet peppers were indeed sweet. Salmon - the fish was also bland and not fresh and the side vegetables which were consisted of broccolis and carrots were also bland... I've never had bland vegetable before, so I never thought this was possible. Pacific Coast Scampi - squid did not taste like squid at all and tasted bland. Possibly monkfish. Halibut was bland, but shrimp was ok. Services was ok and restaurant was busy, so I don't blame the waitstaff for being inattentive, but the quality of food is unacceptable at this price. I've eaten here a few times before while passing through and although a bit pricey (but that seems to be the norm for San Simeon overall) the food was ok. I was just here a few days ago, and while staying at the adjoining San Simeon Lodge (good value but paper-thin walls) ate dinner here over New Year's weekend. The place was actually packed, whereas in the past, it was always nearly empty. Anyway, I don't know if it wasn't the regular cook but this time everything was over-salted to the point of being almost inedible. This was my first time eating here and overall it was ok. The menu states their clam chowder is famous....not sure for what. It had chunks of potatoes but only a few clams. Definitely not the best clam chowder in the area or on the street. The tuna sandwich was simple. Very much like making it at home. Nothing special or extravagant about it. The green salad was nice and was probably the best part of the meal. This place is really great. Not sure why it has such a low number of stars. I would totally eat here again. Everything we had was really good. I had the clam chowder soup and it tasted really fresh. My kids had burgers and they tasted good. We had coconut shrimp with a sweet chile sauce and that was great too. Arrived around 8.30am for breakfast. Just a few customers. Limited staff had the two wait persons very busy. We were seated immediately and service was prompt but not rushed. Coffee was OK. Breakfast was good and portions were plentiful. I could seem soem folks were a little antsy expecting faster service. Our service was and good. Friendly and helpful but spread a little thin. Since we had plenty of time before out 10.am Hearst Castle tour, we were not in a rush and were happy with the experience. Other customers were overly impatient and rather rude and unfriendly to the staff, Clearly urban dwellers who are used to being rushed through restaurants. I wished they could slow down a little and appreciate the large, open view to the ocean. I think there were several folks, like us, staying one night in San Simeon to be close to Hearst Castle. I think a couple days is needed to learn to slow down and get on coastal time. It is slower and more relaxed. Don't be in a city rush. read more

Can't speak to the food. We were driving up the coast and stopped here for espresso drinks. I ordered a mocha and it was truly disgusting. It didn't taste like chocolate and it left a foul taste in my mouth long after taking a sip. I went back inside and told the barista that it wasn't what I expected and asked for a different drink. I was trying to be polite, I didn't want to tell him the mocha was straight up gross, but he kept asking me if I just wanted more chocolate added to the mocha. Finally he made me a different drink, without a word. Wouldn't even look me in the eyes. It was simply a very disappointing and unpleasant experience. I won't stop here again. read more

The wine is horrible, the service was awful, the host who sat us put us in a lousy table but the couple who came in after us got a nice seat by the window - I will also mention that their waiter was with them immediately, they got their food before our order was taken and they had paid and left by the time we got our appetizer. The hostess stared at me as I waited for her to instruct me on seating but said nothing to me so I asked, "do we seat ourselves?" and she said, "no," waited a few seconds and then took us to our table. I don't mind paying for good food and service but this place had 2 stars to begin with, bad service in my first 30 seconds there and was overpriced. This place isn't even worthy of ONE star. All the reviews are awful and they are all true. We only went here because everything else in this dead stretch on the 1 was closed and we were starving. We didn't even mess around with most of the menu because it wasn't worth our time. The bf and I split some chicken strips and something else that was pretty unmemorable. The food was just bland and cold. The bread that we were served when we started was disgusting too. Nothing was worth boxing up and taking back to our hotel room. The food is what you'd expect from a restaurant in the middle of no where. The bread we got was white, as if it was undercooked, and tasted VERY sour, which might have been too much yeast? I had the rib eye, which was fine as far as the meat goes, but the mushroom sauce and the fries that came with them had no flavor (salt) and the sauce was runny. My wife had the pasta Alfredo, which tasted floury, and frankly you can get a better pasta sauce out of any supermarket pasta sauce jar. read more

I think maybe a small breakdown in communication throughout the serving staff. Anyway, once we alerted a busser that we'd like to order, our server was at our table very quickly. We had the filet mignon and top sirloin. Both were AWESOME!! It took forever for our food to be served, but completely worth the wait. I took a star off because of the length of time it took to order our food and to receive our food. But the steaks were so delicious, I don't mind waiting. Patience is a virtue. read more
