No frills gym, great foundation for future athleticism. My daughter's been going here for a couple months and I'm pretty happy with how it's going, and she enjoys it a lot more than other classes she's done. Pros: Huge facility. Tots are separated from older kids who are obviously training for serious competition. Kids get exposure to using all types of equipment. Teacher is structured and has good control of a very wiggly group. More than one tot class runs concurrently and all of them are orderly which is absolutely key for safety. The little kids are in a separate room from the main gym but still occasionally go into the big gym for short use of big kid equipment. For those with older girls, they are strict against taking pics in the facility overall and I appreciate that. Ventilation is decent. Price is average for activities in the bay but worth it for the amount of learning packed into 45 minutes. Cons: Not gonna lie- it's a dated facility and smells like a gym sock. It's either a converted warehouse or industrial garage so it's either cold or hot. This is a real-ass gym, not a cutesy fun house. Only the little kid annex has like cute murals. I would not recommend it as a party venue unless they only use the little kid part, but I've not attended any parties held here. No auto pay for monthly bills, it seems. Parking is tough - their own lot is small and street side can be challenging due to pump it up being across the street. read more

My daughters started attending classes at Tumble Town when they were tots; They eventually graduated to the big gym, working their way up through the class levels, enjoying every minute. We've also hosted multiple birthday parties events in the main gym, all big successes. Now that my 9-yr old daughter has forsaken gymnastics for team sports like soccer, basketball and softball, we're only here half as much. My youngest is still a regular student, but if she ever decides otherwise, I admit I'd start to feel a little verklempt. Sure it's a tiny bit dated; Plus the viewing area is spartan; And yeah, OK, the entire place can smell like old sweat on warmer days. It's a gym, for god's sakes! But what a great resource for young kids learning to deal with their balance, their growing bodies, and their self-esteem. Tips and Tricks: - Peet's coffee only two blocks away; Great to have during those weekend, morning classes - Available seating in the upstairs viewing area is limited. But you can grab a folding chair back by the trophys - Makes a great place for a birthday party, especially in rainy months. Kids get to blow off steam and get some exercise. Camp not as advertised! Quit on first day, no refund, despite dishonest sales pitch over phone. Daycare for small kids, not gymnastics for 12 year olds. Summer camp advertised "girls 6-13", and they assured me that there were lots of 10 year olds. My 12 year old daughter was put in a class with 8 year olds doing gymnastic activities like "coloring with glitter" and running in circles. She was too tall for the bars or trapeze. (Gym smells bad too). They either should have adapted something to her to participate or told us that they didn't have an appropriate program. Instead, they said it would be wonderful, and she would be with girls her age and level. When we went in the next morning to quit, they said "sometimes they have 10 year olds" and basically said good-bye without even asking our names. They accepted our payment happily, and they were even happier when we quit! read more

I went to San Mateo Gymnastic Center for a kids' birthday party. The party was large, so the kids were divided into two groups. The gal who worked with our group was nice and seemed to work well with young kids. My son was even a little scared about one of the swings and she encouraged him to do it. 1 star off: The woman who works at the front entrance was not friendly at all. I arrived late to the party and she did not provide any instructions for me. I asked her where the party was and she answered, "Inside." I also asked her where the restroom is and she answered, "Inside." I had no idea which direction to go. 1 star off: This gym smells! Sure, it is a gym and people sweat, but usually gyms have some ventilation, right? I did not like breathing in there...and I am not even talking about the restroom. read more

My daughter goes here almost for 3 years now and she is happy with her instructors and we are too. The tuition is not that expensive and she loves it. The parking situation is good and they have big parking lot behind the building. If you are late with the payments they won't bother you all the time like some other companies does. My daughter has been at SMG for years as a competitive gymnast, although she started at 4 years old in the rec program. The coaches are skilled, as evidenced by the number of gymnasts who make the NorCal States team at every level. SMG is a great place if your child is truly interested in excelling at gymnastics, as they will build a strong foundation of skills that are critical as they move up. The coaches create a strong sense of team, with emphasis on the older kids mentoring and encouraging the younger ones. The girls on her team are extremely supportive of each other and have strong bonds in and outside the gym. Unlike other gyms in the bay area, girls who have graduated are encouraged to come back on breaks from college to work out, creating a sense of family within the team. Girls who are interested in pursuing gymnastics in college drive miles to SMG, because they know they can get the skills they need to secure college scholarships. All three seniors on the Level 10 team this year have spots at colleges of their choice. SMG alumni are competing at UCLA, University of Florida, LSU, Washington, UC Davis, and the high school seniors are headed to Cal, Yale and Penn. This gym is not optimized for the parents; it is all about the kids. Yes, it is not fancy, it smells like sweat, and the viewing area is often crowded. Because of the competitive success, they do have long waiting lists. But, the coaches care about the kids, and they are particularly careful to ensure they are safe as they try out challenging new skills. It is important to understand what you want out of the gymnastics program, and pick the program that best fits the needs of your family. But if your kid has a passion for gymnastics and wants to compete to win, SMG is a great place. read more

I really really hate giving this place 2 stars because I do like the teachers that my daughter has for her morning gym class she has been going since September she likes it and has made friends. HOWEVER where this place fails MISERABLY is the cleanliness of the facility as well as the RUDEST front desk staff I have ever experienced in my life. If I was the owner of this place their would be a mass firing. I do not know what the problem is BUT eVeRY SINgle time I hand over my check - I receive no thank you, no smile,no greeting and just no kind of reaction so much so that if it happens to me again this morning I am going to have to say something. Every time I walk in I say good morning and receive grunts...if you do not enjoy working there then leave but I understand that with that kind of crappy attitude no one would hire them. Their is one woman in particular { longish red hair} who is particularly cranky...All I have heard from her is complaining and bitching so much so that I no longer even acknowledge her presence. I hope the owner takes time to read through these reviews because it looks like in the last few months the reviews for this place have gotten worse and worse. read more

This review is not for the classes as I have yet to be able to register my 4 yo. The afternoon classes has a long wait list. I signed up for the waitlist back in June and still no word. This is not the issue as I understand that these classes usually have a wait. The one-star rating is for the front desk. She is rude, dismissive, curt, negative, lazy, self-absorbed and incompetent. Overall, she lacks common curtesy and human decency. I don't know how she can continue to work there despite all these qualities. Save the $20/hr or whatever amount she gets paid and hire someone else. However I think she is doing the gym a major disservice by being there. Poor attitude is not changeable. You can hire someone who is eager to learn, provide good customer service and will do much better in the long run. Bad vibes. read more

Our girls have been going to SMG for over 8 years. We recently left. The gym places 1st in alot of competitions but they seem to avoid Airborne, which is just as good. My review is about the facility. Thousands of dollars from monthly fees & we've never seen any type of upgrade to the facility. If you goto any other gym in the Bay Area, they seem to spend their money back into the gym. This place does not, it took them 6 years to get a big fan in the gym & 1 year to install it. This blurb is not so much about the dedicated coaches but to the judgmental senior staff, owners and office crew, who seem to have a skewed, unprofessional and personal agenda. A friend of mine who was assaulted directly in front of the entrance to San Mateo Gymnastics whereas parents witnessed and reported the incident to the office staff and the owner an older wandering about women who seems to be more concerned with her own reputation then helping its clubs members'. Parents rushed in after the assault on my friend and told office staff and little old Betty and asked that the police or sheriffs be called for an assault which just occurred. Instead of responding as a concerned business they pulled the blinds closed hid behind their glass door and acted like they didn't see, hear or want to deal with any evil!! This would have been fine if they had stuck to their guns and "REALLY" not wanted to be involved and that would have been that but that is not what happened! Apparently, Betty had an acquaintance with the aggressor of the assault on my friend whose mom just happened to be a retired cop or something and Mrs. Dirty Harry spoke with Betty the Owner and cried a river about her poor daughter being mixed up and provoked to punch another individual. Then to put a cherry on it all and what truly was "out of line" was that Betty the Owner helped Mrs. Dirty Harry by writing a B.S. statement of an incident that at first she wanted to have no part of but when her friend walked in looking for a ghost witness to substantiate her daughter not being a total whack job, she felt it perfectly normal to take it upon herself and write a substantiating, insert "LIE" here, account which is basically rewarding the Cop Kid for their deplorable behavior which has probably been the way Mrs. Dirty Harry has been walked on her whole life by her disrespectful kid!!! Bottom line is that if these are the kind of individuals in charge that have no moralistic character or integrity and are more concerned about who is doing the best cartwheels instead of someone getting their face punched right outside their businesses window then maybe you ought to think about your child's personal welfare and what decision these individuals would make to insure the safety of your child. read more

We have been to three other gyms on the Peninsula in the past several years and feel lucky to have finally found a home at San Mateo Gymnastics. My daughter has been in the Rec program here for less than a year and has really improved her skills during that short time. We have had three different coaches and all are attentive, engaging, and provide corrections necessary to the safe practice of gymnastics. The competitive program is the best in the area. read more

My daughters, now 8 and 5, have been taking gymnastics at the main gym and Tumble Town practically since birth, starting with the mommy and me classes and moving up through the levels over the years. I have probably paid more than $10,000-$15,000 for classes, annual registration fees, open gym , summer camps, camp aftercare and so on. Many of the coaches and teachers are wonderful. The facilities are good, if slightly dated. The smell from the industrial enterprise next door is sometimes overwhelming. We have been nothing if not ultra-loyal, repeat customers, but after years of giving SMG my business, I feel I get little in return except constant fee hikes and the unshakable feeling that this place cares more about money than anything. Yes, I understand that SMG is a for-profit enterprise. They need to make money. But honestly, I've had years to observe their notion of "customer service" and they really could benefit from a tutorial on how to at least PRETEND that they care about more than squeezing as much money as possible out of the parents. My girls are entrenched and it has been difficult to convince them to try another gym, but Peninsula Gymnastics in San Mateo is looking ever more appealing. I would switch even if the cost were the same in the hopes that the administration there would just be a little nicer about it all. read more

It's always the teachers and coaches that make the place and this gym has the best coaches around. We're new to the world of gymnastics and my daughter has been tried ballet and dance. This was the only sport that she wanted to do after all the trial lessons and practices. She now practices almost daily with different coaches. We are so lucky that we found a gym that she loves and never hesitates to suit up and learn! And the coaches adore her. You can see their enthusiasm for the sport is rubbing off on her. We went to a birthday party for the first time on Sunday. It was a fun party. My kids are 4 and 5 years old. They had so much fun jumping, swinging, and tumbling. The staff was very good with the young and diverse ages of the party. Some of the kids were 2, but the staff was kind and helped direct the kids to wait in line and how to participate. Lunch and Cake was upstairs. This area could use a little updating. It seems like an afterthought to have us up there. I think this area is more for storage. It would be nice if they cleaned this area up a little. There is a locking half door at the top of the stairs so we didn't have to worry about the kids and the stairs. There was lots of parking and even though it is in an industrial area, it feels safe. Overall, this is a great location to have a gymnastics party. read more

San Mateo Gymnastics has two buildings back to back with each other. Tumble Town is the name of the one for the younger kids, and it has it's own building behind the main gym. Tumble Town is a large warehouse space that has been professionally adapted to a gym - complete with a proper gymnastic floor (soft for landing on). There's tons of room here. There's lots of different gymnastics equipment for the kids to use - bars, rings, mats, tumble track etc. I've been taking my son for a year and a half and he loves San Mateo Gymnastics. He has a motivated and enthusiastic teacher who really puts lots of energy into her instruction. Most classes end with play time in the elaborate castle that has been constructed with tunnels, passages, a slide, pit of foam blocks, and other things for the kids to explore. The business is well organized - but be warned, there are certain rules and policies relating to payments that are strictly enforced. Stick within the rules and there are no hassles here (no late payments and provide 2 weeks notice if you want to pullout for a while). There are other rules relating to attendance, make up classes, participation, clothing, and more. Don't be worried about the fiberglass factory next door (as discussed in another review) since you can simply park out the front on Old County Road and steer clear of that fiberglass place if it is a concern to you. I would have given them 5 stars if they weren't so stringent with their various and many rules. There are things they could do to make the business a little more customer friendly. However, from my child's point of view, it is 5 stars all the way, he LOVES it. read more

My daughter, 4, participated in a planned group outing here. The instructors were very attentive, but it was a divided group scenario, so often a child would stray from their group and join another. Eventually they were returned to the proper group. Everyone got a chance to try everything. In this case, the moms were required to "assist" when needed. A lot of the time spent was waiting for your turn, but, hey, that's life. The environment was very much typical gymnastics gym, however, the stink of chemical odor was at some times overwhelming. I see now that there is a fiberglass factory next door, but at the time I thought it was a car repainting company. It was that bad. Now, after an hour, the smell was barely perceptible, but only because I'd gotten used to it and ended up with a headache later that day. Anyone who claims the smell isn't a big deal has only become deadened to it over time. The location in general is a bit dodgy and I would be hesitant to take an evening class there. To update this one. I didn't check my yelp much. Just found there was a unread message 6 month ago from the business owner. In the message she didn't apologize for her staff teacher yelled on my daughter and just repeated the same lies and threatening message. With this kind of owner, how would you expect a fair and good guidance to your kids from teachers there? As no matter how wrong they did, the owner will only try to lie and cover her staff. Without professionalism, the only way they treat the kids is yelling. Just saw another message posted 2 month ago from another parent. You can tell SMG do not do any training to their staff, do not have any rule and discipline to their teachers and do not care about kids and kids' confidence. When things happen, they just try to lie to cover their mistake, threaten parents and send threatening message. Honestly I do not see SMG does any better than any other gymnastics program. The key is teachers, especially for young kids. Parents need the encouragement and building confidence for their kids, not yelling. If yelling is the only way SMG treats kids, I strongly urge parents to reconsider. read more

This review is long overdue. My daughter has been taking gymnastics here for the past year and a half. She has really improved in her time here. Their coaching staff and facilities are top notch. Coach Jeff has a wonderful way of engaging his students. He pushes them hard and gives personal attention and corrections to each girl. He balances this by bringing laughter and fun into the mix while pushing them to do their best. My daughter has not only grown as a gymnast but I have noticed increased work ethic and confidence. Sitting here right now at the 601 Harbor gym. To start with the lack of assistance at the front desk should have been our first clue. The lady at the front was too busy and distracted by her phone to offer any real assistance. "Sorry we came in" and it only has gotten worse as the class started. Can't believe the absolute disgusting way this "teacher" is talking to these 2/3 year olds. Not to mention the fact that she is rude, disengaged and clearly bored. Sure wish we could give a "0" stars. This place came as a recommendation of a neighbor, as soon as we get home we will find out if her kids have been with this "teacher". Instruction is good now that they've cut down on the instructor turnover. Front desk worker (who might be the owner) acts like she is super annoyed with the smallest question or ask. Facility is terrible... Miserable actually. Since they've consolidated into one space it's over crowded and dirty. Child ready to move up? The payment system is atrocious and so is their customer service. We paid online using their system before the deadline, but I guess it took a few days for the payment to process, and apparently they added a late fee when it looked like we paid late (even though we didn't!). I say apparently since we didn't find out for a couple months when they finally decided to inform us. Of course they waited long enough for a second late fee to show up for some reason. After clearly describing the issue to their front desk, they couldn't care less and refused to remove either of the late fees. Fine, if you don't want to remove the late fee for an issue with your system, then we'll be removing our child from any future classes, and we will not be sending our second child here ever. It's not about the money but rather the principal of the issue and the lack of care for your customers. read more

This review is of the summer camp. When I asked my daughter what would she like to do this summer, the immediate response was "Gymnastics at SMG"! She already spent 2 weeks there this year and is ready for more. I've also added another week in August again since she liked it so much and insisted on additional time. This is her 3rd year at SMG Summer camp and still very excited and happy to be there. Key highlights: * Affordable camp * Offer afternoon/early morning care * Lots of positive energy from staff * Fun, fun, fun!!! * Kids return home tired but happy and ready to jump the following day! * Every Friday show their acquired skills to the parents. This place is all about the $, in my experience. There have been good teachers and not so good teachers over the years my daughter has been here. The one thing that has remained the same is the attitude. Parents don't hear anything from them unless they are raising rates, we've already missed the deadline for a payment (usually if we have to unexpectedly miss a lesson as payment is in person) or they want to remind people of their rules yet again (flyer sent home with kids in the latter case). Now, I wouldn't have had my daughter continue to go there if there were no redeeming value- I think it's good for her and she enjoys pushing herself and using her body. But I'm really looking forward to the day when she is done with gymnastics. read more

My daughter started at Tumble Town and moved over to the main gym a couple of months ago. Overall I was disappointed in San Mateo Gymnastics. There was no attempt to welcome the child to the new gym. No one was even at the front desk when we arrived on her first day. My daughter didn't know where to line up for her class and then the teacher told her where she "should be" before realizing that it was her first class. I rarely ever saw her teacher smile or let alone ever compliment a child. She had no contact with the parents. The gym is covered with tournament banners and trophy cases. It's a bit much in way of self-glorification. I feel the main emphasis and attention is on the competitive team. My daughter definitely has some gymnastic skills and capabilities but her love of gymnastics has somewhat faded. We have decided to withdraw from the school. Your child will learn some skills at this school but the atmosphere of a wanna be Olympic training center takes away the joy of the sport. read more

So far - so good! My daughter joined first in their tumbling class held at Tumble Town a little over a month ago, while she was wait listed for gymnastics. She loves to dance and play sports, but flips and cart wheels have always left her scared. So it turned out to be great that she started with tumbling. She is learning to do bridge kick-overs, cart wheels, hand stands, and working on her flexibility. She is still nervous of falling, so she has yet to keep her legs straight, but I'm sure once she masters her handstands without falling the rest will come quickly! She finally started the gymnastics class and as she started in the middle of the girls being tested, she is kind of going through that process rather than being taught just yet. I'm sure once they finish up, she will be on the beams, bars, and on her way to becoming a gymnast! Yes, they do have banners hanging as one other person wrote, but as we weren't looking for just a fun playtime gym class - the banners help me to know that if my daughter has the drive and focus, she is in the right place. From what I've seen of the Teachers, they do push the kids and remind them that this isn't a play date. U are here to learn and I think that is the attitude they should have in any situation. You give it your all and don't half "donkey" it just because u might not see yourself going anywhere with the skills obtained. If anyone has noticed someone giving more attention to those training, perhaps it's because they know those are the ones that are there to really learn and not just play and feed into Mommy's' inner desire to have her child be socially accepted by everyone else that is inundating their kids with activities they have no desire to pursue just so they can tell the other mommies their kids too are busy m-f from 9-5 (what a way to make a living) o wait, these r kids not mini adults.... What was I thinking! He he ;) Anywho, before I go offending people ( too late u think?) Just know that my daughter's goal is not championships, so that as no appeal, but don't knock an organization for their passion and their accomplishments! At least I know this isn't some small mom and pop gym class. Please be careful with enrolling for gym classes with San Mateo gymnastics. They will make you a "member" and automatically bill you month-after-month in the name of "reserving a spot" for you. My daughter attended a gym class in June. We went on vacation and when we came back, we were billed for July and August. I spoke to a lady called "Arlene" and she said that we are being charged because they are "reserving a spot" for us. Every other summer class that my daughter attended did not have this shady business practice - you reserve a spot and pay for a particular class (not some auto-billing scam). This place has an industrial/warehouse feel and did not give me good vibes to being with. I hope you are happy with my $67.50 SM gymnastics because I will never be a customer of yours again. I am making a complaint to BBB about this business as well. read more
