I recently had a terrible experience at this facility with my daughter. After reading similar reviews, I realize this was not an isolated incident. My daughter has attended several classes here, and she has complained to me about the constant switching of coaches, which has made her feel uncomfortable. At her age, she wants to have some familiarity with her coach and build a relationship with them. Completely understandable. The coaches appear to be young, with some being attentive while others seem disengaged, even using their phones during her class. This is understandable to some degree with teenage coaches, but the lack of proper management is alarming. Initially, I wasn't sure who the manager was, and when I asked to speak to one, I was told she was unavailable, handling something in the office. I politely waited, but after about 20 minutes, she never came out, so I had to leave. I was given the manager's name, Charisse, but she appeared to be laughing and joking with others while I was waiting, making no effort to address my concerns and come out to speak with me. The worst and most unprofessional part was during my next (and last) visit, when I made a point to speak with the manager, Charisse. She demanded I speak with her outside, for reasons unknown (maybe to avoid being in front of other parents). She was incredibly rude and unprofessional, refusing to listen to the concerns my daughter had the courage to bring up. Instead, she mocked me and belittled my daughter's skillset, claiming that if she didn't like the coaching changes, she should look elsewhere because they didn't need our business. I was shocked by this situation. I strongly urge all parents to reconsider entrusting their children to this poorly managed establishment. As Charisse advised, please look elsewhere - this organization does not need YOUR business. (This happened a while ago but held off on posting a review in hopes of improvement.) I also know of a ton of families who have switched gyms for similar situations. Management needs to address the unprofessionalism of this manager and begin to have a more routine coaching schedule for the gymnasts to feel comfortable. read more

We went to re-register my daughter today. She'd been attending their courses for about 5-6 months. She was in teacher Nicole's class at Level 2. When I gave birth in May, my daughter couldn't attend. Frankly, I didn't even know we needed to call. The woman registering was so rude and unwilling, acting like "Why didn't you let me know? Your reasoning doesn't concern me." I couldn't believe it. I came with my newborn baby because my daughter wanted to register. Apparently, this course is saturated with students; they don't really care about the students there. And I am not your child you cannot shouted at me! There are plenty of courses in this area, so I drove all the way there with my newborn baby because my daughter wanted to re-register. But this woman will definitely make you lose even more students. Edit: I appreciate your response, but I'd like to clarify my side. I had just given birth, which made it difficult to manage communication, but that doesn't excuse the discourteous attitude from your staff. I only received one email and no follow-up. The real issue was not holding a spot -- we had already attended for 5-6 months. The problem was the staff's attitude, which felt not only rude but also discriminatory. In the previous term, when we took a break before summer and returned, the staff member who helped us then was kind and never mentioned any issue. Coming from the Parks & Recreation program, we also had never been told about such requirements. This time, however, your staff spoke in a scolding manner, as if addressing a child, which was very disappointing. What I expected was simply acknowledgment that this behavior was inappropriate. If I could give a zero star I would give a minus zero. This place is not welcoming, full of heartless teachers. They are extremely strict with mask policy even when the State dropped it however I've never seen them cleaning or wiping anything at the facility. The place is dirty and the its always SUPER OVERCROWDED! From my personal experienced I wasted my time from signing up, looking for parking, and getting in touch with anyone who could help me to cancellation. To be honest, I think the experience with this gymnastic is totally depending on the teachers. My daughter goes to this gymnastic every week, and we are in teacher Justine's class, which I highly recommend if you are signing up with young kids or toddlers, just stick with teacher Justine! -- unlike most of the gymnastic teachers/instructors, he's not strict with kids, he's very friendly and welcoming, and creative with how to keep little ones engaged and being entertained. Kids sometimes go wild and not follow the instructions, but he's always very tolerant and nice. I've observed other teachers/instructors, I feel like most of them are very young like students, and not very well trained, the supervision is not as good as most of us expected as parents, the management was just ok, but not good enough for me to give high ratings based on what it actually is. But I would say, my kids and I really appreciate teacher Justine, and my daughter doesn't like any other teacher's class, if it's not teacher Justine, we wouldn't go there anymore. read more

This is a great gym overall I have came here for many years. I love this gym so much ,coaches are awesome ,they have safe equipment and the coaches always watch the kids and want them and help them to improve. They can be strict but are awesome teachers they even have little kids classes they have many classes so siblings can do different classes and levels. They also provide higher level classes. And the teachers are very experienced and know what they are doing. They have an amazing summer camp this camp is good for recreational gymnasts or new comers to gymnastics. I would not recommend for team or non recreational student because they could possibly get bored. You should ask them about step up camp if you wanted to. The reviews that the gym is bad is 100% wrong this is an awesome gym I would definitely recommend this gym for kids over other ones in the Bay Area. read more

My daughter has been going to classes here for over a year and I can say that while it's not perfect, it is a very good gym with solid instruction, development of good camaraderie and friendly and committed instructors. Do I wish it smelled a bit better sometimes? Yes, but it's a gym. Really, try smelling a kid's hockey bag. Do I wish the recitals / performances had better audience seating and I didn't have to pay? Yes, but if the alternative is to pay more for classes, a few bucks for a recital is fine. I like they use the whole space for instruction... even if we're crowded in occasionally to watch. Maybe there's a more pristine, perfect, fragrant and upscale gymnastics gym. If that's what you need, go there. If you want good instruction with people who care and have committed their time to make your kid happy and skilled, Peninsula is the place. read more

My daughter attended a while back. She was in a recreational class and not on a team. The entire focus of this place is on their teams. They do not care obout the other kids. They did not have a consistent teacher for my daughter most of the time. Even when the regular teachers were present, they will from time to time, help with the team coaching and someone else who is not familiar with my daughter will take over her class. The worst was when we were abscent from class for a max of 2-3 classes while I was having a baby - and they neglected to tell us that the skills evaluation had taken place and everyone else in my daughter's class had moved on to the next class. Ultimately, I felt like Peninsula would best meet her needs with the various programs offered. They evaluated her abilities & properly placed her on a team. Bonus that two friends highly recommended Peninsula Gymnastics - San Mateo because their girls were having a great experience. We started in the fall and my daughter was warmly welcomed by the team & coaches. I observed the classes & teams and noted the organization and flow was very smooth with so many kids. My daughter's coaches are consistent, structured, detailed, challenging yet kind. Throughout the season, with patience & detail, the coaches prepared the gymnasts for each event at their meets. At the end of this 1st season, I compared my daughter's previous year's experience (2 yrs Rec gymnastics- No one properly explained the programs offered at a different gymnastics facility) to only 6 months training at Peninsula Gymnastics - San Mateo . This is a very big gymnastics space with 6 or 8 interesting floor spaces with gymnastics infrastructure for kids to take classes or practice. Classes seems averagely priced at $20-$25 an hour depending on how regularly your child attends. When we walk in on a Saturday there is about 80 kids there from age 3 to 18 years old, so lots to see from the parent pavilion. The front desk is usually unattended and there isn't much information around so it can feel chaotic on the first time you go for a class. Initially I didn't know who our teacher was or what to do, but I persisted because I figured all of these other kids parents have worked it out. If you want to talk to someone you really have to grab a coach as they walk by and they usually they direct you to the website anyway. Venue has bathrooms, drink and snack machines. Lockers for shoes and water bottles etc. So far we like the experience for our children! read more

Stay away...the reviews are accurate. I emailed to sign my daughter up, and it took several times to get in touch with someone. That alone should have been a red flag. Parking is terrible, the facility is large, but you're completely shoulder to shoulder with other parents, and the classes are run by teenagers, who seem to have very little training, and could care less about the kids. It feels more like babysitting in a gym than an actual teacher, teaching a class. If you're looking to actually learn gymnastics, I would not come here. If you just want your child to be able to run around, with very little structure, I supposed this place is fine (if you can find parking). My daughter went to the Peninsula gymnastics and she was very happy. After 1 year of training she's doing perfect handstands, flips and other. She is in that class twice a week for an hour. All the staff are extremely friendly and work with the children. I have no complaints for Peninsula gymnastics I definitely recommend them read more

The instructors here are excellent. The administrators, not so much. Just deal with the signup process and your kids will have access to some of the best gym teachers in the state at a very affordable price. That is, if you want your kids to learn GYMNASTICS. If all you want is an exercise class, go to junior gym or some other place. This is a GYMNASTICS school. This GYMNASTICS SCHOOL consistently produces State and Regional champions in all levels. The star is for the facility, which is clean. The staff is the problem here, at least, for the younger kids. The administrators are in different at best. Nothing welcoming. We only took the toddler class twice and decided to cancel our membership. Some instructors are ok with kids, but one of them was very authoritarian. Instead of trying to manage the classes so older and younger kids don't clash, he just tried to order the kids around. He doesn't believe adults have the responsibility to create the right learning environment for young kids but thinks their responsibility is to control the kids. When I tried to give him constructive feedback, he said "how long have you been in this business?" Basically, this is just the way it is. He might be particularly "old school", but I got the general sense that the instructors don't understand the child development. I don't know what is like for the order kids, but felt that it is not a fun, nurturing and loving place for toddlers. read more

Spoke to the front desk and they agreed with me that the student shouldn't be teaching my daughter but refused to give the teacher another aid. Having gone to this gym for a long time as a child, I can confidently say that you should not send your kid here. At least, do not put them on the competitive tracks. The coaches are extremely strict, to the point of causing future trauma for your kids. I have specific memories of being cursed at, told I was stupid and talentless, and more, at the wonderful age of eight. Please, please, please do not send your kid here. I will say though, the birthday parties and other things (recreational classes, etc.) seem fine, I just highly do not recommend putting your child on the competitive teams unless they are willing to pay for your kid's therapy bills in the future. My son is happy to come to his class at this gym. He is six, and has some difficulties with impulse control and following rules, so i think this less 'warm and fuzzy' approach to learning is appropriate for his age. Reading other reviews, i agree that toddlers should be at 'my gym' or 'junior gym' type places. It has the feel of an older set up, not sure i'd do a birthday party here. Its more like a professional gym than a kids hang out. This is NOT at bad area at all. Yes, parking is bad. Best part for me: the administration are super flexible admin me switching days and adding days. Great price and good care for drop in summer time camp - i just booked now for tomorrow all day - $40. Hosted a birthday party here and the instructed time was great- the kids had a great time! 2 negatives was that one- the time to serve food and cake is just not sufficient. two- the new chairs they had purchased for the party rooms were cheap and top heavy. I had 4 kids fall over!!! One after another!! It was scary! I let the front desk know about the hazard and they simply said " the principal is already aware, but we brought them already... so we cant do anything about them.." It's reassuring to see that we are one of the many families complaining and providing constructive / negative feedback. My daughter has been going every week for a year. Teacher turnover has been pretty high, we changed teachers almost every 3/4 weeks and that impacted the continuity of development and learning. Coach Justin is the only real teacher, who knows what he is doing with young kids and care about correcting them. All other personnel have been a waste of time and money. They rarely showed how to perform an exercise, some of them do not seem to be in a gymnastics career at all, they rarely correct the kids on their errors. They basically get going to let the hour go by. An hour at the park doing monkey bars is more effective than a month at peninsula gymnastics. On top of this the personnel is extremely disorganized and disrespectful. I would rather give money to people who deserve it and put dedication in their job and what they do instead of wasting it here. read more

This place is horribly disorganized and impossible to deal with. If your daughter is 5 or over, they make you come for a 3 minute "evaluation" where they barely watch for any signs of skills. If some kid can do a push up, they ask them to try the accelerated class. What?? Recreational classes have no tracking or means of making sure more-advanced students are in the right class. The teachers (college kids) finish their class and BOLT off the gym floor to check their phones. The teachers at the recreational level are completely checked-out, distant, uncaring about the students, and the kids never learn a thing. They repeat the same exercises week in and week out but with NO instruction. They're just told to "do a back bend" or "do a cartwheel". If they can't do it, oh well. The teachers won't give instruction and the kids never progress. I have yet to figure out how any kids ever make a competitive team or change class levels - there are no guidelines for what they are looking for or what tricks kids need to do. (I honestly think the only way to make a team is to start when you're 3 years old and they promote you just because you've been there so long and they don't want to hear the parents complain.) They have quarterly evaluations but for NO purpose. They mean NOTHING and there is no feedback on what they need to work on or how the teacher will actually help them. After a year of classes here, we pulled our daughter. She is crazy athletic, flexible, and loves gymnastics but this place sucked all that out of her. One last gripe, after milking you for $78/month for classes, you also have to PAY TO WATCH the gymnastics shows 3 times a year!! REALLY???? You have to PAY for your child to be IN the show and then they charge admission for families to watch. Unreal. AND they have the nerve to have a "tip jar" on the desk for instructors! REALLY???? I have been to many gymnastics training centers in the past and by far I have to say that this one is the best. The coaches (recreational and competitive) are professional, diligent, and hardworking. Although this place may not have substantial parking, nor be the cleanest, all that matters is the experience for my kids. From pre-school classes to competitive programs, each class is dynamic and fun for all ages. What I appreciate most is that I am able to take my 8 year old daughter for an excel class, while my 4 year old son can take a boys level 1 class all at the same time. Despite the poor reviews on Yelp, I decided to give this place a chance because my daughter really loves gymnastics. Well, shame on me, but I should have listened to the Yelp reviews. This is the most disorganized gym you will ever go to! So here is my story... My daughter loves gymnastics & was super excited to attend the classes here. She went to 2 classes with no problem. However, one week, the gym was short on teachers and switched the teachers around. My daughter's teacher took on a different group. My daughters class was just standing there clueless because no body took the time to tell them about the change. After a long time of shuffling occurred, her class was jumbled together with another teacher. Unfortunately, teacher Kayla was not very patient nor very nice to the girls. She was actually down right mean and was very demeaning to the kids. I was so upset that I spoke to the director about this teacher's behavior and the lack of communication and disorganization. Due to this horrible experience, my daughter does not want to continue with classes there for fear of the "mean" teacher. This gym is supposed to be a place that kids feel safe to learn and socialize, but instead it is just an old filthy gym that doesn't manage their staff or classes very well. Don't waste your money or time on this facility as they do not invest any attention or care into the children that attend the classes. read more

I just had a horrible experience w/peninsula gymnastics summer camp. My son is 5 and half and he follows group instructions well. Long story short, during camp, my son fell down and bumped the back of his head onto mirror on the wall. They never call me right away, there was no incident report. I would have been less nervous & upset if it had not been his head. I only found out about it because my son was crying when I went to pick him up. I had to push to find out where the mirror was, it turned out there were 4 big 3-feet crack on the mirror!!! I was upset beyond belief! We had to see a doctor right away, thankfully my son is OK. What if he had a real head injury?? The owner told me the mirror was for the dancing class, but if it's so close to the camp equipments, if someone falls, it could cause a lot of harm for kids. It's total negligence on their part. I would not have complained about poor parking or smell or front desk. I won't recommend Peninsula Gym camp for anyone. read more

Just had my daughter's 4th birthday party there. It's 1 1/2 hours for the party. 1 hour of being on the gym floor and 30 minutes in the party room. We haven't taken classes there before. I just found them on the Internet. Pro: no limitation on the food that you can bring. They have a fridge and freezer to keep your food. Pro: They have 2 instructors that help the kids go through an obstacle course. Pro: The party has full use of most of the equipment there. Obviously for 4 year olds, we didn't use the balance beam. Pro: They provide the paper products for your party. Con: The first time you walk in the place smells of sweat. They have a bunch of windows but they weren't open. Con: Parking lot is small. Con: They don't have a cart to bring your food if you can't find parking nearby. Con: They don't have a cart to put presents. I had to check everywhere to see if we left any presents. Con: Once your party is over, you're pointed to your party room and the instructors are on to the next party. Con: They don't have anyone in the party room helping you set up, serve cake and clean up. You do it yourself. Probably wouldn't go there again. read more
