My brother and had dinner around 4pm. Service was good and food was very good. Onion rings were crispy and not oily. Cole slaw was A1. I got a rice pudding that looked so good that I forgot to take a pic. It was warm with whipped cream and cinnamon on top. Delicious!One puzzling menu item was Fish and Mac ONLY available on Friday. Decided to stop in for a late breakfast to support local, sat myself. The server gave me a lunch menu. When I asked if they served breakfast all day she said yes, do you know what you want or do you want a menu? I said I'd like a menu, to which as she turned to go get one she hadn't fixed her face, which clearly showed her irritation as she was walking away. Now this may be because she has obvious knee issues, IDK. I let her know I'd be leaving and that I saw her eye roll. We were in the Belleville area, looking for somewhere to have lunch after picking sunflowers at Debuck's. My sister noticed Sam's place, so we decided to try it. As we walked to our table, I noticed that everyone's meals looked delicious. And we learned pretty quickly that it's the kind of place that has a lot of regulars. Someone was even in there with a dog! The iced tea was wonderful. We were hot and thirsty, and it was very refreshing. I ordered the turkey club, and my sister got the chicken pita. I was very pleasantly surprised to see that it was "real" turkey in my sandwich, rather than the lunch meat kind. It was really good, and while I considered taking some of it home, instead, I ate every bite. My sister also enjoyed her sandwich. We both also appreciated that we could have side salads instead of fries for $1.29. read more

This the old Red Apple downtown Belleville, owner former chef bought place a decade ago. Place is huge and old school nice. I wish I could give ZERO stars... OMG! So... after months of waiting. I finally decided to go to Sam's Place on Main Street to treat my Fiancé to breakfast. I've been going there for 15 years and I'm sad to say that today was a horrible experience. I know that with Covid causing shortages for employees but come on now BASIC CUSTOMER SERVICE doesn't have to go out of the window. My waitress was extremely rude, she is the head waitress in this establishment and been there for many years...and not to mention the food quality went down hill as well. I finally decided to give this place a try even though it looked like a glorified Denny's especially given the fact that I have seen Gordon Food Service trucks there in the past. They did not disappoint. The cook can't even cook an egg. If you ask for over easy you get Sunnyside because he doesn't know how to do over easy. Apparently it's too complicated of an instruction. They have new menus but not sure if the food is any different. The menus are nice. All I know is I had the Meti-Omelette and it was the best Omelette I have had in 20 years. It was soo good. This was a 5 star restaurant when I ate there alone. But when I brought my 9 yr old Granddaughter we were not welcome. Why I say this is because when receiving our meal I was handed the bill right away. Then as the bill was handed our waitress asked my 9 yr old granddaughter if she is going to pay the bill or will she do the dishes? I had ordered the hot Turkey sandwich with mashed potatoes which didn't taste as good as before. And my granddaughters sausage's were so raw that when I squeezed them they actually looked like ground beef red from a tube. And her eggs were super runny. So I asked another waitress for the manager and our original waitress came instead. I told her MANAGER. I explained to manager the problem and couldn't help to notice the guys seated at counter laughing and snickering doing the side eye at us. The manager was apologetic BUT Never offered a discount. The meal should have been free!! My granddaughter never took a bite and I took 3 bites of mine even though it tasted weird. So I'm sure the guys seated at the counter and the waitress were happy to hear I will never come back to this restaurant. Even before I lived in Belleville, my grandparents (also not from Belleville) would make a special trip w/ us to the city to go to Mike's Red Apple. There's was really no reason why they did, the Red Apple was nothing especially unique except that it was one of the few restaurants that really embodied a town, local color and all. When we moved to Belleville later on, the Red Apple became our breakfast spot, known for it's insanely low priced not listed on the menu breakfast special. It was a secret code for all us locals. Now the Red Apple is gone, sad as we all are, we have Sam's Place. It sounded familiar to me and then I realized a local Livonia coney was branching out. Almost nothing has changed except the menu and the prices. The food I ordered was very bland, coney island food tends to but usually there's something there that makes it nice, the menu looked sparse and unoriginal. The staff, which looks new, needs to work on their friendliness. She wasn't rude but wasn't especially nice either. We paid a little less than double what we would have paid at the Red Apple. The sign out front still says the Red Apple (that needs to change pronto) but sadly only a skeleton of the restaurant remains. read more

Sam's is essentially a breakfast place. Think Coney Island but without the hot dogs. It says it's a family style restaurant but since most of their customers are in bed at 4pm it's never very busy for dinner. Seriously. You come in here any day of the week and you would think it was either a pit stop for a casino tour bus, a bingo hall or a field trip from Shady Acres. If any place should have a need for an automatic defibrillator, Sam's is it. Sam's is nothing special and I suspect quite a few people would call it disgusting. And it would be tough to argue with those people. The décor is straight out of 1960, it's dirty and I'm pretty sure the waitresses came with the building. But, it's literally 2 minutes round trip from my house, it's hard to screw up breakfast and it's dirt cheap. $8.99 will get you 2 breakfast specials with more food than you can eat. So, if you find yourself rolling through town and need some fuel for your day Sam's is a safe choice. Just keep your expectations in check and try not to touch anything and you will be fine. Yeah they now charge for soup or salad with a meal, have minimized the portions and have raised their prices. You can only have one refill on a smallish sized pop. The waitstaff has had a bunch of turnaround too. It was not stellar, just cheap, convenient and reliable. Yeah, I'm kinda done when I can eat at a really quality place with better portions and free soup/salad for a mere few dollars more. Diners are a dime a dozen really. Stopped by here while in Michigan and was surprised to see Mikes Red Apple now replaced with Sam's Place. The outside and inside remain pretty much the same but the close attachmen of the restaurant to the area now seems gone. Mike's Red Apple was never a great restaurant but it tied in closely with local flavors and was a consistent place to stop. The food is under casual diner fair. We ordered the polish plates and salads. The vinegar that came with the salad contained flies, unchecked by the waitress before bringing it out to our table. I ended up replacing it with ranch and unlike most diner ranch this tasted watery and stretched. The polish food was OK. The pierogies were deep fried, was not expecting that. Not very traditional.The filling lacked any real flavor, they offer cheese, potato, and sauerkraut.. The cabbage roll was similarly flavorless, with the sauce tasting like plain tomatoes as per Liz's review. One party at our table had a hair in their pierogi - we let that one slide. The cleanliness has gone downhill and the food is lacking in flavor. This location is geared towards the older crowd and probably fits that niche well. As for everyone else, skip it. read more

This used to be Red Apple - there was an ownership change to my understanding. Breakfast - can't beat it. The food is good. Portions are excellent. The price is great. One day me and my dad ate there - he had an omelet and I had a traditional breakfast - we both had coffee - the bill was barely over $10. We felt bad and tipped the staff really good. Felt like we jipped them or something. I usually stop in for breakfast once a month (on avg). We usually get a traditional breakfast or omelet. They know my 3 year old now and the staff is great with him. He always gets pancakes and the staff is very friendly with all of us - but particularly my son. I had a dinner 1 time when the place was the Red Apple and it wasn't ideal. Not the worst - but nothing I felt I would recommend or desire myself to go back to. The perk was (at the time) they chipped in a free desert ice cream which is good for the kids. But, the dinner was very routine and had a processed feel to it. So maybe that is different now since the change in ownership? I just haven't desired to try it out again yet. I give this place an average 3 star score. Some places have a niche and to me - it is their breakfast and morning environment. I can't go to bat for them much beyond that. But, I will continue to say - support local business. read more

In my slow but unending quest for good breakfasts I decided to give this place a spin. I'd meant to try them when they were called Red Apple but never made it there. The spinach & feta omelet I ordered had the spinach and feta mixed in with the eggs. This isn't a crime, as far as my tummy is concerned. The spinach was fresh leaves, a bonus. The feta, however, was bland and tasteless. The accompanying hash browns and toast were ok, nothing special. Part way through the omelet I bit into something crunchy. I assumed it was an eggshell, which usually squicks me right out, but I was hungry enough that I kept going. Then i got another crunchy bite. And another. I flipped the omelet over to find the underside was burnt. Now, most of you would send it right back. And I thought about it, I really did. But then I realized, "What kind of kitchen would send out a burnt omelet in the first place?" There are mistakes like forgetting an ingredient change or removal, and then there's just sloppy work. So this review is only for BREAKFAST. Have been here about 10 times I can say that Sams has the BEST breakfast in the Belleville area. The french toast was so good, that I joined Yelp just to write about it. Very, very buttery though. I'm sure its horrible for me but it really is excellent. Eggs, sausage are both also very good. Not so greasy like at other diners that I have been to. So far Sams is one of the best restaurants in Belleville. A city that definitively needs one. read more

Rude and racist! This is absolutely my first and last time going here. I did a pick up order and the woman taking my order was rude and uninterested in helping answer any of my questions. When I went to pick up the order, I walked into the restaurant and instantly received stares from everyone. The cook even came around to see who was at the door after the waitress walked out and so rudely greeted me and told me my food wasn't ready yet. Another waitress came and rung up my food. I placed my credit card into her hand to pay. She then places it onto the counter for me to pick up and asks me if "there's a problem". I politely mentioned that she could have placed the card back into my hand. She laughs and doesn't even hand me my food, she leaves it on the counter for me to pick up! The food definitely wasn't worth the hassle. Also, the waitress and the cook wasn't wearing gloves or a mask and didn't keep a 6-foot distance. Okay, Pancakes this morning was good around 11 am this morning. However, the service was awful. The lady with the black hair around the age of 40 could care less about customer service. She was not friendly and didn't smile. You don't like your job, get a different job. Then, a person a my table asked If someone could taste (little sample cup) the gravy before I buy for the biscuits and gravy(maybe I won't like it). The lady said snidely, we don't just give it away for free. Really??!! I know, that why I want she wanted to a sample please. Then after breakfast my mother was filling out the info on the credit card slip and not 1 second after she filled it out the waitress said "GIVE ME THE PEN BACK'. OMG. I live in Belleville and have been ordering carry out breakfast for many years. I was always happy with the prices, food and portions. Once the ownership changed a few years ago, the food is still good, portions are large. Most of the waitstaff has been there for many years and most are very friendly. However, since the new owner took over, the prices have gone sky high. I have been overcharged several times. The food is good and I want to support a local business, but there have been so many discrepancies on my bill, I can no longer go there. What should be a simple adding of my bill results in many, many additional charges. One day I was charged $30 for two, carry out omelettes that should have been $15. Watch your bill. read more

This place occupies a very unique spot in American cuisine that is incredibly difficult to find at the present- traditional dishes, that are made from scratch. Their turkey club is not made with lunch meat. The strawberry pancakes and waffles have fresh fruit. When they have city chicken on the menu, it is amazing. It serves the same dishes as a lot of restaurants around Detroit, but its use of fresh ingredients sets it apart. This is one of the best places I have found in the area for comfort food. read more

I just visited "Sam's" for the last time with my family. Since we've never been there before... We were seated at the large booth next to the rest rooms. When I say next to the rest rooms, I mean so close that you can smell any recent intestinal distress that may have recently occurred in the men's OR ladies room... And we could hear the current gastronomic activities in situ replete with grunt or groan... after which we were treated to a blast of foul smelling air when the door was opened. As a bonus, I was seated in such a manner that I made eye contact with each patron whilst they exited the men's OR ladies room. As for the food, no idea. We went to the rest room at WALMART down the road to clean up afterward. I'd suggest a floor plan change and ventilation upgrade if the place didn't look recently remodeled... So apparently that's just the "charm" of SAMs in Belleville. read more
