I really wanted to like this place, especially given its prime location in downtown Milford, but the entire experience felt tired and uninspired. The atmosphere is like going to Grandma's house--except Grandma forgot how to cook and decided to decorate with politics instead of personality. The menu feels dated, the decor feels dated, and the food has absolutely no flair. Everything we tried was bland and unappetizing. The tacos were honestly less enjoyable than Taco Bell, and the pierogies were a complete disappointment. A Polish-Mexican concept could be creative and exciting, but this felt like neither cuisine was done particularly well. An adorable, classy little restaurant combining Polish and Mexican cuisine. We visited with another couple on a Tuesday, before 4:00 so we would have plenty of time for bingo night in Commerce. With maybe two other tables the restaurant was near empty. Still, it took more than thirty minutes to make and serve a combination platter and two entrees. It's always disappointing to watch a group of people enter after you and eat half their meal before yours arrives. Thank goodness for great friends and conversation to pacify the situation. What a gem. I've heard about this place up in Milford and I wanted to stop in to check out their menu. To say that I was impressed is an understatement. One of my favorite soups is dill pickle soup, and that is what they were serving today. Unfortunately, I did not get a photo because it disappeared too quickly. It was that good. Then, the owner, Lisa, came out and started sharing the story of the restaurant a little bit and she was amazing. I loved her passion and dedication to quality. So unusual! Polish, American, and Mexican rolled into one restaurant. They had me with polish. It was worth the 30 minute easy ride through the back roads, such as they are in Michigan. But we had a nice, unfancy meal, in a homey family setting. Had to chuckle at the family with 3 or 4 little ones who kept knocking the teapots and cookie jars off the shelves behind them. They advertise Polish, American, and Mexican, but shouldn't. They have a small menu and most items are Polish. The others are perks. Food was great, except the ham and potatos were a little salty. And the green beans were bland. But that's ok because the pierogi were awesome, ham was still good, kraut was so good! My husband had the golumpki and said it was just as good as what my family makes. Service was good. The servers were sweet and took good care of us. They had live entertainment that made me smile. Czapski's makes you feel excited and slaps a smile on your face like you've just arrived for dinner at Mom's or Grandma's. The friendly staff treated us like family when we stepped into the cozy, homelike decorated interior. The problems of the outside world disappeared instantly the minute I smelled the delicious aromas and saw the full, large, plates of hot food being set down in front of smiling, hungry guests. This "homey" experience is the real thing because I instantly felt nostalgic for the place, and it was my first visit! I was already thinking about my return visit, and hadn't even sat down. Plain and simple, Corporate America can NEVER duplicate the experience you're going to have at Czapski's because the owner is present and wearing an apron. My brother and I love Polish food and our minds were blown from the first bite. My brother had his palate all set for the smoked kielbasa, kraut, city chicken, and cabbage roll on the "Polish Wedding Plate." I ordered that Plate, and my selections were meatballs over egg noodles, cabbage roll, and city chicken. Both of our plates had mashed potatoes and gravy. We ordered a separate side of 4 pierogis to split. The food looked soooo appealing and delicious the second our attentive, friendly waitstaff member, Mackenzie, set down our plates. My brother was in love from his first bite and looked at me in disbelief because he was already tasting "5-Stars" from the first forkful. I was across the table having my own experience, thanking the angels for the talent in the kitchen and legacy of Lisa, the Polish-American owner's, authentic recipes and culinary prowess that created this entire "Czapski's Kitchen" experience that I was having. I think I blacked out because the last thing I remembered was reaching for the city chicken, and the next was seeing the remnant of a large wooden skewer that was picked clean. OMG, that was delicious and I need more! No worries. The plate was still full from the generous portions we were served. The remaining hot meal of the cabbage roll, mashed potatoes, meatballs over egg noodles, and pierogis was totally delicious, each with their own satisfying textures, seasoning, and flavors. The food is created using the highest of quality ingredients, and by the right people who truly care about their craft and customer. Every morsel was so satisfying and full of flavor for each offering on my combo plate. I know I am repeating myself here, but the food is that good. I took home a doggy bag of some uneaten pierogis and a fresh piece of the indulgent-looking, multi-layered carrot cake for the next day. Chose this restaurant on a Wednesday evening. Kitschy cute decor with polka music, but not too loud. Were seated immediately and brought drinks quickly. My friend had a Polish lager, which she enjoyed and I had lemonade. I started with dill pickle soup, which was thick, creamy and absolutely delicious. I ordered the pork roast, which came with mashed potatoes, gravy, kraut, green beans and applesauce. My pork was so tender no knife was needed. Great seasoning on all the vegetables- I brought the kraut home for my husband because I don't eat it. Enormous slice of carrot cake to go, which was moist and not too sweet. Came in on a Sunday afternoon around 1pm. Not too packed, but I'm sure it was early for Sunday dinner. The team was lovely and welcomed me as soon as I hit the door. Walking in, the sound of bouncy music (not too loud, but enough to know it's there. Myron Floren from his album, "24 Polka's Greatest Hits") was playing in the background. Christmas decor was still up, but it kept the atmosphere light and refreshing with the winter chill. Wide selection of alcohol beverages, wine, and other spirits. They also have some beer by the can if you're interested in the cold case. I had ordered the following for a decent tasting: 1. Pierogi Polish Dinner 2. Meatball dinner. 3. And the combination plate with City Chicken, cabbage rolls, and kielbasa. 4. Beef brisket dinner. (All dinners included mash with gravy, veggie, kapusta, and bread with butter) 5. Dill Pickle soup (no chicken noodle today ) And for dessert: 1. Apple pie 2. Lava cake 3. 6 layer carrot cake. Placed my order at about 1:10. Desserts were prepped by 1:19, and the food was ready for pickup around 1:35. 16 minutes for all the above. Awesome timing. All the dinners came with mash and gravy. First off, I've met several a potato that NEEDED gravy because of lack of flavor. This one did not. The gravy is what I would consider ice cream to my slice of cake; a nice addition, but NOT necessary. Vegetable today was green beans. Not sure if they cycle different veg, but these were good. They were fresh Meatballs: tender, full of flavor, and moist. Homemade and you can tell. Noodles: your basic egg noodle, but NECESSARY with these meatballs to feel like Grandma cooked your meal. Pierogi: sautéed nicely, tender and filled with potato cheese. You can taste the butter they were cooked in. A+ with a little sour cream. City chicken: not a big fan, but the other folks I had at the tasting were very impressed. Browned nicely, tender, and spiced well. Cabbage rolls: my mother used to make them like this. A nice taste of home with some of the mash along side it. Beef Brisket: this went the fastest. Tender, pull-apart an a well cooked piece of meat. I enjoyed the...2 bites I got. Lol. Dill pickle soup: I've tasted DPS at several places: Pickles and Rye, a couple of other delis, even at the Wawel Polish restaurant in Sterling heights. Nothing stands up to this. Dill, creamy, warm, a soup you can either enjoy with crackers, or bathe in. Whatever pleases you. Lovely on a cold day. Apple pie and chocolate lava cake were decent, well worth the price. But the real winner was the carrot cake. Moist, cream cheese frosting in between each layer, and enough walnuts for you to know, someone took their time with this. My bill? $83. BUT, I ordered 4 dinners, soup, and three desserts. Well worth it if you want home cooked and do NOT want to do it yourAll in all, a lovely place to go for a nice Sunday dinner with family and some libations. Not to mention, any other day of the week. The REAL thing! I feel like I walked into a neighbor's home, welcomed, and well fed. The waitress and cook (who comes out to chat with diners) add greatly to the ambience, which is, well amazingly Polish. There is a collection of antique salt and pepper shakers which are deployed and in use at the tables. I feel like the chatchkeys are authentic family heirlooms. I tried the dinner sampler which was reasonably priced for what you get. The city chicken is pork disguised as chicken: a relic from the depression. The folks who own and work here love their food and this makes this a lovely experience. Desserts include nearly everything curated from the best of local bakeries. Every time we go here we fall in love all over again. It's like stepping into your grandmother's house (or at least my grandmother's house), complete with a curio cabinet and family pictures all over. Do yourself a favor - order the combo plate and get it with pierogis, guampky (stuffed cabbage rolls), and meatballs. It's delicious. I mean like "best Polish food you've had in forever" delicious. You should also plan to leave with food, the portions are very generous, and if you're like us, you always end up getting some guampky or pierogis to go! They also have Mexican food, which I'm sure is great, but I've never strayed from the Polish food and never intend to! I don't want to forget - the staff and owners are also awesome. I was in downtown milford with the two littles and this looked like a family friendly place to stop in for lunch. The parking lot was big and I didn't want to parallel park during the busy time where the farmers market was taking place. Unfortunately... the food was not good even with it's generous portions and fair pricing. Maybe because Thanksgiving just passed with savory food fresh on my mind, but their mashed potatoes lacked... that whipped buttery soul. The gravy tasted instant? The green beans were soggy. To be honest, the combination plate with one simple pierogi, one stuffed cabbage and a scoop of egg noodles with meat sauce felt like they were over-boiled in a crock pot ...over-waiting to be served. Our server was kind. She made some chocolate milk for the kids when it wasn't on the menu and she tried to help me keep them quite with some highlighters and lined paper. These days, good service is very hard to find. But that is not the case at Czapski's. My husband and I came in around 40 minutes before they closed, and the staff was extremely kind and welcoming. I was at this restaurant last Friday and truly felt awful for the people seated at a nearby table as I have never witnessed something handled so wrongly by the staff at a restaurant ever!!! One of the customers at the table was about 3/4 of the way through her meal and then found a dead fly in the sauce on her plate. She mentioned it to the server and the server offered to bring her a napkin. Not sure what the napkin was for... for the customer to take the fly out of her plate?? not sure... For obvious reasons, the customer with the dead fly in her plate, asked the server to take her plate away because of course that ruined her appetite to say the least. She asked the server to not charge her for her meal, which should've been a given! The server didn't respond and a few minutes later a woman (possibly an owner or someone from the kitchen staff?) went to her table and was almost in the customers face raising her voice where we (and everyone in the restaurant) could clearly hear her say " so you ate 3/4 of your meal and just because you found a dead fly on your plate you want it for free" and then the restaurant staff yelled across the restaurant to the server and said " OK, take her meal off their bill" and then she said still in a loud voice where the entire restaurant could hear..."and I have a very big flyswatter if anyone else find a fly on your plate... or something similar to that effect! I have never written a bad review nor have I felt the need to as restaurants and staff are doing their best and we have to have patience and understanding however , this was so above and beyond terrible of how a restaurant should ever treat a customer and I been sitting on this one all weekend and just felt that it had to be said. This is our first time here. The atmosphere is cozy with Knick knacks on the window sills just like grandma's house. The food was good, but other Polish restaurants we have been to were considerably better. The menu is a bit confusing (my opinion). I also felt the prices didn't reflect the quality of the meal. Sloppy joes and egg salad sandwiches were $12.95. A hot dog was $10.95. Our waitress was attentive, so no complaints there. All in all not a bad place to go as you do get a lot of food. I like the food a lot but I ordered take out and they said 20 min, arrived 25 min later and ended up waiting for 40 min when I got there. There was no good nature compensation for my wait and not only did I pre pay $85 I tipped 20% for takeout. Service is ridiculous. At least offer a free dessert or something . If you are looking for Polish food, this is your place. Really does look and smell like a Polish grandmas house. Staff are very nice. They promote themselves as Polish, Mexican, American food. That is a mistake. Stick with the Polish food. If you grew up with it, you will love it. If not, maybe you will like it? I tried the burritos. Way too salty and had a "stale" taste of reheated meat. It was covered in a generous layer of cheese, yet was very dry. The rice was bland and oddly not Mexican and the beans seemed scooped from a can. Overpriced and not very good. I do NOT recommend the Mexican portion of this menu. They do have other portions as sides or stand alone--so if you don't want the mashed potatoes, gravy, cabbage and/or green beans, you can get just a cabbage roll or just pierogi. I almost didn't visit Czapski's because of all the negative reviews. I'm soooooo glad I went with my gut and went to check it out myself! I can't say enough good things about the food and owner/staff there. I had a very lovely experience. I had the sausage that came with mash potatoes, gravy, green beans and sauerkraut. It was OUT OF THIS WORLD! I highly recommend this place. I applaud Lisa (owner) for taking the challenge to start a business in such hard location.
