Everything is great about Sam's! They make the donuts ON SITE! The BACON MAPLE BAR with REAL BACON is really excellent! I had a delicious Old Fashioned donut, gave the husband the Bacon Maple Bar donut! He said "it tastes like a pancake breakfast with bacon" !! It does! This place has been around for 30 years! Needed to pick up donuts on. Sunday afternoon. I rushed to find a place as donut shops tend to close by 2pm. Luckily, I found Sam's Donuts-open until 630pm! At least that the info on Yelp. So I arrive, excited they're open and there's still a good selection of donuts. Now I didn't want t hold my breath on anything fresh so I grab quite a few to ensure something's would be edible. The lady at the counter was pleasant and friendly for an afternoon. The store has the donuts, tea and coffee but also doubles as a convenience store with some other packaged goods, snacks and beverages. So I grab an apple fritter, buttermilk bar and tons of maple items: maple bar, maple crueler, and maple old fashioned. There was a massive chocolate bar I had to ask about. It's twice the size of your standard donut bars. The attendant stated it like a celebratory donut instead of a birthday cake! When I finally tried a bite, I was pleasantly surprised the donuts tasted fresh! Like all of them! To get a fresh tasting donut on a Sunday afternoon feels like finding a $20 bill on the street. I just want to say, WOW. The team is top notch. I was in this morning and dropped my wallet. Looking all Day I went back to see if maybe I dropped it in Sam's Donuts, sure thing. Walked in and saw a very sweet lady standing behind the counter. I end up getting a sugar raise cake and a round chocolate filling doughnut. My pops got himself some twist glaze and a glaze raise doughnut. Sugar: nicely coated evenly with good amount of sugar. Round chocolate custard filling: I'm very picky with how the top look when baker dipped the icings on the cake. So mines came out with a smooth texture. Which is great. I've seen a few places where the icing is all bumpy or has an even coat. Lady is very nice and friendly. She sparks up a smile! That can warm everyone day when they walk up in the store. $7.00 for a dozen of raise cake or minis dozen for $1.20. What a deal! Perks: They have Lottery and scratchers. When I set to planning a Twin Peaks costume party the first thing I did was look for a business that could provide an abundance for donuts that were reasonably priced. I gave a 6 days notice that I'd be coming and they had 12 dozen of my favorite varieties waiting for me prior to arrival. My favorite at Sam's is the delightful glazed blueberry cake donut. The glaze coating is fairly thin so it lets the fruitiness of the dough shine through. I chose a cross section of doughnut styles so I could get a read on style, consistency and above all, flavor. The Glazed Old Fashion: Firm give to crust, not overly sweet and appropriately fatty (this style lends itself to be very greasy or too dry at times though Sam's is a solid B) The Crueller.: Lite, airy and lightly sweet. Good ratio of eggy and creamy. Quite enjoyable and a definite retry A- Cake Glazed Rainbow Sprinkle: sweet powder sugar icing, a bit too much since it overwhelms the well-done cake doughnut underneath. Great for the kid or the one saccharin child stuck inside us all. It definitely needs coffee to interrupt the pungency. C+ Buttermilk Bar-Glazed: very airy texture for a BUttermilk Bar, though the blueberry note is peculiar and I think not intentional. C/C+. Overall, decent first experience. I did take out, so if you plan on eating there: the place is dated and aged. It's a combo of doughnuts, mini mart and a few tables left from the old Winchels days. It's in the industrial part of Santa Rosa, next to Cash n Carry and our local dive bar, The Zoo. If you're a person who can't bare a slightly dated, not overly sparkly clean or the panhandlers bumming change, cigarettes or what have you, go elsewhere.
