The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because some items can be hit or miss with availability, and a few sections get crowded during peak hours. TL;DR Sam's Club is struggling. Check your postal mail or credit card issuer for free or heavily discounted membership offers if you're considering signing up. Since it replaced the old Ford plant back in 2010, this Sam's Club at Edison Towne Square has been Costco's only real direct competitor in Edison (since the BJ's across Rt 1 has no gas station and is on life support). Now that the dust has settled, there isn't much of a contest any more. Both the pricing and the selection are noticeably subpar compared to Costco's: you won't find the kind of premium curated quality that Costco has or the same variety of local, organic, and ethnic foods either. The cereal aisle is pretty horrifying as the selection is mostly candy-flavored. My overall impression is that the inventory caters more to the Walmart crowd than to the Whole Foods crowd. A lot of the durable goods are priced closer to MSRP than to wholesale pricing, which makes me wonder if customers just aren't bothering to compare prices. I see a lot of frequent small discounts on high-denomination gift cards like Southwest or Uber, but other wholesalers and retailers also have these. Fortunately, this location still has the $5 rotisserie chicken that Costco is known for, and unlike Costco the food court here has somehow still managed to suppress any noticeable price increases to its menu, e.g. vanilla froyo is still $1. As a bonus, this location also has free wi-fi. I've been to this location during all times of the day, and it's a total ghost town every time compared to Costco. I even came two days before Thanksgiving and there were virtually no lines at customer service or checkout, which is very telling. Masking is a crapshoot among customers, although most store associates appear to be complying. Unlike at Costco, you don't need a membership card to walk in through the front door and look around. Members can use self-checkout or scan-and-go to avoid waiting altogether. The customer experience is probably slightly less stressful as a result, though I personally don't expect to be renewing my club membership when it expires this year. read more

Let me start out by saying that I love the variety and scan & go offered at Sam's Club vs Costco. However, Costco is 10/10 with their customer service. Whereas Sam's club in Edison specifically is lacking. We were looking for Enfamil gentlease baby formula. The app said we can order and they would have it ready in a couple hours. But we wanted to get it ourselves since we were already shopping. Asked an associate, he was pleasant and said that sometimes formula is available in the front of the store. So my husband went to check. Didn't see anything but asked a worker. She was dismissive. My husband asked for a manager which she claimed to be one. (Young, petite, mixed. Didn't get her name) my husband asked if she could verify if any was in stock. She said she was busy and didn't have time. Not sure who put this woman in a position of oversight but she's horrible. I'm a club member !!!! My job offered employees the choice of various "bulk shopping" stores to choose from as an employee benefit (1st year membership free). Due to the location I chose Sam's Club; great choice. The club was very easy to navigate through. I especially loved the huge produce and dairy rooms. Unlike other stores I've visited where refrigerators stored the dairy and produce products at this location it's a temperature controlled room. The prices were very reasonable even cheaper than my local supermarket for certain items. It's clean, quite, well stocked and organized, smooth check out and the app is pretty darn cool!! While I was shopping I ran into the tire center, let's just say I will be getting 4 tires installed next week at better price than a tire shop. Very friendly customer service workers, helpful and knowledgeable of the facility. Overall I am happy that I chose Sam's Club and making it my new bulk shopping home. read more

Sam's club is my favorite place to buy bulk. I feel it's much quieter than Costco, with a selection that is just as good as BJs. On weekends you can try a plethora of samples, but they also have some sample carts for weekday shoppers too. I feel I get a great value when I shop here, especially in their bakery. You can't beat their pricing for cupcakes and sheet cakes. You can also have them make one from a selected theme in the book by the bakery department and they will make it to order, for the same pricing as the grab and go items! I also enjoy using the scan and go app. I have reusable bags so as I shop, I scan the items I am purchasing on the app and drop them right into my shopping bags. Once I'm done shopping I check out right on the app, my card is saved so I only need to give the three digit security code, and I'm able to leave, no hassle of waiting on a long line! This Sam's, at one point a few years back, had the convince of fewer people than Costco. It's now gotten busier, maybe due to the cheaper Sam's membership prices? Things are still a little disorganized and some staff looked stressed out. The self checkout line setup is confusing and not much room to put down scanned items. No Apple/Samsung pay. Staff eyes every item you scanned. Have your receipt ready for the exit employee to scan receipt and items on the cart. Costco have a self checkout food court too that won't charge you for the wrong item like it happened to me at Sam's on several times. read more

This place is very good. Most of the prices here are competitive, but that depends on what you're trying to get. Some of the prices here are cheaper than BJ's, like a jar of mixed nuts. They even carried some items that BJ's doesn't sell anymore, like my favorite snack, Combos! That's a PLUS. Customer service was just okay. I spent all day calling the fire department and the front desk and no one will answer Tire department wants to take three hours to install tires AND schedule repair 1 week in advance. No compassion or help for a member who is stopping on the highway every 30 minutes to refill the tire When asked about the phone calls. Apparently the eye doctors just give out eyeglasses prescriptions without signing the prescription! Who knew i could just waste my hard earned money as a disabled woman who just needed to see. When called and informed about their negligence of handing out unsigned prescriptions, they said they couldnt help me today when today is my only day off for a good couple weeks. Can't contact the doctor with the phone number they have for employment records to fill one measly prescription for one patient they lacked to properly take care of. The doctor couldnt even be bothered to come in to the exam either, it was done through telehealth and still with the least amount of work she had to do in her whole life, couldnt manage to even electronically sign the prescription before handing it to a paying patient. Disgusting customer service and lack of empathy. 0/10 would never recommend to anyone. Not everyone has the luxury of having multiple days off to waste on one task because the employee couldnt do her job properly. This store sells many things and has a robust meat section. Their steaks and other butcher items are great cuts. They prices are really great. Thanks to whoever designated this store should get a gasoline station! The store is rather typical and the staff are friendly and it's great to be able to pick up a slice of pizza or a whole take-and-bake pie on the cheap. That's always the great thing about Sam's Club. You pay your dues, and they might seem high, but you get those savings back quickly, especially when you buy gasoline. I had to ask how to get to the station on the way out. At many stores, it's rather close but it was practically on route 1 and that was quite a distance from the store. It was busy but things moved quickly. I wasn't sure how it would work since this was the first time buying gas at a Sam's Club in Jersey. The price was about 12 cents cheaper than on the turnpike. The attendant was really friendly, but I think I might have confused him for a minute. He scanned both cards much more quickly than I ever do, so it must be some custom setup for NJ. Every time you go there they have people trying to get you to sign up for a credit card , then after you check out you have these guys on the way out who try to sell you home improvements, you say no and they still follow you to your car, and if your lucky enough to get away they then have people outside the store asking for donations. It was a nice day to shop for some groceries, but unfortunately, my experience wasn't so nice. First of all, be careful when you shop for tomatoes, I found a case with mold growing on the stems. Secondly, most of the employees have no respect for customers. The lady standing by the hand/face cream section bothered my family saying "I have to give everyone in the store a sample of this", and I quickly turned away. Lastly, the checkout. The lines were so long and nobody bothered to open a new register. When we finally got to check out, the cashier named Alvaro seemed a bit off, like he was pissed at the previous customer. When he was scanning our items, he yelled something like "...I will strangle you if you don't..." Then when he finished our order, he just gave us a blank stare.
