We stopped at Sammy's Trattoria before a show at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall, and this was the perfect pre-show dinner! Service: We arrived about an hour and a half before the show with a reservation and were seated immediately. Our server greeted us warmly right away, started us with water and bread, and recommended the Julia Salad. Think elevated Olive Garden salad, and I mean that in the BEST way . It was delicious! The service throughout our meal was truly impeccable. Our server, the bartender, and even another server all checked in on us. Sammy's is family-owned, and you can really tell the staff works as a team. Everyone was warm, attentive, and genuinely helpful. Food: Our table was a fun mix: a vegan, a vegetarian, and a regular-everything eater lol. Our server did an amazing job recommending dishes and modifications so everyone could enjoy their meal. I was especially excited to find out they offer gluten-free pasta, and even happier when it came out and actually tasted GOOD! We ordered: * Veal Marsala with a side of pasta and tomato sauce * Capellini Lula, modified without shrimp or cheese for our vegan * Jimmy's Seafood Fra Diavolo with gluten-free pasta for me Everything was delicious! Drinks: We also tried the Rum Punch, Hibiscus Margarita, and an Espresso Martini made with tequila. I love when a restaurant is willing to make a good tequila modification, and they nailed it! Atmosphere: The restaurant isn't huge, but there's plenty of room for both smaller parties and larger groups, plus a full bar with bar seating. It has that cozy, neighborhood Italian restaurant feel that makes you want to settle in and enjoy your meal. Between the delicious food, dietary accommodations, and outstanding service, Sammy's was a win all around. I'd absolutely recommend it and will happily dine here again whenever life takes me back to Baltimore! read more

Stopped here with a reservation for a table of 4. Located over Fed Hill, street parking via the park mobile app - Saturday night I didn't think they were charging but to be safe I paid 35¢ for parking. Walked in and were immediately sat at a large round table near the window. Bread and oil/garlic mix served to us. Our waitress was Malaurie, who was very nice and played along with our antics and dumb quips throughout the meal. We started with bruschetta, a pizza, meatballs and fried mozzarella. The bruschetta was a little different than the normal mixture - with capers and chopped olives in the tomatoes, atop thin baguette slices. Three to an order so we cut them in 2 to share amongst us. The margherita pizza was very good - not a coal fired or jazzy pizza, but the ingredients did all the talking. It came out piping so I had to wait but the flavor was great and I would recommend it. The fried mozz looked really good too - didn't try it personally. The meatballs were good - 2 to an order. I liked the flavor in them and the red sauce was very tangy and vine ripened with the flavor. For my entree I ordered the rigatoni vodka which was very good and came out fresh and hot. I asked for the sauce not spicy and it still had a slight kick which was good. As our dessert, we shared on of each of the items and passed them around the table: Chocolate cake which was tall and very rich, a sweet dense flavor and an easy order if you are looking for guidance. The lemon blueberry cake is the traditional lemon cream cakes in Italian places with the blueberry in it as well - very bright and light. Tiramisu was one of the best I have had - smaller piece by size but packed with flavor and very very good. Cannoli - only had a scoop of the cream and chips - but a good flavor. Large cannoli or mini are the options to order. Overall - I really liked this place. New place we have tried in Baltimore but could easily be a new spot to go on Saturdays. read more

Came with a friend on a weekday night and was seated immediately. It's a cute Italian restaurant. Upon being seated we got some bread :) We tried the hibiscus margarita and acai mule. Acai mule was my favorite. Got the calamari and I personally loved it. It's not crispy and they give generous pieces of squid. For entrees we got the Julia salad with grilled chicken and the pappardelle Alfredo. l loveddddd the salad and the pappardelle was a classic Alfredo sauce dish :) Would come back! read more

I have been going to Sammy's since its conception. Never have I ever received such a rude and uninviting welcome. We walked in like we always do and headed for the bar and this very rude older person approached me and asked if we had a reservation. I have never heard of a bar having reservations but oh well. It didn't sit well with me so we decided to go elsewhere where I would feel more comfortable. The hostess never said, "would you like a tables", or anything of the such. Her whole facial expression and attitude were very off putting. Anyway, not a good way to greet a guest I hope she learns something about hospitality 101. End of rant. I love this family but maybe they should make some changes. read more

Just wanted to thank the entire staff at Sammy's, and particularly our server, for hosting our rehearsal dinner this past Saturday. The layout, space, and food were all excellent, and the service was absolutely exceptional. Our server went above and beyond, handling our large group with ease and attentiveness. Many of our guests shared how much they enjoyed themselves, and we are confident there will be return visits from many of them. They even kindly packaged up the leftovers, which we are still enjoying! read more

When you step into this restaurant, you will be stepping back in time. It is like you step into 1994. It is dated but that nostalgia can be welcome sometime. We were at a party of seven and the service was OK. The menu offerings were OK. Most of the folks in my party thought their meals were just OK. I probably wouldn't return just because it was just a little too dated for my taste. The prices were great and if you do go, I highly recommend the chicken Calabrese, it was so yummy. read more

i came here for my friend's birthday with a reservation on a saturday. it seemed like it would be difficult to get seated without a res on a weekend. the host was a character and the servers were all really nice. other reviewers say the restaurant feels outdated, but i would say it feels more vintage (not a negative thing). we were served quickly, starting with complementary bread. the bread was really good; we ended up getting a second plate. the olive oil dip was fine. i preferred to use the bread as a vessel for sauce from my main dish. since they were out of the duck ravioli, i ordered the chicken francesce, which is similar to a chicken piccata. i opted for the broccoli as the accompaniment and asked for no cheese. the sauce was quite good; creamy and citrusy. it paired really nicely with the capers. the chicken was very tender and well cooked, although a little soggy (tends to be what happens for this kind of dish; no real qualms there). i was able to finish the whole dish without it sitting too heavily in my stomach. as someone who doesn't love italian food, i would come back to this place. one note: the prices for the mixed drinks were not on the menu when we went. my friend ordered a beverage that he said was just OK that ended up being 19 (nineteen) whole american US dollars. read more

Good service and atmosphere - seems like a nice joint. Unfortunately, I ordered the Alfredo pasta and chicken, and it was pretty bland. The chicken seemed like it was from the British school - boiled until grey. Appetizer mozzarella was great. read more

We made a last minute reservation for three on a Saturday night around 6:30 and we were easily accommodated. We only had an hour and a half and were able to get drinks, appetizers, and entrees- all within that time. We ordered the calamari and crab toast as appetizers and I'd say my favorite was the crab toast. The calamari was just okay. For our entrees we ordered the lobster and crab ravioli, pasta carbonara, and the duck ravioli. The duck ravioli was by far my favorite. It was seasoned so well. The restaurant was a very intimate setting and very welcoming. I will be back. read more

Excellent ambience. Great cuisine. Accommodating service. Great location. Arrived impromptu without reservations in what is obviously a well atended neighborhood favorite and the maitre found a way to promptly seat my wife and I. What's there not to endorse? Juan P Aguilar MD read more

I go here for the calamari. My kids got me hooked on this spot. The Italian is authentic and the atmosphere is perfect for a date.

First time eating here the food and service was exceptional. Felt like home, definitely would go back

I am leaving here fat and happy and warm. The waiter was great! Super attentive and speedy. The restaurant itself was cozy and welcoming! Very retro and Italian feeling. We sat upstairs and it was so cozy. It was nice being able to see the whole place. We didn't have a reservation, but thankfully there was an open table! Definitely recommend if you go on a weekend night! It was jumping. And for good reason. This is some of the best Italian food ive had in baltimore. The bread and oil? Oh my goooood. The baguette had a perfect crust and crumb was fluffy and dense and delicious. The oil was spicy and cheesy and rich. A perfect balance. I got the linguine in calm sauce and it knocked my socks off. There were so many actual clams in it I was shocked. It was lemony and spicy and creamy. My partner got the carbonara and he said it was phenomenal. I got the house Pinot noir and he got a chai old fashioned. read more

Picked this place as a short walk from The Lyric for an evening show. Booked a table for two on Open Table to be sure we had a reservation. Arrived early before dinner time rush on a Saturday. Initially, they wanted to seat us upstairs, where there was no AC, then we were ushered to the basement. I declined and was about to leave when they agreed to seat us on the main floor. Either diners call and request the main floor or they prefer to save the tables for the main rush. If reserving via OT, ask for the main floor. Staff are friendly and attentive. Food is really good and plentiful. It can get a little loud, but a good Italian if you're hungry read more

Don't book on Open Table because when you arrive they will tell you they don't use that app...and then say they can't accommodate you unless you want to sit at the bar. The lady at the front was rude, she acted as if I should have known I needed to call for a reservation and not use an app. We've been here before and have ordered take out. This experience with that level of rudeness will probably result in us not coming back. We left and headed to the Owl. read more

First time having Italian food in Baltimore. This place has charm and definitely has history behind it. You had your locals who come who were very pleasant. Nice family vibe inside. The waitresses were awesome. We liked them very much. I ordered The Alfredo with shrimp. Big portion of shrimp, It was the best I've ever had. Noodles seemed home made, Only thing is less olive oil in it for my preference. The Bread. Holy Jesus the Bread with their fresh garlic dip oil absolute heaven. Family style house salad was delish. I am so glad I finally made it to Sammy's. From the service to the food, I was completely and overly satisfied. I was thinking about my next visit before the bill even came. Our server was attentive, even on a packed night. He gave great suggestions. I ordered the Ravioli (Mushroom/Brown Butter Sage style) which I loved. I was full by the end of the meal, but could not pass on dessert. It was some sort of lemonberry cake with cheesecake as well. Either way, I would order a hundred slices, and never be tired of it. Sammy's is great for groups, date nights, girls night out, family affairs, and literally anything else you could think of because there is so much space. read more

Finally had a chance to check out Sammy's after being a bit Little Italy adventurer! Being walking distance from Little Italy makes it so easy to go there for dinner but Sammy's is worth the trek to Mt. Vernon!!!! The service is great- I love the unlimited bread service and the garlic-parm olive oil to dip it in is DIVINE!!!!! Seriously, we put it on EVERYTHING! The bruschetta was authentic and delish with the olives and capers. The burrata on the eggplant was unique and delish. The pasta was perfectly al dente- the vodka sauce being my fave! The mushroom sage sauce for the gnocchi was yummy as well. The pizza had a crisp bottom and great flavor. The eggplant parm was excellent! This was the perfect family style girls night! We also had a hibiscus marg, the limoncello spritz, and the bartender's creation of a mocktail for our pregnant friend! All drinks were incredible. Cannot wait to come back to try more items on the menu! read more

A neighborhood staple! Sammy's keeps you coming back with the delicious complimentary bread and oil, starter salad, and cozy friendly vibe. Came here again as a team this week. Ms Val was not here tonight so we definitely missed her. We sat in a basement like environment that made me feel like I was at a teenage party. It was nice to have a separate space as a large group but I definitely wouldn't want to sit here if I didn't come with a group. It felt like someone's parents were going to come down and get us in trouble or something. Service and food were good but everything was not as amazing as the first time. Ms Val seemed to really be an essential piece of the smooth family style but nevertheless all dishes came out and the staff was always available. The bread, salad, alla vodka pasta, and chicken parm are my favorites. Salmon was okay but nothing special. It was good but not as wowing as the first time. read more

Sammy's Trattoria - Best group accommodation with family style meal - Italian Near Me - Baltimore, Maryland

I've been to this location of Sammy's (there is another location in Hunt Valley) twice for dinner. Once over a year ago for dinner with a friend before the symphony, and then again last week for dinner with a larger group (7). Their menu is large, lots of Italian classics and specialties. On my most recent visit, I had and very much enjoyed their pappardelle bolognese, which was classic, simple, and totally delicious. I also tried my friend's chicken calabrese (chicken cutlet with assorted peppers, onions, potatoes, and roasted garlic), which was really good as well. I've had salads and buratta and other pastas, and everything I've tried has been really tasty. I really appreciate their Italian wine offerings as well - I had a lovely Montepulciano with dinner last week. The restaurant is old school (it's not chasing trends), but it's comfortable and classic. The service is also great (I sat at bar with a book for a while before my last dinner since I arrived early, and the staff at the bar were really friendly). Sammy's has been a Baltimore staple since 2006. Many dishes on the menu are named for regulars, including judges, since the restaurant is just a block or so away from the University of Baltimore School of Law. It's great for dinner before a symphony or a show at the Lyric, since they're both quickly within walking distance! Check it out. read more

I really wanted to love this place. The prices were good, the reviews seemed good, and it was close to The Lyric. We arrived a few minutes before our 6 pm reservation and were seated promptly at a two-top right next to the kitchen...and practically in the personal bubble of another two-top next to us, even though there were other two-tops on the restaurant open the whole time we were there. We were so close to the other table and the server literally couldn't get between the tables and had to reach over my husband's shoulder to pass us things. We tried to order the $40 bottle of house Super Tuscan and were immediately told that we should order the $48 bottle because the house one is awful. Um, then why is it on the menu? We ordered Judge Oshrine's eggplant because I love eggplant and burrata. The cheese looked more than standard melted mozzarella than burrata, and there was a thick layer of bitter rapini under it that made the dish hard to eat. I ordered the linguine con vongole with white sauce. Again, a disappointment -- it was so tart from lemon that I only ate a couple bites. Some salt and pepper would have balanced it but there were none on the table. My husband had the seafood fra diavolo. He said it was the good, and the bite of scallop that I stole was tasty. I ended with the tiramisu, which was amazing. Highly recommend. Overall, we spent $133+tip on a bottle of wine, an appetizer, two entrees, and a dessert, so I can't complain about the prices. And the service was very good (other than the weird wine thing, which wasn't done by our actual server.) Unfortunately, the cons outweigh the pros, so I can't imagine we'll go back. read more

Made a reservation since we were feeling nostalgic for that classic Italian American dinner that you don't quite get in the DMV. The dining room is definitely a bit loud, cramped, and the staff are true to the theme, but I can't say I had a bad dish. I got the papardelle with sausage added while my partner got a chicken dish I can't remember now. We also had bread to start (so warm, so good!) and got scallops as an app. We finished off with cake and a cannoli, and definitely brought home the leftovers from dinner because this was a heavy dinner. Gotta say though, as a Philly native, something about the Italians always feel like home and this was definitely one of those experiences. A spendy evening but we got our money's worth. read more

Started with the meatballs. We were seated by the kitchen and saw our meatballs sitting on the shelf for an extended period of time before we asked if they were ours...yes they were & now served cold. I ordered the pasta Luna which was so terrible it tasted like someone dipped a lemon wedge in black pepper and said now eat this. I sent it back and opted for eggplant parmigiana. Like a plate of slime. Equally as inedible as the pasta Luna. Took one bite and by then had lost any appetite I came with. I was charged for the entree even though I told the waitress how bad it was and obviously hadn't eaten more than one bite. The only thing that was good and served warm was the bread. Very disappointing and will never go back. read more

A fine place to eat but nothing special. I had the Duck Ravioli and a ginger ale. Complimentary bread (not fresh, not stale). I sat at the bar. The service was chaotic. We were seated and waited about 15 minutes before anyone came to our table. Finally.someone came to take out order and then right after someone else came to take our order. Then, three times in a row, we were brought items intended for other tables. We had to leave for a show before our entree arrived. Several other tables were clearly frustrated to be late for the show as well. Food was great. Also in the basement it was so loud it was uncomfortable. The two of us could barely hear each other at a normal speaking tone. I would go back on a weeknight, perhaps, if I knew there was no show nearby. read more

The service was okay. It was not very crowded on a weekday evening but it took a while to get them to acknowledge me at the bar. It got a little better as the evening went on, but they could improve. The tiramisu was just okay- not bad but not my favorite. It didn't have a strong enough coffee flavor for me & I feel like the layers weren't balanced. The risotto was cooked well & tasted great. I ordered it without scallops and it was still very fulfilling & flavorful. read more

Randomly picked this place for dinner. It's old school italian and it wasn't super packed on a Thursday night. We decided to split a calamari app, I got a white sauce vongole and my bf got an eggplant Parm. Calamari was interesting. It was fried up with bell peppers and onions and honestly I liked that spin on it. I liked my pasta vongole fine (maybe too much sauce if that's a thing?). My boyfriend didn't like his eggplant parm as much as he said it was a little too oily for his liking. Service was good, no issues there. This isn't located in the little Italy section of the city or else I would say there are maybe better options for Italian food. If in this area this was a good place to hit up for some comfort Italian food. read more

Great food in Mount Vernon. The main floor is two stories hight with lots of large round tables, they also have an upstairs balcony area, and - I recently discovered - a more intimate downstairs (with bar), too! It's a busy joint and the main area can definitely get loud, but it's got a great energy. I was surprised by how great the duck ravioli were (it's a really well composed and balanced dish), and the warm bread and dipping oil they serve every table is SO DELICIOUS. I've also gotten the eggplant caprese appetizer and spinach ravioli entree, which weren't bad. Looking forward to coming back and trying more on the menu (or just getting the duck ravioli)! read more

Came here for the first time and was pleasantly surprised! I'm not generally a huge fan of Italian food but the food was very good, and very reasonably priced. Customer service was excellent and attentive. We had a birthday in our group and they did the whole birthday cake slice with a candle as we sang to her. We were a large party of 10 and although there was a bit of a wait for our food, they got it all right and everyone enjoyed the food. Very cute decor. Portions are large enough for two meals, maybe even three. The only thing you may need to plan ahead for is parking! Since it was a Sunday evening, I was able to find free parking around the corner closer to University of Baltimore on Maryland Ave right across from Preston Hall. There is street parking but depending on the day/time it can be hard to find. I ordered the Papardelle Alfredo with Shrimp and Crab for $26, with a slice of chocolate cake that was so rich and delicious. I'm pretty sure gratuity is automatic for large parties as most restaurants do so keep that in mind. It's certainly possible to come here and get a meal for less than $30. I highly recommend and I would go back! read more

The house salad is always amazing. The dressing is cheesy and garlicky. The pasta in vodka sauce may have been the worst I have ever eaten. It's Valentine's Day! So as I'm driving to dinner I get a call from Sammy's, they are in the weeds and curious if I'm still coming. This should have been my clue but we forged ahead with the 60min trek. We arrive at our 6:30 tee time and are seated right away. After that the experience went south with spotty service, that wobbly table that requires 4 bar coasters and realizing our table was a last minute creative squeeze despite my reservation from last month. Food was mediocre in general. Bread and butter were great. We got the Sally Salad and split it...pretty good if you like that goat cheese. Also chose the muscles but they arrived at the same time Sally did so they got warm and were decent despite temp. By this time we're sorta content so split a dinner choice of Chicken Toni Tina that had some great cutlets but we thought the white sauce was bland and floury. Note: Side order of pasta rigatoni was nice and tasty. Skipped desert and then waited and waited for the check. It was a rough night for service and the place was stacked. Once we did check out the older gentleman serving as Host hinted that it was a bad night. He apologized and don't really need to but he knew the restaurant had shortcomings this Valentine's Day. read more

Came for dinner on Sunday evening with a few friends. Made reservation on open table although place was pretty empty when we got there. The bread they serve is absolutely delicious and was nice and warm. We all had some variation of wine, I was pleased with my choice. My entree was the vodka pasta & it was one of my favorite vodka pastas I've had!! They gave us a bowl of parm so of course I was liberal with that.
