Almost positive I got ripped off. I would love the mechanic shop to refute what I am about to say with transparency and show me that, no, I did not, in fact, get ripped off. Car: 2002 Toyota Corolla LE, 160K miles, 1 previous owner. Work done: oil leak, very severe $0 remove and replace valve cover gasket w/ valve cover replacement and PCV valve and engine degrease. leaking down the engine onto subframe components and dripping onto the floor. valve cover appear degraded from electrolysis. $1,456.32 remove & replace both CV axles. they have torn inner joint boots and leaking. $1251.29 coolant service -- had the wrong coolant in the car. how dangerous is this? $172. tune up: replace spark plugs, air filter, perform throttle body service, relearn idle, reset ignition and injection adaptive memory if done with the valve covers. $275.87. feels like the biggest rip off % wise lol total cost $3155.48. "Based on published repair-cost aggregators for a car in your Corolla's class, here's how each line item stacks up. Take this as a directional read, not a precise verdict. Valve cover gasket, valve cover replacement, PCV valve, degrease -- $1,456.32. RepairPal's own estimate for a 2002 Corolla valve cover gasket job (parts + labor) is roughly $344-$464. Swapping in a whole new valve cover instead of just the gasket adds maybe $100-$200 in parts, the PCV valve is a $10-$25 part, and an engine degrease might add another $75-$150 in labor. Even generously, a fair all-in price lands around $550-$750. What you paid is nearly double to almost triple that. Both CV axles -- $1,251.29. I brought my SUV to Sammy's, at 815 Hillsborough Ave in Tampa, for a small repair of a hose. Two days later, it breaks. I'm stranded in traffic. I take it back to them and 3 more things need to be fixed. They kept my car for 3 weeks. The day after I got it back, there were more complications than the original problem. I've taken my car back about 10x now. Each time they say they can't find the issue or can't hear the massive noises it makes. I drove with them and, like magic, the noises appeared. I brought my car to them Friday, They were supposed to call me at 2 or 3pm. No calls and when I try to contact them, they NEVER ANSWER THE PHONE! Today I went to their shop with a male neighbor of mine. The owners brother raised his voice at me in an attempt to intimidate me and was using profanity to deflect from their horrible work. He even stated how his brother commented that I just want to come and complain. I don't know anyone who decides to wadte the time in their lives to sit for hours in a filthy auto shop, just to complain. He also LIED about the parts they were supposed to replace. They should have fixed a head gasket, radiator hoses, and the timing chain. Sammy's brother, Jose, said they replaced my raidiator. WHAT FOR, WHY?!!! Long story longer, my car is still not fixed, I'm out $1,600, I have no money left to fix my car. The engine is about to die. I'm now about to take them to court. Sammy took in my wifes Ford Explorer for diagnosis and repair. His crew diagnosed it quickly, gave fast estimates on cost and completed the repairs quickly. Perhaps more important than quickly, It was done correctly. His explanations of the issues were spot on of what I understand of auto mechanics. I spent twelve years in the retail car business. I had a very good thought about Sammy's Auto. I had a talk with Sammy himself, but I took my suv because I had ac issues. They checked it & came with a diagnosis. Had them fix it only to have the same issues again. They checked the suv again & paid to have them fix it for the second time. Long story short, the ac it's the same as when I brought it in. Sam will tell you the truth no matter what. I find that he is priced fairly. He will not recommend a service not needed. He will let you know status of other parts or repairs that may need to be addressed in a certain time period, while going through his routine inspection.
