Conveniently located on the corner of Morro Bay Blvd, Sammy J's is a newer Irish pub. Not like the old school cop bars in NYC but a decent place to stop and grab a drink. Service was great. Unfortunately the beer I wanted needed a new keg and since the new keg was not chilled it needed time to get cold... They do pour a good stout though.

We had an opportunity to check out Sammy J's on a trip to Morro Bay. My husband was born and raised in Boston so the signed, framed Larry Bird jersey caught our eye and drew us in. The first time we visited (on the same trip to Morro Bay) Trent was our bartender. He was very personable and kept the drinks and food flowing. On our second visit we had an opportunity to be served by Cesar who was equally personable. The owner and cook, John, came out from the kitchen and spoke with us, and with the other customers. We found out that the bar is named after his Grandfather and that Larry Bird is his favorite NBA player . I have to say the entire staff was a well-oiled machine and worked so well together, creating a positive vibe for their patrons and for each other; and the food is delicious! There are several items that we want to try on our next visit. Give Sammy J's a try next time you're in Morro Bay. We will definitely be back

Great Irish Pub serving the staples. The food is cooked fresh, the drinks are great and it's all ages which is awesome to have kids enjoying the tables and adults at the bar.

Thrilled to have an Irish pub in town! The Shepherd's Pie was absolutely delicious--comforting, flavorful, and truly hit the spot. The bartender was fantastic--friendly, attentive, and made the experience even better. I also had a great chat with one of the owners and really hope the pub becomes a long-lasting part of the community. If I could make one suggestion: lean even more into the Irish theme! I'd love to hear traditional Irish music playing--it would add such a rich, authentic vibe. The modern music was enjoyable, but part of what draws people to an Irish pub is that distinct cultural charm. Maybe even consider promoting some specialty Irish cocktails. And while the space is cozy, maybe there's room for the occasional live Irish music set or even a bit of dancing? That would be amazing. Thank you for opening up this wonderful venue!

Wow. Hello Pub life in Morro Bay. Irish Love, served with a side of Beach vibe. Staff couldn't have been more welcoming. Pub grub is outstanding!! Don't miss the Bangers and Mash with veg or the Cheese curds. Get your chilled glass and my favorite Irish beer Smithwicks. Guinness on tap along with beers, wines and wine based spirits. This place is outstanding. Come in and see them soon

Four of us just had an amazing lunch here today and everything and I mean everything was absolutely delicious! We had the Irish burger with massive amounts of bacon, the creamy broccoli, bacon, potato cheesy soup and an epic shepherds pie! The home made rolls with the soup and shepherds pie were so light and tasty! Oh and a nice chilled black and tan with decorated foam. They even have a way for you to customize the image on your drink! The staff and owners were friendly and inviting and you could tell that they love running this restaurant. I know we will be coming back again and again!

Wow! My husband and I frequent Morro Bay and this is hands down one of our new favorite spots! We walked in on Saturday night with some friends and the place was busy, friendly, and smelled great! They are a new place and still gaining momentum, but I'd definitely have to say that they are a fantastic addition to Morro Bay! The food was awesome! If you are a fan of Shepherds Pie, I was highly recommend ordering it. We saw on their social media that they do other Irish dishes as daily specials and we were bummed we missed the Guinness Beef Stew one of the regulars was telling us about. We can't wait for our next trip back because this will be our first stop.

Went on Sunday and this is the first Irish pub that didn't have Guinness on tap? Only cans as the keg was out.

The funny statues at the front give the place a unique atmosphere, and the architecture/interior of the building has a classic Cheers-like feeling to it. It's spacious and roomy on the inside with nice furnishings and it has a beautiful wooden bar area if you appreciate those things. There's also a patio with tables out front which is perfect if you have dogs. The service was super great and friendly, and also everyone we met was really friendly. It's definitely a locals hangout, everyone there was a local. While we were there we ended up talking to several people and they were all really nice. My friend and I were both clearly out of towners and both the bartender and the local people were super cool, so we definitely had a difference experience from the last two reviewers. I will say though, they do close on the somewhat earlier side, I think they closed around 12-12:30 on a Thursday when we were there so don't expect to be staying there till 2am. If you're stopping through town, honestly I think this place is a hidden gem that's worth putting on your list of places to visit.

As soon as we walked in the vibe was weird- it reminded me of the movie Get Out. There were zero women in the place- just the male bartender and 3 male patrons. No music playing, no conversation. Just silent. We were 3 women walking into this creepy male dominated bar but didn't care because we were just there to have fun. In hindsight we should have walked right back out. My girlfriend and her cousin had to use the restroom so I sat down at the bar to wait for them and order us drinks. Right away the bartender approached me and in a very unwelcoming tone told me "just so you know I've already called last call". I checked the time, it was 12:30. We had had a late dinner the next town over and had just gotten back and were looking forward to a nightcap in this town we love to visit so much. Now, we all know that bars close at 2, (it even says that on their hours when you Google it) so I was confused. I looked at the clock, looked back at the bartender, and said "it's not even 1 yet. Are you not open until 2?" To which he VERY rudely and condescendingly replied, "what, did you see that online somewhere one time?" and was visibly annoyed that I dare even ask a harmless question. At this point I had felt completely unwelcome and was basically in fight or flight mode because I could tell he just wanted a problem. Ok, you got it. I asked him what his problem was and he stammered over his words like he was surprised I could even hold my own. His goofy ass buddy playing pool stepped in as his backup at this point reiterating that last call had in fact already been called. I said "ok, that's fine, but he didn't need to be so rude about it". To which the dork playing pool replied "he wasn't being rude at all actually", like ok, are you hoping to go home with him or something? I said "you must have not heard the way he was speaking to me then" at which point this man towering over me started raising his voice and YELLING at me "I'm standing right here I heard the whole thing!" at this point I was honestly ready for whatever was coming next but by then my girlfriend and her cousin were coming out of the bathroom completely unaware of what was happening so I just called them all assholes and told my girlfriend "we're leaving, these guys are f***ing weird" and we left. The 5'4" male bartender followed us out and stood on the sidewalk as we walked to our car, I guess he was trying to look tough but our group of 3 women were all taller than him. I said loudly that he clearly has little man syndrome as we left and that was it. I have no idea what his problem was. We are very friendly and respectful people and were there to have a drink or two and a few laughs before going back to our hotel for the night and instead I was met with *attempted* intimidation by *mostly* fully grown men. I guess they wanted the place all to themselves for their little circle jerk sausage party. Won't be back. Ever. I've been a server and bartender for over 15 years and could never imagine treating anyone this way. It was truly disgusting for absolutely NO reason at all, and based on all the other reviews complaining about what is clearly the same guy, it astonishes me that this is the type of person they want representing their business. Horrible service and environment. Legends owner, I'm talking to you. Shameful.

On a quick day trip on a Friday afternoon, we decided to give this place a try. No reservation and were promptly greeted and seated. Although we did not have a full bay view, we had a partial bay view. Some hits and misses with food and service. 1. Bowl of Clam Chowder (no bread bowls available). Chowder was piping hot and had nice pieces of clams (dad got a bit of clam shell..so be careful), celery and potatoes. The chowder was very creamy and not grainy or watery like other locations. I would definitely order again 5/5 2. Fish & Chips: Fresh Pacific cod, lightly breaded, served with house-made tartar sauce. Fish was fried to perfection. 5/5 3. Seafood Pasta: Linguini with jumbo prawns, fresh catch, Cajun cream sauce, garlic bread. Everything tasted fresh and seasoned perfectly 5/5 4. Side of Garlic bread: extremely disappointing. We ordered garlic bread with our chowder, it never came. Waitress decided to serve it with the mains (fish and chips) and we ordered for the entire table and she only brought 2 pieces. 5. Insalata Molina: Mixed greens, arugula, pear, walnuts, crumbled blue cheese, mango vinaigrette. Couldn't tell you if this was any good bc the waitress NEVER brought but charged us for it. She then takes it off the bill and brings me the salad in a Styrofoam container. I told her I didn't want it and put it in my bag. Salad was so soggy (which means the kitchen prepared it and the waitress forgot to serve it) I would not order and do not recommend ordering it bc it was the size of a side salad definitely not worth the price point. 6. Mocktail Lavender lemonade: definitely not balanced, was pretty tart and again the price point was off. It was about 8oz lemonade for $12 They do offer a nice selection of wines. Restrooms are located outside the restaurant and are public restrooms, pretty dirty and out of stock. Although our service was a big miss, I do recommend the food items we ordered. I did take a star off due to the service.

Unfortunately, each visit has felt a little less impressive than the one before it, and this most recent experience was disappointing enough that I probably would not return. Parking is usually easy, and I have never had to walk more than a couple of minutes. There are also a couple of EV spaces nearby. When my girlfriend and I walked inside, the restaurant felt unusually warm, humid, and stuffy. It was uncomfortable enough that we briefly considered leaving. We chose outdoor seating instead, but that comes with its own drawbacks. The tables are exposed to the afternoon sun, pedestrians walk just feet away, vehicles pass close by, and the working dock is nearby, so you hear forklifts, unloading equipment, and active fishing operations throughout the meal. We started with the Oysters Rockefeller, which I have ordered on all three visits. They were good and are honestly one of the main reasons I have continued returning. They are not easy to find where I live, and this version is enjoyable, even if it is not on the level of what I have had in places like New Orleans. My girlfriend ordered the clam chowder with bacon. We have been comparing clam chowders around the Central Coast, and unfortunately this one ranked last among the several we have tried so far. She described it as average and nothing memorable. I ordered the steamer clams, and this was easily the biggest disappointment. The very first clam I ate had noticeable grit in it, and unfortunately that continued through most of the bowl. I would estimate that the majority of the clams had some amount of sand or grit, which made them unpleasant to eat. I also found one clam that remained completely closed after cooking. I left it untouched. At a restaurant specializing in seafood, I expected more careful preparation and inspection. The broth was also surprisingly bland. I ended up adding hot sauce just to give it more flavor. As I worked through the broth, I also noticed three small hairs. I cannot say where they came from, but finding multiple hairs in the same dish was understandably concerning and further reduced my appetite. The service did not help. Our server took our order, delivered drinks and food, and eventually brought the check, but there was very little interaction between those points. No one checked whether we needed anything or asked how the food was going. That was especially frustrating because if someone had checked in, I would have had an opportunity to mention the problems with the clams while I was eating them. Overall, the Oysters Rockefeller were still good, but almost everything else about this visit was disappointing: the uncomfortable indoor environment, noisy outdoor seating, average chowder, gritty clams, bland broth, cleanliness concerns, and minimal service. I have enjoyed this restaurant more in the past, but after this experience, I think there are other places around Morro Bay where I would rather spend my money.
