Omg!! This is the most authentic korean restaurant in town!! I've been to a couple of other placesin newport news; they are decent but overpriced when it comes to quality. This place is bomb diggity. I had the rice cake appetizer; bomb! Great prices, great flavor. For my two mains (bc I was a fatty) I had a raw fish "salad"...super good. Great balance in flavor. Then I had a ribbon fish stew and omg it was soooooo good. You can tell the the fish was fresh too. The side dishes were very country style authentic korean. I loved it!!! Sami's was pretty good. We had the chicken wings which they do in a "lollipop" style. Their sauce had a lot of flavor, not overcooked. The fried Mandu also had a lot of flavor & fried just right. Not too raw or overdone. Their dipping sauce was good too. A blend of soy, sesame, onion & garlic. We both had the Bool Go Gi lunch box. Everything had good flavors & the portions were enough. The only thing that could have been a little better was the Bool Go Gi beef itself. It needed more flavor & to be more tender. There is more on their menu we want to try, so we'll be back. read more

I'm not from the area, so I was a little skeptical about going to a Korean restaurant since we have so many great places in northern va. The servers were attentive, but we were the only customers, so it didn't really count haha. I think this place is only good for drinking. I definitely wouldn't come back for the food. I had the dumpling soup and it was mediocre at best. The side dishes that came out were very simple and bland. I tried the spicy stir fried squid, which wasn't too bad. We drank a couple pitchers of beer and called it a night. The only thing that was remotely interesting was the karaoke machine up front. Koreans love drunken karaoke haha. read more

Im korean american, heard about sammys while at Langley afb. Definitely has old world tastes so it hit the spot but i cant believe i paid $13 for kimchi jjigae. Im from jersey and ive never paid over $8 for some kimchi jjigae. Its a seedy little bar with terrible interior decor but its character is made by the old korean men youll see meeting up and sharing a few drinks~reminds me of restaurants by the bases in korea :T read more

I used to go to eat at Sami's awhile back and new owner took over and I went to try. I was not happy with the new owner's food. I stopped going back because the food was poor. I then gave them another a chance. I had a family member just move here and I took a chance to go to Sami's again. I was embarrassed. I ordered dumplings, sweet and sour pork and Tofu Soup as well as Pork BBQ for two people. Mandu was okay and Sweet and Sour Pork was really bad. I taste the old oil and they were suppose to be crispy but were mush. Tofu soap we ordered mild and it was super spicy and not enough seafood inside. Pork BBQ was tiny and like mush. The taste was okay. The side dish was not that good as well. I said to the waitress the food doesn't taste right. She said american people love it. It is a shame because american people can't even tell the difference. They shouldn't be serving this. I am Korean and I am embarrassed that they are serving this kind of Korean food. I spent a hundred dollars. With that price I could have fed 10 people. Sami Restaurant cook needs to go back to Korea to learn how to cook and upgrade. Overall a bad experience and Bad Food. We had dinner with some friends here. It is not much to see from the outside or inside. It is a local bar & grill with tables. The bulgogi is excellent. It is grilled on a barbecue. There is a menu in Korean on the wall and about half of the 20-25 customers were Korean. The menu has about 15 entrees, all inexpensive. read more

I went for lunch with my coworkers. The place wasn't super fancy but we were instantly greeted and seated. Our food came quickly and was hot. I had the lunch box off of the lunch menu. !!! I went on a 13 month long culinary adventure in the ROK exploring everything Korea had to offer in the way of food and entertainment. Please, let me tell you, this place is the closest approximation to legitimate, authentic Korean food you are likely to find stateside. Although I am happy to leave my shoes on when I walk in and sit in a chair (most places in Korea you remove your shoes and kneel at a short table) I would like to see the in-table grill. The food itself was ON-POINT!!! The flavors were all spot on! As authentic as it gets, folks! And if she offers the "Korean Hot Wings" don't question it...JUST DO IT! You'll be glad you did. You'll forget B-Dubs or Hooters ever existed! There were no Juicy's, nobody came up to me screaming "Flowah?!" in my face, nobody followed me in saying "Hey, wanna go?" and no electronic bug zapping tennis racquet required, so all-in-all I'd say that the dining experience here is far and away...WAY better than most that I had IN KOREA! 12 thumbs up! !! !!! Great spot for Korean food. I normally go for lunch. The Chicken Bulgogi lunch special comes with white rice, kimchi, yaki mandu, broccoli and gimbap all under 10 bucks. They have a full bar and also a stage which I believe is for karaoke in the evenings. The one star deduction was because I came in outside of lunch hours and ordered Bi Bim Bop and it had very little meat. There was a lot of everything else but a few tablespoons of cooked ground beef. So this is the first time I've been here and we got some pretty poor service. A couple came in after us (who were Korean) and got water and food before us. We had to ask for water and side dishes. Also waitress was kind of rude. She barely came to our table to check on us and when we asked for things she kept walking as we were trying to talk to her and ask for more water or the bill. Poor customer service from the server. I ordered some beef bulgogi to go. As I sat and waited for my food, I saw the lady walk into the kitchen and come back out with food that was packed to go. She left it on the counter then walked back in the kitchen. I had no idea if the food was mine or someone else's who happened to place a pick up order. So I sat there until the lady came back out of the kitchen. I had to ask her if the food on the counter was mine? She said yes, so I took it and left. I thought it was pretty rude how she didn't think to let me know that the food was mine and just left it on the counter. The beef bulgogi wasn't even that great. I will not be going back here again. I'll be sure to find a Korean restaurant with better food and customer service. read more
