    Kente's Harambe!!!
    Angela T.

I cannot believe I never finished my review for Kente's! This is a family owned spot in Hampton, Virginia that I have visited since the 2000s. I have recommended it to others and had it recommended to me. My first favorite here was the Harambe - shrimp with spinach and rice. After all this time, I still love their vegetable rice and though I can make my own, have not quite figured out their secret ingredient :) I like their green beans too, Nevae stringy, delicately seasoned. A lot of people who know about Kente's recommend the fried broccoli. I am a lot of people :D I usually get harambe or salmon, and I've had the fried wingettes on occasion. They also serve desserts, slices of cake from whole cakes that are on display. Kente's has remained consistent over the years, and I love that for them, and for us, the community. Support Local! Support Black business!

I had the oxtails and pasta pasta. As always, very delicious. The atmosphere is quiet and the establishment is always clean. The prices are very reasonable compared to alot of other establishments.

The shrimp were okay, the rice was pretty good, although it actually looked better than it tasted. It still wasn't bad. The fish had a lot of bones in it... but honestly, the meal was "acceptable." The customer service is usually where this place really struggles and I can see big improvement. It wasn't Chick-fil-A service lol... but it wasn't the usual nasty attitudes I've seen in this place before. So that's nice... but the real reason I come here is for the FRIED BROCCOLI, it's really good and it somehow lures me back in here every couple of weeks ‍ Bite me

I ordered two of the kente specials (one fish, the other salmon) as well as the harambee special (sautéed shrimp w/ Zambia spinach over rice) they all came w/ green beans & a roll. While I was disappointed in the portions (could've been a lot more for the price), I am full. I'm used to well seasoned, OK heavily seasoned (not salty) food so while I was initially upset, I remembered to be open minded about it. It was DELICIOUS. While the portions weren't as big as I would have expected for the price, I am full, as this is probably the proper portions anyway (laughs). While the rice wasn't really seasoned, the sautéed shrimp & freshness of the spinach balanced out everything. From what I tasted, The fish and salmon dishes were amazing (they weren't mine so I kind of sneaked a bite of them both). I gave it 4 STARS because of the PRICES (those 3 dishes were $27.?? combined, which I've gotten more for that amount and the APPEARANCE of the inside was too Let me elaborate on the appearance. When I entered the restaurant, I felt a sense of being (I being African American). But it was so much decor packed in such a small space I felt cramped being in there. I wouldn't feel comfortable eating in there because it just looks so cluttered. If they toned it down with the decorations and brought some light in there, I would bring the entire family to eat. It wasn't until after I finished eating that I remembered to snap a picture of the dish LOL

Zimbia spinach and rice and beans, simply amazing!
    Alesha ..

I really don't know how i never been to this place or even heard about it until today. I also don't see how you could rate this business with anything less then 5 stars. I was a bit skeptical by the location of the restaurant but once inside you feel like your in your own house. It feels so welcoming and alive. Once you enter the lady in the front greets you as if you been there for years. With it being my first time there, she was very patient with me and allowed me to just breathe and look at the menu. I ordered some rice and beans and zimbia spinach. My only disappointment was i wanted to try the zucchini bread and unfortunately they didn't have any at that time. Which was fine because i will definitely be going back there again. The rice and beans were phenomenal!!! I never had rice and beans with spinach and carrots in it. It really blew my mind how good it was. Also the zimbia spinach was delicious. I thought it would be like regular spinach but boy was i wrong. It had a different but yet amazing taste to them. Normally spinach is overcooked and you would have to add salt but not this type. It still had a crisp taste and nice crunch and flavor to them. All and all this place needs to get recognized more, because their food is WONDERFUL, the customer service is great, and the atmosphere will have you thinking you never left the house.

Great place to eat for a delicious him cooked meal. They only take cash to make sure you go to the ATM the food is also made to order so either call ahead unless you mind waiting 10-15 minutes for your food. The grilled salmon is excellent I'll post a picture. This is me & my fiancée new lunch spot when in in town.

Fried fish with vegetable rice and green beans. Also featuring a partially demolished small plate of chicken curry.

Whether it's with friends or just the two of us, we've never been disappointed. Let's see how this visit went. We were immediately seated once we walked inside. It wasn't completely packed for a Saturday afternoon but staff was really busy with customers. The vibe was one that made us comfortable for the most part. After a few minutes of looking over the menu, we were ready to order. My selection was the Tavern Monte Cristo which consisted of chargrilled chicken and ham as the protein with Gouda cheese and cider aioli fried in a tempura batter with tavern fries. The meal was served hot and ready and tasted great. And having the cranberry coulis as a dipping sauce really added some taste. My only gripe with the sandwich was the amount of protein. I'm not sure if I ate most of it when we dined in, but when I ate the rest for dinner, it was more breading than anything else. Still good but they could've included more. Nonetheless, I was full. Good stuff as always from Park Lane Tavern :)

This past weekend, I visited, and it happened to be Restaurant Week. My go-to meal is their crab cake sandwich and fries, but I ventured out and tried their special: New England Clam Chowder and Seafood Mac and Cheese. The chowder was okay. The clams were a little chewy and it lacked flavor; needed a few more dashes of salt at the least. The seafood Mac and Cheese had potential. The crab meat on top looked enticing. The noodles were cooked to perfection. But the flavor was also lacking. It was not cheesy enough to call a Mac and cheese and again needed more salt and/or other seasonings. There also wasn't much seafood to boast about. Maybe a scallop or 2, a very small quantity of shrimp....the crab meat and roll were the highlight. 3 STARS (for this visit). The service was GREAT! I hate to say it but I didn't like it. I ordered a cheesesteak and a chicken cheesesteak egg roll. My biggest complaint with both was the meat was chopped way too fine for me. It serves Philly-style cheesesteaks, samplers, egg rolls, exceptional customer service, and some of the Best Wings I have had in the area! The restaurant is relatively small and gloomy, with enough seating to hold about 20 people for dine-in; however, this place is not a dine-in but a takeout place. I like that they put their full menu online, unlike other places that only put limited items. Service is outstanding; my first time calling in an order, the server not only told me how long it would be. Also, on this occasion, after calling in my order and completing the call, the server realized there was something that they did not have at the time. So she took the time to call and let us know and offered us something else. It was honorable in my eyes that she did that. Lastly, when I arrived, she double-checked to ensure my order was correct before I left the store. I had a cheesesteak, and my wife had the same. They were served hot, cheese melted all the way, and tasted terrific; the only problem was they were light with the meat. This is a very unique menu. They have sampler platters that can feed an army or combo platters that can feed two, and the price is right. You can mix and match them or have the pre-selected item. Now, let me talk about these wings. AMAZING! Fried to perfection, seasoned with a wet or dry rub, plain or on the side. These are cooked to order, so if you get wings to go, they are still hot when you get home. These wings are excellent, and you get them whole or halved. The wings are a must-try; they are some of the best in the area! I recommend you call ahead, but if you don't, there is a seating area where you can wait. I will be back! Happy Yelping!

It's just a horrible experience as is. They need to go to Precarious and see how they do it. Their food is generally good to great. They have a $5 before 5 app and drink special menu that is a really good deal. Nice spot for adults to have some drinks. Just be patient as service is generally slow. Now onto my recent experience.... I suggested it to some friends who wanted to grab some beers on MLK day which was a Monday. There were 4 of us guys and 7 kids. It's a lot. I get it. They weren't overly busy. Maybe a quarter full. I tried to keep the kids away from other tables by giving them boundaries. They were not happy with us. They didn't like the kids being outside in their patio (freezing, no one out there) etc. The one server was getting destroyed. She had just like 6 tables, but a 16 top. I felt badly for her. Our drinks correspondingly took about 20-30 minutes each time we tried to order. She was nice when she could get to us. At one point a person who said they were a manager, I think she said her name was Hannah, came over and said the kids couldn't be going around (again, I had boundaries not by any other patrons etc. from what I could see they were honoring them, but who knows), anyway she asked if we could keep them by us, which is fine. I then asked her if I could put in a beer and app order as I had been waiting for our server with an empty beer for at least 20 minutes. Instead of taking the order and ringing it in, she said she'd send the server over and disappeared never to be seen again. 5 minutes Iater the server was able to get free from her big table and get our beer orders and food in. Several items were forgot, but at this point we were kind of over it. Just not really your typical relaxed brewery vibe. Felt like they wanted it to be more of a sit down restaurant.
