I can't believe I haven't left a review for Same Same yet! It is by far one of my favorite places in Roscoe Village & probably in the entire city. Same Same is an intimate Thai restaurant. It has 3 seating areas- indoor, front sidewalk seating and a back beer garden. I've never had to wait too long for a table. They have a great cocktail list- my favorite is the Monkey Business! Same Same is one of my favorite Thai Restaurants in the city! I think that their dinner is always so great but I recently came for lunch and ordered their chicken dish and got basically the smallest portion imaginable. It was basically like 3 small pieces of hainese chicken! Definitely felt like a bit of a rip off. Their flavors are definitely very strong but so delicious! Came here for the backyard patio and it did not disappoint! It was very spaced out and the string lights added a great ambiance. I have been to Thailand and love authentic Thai food. The food here tastes like it was inspired by very authentic dishes modified for a western palate. Which I actually enjoyed very much at Same Same. I was a big fan of the Hat Yai fried shallots. I was sad that we waited to long for the sticky rice that it had cooled down and stiffened. The chicken and dipping sauce were delicious. Both the khao phat muu krob and the khao soi gai were delicious. The muu krob was a little bland but the pieces of pork belly were super tender! Adding the spicy paste helped a lot. The khao soi gai was a curry noodle dish. The noodles unfortunately were congealed making it hard to toss - but they were still delicious. The food/drinks I got were very good. Service was excellent. The prices may be a tad bit high, but the quality of the food I ate made the price worth paying. I find a lot of Thai restaurants serve noodles with way too much oil and/or "gravy" on their noodles. They will also often over-cook the noodles. Same Same did not do that. Same Same may have been a tad bit heavy with the sauce/seasoning in their Pad Thai for my tastes, but I think that might just be my personal preference. Compared to other Thai places though, they did way better than most Thai restaurants in not using too much gravy, or paste, on the noodle, so I really appreciated that. read more

Same Same took a funky spin to classic Thai food and it was delicious! We ordered the "Phat Kee Mao" also known as Drunken Noodles or Pad Kee Mao. The baby corn and bamboo shoots were a unique touch to the classic dish. Although this is listed as a "spicy" dish, I didn't taste the heat at all. I split the dish with my boyfriend's 14 year old sister and she couldn't eat it because it was "too spicy" so your choice on how to heed this warning. The next dish we ordered was the "Phat Kaphrao". They must have used a heaping amount of fish sauce because WOW WAS THIS FISHY. If you are not used to Asian cooking and fish sauce, I'd stay away. Don't get me wrong, the dish was good, but I think the smell itself might be too pungent for some. Good place for Thai food! This place is small and cozy and the food is pretty solid. They have hat yai Thai fried chicken which is great! It's nice to see that here since I don't see it served too commonly at other Thai restaurants. The spices on the chicken were really good and I also liked the fried onions it came with! We also got the phat Thai and panang curry. I really liked the phat Thai, it had a smoky lime flavor that was interesting and flavorful. The panang curry was good, but it was a pretty standard curry. The curry itself was a bit thinner than I liked, its consistently seemed closer to soup than curry. Overall a solid place for Thai food. I would definitely recommend coming here for the hat yai chicken since it was delicious and it's hard to find this elsewhere. Tasty, creative menu We had a Caviar discount code and hankering for Thai which led us to stumble upon Same Same. The menu was refreshingly different, while I like the standard choices, it was nice to see things we hadn't seen before (maybe we've seen them, but the menu is nicely curated so as not to overwhelm with choices). It took husband a while to decide which dish to choose because he wanted may of them. I went with the panang curry, I wanted to try the Phat Thai sans egg, but it wasn't an option and I couldn't customize beyond the preset options. I opted for shimp and extra spicy. I love that they have an option for extra spicy and Thai spicy; I like my spice, but extra is plenty for me. Husband is a Thai spicy type of person and frequently disappointed with what most places call spicy. The curry was really good, but my only complaint was it was too heavy on the baby corn and light on the shrimp. I'm defrosting some shrimp to steam and eat with my leftovers. My husband ordered the Gaeng Hung Lay, which is not a spicy dish, but very good according to him. We were walking through Roscoe Village and saw a sign for Same Same's beer garden--who could pass that up? We were glad we didn't! We had already eaten so we were only looking for drinks and Same Same's beer list did not disappoint. From Thai beers to locally brewed seasonals, like the ATB Oktoberfiesta, they had a nice selection to choose from. It was hard NOT to get food, first after seeing that there was a selection of presumably vegan options (tofu was a protein option and fish sauce was only listed on some but not others). Secondly, the smells coming from the kitchen were mouthwatering. Lastly, the prices for everything were very fair. Really super good. Service was awesome, the food was great, and the ambience on the patio is charming. The only error was that we ran out of water halfway through the meal which was not refilled before we left, and hey it's covid - the service industry is just getting back into the swing of things. We had Thai iced tea, which had the modern twist of using some kind of foam, number 13 (pork ribs) and the fried chicken combo. The Hat Yai Combo was my favorite - Two boneless white pieces and two bone in dark pieces of fried chicken. Since the dish was served with steamed sticky rice. We tore the chicken into small pieces, covered in sauce - and used the rice to eat. The Sii Krong Muu Yang was also a hit. The jaew sauce had a kick that made my lips tingle so good. The owner should consider installing Step'n'pull style doors to access the bathrooms and to go between the patio and indoor areas. Finally - our waitress was great. I was excited that a thai restaurant that was open for dine in. Being southeast Asian i was really excited for a good new place to go to besides sticky rice. I got seated at 8pm and ordered a couple minutes later. Unfortunately our food didn't come out at the same time and we still waited an hour for our food. I got the pat kee mao with steak, it was burnt and the steak was overcooked. I tried to keep eating, but once food is burnt. The burnt taste stays on it. My brother got a steak dish and it was the last dish to come out. We had to return it, because I was not edible. There was overly salty, sour, and bitter. Not the best quality, disappointing because literally everything else was great. My friend and I were eager to check this place out. Most Thai places I know of have a ton of options, so it was interesting to see a pared down menu. The service was a bit spotty at first, but when our waiter arrived after 5-10 minutes, he was very nice. The drinks were wonderful and reminded me a bit of tiki drinks (or at least mine did), and they were well balanced enough to not taste like straight liquor. Dinner started with Tom Yum soup. Your mileage may vary from mine; my friend enjoyed hers. I might have received a bad batch because it had zero taste! It was not spicy, and I was searching for some sort of flavor but came up short. It was disappointing. However, their pad see ew was incredible, especially in the flavor department. The veggies were crunchy but not raw, and the components came together very well. Been wanting to try this place out for a while. It's been bookmarked on my Yelp list, and is a decent mile walk from my place. With my parents visiting, I figured it would be a good time to try this place out on a weeknight. We walked down to this place and arrived at 8:23pm (knowing they close at 9pm). Given that there was literally only one other table of two people, and one gentleman at the bar, it was obviously not busy. The guy standing by the bar/computer area saw us and at first kind of greeted us (?) and told us the kitchen closes in five minutes and to sit where we'd like, but to decide what we wanted to eat quickly. At first, mind you, it wasn't super rude or anything, but the vibe was obviously a rushed feeling. We sat down, and within two minutes he came to our table and was basically like "what can I get for you? The kitchen closes at 8:30". All of this was said in kind of a rude tone, and he seemed annoyed that we were even there quite frankly. Since I also was ordering a fourth plate for someone else, I felt rushed to even order for them as I didn't even know what they wanted either. After he quickly took our orders, I noticed he went back to the computer and his overall body and facial expressions just gave us the impression that he was straight up annoyed. Like dude, relax. If it was that big of a deal, he could have honestly just told us that the kitchen was closed already, and we could have easily just walked elsewhere on the street (as there are a handful of other options on Roscoe). No one likes to feel rushed when they are eating/ordering, and I understand we arrived just over 35 minutes before closing, but that gives us plenty of time to order and be out of there around 9pm. I can understand if we arrived at like 8:45. Either way, he brought over napkins & utensils and it almost felt like he slid/threw it on our table. Let me just say, this man was moving really fast and seemed stressed out by his energy. With literally 3 other customers in the restaurant who were finishing up their drinks & food, I don't understand the sense of urgency to act the way he did. As far as the food, I was not that impressed. I ordered a Pad See Ew (asked for it spicy), and it came out not spicy at all. Tasted kind of bland if you ask me. It's definitely not the taste you get from a super authentic Thai place, but I can see why some people might like that dish who don't eat at more local hole in the wall Thai places. Other plates on our table: Panang curry and Viet wings. The Panang curry was just ok. There was something missing in the flavor in my opinion, but the others at my table though it was good. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt. The wings were ordered on a whim since we felt super rushed when ordering. They were actually good, but I wouldn't normally order those at a Thai restaurant. That was by mistake and I actually thought they were decent. Honestly, I might come back given that the decor and vibes inside are nice, but maybe for a cocktail. Went here last night with my husband. We are big Thai fans but find most Thai restaurants lack a fun ambiance. Same Same defied that stereotype and we had a wonderful evening. The owner Kris will guide you through the menu and we had great conversations about the awesome mural in the restaurant, his time in Southeast Asia, and the Chicago restaurant scene. We started with the dumplings which were hand rolled and delicious. Quality meat too! I ordered the Phat Kee Mao which had the best thick noodles and sauce. We took Kris' advice for the other dish of Khao Soi Neua and WOW! It was unique and saucy and delicious super tender chicken. Finished up with mango sticky rice for dessert which was fun - fruity pebbles on top was a cute touch. We loved it all. Yesterday evening, a friend and I, decided to try Same Same. The establishment is a small store-front-like space. However, it had very nostalgic vibes. There were maybe about 10 small tables and booth like seating . We sat the bar were we met Gabriel , the bartender! He made our experience worth sitting at the bar! He's pretty much tried all the items on the menu and shared his favorites with us. We shared the Phat Thai and ordered the viet style wings. Phat Thai- shrimp, egg, tofu,tamarind, radish, peanuts , lime and Chile. This dish was amazing ! It had such a balance of flavoring . I traditionally would never order pad Thai because I'm not too fancy for sweet dishes. However , this had the right amount of spicy to set off the sweetness . Topped with the squeeze of lime ! Highly recommended ! Viet Style Wing were great! They had the right amount of crisp and flavor ! Again both spicy and sweet. And huge ! We both had drinks . I had two local beers Marz Jungle Boogie which was very floral and strong . But the taste was one of a kind ! The other was twisted hippo which I absolutely loved !
