Soggy fries and tiny, dry, burnt chicken fingers. If you're looking for tasteless soggy food, maybe Same Old Place is for you! Throughout high school and college I would stop in for pizza, etc. Today's SOP is just not what it used to be. I saw the cook pour chicken fingers out of the fryer onto the grill top. Why? Why are you purposefully making the food even dryer and burnt?!? To top it off I get home to find out that not only is my food pretty unappetizing, but also, no sauce. Not even ketchup in the bag. The fries were also pretty tough, hard, and dying for salt. Moral of the story: $12 for soggy food you won't enjoy. I normally only curse in the presence of friends, family and the elderly on the red line, but fuck, this place puts out great pie. A slice of cheese ($2.20) and a slice of pepperoni ($2.40 -- yeah, $.20 more) plus a Sam Adams draft ran me $8.08. They have pitcher specials that equate to $7 for 4 pints. That's $1.75 a glass, folks. Cheapest beer in town? Tell me if you know otherwise. There's one TV in the back dining room, shown and broadcast with appropriate volume, that suddenly transforms the eating space in to a functional living room; your family now townies, and your dinner served with a dismissive hand wave and a cash exchange. It's the best non-gourmet slice on Centre. I am saying this scientifically speaking as back in 2001 in Jackson Square we conducted a double blind pizza experiment with an array of college students, many from New York. Surprisingly, I had to push to get the Same Old Place pizza even in the contest! The studied pizza was plain cheese bought from regular shops, no chains, no gourmet and included the 8 (non-gourmet) pizza shops on Centre that are all along a 15 minute walking distance!!! 2001 Double Blind Pizza Experiement Company Participants: Cappy'sCappy2Nemo'sRizzo'sIdealCafePizzaPlanetPizzaSameOldPlaceHouseofPizza Participants were payed in pizza and soda and informed of the benefits for the Jamaica Plain community in finding that better slice. Participants were as well informed of the potential side effects of participating including; mild indigestion, fluctuating laughter and mild regret. Pizza was judged in cheese malleability, crust texture, sauce quality, greasiness and overall goodness. People tried quarter slices on numbered paper places, made their notes and casted their votes. We only had about 40% of participants actually vote with about a 2% margin of error. My hypothesis that Frank Chiampas' SOP on Centre was the best slice in overall goodness and highest ratings in most categories was supported. Rizzo's placed for the greasiest pie, as was also predicted though a close majority predicted Captain Nemo's would place highest in the greasiest category. Same Old Place is a neighborhood pizza joint. Nothing fancy going on here at all but a bunch of guys making subs, pizza and fries..... The pizza is fine, not the best I've had by any means. I bring all my "little people" friends here and their buddies for a special pizza and play in the park day out and they love it! Also, Mario, one of the pizza guys sometimes gives the little kids pieces of dough to play with when he's not too busy, so sweet and it doesn't hurt that he's funny and handsome too:-) The guys behind the counter are all characters and have their flirt radar full on! Reminds me of Europe in that respect...even the little old ladies get the "you lookin hot today sweetie" treatment and I love this, makes for a good old laugh while standing in the queue. They make great sandwiches and subs but the real reason I come here is for the french fries...in Dublin we call fries "chips" and these babies are the closest thing to Dublin chips from a chippie(a van parked outside a pub with a mini fast food service inside) so when I'm feeling a little lonely, I always come here and they put chips in my order even if I don't actually order them.....hhahah! I've been coming here for years and I don't expect gourmet pizza or fancy food, just the regular stuff and they never let me down. read more

I'm not sure I understand the hype at this place. I've only ordered from here once but I was a little disappointed especially with all the good reviews I've heard. I ordered pizza and french fries on a Friday night around 8PM, so mind you, they were very busy. The woman who took my delivery order was rude and short with me and couldn't rush me off the phone fast enough. There was an hour wait for delivery, which, for a Friday isn't that bad I guess. When the food got to me it was cold. That's not so much an issue with the pizza but the french fries were a little soggy. They also forgot about my small drink, which came with my order. I'd give this place another chance but I think next time I'll skip delivery and go to them. read more

Counter Guy: "You need to clean." Pizza Guy: "I got 4 pieces of pepperoni to make here, you want me to clean and no make the pizza?" That kind of attitude made my night. I found this (same ol') place because it was after ten and the smaller joints (Zesto's, Ideal) were closed. It's pretty traditional pizza joint fare, and I like that a third of their menu is hand scrawled on tiny whiteboards and little pieces of paper taped to the wall. I payed a little less than five for a slice of cheese and a slice of 'roni. The pizza was greasy, yea, but there's certain things you accept when you go looking for pizza by the slice. It tasted good enough for my unrefined pizza palette, and I got a convenient cardboard box. There's lots of seating if you come in a big group, and more impressively, they serve breakfast. $3.50 for 2 eggs, home fries, toast and coffee? I had high expectations for SOP as a cool local joint that I might just become a regular at. Well... Same Old Place is more like just "Another Old Place". I was not impressed with their pizza and the service drags them down a star. I can appreciate their old school style, but old school does not equal rude. The pizza is simply not good enough for me to go back, considering the service. It's standard, at best. I don't know what all the hub-bub is from these Yelpers saying it's the best pizza place in Boston, they're friendly, etc. My experiences have not been the same. Is it me? You'll see in my reviews, I very rarely have much to say about service or attitude - I'm easy going. One cool, damp spring evening, we ordered ahead, and the pizza wasn't ready when we got there to pick it up (gave them more than the 15 minutes they asked for) - no biggie, we waited a few minutes, got our pie and got out of there. We got home with the goods and noticed it was plain. We ordered 'roni. Whatevs, we ate it anyways. It's still pizza. I looked at the receipt, and they still charged us 'roni. We weren't about to go back down to the mom and pop's pizza place and ask for a $5 refund. It was rainy and we were tired and it just wasn't worth the time. Bummer. Second time, on a sunny summer afternoon, my fiance was craving pizza, so we stopped to eat in, wanting to give it another go. It took longer than it should have to get our order in. We were the only people in line at the moment and yet we felt rushed and as though we were a bother. These employees do not seem to be very engaged. They avoid making eye contact the whole time you're standing there. And when you finally force your order upon them, they still seem to be staring past you as though they really don't give a crap. I give people the whole "bad day" thing, but twice, two separate days, two separate ways, these guys simply didn't cut it for me. Considering the far friendlier service, with equal quality food elsewhere in the city, there's no compelling reason for me to return here. I'd rather order from Primo's. It isn't as large or cool a place to sit in and eat and they don't serve beer, but at least I feel welcome. Won't be going back if I have a choice. read more

The rating is for the service, I've been coming to the same old place since I was a kid in the 70's I've been gone a few years and back now, I guess these guys are new owners I've been going back for the past 8 months and they keep forgetting my order, first couple times I give em the benefit of the doubt, so now it's predictable, the counter guy seems nice enough but gets flustered easily, the young guy ( maybe Spanish) is just straight up RUDE The cook pretty much keeps to himself and the pizza maker is oblivious to his surrounding, today again when my pizza should have been ready it wasn't and said I'll make it for you real fast! This place is close to my abode, and one night, i was desperate for pizza and ordered one. I was very disappointed. I mean, how can you mess up a pepperoni pizza? The answer? very easily... The crust was very oily from the cheese and the pepperoni made the pizza oh-so salty, but not in a good way. OK..enough about the bad stuff. This is my new favorite pizza place! Now that we've moved across town and can't have Armando's, we've rediscovered SOP. The pizza is big, flat, and cheesy- NY style, not Greek, like you're most likely to find in Boston. I've tried the sandwiches and they're solid. The people are really nice and they always overestimate the delivery time. They are one of those delivery places where the guys call you once they're downstairs, so keep your phone nearby! They won't ring the doorbell first. The website is kind of hilarious. It looks like it was designed in 1996. It was lunchtime and I was hungry.....so I went to Yelp. I checked the reviews and selected Same Old Place for some cheap eats. And it was good (and quick!). I lucked out with a parking spot right in front, walked in, got my slice and my coke and proceeded to enjoy a delightful lunch in this unpretentious pizza joint across from JP Licks in Jamaica Plain. The reviews promised me good, cheap and delicious pie and that's exactly what I got. What more can you want? Happy people work here and they make a solid pie...steak tips are delicious and tender, too! My mom has been getting her pizza from this location since the late 50s..had a different name but there is something really cool about The Same Old Place actually being just that. JP has changed SO much over the decades and our family is very happy we can continue to go here. My grandparents don't understand why new pizza places "overthink" pizza (grandfather said this)...just ale a good classic pizza...tasty crust with a little crisp and a little chew- a little grease (greaseless pizza ...what is that. I've tried both Same Old Place and Ideal Pizza, and this place wins. The woman on the phone was super nice and the food arrived promptly. I've only ordered once, but I have a feeling I'll be calling them again on Sunday during the Pats game. The pizza is cheesy and the crust has a great chew. I ordered a pizza with garlic and basil because that most closely resembles the margherita pizza I ordered so often at Regina's when I lived in the North End. The pizza was delicious. I had 4 pieces (yes half of a large pizza) and then stole my husband's last piece! I was only a little disgusted with myself and mostly happy. The only recommendation I'd give people is to not order too many toppings. They put a lot of cheese on the pie (a good thing) and I can see it getting soggy or too floppy with a ton of toppings. Lastly, I am not sure, but it looks like the mushrooms are canned from 2 of the photos on Yelp. I love mushrooms but hate those chewy canned ones that some pizza places rely on, and that may not be the case here, but I can usually spot them. read more

A plain slice from Same Old Place, fresh out the oven, nourishes the soul . Thin dough stretches neatly into a crust that can only be called as admirably puffy and soft. But the real stars of the show are the sauce and cheese and--yes, goddammit!--GREASE which all work together in perfect harmony to satisfy a starving student or a lazy proletarian or a just-dumped sad sack (it's okay, sister; you're too good for him anyway!) Aside from praise for the pizza, I don't have a lot to say about Same Old Place. The atmosphere is nothing special and the damn TVs are usually tuned to something annoying. None of the other food seems very good at all. I had an omelette there once and I swear that the preparer tossed in an extra stick of butter just to see if he could stop my heart right on the spot. I really like Same Old Place's pizza. It's the closest I've found to New York style so far in Boston, and it's conveniently located near my job. I really like the thinner crust and the cheese is really fresh and delicious. The slices are pretty big too (especially for the price); you can get decently full off of a single slice, sometimes two can be too much for me. If you're only going for a slice or two, be sure to bring cash, as their card minimum is $10.00 I believe. Definitely worth trying a slice! read more

I've found Same Old Place to have the best "cheap" pizza in JP, which I suppose is something of a backhanded compliment, but I really don't mean it that way. They've got great prices (see beer, pitcher of) and even though it's probably something very generic, I really *really* like the hot sauce they use. On a completely different note, it also really says something about the establishment the way the community reacted to the shooting that happened around Thanksgiving 2010. I was struck by how the owner and staff refused to take time off in the aftermath, and how everyone really rallied behind the establishment. read more

I have a friend who lives in West Roxbury and I swear the only reason he comes over to my house is for pizza and fries from Same Old Place. If you're ordering a whole pizza, it's not the cheapest place in the neighborhood, but it's the best, which more than makes up for the price difference. If you're getting take out, slices are still reasonable for about $2 per. They're always busy, and delivery can take a while, so you may just want to go pick it up if you can. Same Old Place has my favorite pizza in Boston. It is the big, thin-crust, big-slice, floppy kind of pizza, as opposed to Greek-style or deep dish or gourmet pizza. This is a great place to pop in for a slice if you're around Centre St., and their delivery is fast and reliable. Our household's standard order is a large pizza with whatever toppings we are in the mood for, and a "crispy chicken Greek salad" with Greek dressing. I am seriously addicted to this salad! They pack the salad container so full that I have to open it carefully and dump it into a larger vessel before serving. It is enough for more than 2 people, or if there are just 2 of us eating, there's leftover salad (and pizza) for the next day. They make an awesome chicken cutlet sub too. The Pizza varies from decent to good. Not great but not bad either. It's the BREAKFAST that makes Same Old Place shine! If you can make it in by 10:45am, you can get two eggs, homefries, toast, and a coffee for about $4. The breakfast service is fast and the food is yummy. I joked with my wife that one can judge a breakfast place by looking at how many old guys are in the joint noshing on food in the morning. S.O.P. has that in spades. FIVE stars on the breakfast. The other items that I have had on the menu have been good too, such as a Steak & Cheese sub. The chicken finger dinner is larger than most similar food establishments. In response to some of the previous reviews -- yes the service can be a bit rude and the employees a bit short with you -- but, who cares? This is a sub/pizza place, not a fine dining establishment downtown. AND YES, the slices seem to be better than the whole pie for some reason - I agree. For straight up Pizza in JP, I prefer JP House of Pizza or Zestos. All in all -- 3 stars on the pizza, 4 stars on the other stuff, and 5 stars on the breakfast. read more

I miss Same Old Place! When I lived in JP and it got to be the end of a pay period, my roommate and I loved to go with a few bucks to get the special: 2 slices and a small soda. I don't drink a lot of soda but there is something to be said for the combo of soda and pizza. The simple pleasures of life! A solid neighborhood pizza place. No frills. No organic goat cheese and fancy schmance arugala with a balsamic drizzle. (not that that doesn't sound delicious). Same Old Place is what it is. I don't know what's going on lately, but the last few times I've been in there, the pizza has not been good. It's been exemplary. It's been wonderful. It's been awesome. I know NPR gave it Best New York Style Slice of Pizza in Boston a few years back. And it is. It truly truly is. In the past, the pizza has been inconsistent. But, again, the last few times I've been in, the crust has had the perfect crunchy not-too-hard, not-too-soft texture, the sauce to cheese ratio has been nailed, the sauce is fantastic, and the cheese -- I don't know what they're doing with the cheese (I think I tasted cheddar in there), but it's so goddamn flavorful. The service is good and quick and the slices always come out at the perfect temperature. Hot, just shy of burning your mouth. I don't get anything else there -- ocasionally a breakfast sandwich which is relatively standard fare. The atmosphere is decent for a dive. But I don't care about any of that. I go in for the pizza. It gets my coveted five stars because the pizza is really the Best New York Style Cheese Slice in Boston, hands down. The one caveat I have is the dough needs a little more salt. read more

4 stars might be pushing it a little. It is after all a local pizza joint in the pre-bertucci's/upper crust mold. You don't go here to get a slice with roasted eggplant, kalamata olives and capers. You go here for a slice of cheese and maybe a coke. I do think the slice holds its own - not too doughy, sauce is not bad, not too sweet. A good, balanced standard issue slice. Eh. I can't eat pizza, so I'll let others review that, but their sandwiches are only so-so. I've been served past-expiration-date honey mustard sauce multiple times (MONTHS past expiration, mind you). One time I got a spoiled bottle of OJ- clearly at some point it had not been refrigerated. Now, that may not be their fault, could have been the delivery truck, or whatever. However, when I brought it to their attention I had to explain that that meant I would like some other drink gratis, as this one was festering and fermented. They begrudgingly handed over a soda, but didn't check the rest of the OJ stock, so whoever ordered the next one was likely treated to the same vile experience as I had. When I've order the chicken finger dinner plate to go, it never has the salad. Last time, I specifically said "with coleslaw" and when I got out to the car it was just sodden unsalted fries and the chicken fingers. Oh, and never any catsup. HELLO? FRIES =CATSUP. Plus, the guys who work there are townie dudical dudes who kind of don't like women, especially dykes, very much. Which would be semi-expected in, say, the middle of rural Texas, but this place is in the heart of JP, so what gives? The service (to women) is bordering on churlish. read more

I haven't tried most of the menu at Same Old Place 'cause every time I go there I can't help but get the same thing - Massachusetts burger and steak fries. It's an obsession. I LOVE their burger dressing and the fries are the good ol' fashioned Irish chips I miss from home. I always add cheese and tomato to the burger. My only complaint is that they don't have a chicken burger on offer, as their beef patties aren't anything special and a breaded chicken version of the Massachusetts burger would be orgasmic. Maybe I'll try to get 'em to stick a chicken cutlet on my burger next time in place of the beef - we'll see how that goes! I hear their subs are good. I did try a slice of pizza once and it was only okay. Pretty greasy and the dough was a bit funky. The Real Deal pizza is definitely a lot better. It's a cool little hole in the wall with super friendly, fun staff and it delivers quickly which is awesome, but they have an insane delivery fee which sucks - for example, we just ordered food that, according to their menu prices, comes out to $11.90 yet somehow our total is $17.50. These guys are the reciprocal of Nemos. The pizza is great. It definitely has a homemade taste to it. They have great fries. And, I will continue to order from these guys because it's so good. However, constantly messed up orders and longer than projected delivery times can be problematic. Also, on a side note, plan o having your own drinks. They only have/deliver 20oz bottles of coke. No 2 ltrs. They do also make a good breakfast. If you go in, don't order a small soda. It will be the size of a mouth rinse cup. read more

Great gluten free pizza! I have been trying to find a local business that has (good) gluten free pizza. After trying this place I will never order pizza from another place as long as I am in Boston. I have celiac disease and it is very hard to find a high quality, gluten free pizza that tastes fresh. I ordered from here always understanding the risk of cross contamination and it didn't make me sick after. It was such a treat after either having bad pizza or one that made me feel sick. Same old Shhh It took them 6 or 7 tries to make a burger without bacon for my friend. Outrageous. They often get the order wrong and fail to correct the mistake. I have seen it with my own eyes! They know most customers don't have the time to wait longer and will have either have to pay again for delivery or suck it up. One day they have something the next they don't. AHEM! There is a rat infestation problem so I would beware of that. I like a good slice of pizza which is pretty good and decent size and a better deal than most, but I wouldn't bother getting much else if you're looking for flavor. The grilled chicken sub was pretty good too.
